🕵️‍♂️ Transcript:

there were a power play got a couple goals and then um you know we I thought it was pretty solid game we worked we competed uh took too many penalties and uh you know the six on five like at the end of the game there a six on four we got to we got to come up with a better play there and um you know a little more urgency on that play in my opinion I I thought it was interesting that he said a little bit more urgency mhm but I mean he I’ve Loved CG Buu I’ve said a million times as much I’ve loved him on this show the start of this year how do you not pull the goalie with an offensive zone draw when there’s it’s a power play you have the offensive zone draw there’s just over two minutes left in the game you’re talking about urgency MH that’s not pulling the goalie there is the lack of urg like the opposite of it I couldn’t believe they didn’t pull the goalie right away yeah curious your thoughts on that too so they’re up a goal and they’re on the power play 24 I was thinking like his mind it’s like okay they can shoot for the empty net so they can just kind of fire win but if they want to win the draw then take him out they it was a full minute after that they didn’t take the draw no totally I I totally agree with you I was trying to put my my myself in his shoes and what what he might have been thinking but that did you know in an era where everyone’s pulling goalies earlier felt like the right time to make the pull I tell you I I believe I buy into the theory that if you’re down and you’re you’re fighting the clock like that I would pull the goalie at Center Ice I would pull him with the exception of maybe an offensive zone draw defensive Zone I am I do believe in it I do believe in it again we you can see stretches of five seven 10 minutes during any hockey game at any point teams aren’t even close to get a shot on goal right okay so I I’m okay with those percentages but I want an extra attacker on the ice even if we lose the draw like I I cannot wait for Puck possession and then have the guys regroup I want that extra guy on the ice then yep extra body to Puck to you know get in on a four check or a a 5050 Puck I got a better chance of out Manning even if I lose the draw yeah I have a better chance with that player on the ice there to to get in someone’s lane or to hurry someone up to turn a puck over to me I’m I’m not the weight the weight guy so um you know I talked about them being a team a team B to talk a little team a for a second um Mitch Marner just by far their best player right now you know you and I talk about that all the time but to me just not even particularly close um it’s interesting that they got Max Patcher ready as a Lin made you’re a big patches booster what did you think but listen do I feel like Max Patti much like Max DOI can go and and fill spots and maybe have a a good week do I Envision him holding that spot right to first round of the playoffs no absolutely not I don’t think I think those are short term Solutions but you didn’t like nowhere in my world do you invite a guy on a PTO at his age and then find out that he’s going to be your number one left Winger well did we do this with the Leafs the last time many years it it’s I I said this on Lee talk but I’m like God that gave me Thorton Vibes put him up there like oh maybe this works and th they put Thon they put Thorton with Matthews and Marner multiple times right and I was like oh my God I don’t agree with them doing it right now I don’t or I don’t disagree with it like there’s not an obvious other option right now yeah we’re not starting game one like this no I agree like it’s it’s a fine move but that’s what the vibe was that I got when I saw it happening totally yeah so so yeah he’s worked with Willie and JT right he can plug in there in spots but I I feel the same way as Matthews and Marner where you’re you’re going into the playoffs or you just you know you want a big win you’re gonna put Matthews and Marner together and you’re gonna put nce on on the left side that’s the line for me line it’s your best line why don’t we listen to barui on why Patra edti went with uh Matthews and Marner clip three a little aggressive at time but you know just hasn’t played in a while wants to be physical wants to do what he what he does and uh you know I we just went to the box too much in general five times you know that’s good players over there that was clip too but uh that was a cuz I mean that’s okay play the other one and then we’ll come out of it yeah I just felt like he was going to be a heavy player for him down low in the offense of his own and they ended up getting a goal out of it and uh you know I thought Max did a good job tonight with them guys thought you know kind of maybe died off later on in the game hasn’t played in a while I I like those reasons I don’t mind those reasons I just don’t see it as a a real strong long-term play that’s you kind of feel patet recognize that how he’s going to get opportunity on this team is by being physical and heavy and so you know maybe a little undisciplined yeah I mean he well he came in and he last sued somebody for uh uh was that the second consecutive penalty that he had yeah I mean that was a hero call not going to talk about the officiating over this weekend but people would like me to I won’t do it but I mean there’s a scrum in front of the net after they’re jamming away their goalie guy falls down pick him out give me a break like give me a break but you took two penalties back toback he can’t do it yeah go ahead it just that it is it’s funny watching someone it’s not his element it’s not the way he’s played over his whole career and so maybe he doesn’t quite have a sense for where that line is cuz that’s not his natural but inclination I know we’ve had long-term conversations but it’s kind of seeping a little bit here and that is that it’s always been a bit of a weakness that left side years now okay and the first week of our show you’ve been talking really in a perfect world you would have loved that if matth I could just hold his own there with Matthews and and Marner and then Bobby McMahon was going to be that guy that could come in take a Next Level maybe put up 25 goals and maybe 25 assists and come in 50ish right alongside a tarus maybe or Willie it’s it’s just not happening right now and outside of that then you’ve got a major drop off yeah if you uh Pro you know Pro rate Bobby McMahon’s stats he’d be he in an 82 Game season he’d have 24 goals and four assists that would be his season right now yeah so yeah not not exactly how you would have drawn it up can’t yeah it is disappointing though that this guy and I know it’s the thing we talk he can’t stay healthy because I think it’s kind of one of the underrated stories from last year’s playoffs that they couldn’t score didn’t have depth scoring and he was a guy who scores for them as a depth guy again he’s not in the lineup they’re struggling with depth scoring like not going to say they need Bobby McMahon but he is a different speaker the bottom of the line and when he’s in he’s fast and he can get to the net and he cuts in off his wing and you’re like okay I’m noticing him yeah he can pull the play in that direction they don’t have a ton of guys like that you know I now I’m grasping of straws but like I like Loren a lot maybe he’s a guy who could get a little bit more opportunity I I like him every time he’s out there so looking for something you know you talk about the lack of five out five scoring and you talk about but who’s going to come back here and like it feels like there’s a lot of pressure on DOI coming back McMahon and DOI and yarn C Yar C scored 20 last year laugh all you like he close no like he got surgery anywhere to be found I don’t think he’s a factor but I mean he’s gonna be a tronto maple leaf this year is he not good question like do you think he’s just I mean he had surgery so I don’t know how long that lasts but I’m not depending on him as a as a as a uh option really but like doy coming back in here feels like there’s a ton of pressure on him he didn’t score once before got hurt he was in a 133 game or however long Point drought when he was gone so that’s one guy McMahon can’t stay healthy it’s like it’s the team a team B situation very much so here I I don’t know I just we talked about third line Center they yeah they may be looking for more than that and you’ve mentioned hopefully big game hunting a little bit but we we do have buuy weighing in on we need some bottom Six Clip four please well yeah for sure we need some guys to contribute down in the bottom six for sure um got to find a way to manufacture some goals from those guys for sure I agree so can we is there a fair time to have a Reeves conversation as a guy that’s in there every night still played both s High both sides of a back toback for them plays close to seven minutes a night you saying you want him out of the lineup I’m saying he’d could be eligible to come out here and there yeah I just don’t you don’t you’re too hurt you don’t have anyone good to put in who’s going to score there you know like you know I mean Steves is scores every night in the AHL you come up you put him in the fourth line it’s going to look worse no it’s probably 1% better offensively no 10% better offensively whatever I I don’t disagree with that if that yeah is the biggest problem then you know ree’s not there to do that but there’s just so many guys in the bottom six they’re putting over there with no hope of a goal MH right and it’s like wellow they’re the good defensively but it’s like there’s no who’s the Hope Camp you’re like even when he comes back he’s not supposed to score and ree’s not supposed to score homberg same none of the guys they throw over other than the four guys gives you a hope in hell I’m going to to score I’m going to throw a little emphasis on Craig bruy on this and I think he’s done a heck of a job and I think we’ve had more than a sample size to suggest that at least for the Atlantic division I can tell you that the only two teams that look like they can win as best seven series is Florida and Toronto so everybody else I kind of have underneath yep so he’s done a good job but I think the onus is now on him is to help coach these guys in the bottom six the Toronto Maple Leafs may be taking a new approach to salary management which could directly impact Mitch marner’s contract negotiations during Kyle du’s tenure as general manager the team didn’t hesitate to spend heavily and this trend began with a six-year extension signed by Marner in 2019 at the time marner’s $10.9 million annual cap hit set the market for Superstar Wingers surpassing comparable players like moiko Ronan of the Colorado Avalanche who signed a six-year deal with a 9.25 million annual cap hit now however times seem to be changing tsn’s Pierre LeBron recently reported that the Maple Leafs have implemented an internal salary cap aiming to ensure no player earns more than Captain Austin Matthews who signed a 4 extension worth $13.25 million per season in August 2023 the team’s primary concern revolves around marner’s agent Daren Ferris who according to LeBron might push for a percentage of the total salary cap instead of a fixed dollar amount this could result in marner’s cap hit exceeding Matthew’s $1 13.25 million conflicting with aaf’s new Financial strategy Ferris is known for driving negotiations to the Limit often taking his clients to free agency this raises fears that discussions between Marner and the leaf could drag on until July 1st giving Marner and his Camp all the leverage in negotiations another complicating factor is the rising market LeBron noted that Miko Ronin believes he could secure $14 million per season as a free agent this Sparks the question could Marner demand even more and would Ferris take that gamble knowing the Leafs might opt to move on and sign another player Marner has made it clear on multiple occasions that Toronto is where he wants to be as a local player with deep ties to the city he’s expressed his desire to spend his entire career wearing the blue and white of the leaves however staying with the team may require him to accept less than market value especially if the front office remains committed to its new salary structure such a sacrifice could be vital for the team’s Collective success and to avoid Financial issues that have plagued the recent past while negotiations are still in the early stages it’s evident that marner’s future with the Leafs is at stake Maple Leaf’s fans may need to prepare for the possibility of significant changes but they can also trust in the players commitment to the city and the franchise to find a compromise the Maple Leaf’s decision to implement an internal salary cap reflects a broader shift in their team building philosophy after years of prioritizing top-end Talent with Hefty contracts the organization appears determined to strike a balance between Superstar contracts and depth throughout the roster this strategy aims to avoid the pitfalls of past Seasons where a lack of financial flexibility often left the team vulnerable in critical playoff moments for Mitch Marner this shift creates a unique Challenge on one one hand his value to the Leafs is undeniable a consistent top scorer and Elite playmaker Marner has been instrumental in driving the team’s offense on the other hand his ability to command a salary that rivals or exceeds Austin Matthews could put the Leafs in a difficult position especially with a potential need to strengthen other areas of the roster as the 2023 to 24 season progresses the Leafs must weigh the potential consequences of sticking to their cap philosophy losing a homegrown Talent like Marner would undoubtedly sting for fans and organization alike however allowing one player to dictate financial terms beyond the team structure could hinder long-term success and force painful sacrifices elsewhere adding to the complexity is the looming free agency of William neander if the Leafs are to stick to their internal salary cap they may also face challenges in retaining neander who could command a significant raise balancing contracts for both Marner and nander within the new framework could prove to be the ultimate test for Toronto’s management team another Factor at play is the team’s ultimate goal winning the Stanley Cup while star players like Marner and Matthews are crucial history has shown that depth and balanced rosters often Prevail in the postseason if the Leafs fail to manage their finances effectively they risk falling short of building a championship caliber team even with a leite talent for Marner the decision to stay with the Leafs might come down to more than just dollars his connection to the city the fans and his teammates could be deciding factors if he prioritizes Legacy and loyalty over maximizing earnings there’s a strong possibility that he’ll work with a team to find a deal that benefits both parties negotiations will also test Darren Ferris known for his Hardline tactics in securing lucrative deals for his clients while pushing for top dollar is expected Ferris may need to weigh the risks of alienating the Leaf’s management and fan base a prolonged stalemate could damage marner’s relationship with the team and its supporters the Leaf’s management led by general manager Brad tring faces a pivotal moment tring’s reputation as a negotiator and team Builder will be on full display as he navigates this high-stake scenario striking the right balance could solidify his tenure in Toronto while a misstep might set the team back for years for Maple Leafs fans the coming months will be filled with anticipation and uncertainty
