well it’s Tuesday morning I’m Kate peton joined by David panota and this is the latest presented by CCM hockey I would call it a quiet Monday night with only three games but definitely not quiet for the New York Rangers a bloo there versus The Devils five to one they’re struggling they’ve lost six of their last seven games but yet they’re still in a wild card spot in the East Dave where do they go from here are they going to make some changes to their roster what can they do now the good news is they’ve got a couple days because they don’t play gain until Friday yeah yeah they got a little bit of time to breathe Kate a little bit but um the fans in Manhattan they’re they’re breathing a little bit heavier um they’re sighing a little bit deeper and they’re ticked off and the team you’re seeing frustration that’s now boiling into this room um and it’s translating on the ice even more so as you said six of their last seven they’ve dropped they don’t play till Friday now they’ve got the next four opponents are against non-playoff teams they’ve got an opportunity to kind of write the ship a little bit and get back on track and as you suggested or mentioned um they’re still in a playoff position this isn’t a team that is you know two and seven like this is a club where there’s still um you know they’re still on track to to do well this season they just need to get out of this funk the the problem is when you release information that becomes public that trickles into the room and now everybody knows trouba is available everybody knows kaco is available everybody knows Crider is available and so on so yes Drury is still continuing having trade conversations with other clubs um I do think and have gotten the sense in the last few days that kac’s name is a little bit more prominent uh right now as they try to bring in somebody that can slot into their top six and maybe kaco is the main piece that gets moved out he’s under contract he’s on Pace for 40 some odd points a bit of a rebound from last season but still not at the echelon that they anticipated the second overall pick in his draft class to be but he is available he’s the guy that we’re kind of keeping tabs on right now the other suggestion out there a coaching change I don’t really get that sense right now that Lavi is in any danger at the moment um but things do need to shift quickly for this club and they’re counting on at least one potential change uh to occur to kind of spark them in the right direction well we’ll keep tabs on that let’s move over to the Red Wings they have struggled to find consistency this season then we hear the news Patrick Kane on the IR with an upper body injury now that’s retroactive to November 23rd so he is eligible but it doesn’t sound like he’s ready to be back in the lineup what do you think is going on there there’s lots of trade speculation um is Derek leand in danger what’s going on yeah he’s in the final year his contract so the talk of a potential coaching change seems a lot more relevant and prevalent now in Detroit than it is on um or or in Manhattan excuse me with the Rangers so yes there’s speculation over Leone’s future um there and is it a situation where they move him out and they move up associate coach Bob bugner into an intern position or do they look outside the organization there was some chatter about Joel quinnville I’m not sure that’s the direction they go wood Craft’s name has been brought up as a potential uh option as well so they’re going to evaluate that but the plan hasn’t gone Stevie’s way uh on in Detroit so he is looking to make some uh some changes talking to other people around the league he is exploring a little bit the problem with them is they’ve got a lot of guys under contract so outside of really Jeff Petri and I guess Patrick Kane that are on expiring deals everybody else that they could potentially move or would need to move uh to free up some additional dollars they’re under contract so it’s going to take some creativity from Detroit’s side uh to make some impact type moves now the type of moves we’re hearing talking to people around the league is they would like to make something more of a hockey type trait so talent for talent type swap but they’re not moving cider they’re not moving Raymond they’re going to have to get creative it has not gone the way they anticipated um but I am curious to see how Detroit manifests its roster moving forward uh because it certainly sounds like they’d like to make some adjustments to it other end of the spectrum you’ve got the Leafs they’re sitting pretty on top of the Atlantic division they got Austin Matthews back and he hasn’t missed a beat they’re going to get a few more players back from injury it seems like they’re trending in the right direction so what do you think they’re looking at are they looking at adding some depth keeping their eye on the trade market and then is there anything internally that they need to be looking at right now at this point in the season when they’re thinking a couple months down the road yeah well firstly Kate with respect to the current roster and how it’s formed they are looking and and kind of poking around the center Market um now with Fraser Minon coming in the last few games he’s done really well he scored a goal Monday night he’s he’s fit really nicely and Craig marubi their head coach said after the game and it’s he’s a smart player a veteran player that’s just in a a young body so they they like what they see there and if he continues his pace of play that might eliminate any need to bring in a center in their bottom six they may have found that internally which shifts their focus to the second line I think a second line Center is what they would like to add to this group in a perfect world they don’t necessarily have the significant assets they’re willing to move to do it they don’t have a first round pick this year they have a first round pick next year will they look to potentially part with that we’ll have to wait and see I don’t think anything is imminent on that front but the 2C position is an area that I think Toronto will focus on trying to improve later on in the season the other thing and I mentioned this on and had discussed this with Nick alberga uh on on Leaf’s morning take earlier they have re-engaged and resumed contract discussions with Matthew NIS in his side of things or his side excuse me um they’d like long term it sounds like ni’s Camp is looking a little shorter not necessarily A two-year bridge but maybe three four years but again the Leafs want to go full stride so we’ll see where that goes if that develops um you know one of the things for Toronto right now he’s controllable they don’t have to rush into a deal I wouldn’t be surprised if this gets carried on to the off season but they’ve at least resumed talks in hopes of maybe seeing if they can get something done sooner than later all right we’ll keep tabs on all of that busier night in the league tonight 10 games on top and then we’ve got to talk a little bit about tomorrow because tomorrow afternoon and evening you know worst kept secret most of the rosters are out there but the official announcement of the four nations rosters will be tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow evening we’ve talked a little bit about Canada’s goal tending situation but uh we’re going to find out all of the above tomorrow and uh we’ll get you guys updated on our next edition of the latest presented by CCM hockey
