Michigan State North Carolina uh also a game between two teams that have some pretty massive issues in the front Court also a game between two teams that like to play three guards also a team a game between two teams that can get out and run also a rematch of a recent NCA tournament matchup so here you have it I’m pretty excited for this one I think this will be a good barometer to use a word you like to use on what exactly this Michigan State basketball team is early in the season I prefer litmus tests Gregory let let’s not act like we don’t do this every day come on now yeah litmus test yeah big litmus that’s what they call me uh big lit for short uh this this game is intriguing given the matchup of it uh obviously um UNC did knock Michigan State out of the tournament last year if people remember correctly um it was a close game in the first half but then UNC ended up pulling away um kind of a an interesting team Dynamic for North Carolina uh we’ll get more into like the actual you know player PR ects of it but this is a game I think you brought it up and it’s it’s a big talking point I think for me in this preview this game is very conducive to Michigan State playing a three guard lineup if they want to now we saw in that Memphis game there was a lot more or they were I I feel like ISO was a little bit more reluctant to go to that three guard lineup as much or as quickly as he needed to this game is very conducive to do that um you know I I believe the tallest guard that North Carolina plays in that starting lineup is probably Trimble and Trimble 63 I think at Max if I’m not I can double check that but RJ Davis isn’t necessarily tall either he’s six foot Elliot kdo is 61 so if Michigan state did want to go with their three guard lineup this would be very a very conducive uh team playing match up to do so and then also there’s nothing really to worry about in the front court with North Carolina um there they don’t really have a low post scoring threat um and you know if we’re doing the whole do I like this matchup thing I don’t know if I like the matchup but it is a team that I I feel like Michigan State can match up with and use their best lineups if they wanted to why do you say you don’t know if you like the matchup because I feel like everything we’re saying would be reasons to like the matchup there’s one answer I think I have in my head I’m wondering if it’s your answer to this well my answer is that the three guards of North Carolina are better than the three guards on Michigan State that’s sort of where I was going so it’s it’s kind of it’s interesting I think this Michigan State team in general is not going to see many teams that are built like them right like where they at least when your three guard lineup is on the floor it’s rare to see three small little guards running around with a smallish Center when Ker’s in there like it’s just kind of you’re gonna be the mismatch more often than you are going up against the same thing North Carolina is also a team that is normally the mismatch normally you’re like how are we going to deal with North Carolina is three guards so if that is where this heads it really just becomes like who’s better and I don’t know if I’d feel good or bad about that if I’m Michigan State because for once we’re looking at a game where like we’re not worried about mismatches but for on the other hand it’s like well [ __ ] RJ Davis and Seth Trimble are way better than anyone on our team and like is Jay I this is an interesting question how where does Jay stack up in the power rankings of the guards in this game would you take Jace before you would take cadell no I think I would but I oh oh no wait I’m sorry I’m sorry no no no my my apologies yes I would take are you saying take jaay over kadoo yeah like what who are the best guards in this game in order I think I would go RJ Trimble Jace then kadoo then Akin or then Akens then Kad a then Kad wow okay I don’t hate that take kadoo is uh a pretty Elite assist guy but talking about R you talking about Ry sterio that’s the name yeah that’s that’s that’s what I’ve coined him he’s Ray Mysterio why is that because he’s flopping around he’s just he’s a a a little tiny wrestler that flies around with Reckless abandon he’s a WWE villain that’s yeah yeah yeah I can see that uh okay well good to know where you stand um okay so then is this a game like normally I think we point to matchups and say like well maybe Michigan State can win this game with their depth is this a game Michigan State can win with their depth you know I they have two five stars off the batch yeah the only thing with the only thing for me is that Michigan State goes deep I don’t necessarily see it as a they’re going deep because they’re so talented thing I think they’re going deep because because I think the talent is actually limited and they’re just trying to get a lot of guys out there but you know you look at North Carolina’s bench and you know Drake PW starting to come along um Ian Jax is a five star kid who has the ability to play uh you know fill it up uh when he gets going I probably would give the advantage to North Carolina’s bench as a whole given how you know how they’re playing right now but also that depends on who’s starting from Michigan State also because some of our best players have been off the bench at the same time like Jason has been coming off the bench um Coen Carr has been a little bit productive Off the Bench as well so I don’t know it also be interesting to see if Michigan state sticks with the same lineup in this game as well yeah sure yeah I what lineup do you want to see the lineup I want to see is Trey Trey Jace jayen Frankie ker you got Trey in there he was subject of some private group t discussion between you me and DK last night uh Trey was like minus 20 something in the Memphis game you’re you still want to see Trey in the lineup why I I just think that he’s more of a threat to score the basketball and when you look at the other things that when you look at the other things that he does um I think he does it I think he does them just as well uh as Jeremy fears now obviously that’s not the only thing you got to factor in here whether you want to admit it or not coaches have to handle kid have to handle some of these kids with kids gloves um Trey Hollman might be more like I’m okay with coming off the bench than other players but the Michigan State’s best lineup is the one I think I just stated okay um you guys are just not a program I would ever associate with being a kid gloves program but I get times are changing things have to everybody has to do it like that’s so against who ISO has always been and I don’t feel like he’s handling anything else with kid gloves you know yeah well well it’s I don’t think he usually handles things with kids gloves but I do think sometimes there are players that ISO feels like this connection with yeah that he to put it like he kind of feels like like he’s attaching himself to that kid and like that’s who he’s like mortgaging things on so I guess it’s less like treating him with kids gloves and more like there is some I don’t even want favoritism but it seems like there’s players over the years that ISO kind of just attaches himself to and like they mean a little bit more than the others it’s belief that’s what it is he believes in that and there’s nothing wrong with belief if that belief pays off one day it’s going to be uh very special and emotional for everybody involved I think but right now there’s I just don’t think there’s as much substance to the belief as we wish there was um the one thing I will push back on you know I’m a Critic of the guy we’re talking about Jeremy Fierce at times and I’m going to push back back hard on you on this you said I just don’t think there’s anything Trey Hollman does significantly worse than Fierce like he can do all the things that Fierce can do and he’s a threat I agree with you on like he needs to be guarded and that helps Jace Richardson when he’s out there for sure um I think you’re minimizing a little bit just how good fears is as a passer though like hollman’s a good passer fears is an elite passer and that is why like if it worked with fears it would be better in a lot of ways fears is kind of cadoi to me now fears doesn’t play like a WWE Flopper villain but isn’t like the best case for Fears trajectory wise pretty much like what kad’s done from year one to year two yeah I was a million percent take AO yeah just take like a more aggressive guy getting to the rim who still is an elite passer that’s sort of the cell here and I I wouldn’t want to be Banking and waiting on like maybe one day he’ll Elliot cadel but that’s kind of what we’re doing here um okay what happens with Michigan State’s front Court here because Jackson kler is your best front Court player but Jackson kler has struggled against athletes against size I don’t think North Carolina’s front court is good but I do think they have some size and some athleticism so can Coler torch these guys or is this not a Coler game um the the only reason I say it’s not a Coler game is if Jaylen Washington is who going to be the the center only because you know jayen Washington is not necessarily like you know someone that I would fear in the front court but he’s 610 yeah long arms like I he’s something that could affect him now if North Carolina shifts to like where they have ven Luben at Center then maybe you know you do some other things as you like small ball Jaylen Withers at the five like I think there’s some things that Coler could do in scoring against those guys but um you know this for all the front Court things that Michigan state has you know there’s a lot of similarities between North Carolina and Michigan State’s front cor situations there are yeah um Ker’s the best offensive option though pretty clearly in the front Court in this game right I don’t think Carolina has anybody with that type of bag yeah 100% we’ll see um can this be a Cohen car game that was one of my first notes when I did the Scout on this a little bit is like I think sometimes you run into issues with Cohen where he’s playing teams with like bigger physical front court options Andor I don’t know just mismatch stuff like you you probably don’t want to play Cohen at the three here but against a team that kind of is willing to just like run and transition and use their athleticism against the North Carolina THS I kind of really think this could be a big co- and car minutes game yeah I I I really like the idea of going three guards and then depending maybe match up dependent or depending on how the game’s going you maybe do something different with the four or five spot like maybe you go Frankie four and then another five where maybe you want to go uh car Coler um you know to get to just kind of get out and run maybe a little bit more uh I I I think that ISO has a chance to Tinker um given who North Carolina is going to put out there yeah okay okay what’s your confidence level coming into this one is this one getable uh I I I think it it’s getable it’s getable for sure um you know we can always we can go we can lean back on the classic you know it’s still Hubert vers ISO thing I know that doesn’t really work out as much but I still am a Hubert Davis skeptic um but the thing that scares me the most like I said when I when we started out though is that like yesterday when we had the game in the Michigan State game we had great performances from jayen and and from Jace and we lost by eight just because the other guards were able to play just as well and or out or not or outplay uh Michigan State’s guards now they did get a little bit from the front Court which gave him a little bit of a boost as well but we’re going to need something else from somebody else besides Jason Jaden in this basketball game because like I said you know Kad Trimble and Davis even they lost to Auburn they had 10 17 and 12 respectively like those guys are who is getting it done in the game before that Seth Trimble had 30 and RJ Davis had 30 like they they they really lean heavily on these guards and I think the ball pressure in the defense from Michigan state is going to be imperative because if you can cut off those two guys and force Kad to be the guy who’s beating you and taking a lot of shots Kad took 15 shots in that Auburn game did I think you feel good about your chances okay um I could see that I could see that for sure yeah I I think this one is getable but I worry a little bit that this is like a North Carolina bounce back beat up on somebody our own size type game like just in general here’s where I’m at with Carolina they’ve been really good in games against teams where they just have more Talent they have been running into big issues like big first half deficits against teams that have more size more Talent everything Kansas down 20 last night against Auburn down 20 so against Michigan State it does feel like it’s a game where their guards will at least be comfortable um I won’t be surprised because I’m never surprised when an ISO team like outperforms something but you know as much as we’re saying like Michigan State this is a matchup that fits us I think North Carolina is saying the same thing and I think North Carolina has the better players here so for that reason I am going to lean North Carolina I believe the spread uh is North Carolina minus 4 and a half at my bookie and uh kenpom has it at four let me check with diers real quick just because uh diers is the number one place that we go for our game projections in college basketball diemers is uh a model an analytics model that
