[Music] hey there it’s Gary Parish welcome back to CBS Sports I own college basketball podcast where we sometimes discuss camel fighting doo birds leaky Black Matt norlander is here with me if you’re watching on YouTube you know what to do to the like button shouts to Brandon Davies and if you haven’t yet subscribed to the CBS sports college basketball YouTube channel I’d love it if you did that while you’re here let’s get into it ain’t much happened that uh you know ain’t much happened in the sport of college basketball since we last talked to you the most notable result it came inside Carver Hawkeye final score Iowa State 89 Iowa 80 it happened last night that means TJ osberger Cyclones are now eight- one with victories Over Marquette Dayton Iowa and Colorado the only loss on the resume it’s a 8381 loss to number two Auburn on a neutral Court norlander Iowa State went 29 and8 last season finished alone in second in the best conference in the country got a number two seed in the NCAA tournament made the sweet 16 finished eighth at kenpom and then returned the top four scorers from that team can you remind me again why you had Iowa State ranked outside of the top 20 in your pre-season rankings can we just talk about the game just could you remind me just one last time and then I’ll let this go but can you remind why you had Iowa State outside of your top 20 in your preseason rankings because every year there are teams picked inside the top 15 that wind up being certainly well outside of that and predict that the Iowa State Cyclones would be one such team I was wrong hold on one of us has to actually have accountability on this podcast so it will be me here we go that one’s on me I was wrong y here’s another one I’ll give myself one more how about this one how about this prediction yeah that was me I was wrong Iowa State by the way is the best ranked team in the net in strength of record in wins above bubble in kpi um all of those are where Iowa State outpaces everyone in the Big 12 uh predictive metrics still like Houston over Iowa State uh but it’s been an impressive go of it so far 4- one in Quad one and two that’s five games total they match the likes of Houston Baylor Kansas West Virginia those teams have all played five quad one and quad two games so far we won’t get too deep into the resume stuff it’s just December 13th but the point is this in Quad one and quad two right now Iowa state is four- one Houston is two and three in Quad one and quad two Baylor two and three Kansas is 3-2 overall and then West Virginia’s only played four games they’re two and two so alberger crew looking good I did watch this game uh Joshua Jefferson uh really the whole crew what they were able to show yet again I mean they had five guys scoring double figures Jefferson had 19 points 10 boards seven assists uh Curtis Jones had 23 points and they were able to overcome a 13-point road deficit against a hated rival it’s the first time in 10 years these obviously these schools play every other year uh um with your home or away and they play every year but every other year you’re going to get the home game or the road game and uh it had been 10 years since Iowa State won at Carver Hawkeye they get it done and we’re able to dictate the terms in the second half Iowa was was Iowa looked well oiled and on its way to a really nice and needed resume win uh but it was not good in the second half ISU clamped down just 27% from Beyond The Arc 32% overall from the field in the second half for Fran McCaffrey’s team and as a result Iowa State continues to build out a really really good resume meantime Iowa it’s seven and3 uh it’s got a one it’s got one halfway okay win over Washington State we’ll see I actually think Washington State might sneakily be able to build out an NCAA tournament roster we’ll see about that but um you got that you got a win over Northwestern at home at the buzzer shouts to Josh dicks um but they’ve lost to Utah State which is top 50 kenpom team lost two Michigan which is the top 25 kmom team and then just lost to Iowa state which is a top 10 team so Iowa as of this morning still does does not have a top 50 win and it has one uh halfway decent non-con game remaining against the Utah team that might not make the tournament I I thought for a minute we were in a trust the building situation last night when I turned it on I was like here we go it’s another trust the building situation Iowa state was down 13 and um you know when you’re down double digits on the road to your instate rival like you’re up against it I I I don’t have any data to support this I bet you when you go down double digits to your rival on the road it doesn’t usually well for you um and yet they they they looked apart in the second half added a another Quadrant One Victory that’s uh the third of the season and you know I I I’m lying I will keep going back to the fact that you had them outside of the top 20 in the in the preseason but I I I completely if I’m being honest with you I understand it if you’re if you if you decide I want to look for somebody that I want to look for somebody that everybody thinks is good that the computers think really good but I’m goingon to say they’re going to be the one that if you are searching for hey I gotta pick one I gotta pick somebody it made s because like you look at that roster this is what I led the top 25 and one on this morning you know I don’t know that that I I’m pretty sure there’s not a lottery pick on the roster I’m I’m I’m I bet there’s not a first round pick on the roster I I’m not 100% sure like I don’t know that I’d bet my whole 401K that there’s a second round pick on on the roster although I somebody on this team maybe multiple guys on this team are going to end up in the NBA but it’s not like the roster doesn’t pop they don’t have a first team All-American who came back but they this is a it’s a great college basketball team I don’t I I don’t think that’s hyperbolic this is a great college basketball team and for two years now um with a lot of the same pieces T.J alberger has had one of the the best teams in the country I I think I I think you would agree with that right oh without a doubt um and frankly it’s the it’s the switch on offense that has been uh the key here now I saw this team in person and Maui EAS Iowa State fans I know you’re with me on this easily can make the case should have beaten Auburn but didn’t but regardless that was a tremendous game and a first uh first day match up there they lose by two points in at the Lina Civic Center but Iowa State right now is third in offensive efficiency I think I might have mentioned this uh in my Maui recap from the Salt Lake City airport at 7 in the morning um previously under oelberg 52nd last season in offensive efficiency 114th the year before and his first season 171 um traditionally otzelberger who made a name for himself doing some uh good things at South Dakota State as well those teams you know even at that mid- major level none were absolutely outstanding previous to this his highest rank offensive team was 37th in the country his last year at South Dakota state in 2019 19 that team didn’t even win the summit league and make the N tournament so uh he’s been able to to flip the script entirely ISU was the number one team in adjusted defensive efficiency last season now it’s 12th it’s still really good but it’s not Elite right now we’ll see if that changes but uh having all those returning characters has brought about a plot twist that I don’t even think ISU fans expected at this level the fact that Iowa state has proven to be a team reliable literally every game so far to score at least 80 80 in every game what nobody saw this coming and it’s led to where they are now um good win nice win last notable non-conference game uh we might not be talking about the Cyclones here for a minute because they’re gonna I will I will you feel free to go ahead if you want to if you want to recap what they do against Morgan State on December 22nd by all means I won’t stop you but that’s a block that’s a block material uh they’re at Colorado to open on December 30th and then they’re home against Baylor on Saturday January 4th so about three weeks from now is their next truly Marquee game there but we’ll see they they played Colorado in Maui and now uh it’s going to be one of those weird deals where that was not a n that was not a conference game it was technically a non-league game and they’re going to play the Buffalo three times so maybe they get picked off on the road to start Big 12 play but otherwise it’s been uh it’s been a really great job by alberger who yet again has has the Cyclones in position to be uh to be well seated and now you know it’s all but a lock here he’s been the four season and each season they’ve made the tournament and he is pacing toward each season being better than than the one before first year they were an 11 seed that broke through to the second weekend uh year after that they were a six seed but got knocked out in the first round last season to make the sweet 16 again a two seed and now who knows they may well have a chance at a one seed once we get to March and um I I know I mentioned this when we did the Iowa State Summers shoot around episode I don’t have all of those numbers right in front of me right now I didn’t plan on mention it again but as you’re talking about it it pops into my hand he’s like also on track to go down as like maybe the most accomplished Iowa State coach in history and I I know TJ would say oh it’s way too early for that type of stuff but like he’s on Pace to do things that have um that have never been done at Iowa State with that men’s basketball program right now only four teams in the country rank inside of the top 15 in adjusted offensive efficiency and adjusted defensive efficiency in both categories according to kpom and they are right now um Iowa State uh Tennessee Houston and Duke all four of those schools are in the top 15 of both offense and defense according to kenpom right now and um they they could run off here I you know it’s always probably a little silly to think somebody’s gonna go get into a big 12 schedule and just you know go on a long winning streak that’s not usually the way that League works but according to kenpom right now for what whatever it’s worth they are projected to be favored in each of their next 17 games they would be a projected favorite in each of their next 17 games and are not as at according to current numbers would not be an underdog again according to kenpom until February 22nd when they play at Houston and kenpom has that right now as a Houston 71 uh Iowa State 68 projected score so I don’t know that they’re going to actually win 177 more in a row in fact clearly I would bet against that any smart person would tell you to but based on current numbers and current rosters they are projected to be a favorite in their next 17 games they uh they could have a really nice nice record uh for the for the second consecutive Year all you want to talk a stacked Saturday because we have a ton of games to lay out here it is the best Saturday of the season so far by far is that your way of saying you’re ready to get updated records in the final four and one actually not get sports book that you went four- one in the final four- one last week you really went three and two just like I went three and two you’re starting to sound a little bit like Patrick Reed you know always just trying to get over on everybody just constantly improving you’re the guy who consistently lies about your performance in the final 4 and one can we just move on please I went three and two last week that’s a fact you could check the tape you went three and two last week also AFF even even though you try to suggest otherwise check the tape anymore by the way that they used to literally had to have to check the tape this this show is not on tape it’s on video it’s actually on tape yeah I take it put it in the tape done with the lies it’s on tape some I bet you it’s on tape somewhere I bet it’s not on tape anywhere correct there we go yeah yeah but still I think you should check the tape if you want to so that means the season records are now GP 13 and 12 mat norlander 11 and 14 it’s an insurmountable lead people are calling it an insurmountable lead or a person I think people I if you do a goog if you do a Twitter search right now for at Gary peris CBS and insurmountable lead you won’t even believe what what pops up and after you’re done with that one do one on Luigi mangion because like you won’t believe what pops up there either doing it it’s wild out there it’s time for the final four in one presented by FanDuel Sports B make every moment more make every moment more game one Saturday noon Eastern it’s number 17 Texas A&M versus number 11 Purdue we’re doing it inside Caitlyn Clark Fieldhouse you can watch it on CBS that’s America’s most watched Network it’s the network of stars Kim pom’s got it Purdue minus two little number that’s a little number well A&M’s 8-2 Purdue is 8-2 this is a really nice matchup this kind of game is scheduled because they no longer do the crossroads classic where you had the four Indian based teams that all played and rotated by the year Notre Dame Butler Purdue and Indiana and so in absence of that uh you know produc still wants to use that building and play a game in there of No and so they get Texas A&M to come in this is a quality game and uh as you said it right there on the on the eye on uh on Saturday um A&M America’s most watch Network yeah correct network of stars correct uh A&M’s got way Taylor who still has not he’s not busted out all the way yet uh Zurich Phelps been uh a nice addition and uh and has been certainly a a big supplement to to buzz Williams’s program to getting off to a relatively nice start um they’re coming off wins against kraton and Ruckers is A&M at the Players era festival and then Wake Forest in Texas Tech so they’re on this stretch here non-conference wise they played Oregon before that where they’ve got one high major after another after another after another and now they go up against a Purdue team that that is again equipped with you know a point guard of of no Oregon has that kraton has that Rutter has that Wake Forest has that Texas Tech not to the same extent but they’ve they’ve fared pretty well overall here for Purdue um G to get tested and wait I don’t think that Purdue Purdue has played really good teams Bama Marquette uh most notably there &m style is just a little bit different than anyone they’ve played so far uh you said the number here is Purdue minus two I will I will go with Purdue on that number I will take the boiler makers in their home state to get it done get a win um but good balanced matchup top 20 matchup I like it uh good chance this is closed for 40 straight minutes here give me the boiler makers yeah that’s uh that’s a little number for a program the stature of the boiler makers in their home state I don’t know why it took us why we had to make four-way tailor before we got one that could lead a uh top 20 team in scoring but that’s what it took you know whatever it takes so now we got way tether the fourth I would argue he is starting to break out you’re a little skeptical that the breakout is happening because I’ve seen it coming no I’m saying you know he had the potential to be a top 10 player in the country going in and he has not been that so far but he might well we might look up in a few weeks and he’s there but he’s not there yet I’m a Texas A&M fan I’m a white Taylor fan but but that’s such a little number with a program the stature of Purdue in its home state inside Caitlyn Clark Fieldhouse I’ll lay the two points with the Purdue bullet makers game two Saturday 3:30 p.m. Eastern it’s Arizona State versus number nine Florida inside Killer Mike Arena you can watch it on the SEC network Kim pom’s got it Florida minus8 what’s your assessment of Florida let’s talk about Florida for a second what’s your assessment of Florida all right we’ll do Florida then we’ll do Arizona state by the way Killer Mike from the a this game is in Atlanta it’s the holiday Hoops giving thing I think that’s what it’s called um it’s a weird one isn’t it isn’t it one of the weird ones sure sure um you won’t catch me saying anything in Atlanta is weird uh that’s a that’s a loud and proud town and nothing but respect for the ATL um I don’t mean it like that I just mean you got I just mean Florida and Arizona State playing on Saturday in Atlanta is kind of weird uh well that’s it’s one of multiple games happening there um so yeah Florida 9 and0 Arizona State’s also had a nice season so far this is a good game I’m glad you picked it but hasn’t played a really good team yet and we’ll see if Arizona State winds up being a really good team um best wins at FSU probably not going to make the tournament uh beat Wake Forest team again I you know I I I had Wake Forest in the top 15 the the the deakes are 8 and3 but they’re 108 kmom right now they’re 108 they’re a power Conference team that’s 8 and3 started the year like top 40 Tex forward right now and be like hey what’s going on with kenpom and just see what you get I’m not even getting him going there’s no chance no he will lose his mind no I’m not he probably will I got too much to do I can’t I cannot do just text him and be like we should all hey anybody that has Steve forb cell number text him to and just be like what’s going on with Kim poop I’m not even kidding if I did that right now there’s a real chance he would just call during the middle of immediately immediately hit you back immediately hit you back and be like all right listen I know I’m a Joo guy so maybe I’m just too stupid to understand this oh boy I love he hadn’t thought about he hates all the computers he hates all the computers and I don’t blame him like wait for you I I don’t know I don’t know if it’s right or wrong I just know that it’s offensive to Steve forb I guarantee it gotta anyway the well Steve Forbes couldn’t beat Florida uh 7558 that’s adding to it uh UF also has a win over witch state they’re 88th right now and Virginia which is 101 the point is they’re undefeated uh they’re highly ranked they’ve been crushing a ton of teams but they haven’t beat a team of note and in addition to this obviously uh in the background is this uh investigation Todd golden which has still not been uh resolved and finished so he’s continued to coach throughout this and you know no additional information has come out about any of that so we wait to see when that has resolution but he has not been suspended throughout all of it and Florida has uh maintained an undefeated Mark here we’ll see if he can get out of the weekend and still be without a scratch on the on the L column here Arizona state is a quality team but Gators are intriguing because we don’t they’re highly ranked they’re undefeated how good are they they’re yet another quality team that’s helping build out the sec’s overall reputation um so I don’t know we wait and see on that real quick and then take it from Florida with what you want GP Arizona state is eight- one has the loss that was competitive at Gonzaga but it’s got better wins than Florida right now uh neutral against Santa Clara um New Mexico beat St Mary’s it’s narrow but um they’ve got a they’ve got a chance here and they’ve got young young good talent uh Jose snon and Jaden quainton both a couple of freshmen who’ve been good Adam Miller has stepped up the season him in solid so um admittedly this kind of game you got to love col of troops to maybe want to specifically find the time and bring it up on the TV but it’s got a chance to be really entertaining here and we’ll find out a bit more about one of these teams because it’s uh it feels like a tossup to me the number is pretty big I’m going to pick it before you give me what you want to give me on these teams I’m going to take Arizona State to get inside this number here um but I think the there’s a there’s a chance that Florida might just you know wipe the floor again and we look up and they wind up winning this thing by 18 but I’ll take the Sun Devil to be inside the number I I’ve got Arizona state in the top 25 and one right now I mean you mentioned it uh only one loss it’s it’s the Gonzaga loss they’ve got four top 100 wins I guess there’s not some big signature win quite yet but I’ve got them in the top 25 and one let’s talk about Florida um they’re ninth in the AP poll right now I’ve got them 16th in the top 25 and one and I don’t want to say every day but some days Florida fans notice that tweet me and ask me why I have Florida so low I I’ve made a promise to myself uh I’ll break it sometimes I guess if I feel like there’s a valid question but I’m just not going to spend my time arguing with people about rankings on social media um but I do get asked often like why are why am I lower on Florida than say AP voters are in Florida or the computers are in Florida because they have strong computer numbers so here would be the explanation for that um I had them 22nd to start the season now they’re 9 and0 and all nine wins have come by at least 13 points they’ve got strong computer numbers that’s the good but their best win probably is Florida State they have zero wins over top 70 teams in the net or top 70 teams at torvic or top 60 teams at Kon I’ve got 26 teams in the top 25 and one you can probably figure out the math on that trivia time how many teams that I have in the top 25 and one have at least one quadrant one win I’m gonna say 25 and Florida’s the only one that doesn’t that’s a that’s just a blind guess it feels like you’re leading me down that path oh you’re right 25 of the 26 teams have at least one quadrant one win um Auburn and Oregon have a national best for each um the only score that doesn’t is Florida they’re zero and zero in quadrant one two and0 in quadrant 2 3 and 0 and quadrant 3 4 and0 in quadrant four strength of schedule right now is 305 according to the net um so you can go to the AP poll if you want to and do the same thing there’s 25 teams in that 23 of the 25 teams in the AP poll have at least one quad one win the only teams that don’t number nine Florida and number 22 Cincinnati so Florida might turn out to be great that’s not the point I’m making um I’m aware of the strong computer numbers but I’m not typically somebody who is going to March you from 22 into the top 10 when you haven’t beaten anybody in the top 70 of the net or top 60 of any of the computers I normally reference like typically if you’re going to go from outside of the top 20 to inside of the top 10 I I need you to beat somebody at some point and at this point uh they really haven’t I don’t know that they have a win over a lock NCAA tournament team or perhaps even a likely NCAA tournament team right now so they might turn out to be great but they do not have literally they they are the only team in the top 25 and one um that that doesn’t have a quadrant one win and uh you know I think that says something about what they’ve actually accomplished so far this season I know what that says I’m a Sun Devil look at me I’m a Sun Devil plus eight baby give it to me plus eight I’m a sundevil game three Saturday 5:15 p.m. Eastern it’s Louisville at number five Kentucky inside Rick patino Arena you can watch it on ESPN Kim pom’s got a Kentucky minus 11 um Rick patino guided both of these programs to National Championships pay respect acknowledge Him get your one up norlander get your one up acknowledge Rick patina good acknowledge Rick patina I’m not getting my one up right now I get your one up and acknowledge Rick patina not gonna happen um did you see what Pat Kelsey said earlier this week he said man I’m my wife’s hot I’m cool yeah I basically so I here’s the headline from uh one of my go-to sources for college basketball news and that’s of course the daily mail um Louisville coach bizar thanks his hot wife in press conference first of all I think there’s nothing but appropriate times and places to thank your hot wife for a lot of things in fact if if the mic just picked it up all of 37 seconds ago my hot wife was calling me I’m not quite sure why she knew I was podcasting but then again she was going to to pick up a Christmas present I don’t even know if my wife knows I have a podcast I don’t even know if she knows this exist she definitely knows that I was podcasting and yet that didn’t uh that didn’t stop her all the same there um here’s what Kelsey said quote we get a bunch of well he was apparently here the directly you know what I’m going to quote the Daily Mail directly the okay I do that all the time of course why would we not Kelsey was asked about the emotional challenges of getting ready for Mid major for a mid- major like UTEP compared to Blue Blood programs uh comparing it to like Duke and Kentucky uh not to mention Duke is arguably the best team in the ACC and the wild cats are the Cardinals biggest Rivals um quote we get a bunch of free sneakers we get we wear suits to work Kelsey said my kids are healthy my wife is hot I’ve got a pretty good life we get to play college basketball we get to play in the Yum Center we get ready for UTEP kelse he said sounds good to me and you know what I appreciate a man that can shout at his hot wife anytime any place good on you Pat Kelce Louisville right now it’s it’s just okay to start six and four we’ve talked about the fact they’ve had a couple players that had to end their season due to injuries there um here’s a here’s a hell of an opportunity to go and play Kentucky at rup uh what did you say this number is 11 big number that’s a lot of points to give to a man with a hot wife you know what I’m saying are you saying Mark Pope doesn’t have a hot wife no I’m not saying that at all exactly what you might be saying I’m just I’m just saying 11 11 I just named Mark Pope National Coach of the Year yesterday don’t you try to don’t you try that I’m not the one haded Iowa State outside of the top 20 that’s not me no I’m just saying you have Yukon not losing a game by the way I that that I did have Yukon going undefeated yeah you did it’s not just just I got some arrows in the quiver just letting you know okay keep it tight over there okay all right okay how hot do you think Mark Pope’s wife is I don’t I find it I find it wildly inappropriate to be commenting on other men’s wives I don’t think I’m so we have we have found the one topic on this podcast you’re unwilling to go to yes the one topic you want to back into Luigi please let’s go back to I think I think Luigi’s he’s got nice abs gosh they said Kim K should get him out of jail and then make him a skims model Luigi 11 points is that’s a lot but eff it I’m going with Kentucky has looked tremendous no CA obviously but at home R Arena man that that fan base is be prepared for that let’s go ahead and get get a game there in December that’s what I was told Marquett is the highest ranked team to play at Dayton arena in the regular season are they maybe it’s always wanted to see a game at UD Arena not yet done that but this is a this is a pretty awesome opportunity for a daon team remember they’ve already got a win over a top 10 Big E team at the time they beat Yukon and Maui and now they get Marquette coming to their home floor here um cam Jones here’s a little nugget I got a trivia time for you yeah homie from Memphis Yeah cam Jones right now yeah he’s averaging 20 points yeah more than 20 points and more than five assists right now mhm how many players in D1 do you think are averaging at least 20 points and five assists cam Jones yep the right he Ain no Ace Bailey um how many okay so we know it’s cam Jones I’m must say there’s three players in the country that are doing that you lose Camy Jones only player in the country in fact my little homie from Memphis only player in the country averaging at least 20 and five um if he continues at this pace give you the exact uh the exact number right now for cam Jones who is just an absolute joy to watch play basketball 20.3 points 6.6 assists in addition to 4.7 rebounds um but if he clears 20 and five he’ll be only the third Big East player since uh 8687 at least to average those uh Bryce cotton did it with Providence in 20134 underrated player good dude to remember Bryce cotton that’s a good name and Billy Donovan in 8687 average more than 20 points and five assists people forget he could really ball um this is a really good game it could come down to turnovers marquette’s one of the best teams in the country at turning teams over 17.2 per game is what Marquette averages meanwhile Dayton is top 10 and not turning it over 9.2 giveaways which team wins that battle might wind up winning the game Dayton plus one give me the Flyers straight up I know you’ve never been to Dayton Arena UD Arena um I have Shaka smart has in fact Shaka smart and I were there together his run to the final four at VCU again you were so you C for uh for do you covered that uh first four run that year that uh that would have been 2011 I was I was first year covering the tournament for c yeah I was I was in Dayton I was there for that game I don’t remember where I went after that but I was there for that um so having having shared that shock and I have shared an experience in Dayton he probably has no memory of you being there I barely have a memory of me being there but you remember it I do remember it shock and I have shared experiences in and I not comfortable picking against him in an arena where I saw him take a VCU team and launch a run to the final four like we shared that together shock and I did that together went to the 2011 final four and it started it started for us in Dayton I can’t all these years later go back to Dayton and expect him not to flourish in that place the same way he did Once Upon a Time so I’m going to when you combine that with my little homie from Memphis I got to lay the one point golden eagles minus one all right that means it’s number one team in the country Illinois has I believe three wins in its history against number one teams and all of them have come in Champagne I believe um Tennessee minus 3 super intriguing game here who you got earlier the week I think you and I we were talking about Tennessee and I believe what we agreed on is not sure Tennessee is really the best team in the country but it is the team that deserves to be ranked number one in the AP poll right now did we have that conversation or am I making that up yeah we had that conversation okay um coincidentally I was talking to let’s just say an SEC coach earlier in the week and I said hey what what like your league super deep and super strong and could go down as like the best in history I was like who do you really think like I I I can look at the rankings but like you’ve seen it you know it who do you really think is the best team in this league Tennessee that’s what I was telling they they have the highest ceiling they have the uh smallest things that concern you team’s legitimate um this feels like a trust the building situation to me okay this feels like a trust building situation to me what’s the name of the building they changed it they did something to it they changed it they what was it traditionally known as assembly there we go right assembly what it wasn’t assembly I just always hated we should never have two assemblies I wasn’t I was never okay with that I was never okay with having two assemblies it was Assembly Hall yeah I don’t like that that seems ridiculous to me why couldn’t they work that out I don’t know I I think I don’t I think Illinois might have come first but I don’t I don’t know that to be the case I don’t Indiana fans I don’t know that to be the case somebody you you can’t it’s like George Foreman naming all his kids you know what happened here is one of these got built first it wound up working out people started noticing and they said you know what we got to trust the building right there with you buddy I’m also going to take Illinois as a home dog just like I did with Dayton not a flip on that mic here uh GP earlier in the show had said there are four teams MH that are top 15 in offensive and defensive efficiency we put up a poll and asked our live audience which team do they trust the most those four teams were Duke Houston Iowa State and Tennessee NADA who is uh who is leading that poll Iowa state is leading this poll 64% then you got Tennessee at 24% Duke at 7% and then Houston comes in last at 5% and yet Houston has been the most reliable team over the past interesting Iowa State you know what some of that could be Cyclone fans excited in the chat here the morning after they’re populating even more but that’s a big time which one do you trust most GP Duke Houston Iowa State Tennessee who do you trust most big picture over the next three months Iowa State there we go you’ve always hated Rick Barnes I don’t know why they would be outside of the weekend Friday we dodged we we could have gone a Friday night final 4 and one this at Pinnacle Bank Arena Indiana at Nebraska keep an eye keep an eye on it I mean this I frankly I I’ll be honest okay I know that you wanted to open the show give me grief over the Iowa State ranking and that was a fine decision personally I I was prepared for you to open Today’s Show laying out your Friday your travel plans I figure you definitely booked your flight to New York to get you in time in front of a television build out your entire night around the fact that Indiana’s got to play at Nebraska tonight man that is the hooers TR 40th at kenpom trying to get into that top 25 at kenpom going on the road and facing a Nebraska team that is six and2 Pinnacle Bank Arena I thought this was B Block material at worst but nevertheless here we are you know what I uh I’m not usually in studio on Saturdays during the season unless it’s like you know Conference Championship weeks or the NCAA tournament so I’m not usually in New York on Friday night and I actually had this thought you know at some point yesterday or whenever I was like man gonna be in the greatest city in the world on a Friday night what am I gonna get into I’m just going to watch the hooers go into Pinnacle Bank that’s what I’m getting into damn straight that’s the only game of not on Friday that’s a tough situation man that is not that is not how you wna that is not that’s not how you want to spend a Friday night in Pinnacle Bank buddy that sounds like a nightmare that is that’s a tough one there um all right Saturday is slammed uh GP will be in studio for CVS Sports Network I will be in studio from about 5:00 pm Eastern on uh n CBS Sports HQ Studios uh just down the road in Stanford Connecticut so so uh watch us both have it on uh have it on another another screen we’ll be uh providing commentary highlights of Plenty it is that kind of Saturday and this by the way is intentionally designed Army Navy on CBS on uh Saturday during the day always an incredible uh viewing experience there but the only College well go ahead CH it’s just a beautiful thing to watch put your eyes on yes and by the way uh contract extended all the way to 2038 Army Navy CBS where it where it should be um but because it’s the only only college football game of the day thankfully you know college coaches and I guess TV networks probably play a certain role in this as well um this Saturday and especi especially you know in in recent years here has been really loaded up with non-conference games and it look you know intentionally after we get past the mte stuff you had a lot of finals this week for a lot of schools even the next few days after this are not populated with with a lot of games this is the one where teams are like and teams you know top 30 top 40 coaches are looking like okay we got to get one more good non-conference game on the Slate let’s put it on the second Saturday in December really really cool thing and as a result if you’re a college trops fan just loaded with games throughout the day so non-final four And1 games to keep an eye on obviously there’s a biggie that we didn’t get to yet we’ll get to that in just a second uh but we’ll go in chronological order 7-2 Memphis at 9 And1 Clemson which is ranked 16th in the country that is going to get your day going on Saturday at 11 Eastern on ESPN 2 really good opportunity for both teams if if Memphis can play well that actually has the potential to be a really really good game um the uh Hoops giving Fest in Atlanta we talked about that earlier with Florida and Arizona State Auburn and Ohio State will go before that uh Auburn’s ranks second in the country Ohio state is six and three uh this is a one Eastern tip on ESPN 2 Buckeyes have been getting deblur as of late we’ll see if they can avoid that here kind of a big game for the Buckeyes for any kind of non-conference heft whatsoever um the the cross town whatever we’re calling it rivalry shootout I don’t know what zip them up zip them up zip them up they this game now this is a function of the big 12’s media rights deal with with ESPN dude Xavier at number 22 Cincinnati these are teams that are combined 15 and three this game is on ESPN plus what are we doing awesome game zip them up you can’t put a murder on network television orlander you got you got to take a Mur you got to take a possible murder to a streaming platform everybody knows this it is on a streaming platform them up tremendous rivalry game every year they play what was my what was my dude’s name to Holloway there we go of course zip them up zip them up without a doubt that was so good qu that will live in infamy as it should uh in fact the zip them up game happened the same day as the christiany how do we both remember that because we bring it up almost every year on the show and I remember because I how about this here’s a GP ISM for me I remember this because I whatever game was happening at the I was at the Garden that day watching both of these things play out in the Press Room of of of MSG I can’t even remember the game that I was covering but what I was covering was not relevant it it was the Kentucky and Watford Indiana stuff and the Savor Kenny freeze to Holloway my guy y y Gates involved in that I mean just oh Yan Gates was definitely involved in that I think Yancy Gates was the one that he might kill somebody I think I think I remember looking at yansy Gates and going he might kill somebody I don’t remember thinking that but regardless it was an incredible incredible day and it amped the Rivalry so much so that I think Unfortunately they had to take it off campus for like two years or four years because of that thankfully this is now back on campus Cincinnati gets to host that’s a two Eastern tip um 2:30 Eastern ACC Network Syracuse at Georgetown I only include that both teams aren’t going to make the tournament probably although Georgetown 7- two Cool’s at least gotten off to a decent start with a with an easy non-conference schedule I just can this game mean something again soon please like Georgetown Syracuse thankfully they have continued to play even though both programs have been down uh both programs have undergone had coaching changes um in the past year and I just want Georgetown and Syracuse to mean something again so hopefully this isn’t a deal where you know they’re kind of playing and it’s just whatever and the attention around it really is is non-existent outside of those two uh districts if you will and fan bases there um but damn I’d love to see Georgetown and Hughes mean something again at least they’re you know making a point to schedule each other even though they’ve long no longer been in the uh in the same league um a good one that I thought GP was going to put on the final 4- one number 24 UCLA 8- one is going to play Arizona which is four and remember Arizona is 4 and four this is a 3:30 Eastern tip on ESPN 2 this game is played in Phoenix I’d love for it to be on campus but this year it is not um before I continue GP uh damn urgent game for Tommy Lloyd’s Wildcats here because they got big 12 Play coming up around the corner here and they have been among the most disappointing if not the most disappointing team in the country to this point yeah this is the first time Tommy’s ever dealt with something like this in his head coaching career like he’s never had a team that was struggling I that’s that’s accurate right his he’s never had a team that struggled and this team is um struggling out of the gates we talked period going back to like when he was an assistant forag he might have never had a team struggle ever this this really is at this point he just hasn’t had something like this before yeah right and we talked about it previously I was always concerned about the the roster I just looked I I thought what left was better than what came in and yet I was just like but you gotta have him in there somewhere because it’s it’s Tommy and it’s Arizona and he’s never not had a good team but I don’t want to say I’m not surprised that they’re four and four because I am surprised they’re four and four I’m not surprised that they’ve uh underachieved a little relative to expectations because I I think the expectations were largely tied to this is Arizona and Tommy Lloyd as opposed to look at that roster that’s one of the 20 best rosters in the country and here’s a biggie here we’ll see uh we’ll see how it goes um I look forward to uh the postgame interview with Andy cats um CBS Sports Network 5:30 Eastern St Bon Adventure is nine and one right now they are they are looking good so far in the uh in the Mark Schmidt uh Adrian Mo norowski era they play seven and4 Providence this is at mohagen Sun uh that’s a good tip GP will be in studio of course and uh if bonana can win this then really might be cooking with something here and this is obviously a really good opportunity for not just the program but for the A10 which has done decently for itself good and big weekend by the way for the Atlantic 10 5:30 tip on CBS Sports Network catch GP in studio there and then we’ll obviously also have highlights on CBS Sports HQ uh then three more of note I’ll uh I’ll drop the chronological order to save the biggie for last uh St Mary’s plays Boise State St Mary’s is also quietly 9 and one um really heavy resume game for both teams that’s 9 Eastern on Saturday uh you’ve got seven and3 kraton which just apparently had two two you know uh non-impact players just uh they quit the team they’re going in the portal um kraton is at Alabama which is 7-2 seventh rank in the country that’s an SEC network game at 8:30 but it is a good one and we want to see what kraton can do on the road here uh Alabama you know this in the preseason this looked like it might potentially be a game between two teams ranked in the top 15 kraton currently unranked but has been uh has been improving as of late we’ll see uh we’ll see what we get there and then the other biggie of course uh frankly if it wasn’t such a loaded day of college troops uh because it’s so loaded it’s why you’re in the studio it’s why I’m in the studio I’d be there at the Garden but I will not be there uh Gonzaga eighth ranked in the country going against number 14 Yukon this is an eight Eastern tip on Fox and uh it’s a big time match up here I mean Yukon looking to get yet another quality win in December December treating the Huskies much better than November did uh to this point here this game carries a lot of significance uh for both teams but for Yukon more than Gonzaga Gonzaga 7-2 he got a win over Baylor at this point one at San Diego State has defeated Indiana could sure use another nice resume win uh here the only one remaining on the schedule outside of WCC play they’ve got a game against UCLA after Christmas and before New Year’s be interested to see what Gonzaga does in this one with its offense going against a Yukon team that obviously runs a really good offense as well these are both top five in the country adjusted offensive efficiency at KP site and it was Baylor then Texas now it’s Gonzaga Xavier is waiting by the way next week but that is a uh that’s a really good matchup and a chance I really hope that we’re talking on our next po about uh about a game here that went into the highs if not the 90s here um because both these teams if really clicking overall can uh can really make it happen so uh a really cool game between two awesome programs at the Garden that should be an awesome Saturday night affair all right is that we’re going to call that a pod is that a podcast we’re going to call it a pod uh I think that’s a podcast uh GP and I if we are able Sunday is is is Barren there’s nothing of of true note uh from a national perspective Sunday’s a good day to just spend time with your hot wife and healthy children I think I will be doing that um anyway the point is this uh we don’t know how our SAT I’ll be with my wife and children not yours I didn’t want anybody to get the wrong idea fair enough fair enough um Saturday night with GP in studio in New York City and I’ll be in studio in Stanford uh we don’t yet know how our workflows will go however because Sunday is just has nothing if we are able and in a position to podcast Saturday and recap everything we will do that for you and do a a rare Saturday late night recap but if uh either of us winds up going too long and it gets you know after midnight or well after midnight um then we’ll push that off and we’ll give it to you at some point on Sunday uh and make sure that gets taken care of for you but we we want to get you the podcast sooner than
