this is Maverick’s all access with Omaha Athletics hosted by Anna [Applause] bellinghausen well hello everybody Welcome to another LIVE edition of Mavericks All Access we got Omaha hockey up first Sam Stang Nolan krenzen and head coach my gabinet guys how are we doing doing great we’re doing great okay well six and eight to start the year and then you’ve won the last three of four what’s the vibe around this team how are you guys feeling yeah you know what it’s been good I think uh kind of been a growth here a little bit get lots of new players this year and and starting off uh hot and then get a little bit cold and and like you said three over last four wins here have been really great for the team and the guys been jelling and growing so it’s been a fun year yeah from the players perspective how has that been just seeing that early growth yeah like you said I think growth is the key word here um like you said a lot of adversity first uh first half of this year and I mean for the players at least from our perspective it’s just guys have been constantly working to get better the commitments there and it’s just been it’s cool to see guys just working so hard to constantly achieve that every day and it’s it’s starting to show up now Sam what have you seen obviously you’re a new piece of this team new piece of this program how’s it been fitting in and seeing that growth that Nolan’s talking about yeah it’s been a blast I mean um credit to these guys credit to the coaches and the returners and everybody um just doing an incredible job of of being so welcoming and um obviously we got that pretty much half our team is new this year so um it’s been a lot of fun to be a part of the the rapid growth that we’ve seen and the last few weeks have been a blast yeah I mean he mentioned half this team is new there a lot of pieces you’re trying to fit together what is that like from a coaching perspective to kind of put that puzzle together throughout the year yeah well we knew with last year’s success that I think we had uh nine players signed professional contracts after the season which is something you’re really proud of and excited for the guys to to do that and that means a new chapter is being built the following year so it’s been great it’s been great it’s it’s a learning curve a little bit for everybody from the coaches learning the new players and their skill sets and and how we can help them grow and how them support them so it’s a journey and it’s been a really fun one Nolan for you and meeting all these new faces whether they’re freshman or their transfers in what have been some of those first things you say to these guys to get them acclimated to this culture how do you set the tone for those guys um I mean honestly I think it just takes time um new city new place new team new guys I think it just takes a little bit of time till you see that commitment to the culture just continually build to where they understand okay this is what it means to be an Omaha Maverick this is how I carry myself every day this is what I need to know to be a successful hockey player and like I said I think those things um just start at the beginning and then grow progressively Sam you come in from Wisconsin what have been some of the first things you noticed when you got to Omaha and talked about that culture with the team and what they want to build here yeah um I mean one of the first things I noticed we got a lot of time to just hang out in the summer and um just the quality of guys that we had returning um I knew that was going to be a huge key um and then just from the moment I got here being able to start to get acclimated to the city and um once the season got going to the fans and the backer atmosphere and everything like that um it’s just been awesome to see how how special of a place it is and how special of a program it is yeah what initially Drew you to Omaha when you were in that transfer portal um I mean I think just for the most part initially it was the coaches they had recruited a little bit in high school um and they came back with that same um same want to coach me and um to to hear that I think what six years later that they still just took him a while to figure it out one the chance me that yeah it was H that was a big big draw for sure gabs you probably hear the word transfer portal and you might like cringe a little bit because I’m sure it’s added a lot of stress to your life because you know that’s a new thing in college athletics that we’re all getting used to right but how did you how have you approached that transfer portal and um trying to balance hey let’s bu build these guys from the ground up as freshman to okay we got to bring in some new pieces too yeah well one of the you know one of the positive has been that we have guys like uh Sam and Zach that we previously recruited so you have a relationship there and maybe didn’t get them that first time around but now they have an opportunity to to come to Omaha and we’ve had some really big time success with with guys in the portal so I think that word spreads as well where if you do a good job with guys like Zach and Sam and guys that we’ve had in the past it kind of spreads out that you know with that opportunity and and if they’re willing to work on their and good things are going to happen in this environment so that’s positive and I think you know you just have to be be really clear on what you’re about and what the expectations are that how we conduct ourselves here and what our program is about and I think when that’s clear then you you looked at the pieces if they’re going to fit in to help your program continue to have success and um so that’s kind of some of the things we do with the portal so you love the portal is what you’re saying not really not really I I mean I don’t think you can I don’t think you want to you want to build your team from the portal out in my opinion I think it’s been a unique situation with that uh last covid year um with the fifth year player like like Sam and I think now moving forward it maybe it’s a piece or two that you want to add but I think for me personally I’d rather do it through recruiting and and building your foundation from within there and then maybe there’s some key pieces or some certain team needs that you can do through the portal if it’s the right situation so um so yeah don’t don’t love the portal personally but again it’s uh it’s an opportunity for the player sometimes to find a new home and it’s an opportunity for players to to maybe come in and contribute as well yeah I mean you look at the flip side of it too and building that Foundation from the ground I mean Nolan’s a great example of what he’s done at Omaha and how he stayed through this program but from your perspective what is it like you know seeing yourself grow at the same program year after year like do you feel that benefit as well um versus maybe you leaving two years in or three years in whatever it may be how have you seen yourself grow in that aspect yeah absolutely I mean I think when you come to a place like this and you see so much commitment on various levels from the city the fans the coaches just the people in general you want to have that same same commitment on your end so that’s kind of the attitude I’d have is there’s nothing I would change about Omaha in my time here so I would have absolutely no reason to leave yeah when you think back to your first year here would you think that you’d be a captain on the ice and accomplishing what you have so far no probably not I was figuring out what I was going to make for dinner in the dorms probably what were you making I probably wasn’t making anything I was going to CH Sam for you I I mean I’m sure it’s hard to come in as a guy that’s know you got one more year of college left you have so much experience but you don’t want to step on the toes of the leadership that’s already been here right but you have to insert yourself into this team how did you juggle that of trying to join this team with Grace but also wanting to be a leader in yourself yeah that was definitely one of the kind of the challenging things coming in I think um was was wanting to be aware of that um but like I said the the group that we had and um the job that they did of making us feel like we were at home right away I don’t think it took too much time um where we’re I don’t know a couple months into the season now obviously we have a lot of new pieces but it it feels like this team is is just really it’s not really new guys and and returners anymore um it’s we’re just starting to become a team yeah what have you liked most about this year and its personality of of your guys yeah I think uh I think we do a good job of just kind of respecting individual differences where every all our all our people are a little unique and I I like that fact and and we all don’t have to be you know best friends but I think if we all respect each other and get along and then I think that kind of helps build that team and to Sam’s Point I think we’re you know we get to be this team one time through this year and I think it’s really been fun to watch the guys grow and and learn about each other and support each other there and and I I really like the commitment level from the guys I mean we get after it and practice and work really hard and as krenzen mentioned I don’t think it’s a surprise to see our growth here throughout the season there and that’s a credit to the players taking responsibility to to get better so it’s been a really fun group and yeah and good guys like you said I think at the end of the day we have really good trustworthy players that are just good people is there a game you could point to on the schedule that you’re like okay here was a turning point or here was a growth point for this team man they there’s a lot of them so far they they they come quick at me but maybe let’s flip over to the players just see see what they have to say uh what do you think kenzy anything that certain games that you thought was a really good Turning Point um I think I mean being in ASU with a lot of bodies down and getting a game out of that was probably something and then obviously the the Miami weekend for us was kind of just it a we scored a lot it’s just we scored a lot and that’s always nice to see um guys get rewarded for their efforts which maybe they weren’t um they weren’t getting reward for that earlier in the season so I’d say probably that point I’d have to agree there I think those two weeks were were really big for us um getting the we’ve been in a lot of close games and early on in the year we were on the wrong end of them so um being able to pull out a a win in a close game at Arizona and then turn that into a big goal scoring weekend the next weekend where we kind of just saw the floodgates open for the first time overtime win against St Cloud State no one brought that one up yeah I mean again number nine team in the country to to get a big win but again I think that’s just kind of like I actually felt that wasn’t unexpected a little bit not to sound confident or cocky At All by any means but I think just like I kind of was going into that game expecting to to get at least one out of the weekend for sure and I think that’s just a testimony to how that confidence builds when you do the right things consistently I want to dig into the personal journeys of you guys a little bit more we’ll start with you Sam so Wisconsin native you become a bad after those four years and then you head over to Omaha but going back to your childhood and your love of hockey where did you find that and growing up in Wisconsin uh probably just the stereotypical Wisconsin Minnesota way I think um I was on boots as soon as I could walk on the ice and then skates as soon as I was able to there so um Mo most of my early years were just kind of the classic backyard rank going to the frozen pond nearby um and just spending time like with my brother and my dad and um just really getting the basics what about you know yeah I’d say it’s a pretty much the same thing um there’s not I don’t know what else you do in northern Minnesota during the winter if you’re not skating you’re from Twig Minnesota where is Twig Minnesota it’s outside of it’s just outside of duth the only thing there is a outdoor hockey rink pretty much so but it’s no it’s pretty much the same thing it’s kind of a way of life up there and that’s just how the culture is with so many high school hockey in Minnesota and the amount of Youth teams it’s just once you get into it you get into it young and it just kind of becomes becomes part of you so high school hockey Minnesota is like high school football in Texas yeah definely what you say yeah absolutely so what was it like coming to Omaha because you also played with the Lancers too so you’ve kind of seen it from multiple levels do you feel like that’s been like the growth of hockey you’ve seen through Omaha and in that passion too absolutely yeah I um I mean I’d say just at the University specifically the growth since my freshman year to now has been awesome and then just working with younger players outside um like many of our players do on the team outside of uh outside of the ring with coaching with helping them out it’s youve see the growth year to year and the amount of players that want to get better and it’s I mean coming I was in their shoes once and it’s cool to see I mean gabs you’ve seen it as a player so you’ve really gotten to understand that buildup of the hockey program but what do you think’s been at the core to allow it to thrive and be so successful in the city well I think some good people in place I think you know we we got to honor Mike Kemp with Coach Kemp there with the ice this year obviously he’s the kind of building Builder I would say consider him a builder of the program there to get it started and get in the right direction I think he is one of the great guys at being out in the community and knows a ton of people and and really really got it established just with that Community First mindset there so a ton of credit to coach camp and what he’s built uh and now it’s our job just to keep that momentum going yeah what is it like playing in backer arena for you guys I mean Sam you’ve got big 10 experience but I mean noan you’ve played in plenty of Arenas throughout your career too so you know the difference of crowds and atmospheres How would would you guys rate where back to arena is it’s at the top I’d say um I mean you there’s been multiple times this year where maybe the start of a period or um just in the middle of a game after a goal where you take a look around and you’re like this is this is pretty sweet um and and you can’t beat it so um it’s it’s up there I’d say it’s consistent too I think that’s with other teams is what I’ve seen throughout the season is you might get a game here where there’s the fans aren’t coming or it’s I don’t know it’s not the weekend for them but I think with om it’s feels like every home game that the place is packed Sam were you confused when a fish was thrown onto the ice for the first time you’re like what’s going on I had some knowledge going in yeah um so you were aware yeah I was it still probably caught me off guard a little bit maybe it wasn’t on my mind at the moment so um yeah that’s the fun part of it it’s like oh there goes a fish yeah here comes little zon one of the great Omaha Traditions any other Omaha Traditions that you guys love and both of you Nolan and gavs probably know the most hockey Traditions man you know we didn’t sing with the crowd when I when I was here as a player and uh so I think that’s kind of neat I think the guys enjoy uh you know seeing with the crowd after a game I think that’s kind of neat and I think they do a really good job just you know signing autographs for kids and interacting with uh with the with the future uh you know future stars of the game and and just the fans that spend a lot of time helping out there so I always I always enjoy seeing our guys interact with the fans yeah I was going to have the same answer I don’t think that I haven’t heard of any of other friends I have on other college teams that’s they don’t do anything like that so it’s really cool yeah I think the bond between Omaha and its teams especially at with the Mavericks I mean it’s just Inseparable truly like the fandom is is there and it’s continuing to grow let’s get to the most fun part of the show and that is the trivia I know you guys are kind of scared because I told you it’s about Nebraska both aren’t from Nebraska but I did that purposely so you’re welcome let’s hit the music let’s play some trivia okay okay so I also asked these you can ask Brady risk and Harrison Isreal they were ask some of these questions too they had no clue but I didn’t give them multiple choice so we’ll do we’ll do you a favor let’s grab these do you want to play gabs or is that unfair cuz you you’ve kind of lived in Nebraska for a while maybe just pretend like I’m smart and just not that’s all right so you two will go against each other first question what is Dorothy Lynch is it a a beef jerky brand B a furniture store or c a salad dressing oh I’ll just go number or letter okay flip them see okay so you guys are aware of the Dorothy Lynch yep it’s good it’s good what color smart guys over here couple orange did you know it was orange no he would have gotten the tiebreaker there all right this next one I feel like it could be a regional thing but I know a lot of Nebraskans enjoy this what is Puppy Chow looking for for blank faces okay do you want me to give you multiple choice you’re writing something yeah I think we can I think we both got this okay tell me what Puppy Chow is give me the ingredients give me three ingredients you have no idea I don’t I don’t even have them on here I actually know them in my head I think okay check chocolate powder sugar M I think peanut butter is like an essential ingredient would you guys agree noan had that so I think I think peanut butter is going to get the point [Music] here there we go so we got two to one no one’s up okay which famous president was born in Nebraska was it a Kennedy B Roosevelt or C ford no’s up two to one no Gerald Ford his birthplace is like really close by too if you guys want to go check it out later did you know that one coach I actually knew that one okay you knew that one okay okay this I would be incredibly impressed if you knew and I don’t even know if you guys will know this this is a blast from the past which famous YouTuber is from Omaha is it a Mr Beast is it B Fred with the backwards r or is it C David do and anyone over 25 In This Crowd has to tell me who they are it’s Fred it’s B no one had a what are we are we tied tied oh my goodness okay how about Coach comes up with a tiebreaker cool that tiebreaker question all right um some Uno hockey history or something oh man um all right what uh let’s go with a coach here what position did Coach nobr play on the maps for the tiebreaker see just right half forward you got to pick you got to pick we got to pick where oh okay he was I thought it was a tri question had forward Sam had defense so it’s forward it’s forward forward okay there we go the captain wins ladies and gentlemen well guys thanks so much for the time and we will have women’s basketball up next okay thank you good work guys [Music] [Applause] [Music] all right welcome back to Mavericks All AC ACC women’s basketball up now Carrie Banks Cory Olsen jaw Harvey joining me guys how we doing good doing good pretty good pretty I mean I would hope so five game winning streak that’s got to feel pretty darn good yeah give it up yeah no for sure they’re playing really well and they’ve uh figured out how to win close games which I think is is a really positive thing that will need down the stretch I I hope that every game’s not close though in a positive way it does require a lot I don’t know of you guys but I feel like it my emotions are on a thousand so yeah yeah how’s it been from the players perspective it definitely gets nerve-wracking towards the end but I feel like our biggest takeaway just needs to be um when we have that big lead is just keeping it extended and not letting the team creep back in for sure yeah John for you I think it it matters to us the most when we’re on the court especially but even the bench like just staying on the same page even when like the emotions are super high I feel like we have moments where we’re able to dial in and kind of focus on the end goal and that’s getting a dub so absolutely yeah well five in a row that’ll do it to get a dub but when you think about playing a full 40 minutes which I know was one of your biggest points of emphasis from last year to carry over to this season of just making sure you play every quarter can’t have one down one right there can’t be a crooked number there but how have you seen that growth point from your team from day one to right now and how impressed are you with the the outcome so far yeah I think they have taken a lot of ownership of the direction of where this team is going and I think that’s the best thing about them like as a coach you can you know you can say the things you can put them in the situations but there comes a point where it’s like they have to take ownership and embrace it and I think this group has been very coachable in that way has it always been easy absolutely not but I think they’re getting that and I think when you see the result you know once that’s great and then you see it twice and you just continue to build that confidence in not only yourself but in your group um I I just think they’ve really held on to that and built on that and allowed that to fuel them um with each game that we’ve had yeah cor I mean sophomore year for you and obviously you were part of the other end last year when those close losses didn’t go your way so what’s been the differenc meaker this season um definitely just the way that this team meshes together um the work that everyone puts in everyone shows up with a positive attitude every day which is something that we didn’t get a lot of last year and so just knowing that everything that we’re putting together is finally paying off and just kind of like looking further in the future how future or how special this team can be um it’s very promising so and jof for you coming in absolutely brand new perspective you transfering from Fresno State what did you see initially from this team to right now at this point um I think our team shows like genuine care for like self- progression but also like just for the majority of the team I feel like all of us want what’s best for one another even if we’re having like down days I feel like everyone wants the best for each other and I feel like that’s the outcome in these wins especially but every day we kind of focus on doing what’s best for the person that’s next to us I asked coach gabs this question but can you point to a game on the schedule where you saw that growth you’re like okay this team this team’s going somewhere um I think it started maybe at Wisconsin I would say uh we didn’t come up with a win um it was a game where I think we battled back from being down 14 and then it ended up being a two-point game and certainly in those last couple possessions had several opportunities to tie it or take the lead but it just felt different um and just the the connectedness of the group uh everybody just accepting like hey this is my role for today and really trying to just shine in that role um I think that was kind of the Turning Point uh for us I don’t know if you guys felt the same yeah I agree um whether you were on the court or on the bench like the energy was unmatched and like personally we had people on the bench come up to us and be like you guys are so fun to watch and kind of hearing that as an Omaha school is something super special so I definitely think the Wisconsin game um kind of hit a realization in everyone mhm so I agree Wisconsin I feel like um all of us kind of seen how good we could perform like if we were all you know as one like even the bench I feel like the bench gave us the most energy because when you’re like I said when you’re on the court you know it’s kind of easy to like focus on what’s going on but I feel like the the energy on the bench kind of motivated us a little bit farther and ever since I feel like our our bench energy has been top tier yeah what are they doing on the bench I can’t call it I can’t it’s a lot of just cheering clapping oh yeah for sure okay it’s getting this team going do you do you enjoy that having that next to you absolutely makes you think better yes no it’s great and we’ve had some moments in film where we’ve got to see those you know just see those playbacks of the bench’s reaction um and just really had some some good moments watching that and it’s just it’s genuine like they mentioned and and that’s a really special thing when you have people just supporting whatever f are out on the court yeah when you think X’s and O’s and statistically I mean I’m just looking at the stats from the summit League obviously haven’t really gotten into conference play yet but second best three field goal percentage and then third best at limiting other teams from three have the have those been two points of emphasis for this team this year yeah well I mean we’re always working on our shooting um that’s a big thing just throughout the summer all of that stuff but I think the defense for me personally was a big point of emphasis because I mean we were last in the country in filal percentage defense and so I mean obviously number one the only way you can go is up but knowing with all those close games like wow if we were just you know 10 steps higher you know what I mean when that would have when you’re talking about 68 points per game um and just possession basketball would that have made the difference and so I think that they are embracing what we’re trying to do obviously you know we are on them we I 247 having about just playing Omaha defense and I I think they’re really grasping it and and taking it personal and um you know we’re not scoring the ball as much as we did last year but I think the defense is making the difference for us yeah would have been both of your points of emphasis for the season on the court ahead like personally or as as a I guess both yeah personally and that as a unit I think um as a unit the the coaches kind of emphasized uh defense so I feel I feel like as a unit we kind of bought into what the coaches were trying to do so I feel like defensively we’re all starting to get it and it’s starting to click so I think uh defense for sure and then personally I just wanted to play my role and give the best in wherever the the coaches kind of positioned me so I think that was my ultimate focus was just doing that I would say definitely what she said as a whole is defense um especially being a part of a team who was last in that last year um just realized in now where defense can get us um it all kind of makes sense now and then individually definitely has just been adapting an outside shot and not just driving to the rim every time so I love it little step back mid-range okay when you hit conference play what do you want to be figured out most with this team like what are those checklist items you’re like hey I want these figured out before we hit conference I think for me and I don’t know that they understand this like I’m uh I I talked to them about just my expectation of them and how like we’re winning but I I’m always have an eye on like what’s next obviously the summit league is a a tough League um so all I want us to do is go out there and win win a championship you know what I mean I want that for this group um I know that’s a big picture item right but that’s that’s the goal that’s the focus I know to do that we’re going to have to play together um we’re going to have to have different people step up every single night we’re going to have to continue defensively to tighten up um I always think our best offense is our transition uh so we talk about a lot about that in film um but just really like fine-tuning the details in every single game because I just know that we’ve played some good teams but the summit league is a tough conference and we’re going to have to even play even better than what we’re playing now to be successful has championship been the day one mindset for this team um I I don’t know that it’s not something I talk about every single day we kind of set that goal and you know we come back to it now and then um we you know with these last five games created just an inseason Tournament of our own to try and make things really really small and have them focus on the five games starting with Utah State um and it just I I think that Focus for them was really good they were really excited after each game to you know go 1 and0 two and0 all the way up to 5 and0 so that’s been um really good but uh we take it game by game but just know that that’s that’s where we want to end at cor why do you think it would be this group to make it to that championship and bring the first one home just the work ethic that this group has um kind of like I said before everyone shows up and wants to work hard and then kind of to biggy piggy back off of what JW said like the genuine care everyone has like everyone is there for each other everyone wants to do this for each other it’s not two people want to do it it’s it’s not an individual thing it’s a whole group thing and I think that can get us pretty far and jof for you in transferring in how have you seen those goals from from day one and and want to execute that with the team because obviously you haven’t been there all four years with them but you seem to already have that motivation and that Pride with Omaha um I think like what coach Bank said I feel like just focusing on like smaller goals cuz I’m very goal oriented as a person so I think like treating each game or like a a few games at a time like championship games or putting us in those Arenas I feel like it allows us to focus on like being present but also knowing that the end goal is to prepare us for that Championship Summit League game so I feel like coming into it they have kind of establish that culture to buy into it was kind of easy for me to just you know adapt and establish myself is that nice to hear that it’s easy to buy into this that’s beautiful it’s it’s poetry it’s music to my ears so play this for recruit that you’re all these visits you don’t even say anything just let jaw talk really yeah there you go go what has it been like though putting all these pieces together and obviously trying to figure out another puzzle for another year um it has been um an AC of patience I think uh as a coach sometimes you want to go at the speed of light but you know we have 10 new players on our team and even though we have some older kids they’re still new to Omaha and the things we’re trying to do so just uh you know my staff has has to remind me you know remind myself that like hey they’re learning you know and so not to get so maybe frustrated early as we go through those ups and downs and we certainly had some of those um but it’s coming together and I I think that’s a good thing it just stuff like that takes time when you have 10 new players with different experiences and 10 new personalities and you know getting our returners to fit in with the new kids as well too um but again I think the underlying care concern that they have for each other has what has kind of gotten them over the hump all right well let’s talk personal Journeys for both of you cor will start with you being a Nebraska native I know you’ve been on the show before to talk about that but how have you seen that I guess growth of this community around basketball and especially now in your college days how you’ve seen that grow and just seeing that support from the community your former high school teammates and and just everyone involved it’s definitely grown a lot and I don’t know for me it’s just super special looking up in the stands and seeing a big cheering section and just knowing that they’re not only cheering for me but they’re cheering for everyone um but yeah it’s definitely been some serious growth I was talking about it with a former teammate of mine but just like what we’re used to playing in front of to what we play in front of now and to know that it’s only going to go up is pretty special yeah what were your initial I guess thoughts and reactions when when you were in this recruiting process and wanted to join coach banks in the Mavericks I don’t know you’re laughing are you laughing why are you laughing cuz I can only imagine uh what was going I’m interested to hear yeah what was going through your mind oh I don’t I the coaches had so much care from day one um they were always checking up and to me that was something that sparked my interest and um after like almost every game it was oh hey good game or like good luck tomorrow type of thing and so to me just having some like a coach that cares coming from other coaches who care that was something that like really was special to me and obviously just being in my home state um with all my friends and family being able to watch me and also getting to build an Omaha program too right we’ve seen Nebraska and Katon go on their NCAA tournament runs in their history but to build something that’s maybe never been done before with Omaha and hopefully getting to that goal of a championship and I feel like already just with how well we’ve been playing in the results we’ve gotten um I noticed a significant amount of more people at our game this past G home game we had so that was kind of cool to see so all right well I dug further into your bio and I I know like everyone submits these I think freshman year like before you even get on campus it’s always funny looking back at these so I just I’m curious about these things things on your on your bio uh enjoys cooking and baking yeah I like okay so this is true yeah Ally and I cook and bake in the door okay can you give us a little taste of what you’re cooking and baking um we make tacos a lot that’s a pretty common thing um brownies is a common one in the dorms cinnamon rolls um at home I used to bake like cupcakes muffins um in the dorms yeah can I ask a quick question how many times has coach Banks got any of these treats great question CU remember when we made the peanut butter protein balls I do not and they sat in the locker room fridge waiting for you and you’d never I never go down there no at Baxter allly and I texted you we were like we make we brought you your protein balls and you’re like oh perfect I’ll get them after the game and then we show up the next day and they’re still after the game I have a lot going on Expos Expos she’s looking at the stats that’s she’s not looking about your she’s not looking for your protein balls that b offered the other thing that stood out to me on your bio is something you can’t change you have three brothers yeah I do what is that like I don’t have any brothers so I’m curious honestly I don’t I’m happy with having no sisters okay I mean I have 14 of them that I see every single day good answer good answer but I I don’t know I’ve Loved growing up with Brothers um they’ve definitely shaped me into the person that I am today and having them be able to come to games is super special but yeah I love them they’re some of my best friends so but you were like lighting them up on the court I hope as a kid yeah okay good lots of games of horse that you won yes wrestling matches yeah okay they’d probably say otherwise they would say otherwise but yeah they’re not on the show so they don’t get to speak okay let’s move on to jaw okay so senior guard you transferred in from friendo Fresno State um amazing you’re also an active member of the Army National Guard since high school yeah please tell us more oh god um I’ve been here for almost seven years seven years uh actually last July um I kind of just joined just off of like wanting to do something different I tried basketball early but it did not work out uh right away so I actually went back to uh junior college in 2021 and kind of started my collegiate career a little later so I’ve been in ever since and I actually just transferred to the Nebraska National Guard so okay well that’s awesome thank you for doing that that’s great can we get a little round up like that is awesome appreciate that you’re student athlete and you’re doing that that’s that’s pretty cool that’s good stuff um okay so it’s Palomar College that’s where you were is that that’s how you say it uh you had a career high 43 points in one game oh my goodness what were you doing you upset well yeah a girl kind of like uh sat an illegal screen like in the first quarter and I kind of just blacked out and kept shooting wow I’m not messing with you yeah holy moly okay so you need to get some opponent to set an illegal say you should have taught us this earlier yeah but that that was kind of an exciting game for me because like I said I went back a little later so that was one of the games where I was like just feeling it feeling the groove of things getting back in shape so yeah kind of exposed so how long you away from the game of basketball like six years six years yeah and you just picked up a basketball again and started playing college yeah that’s crazy I know how did you do that I don’t know I have no idea and I did I I don’t know I just kind of moved back to California was like I’m going to go play basketball oh my gosh I was supposed to how get shape again I don’t know I I feel like I’m still trying I doubt you were ever out of shape I was she gets out of sh no no not at all I don’t think so but like if I started to try to run track again I would be nowhere I don’t think so I think it’s a very different type of yeah that’s that’s crazy well props to you too wow okay well I guess for this current Journey how did you get in touch with Omaha and Coach Banks um so last year at Fresno State um I kind of wasn’t happy with like my self- progression like on the court like I wanted more from my coaching staff so uh entering the portal um coach ansar on our coaching staff he kind of reached out and he was like more obsessed with my game than I ever was like he watched my Jo games and he was like Co saw 43o game is what he saw he was coaching men at the time and he would like recite like my stats and stuff like that I was like who is this guy and he um he kind of mentioned like the program that they were trying to you know build up and that he was new also on the coaching staff and coaching girls and he’s been obsessed with me and I was like oh my God and talking about that genuine I feel like um he exposed that to me a little bit early so um just in the the transfer process I felt like um within the coaching staff like when I came on my trip and I actually brought my brother as well he was like they really love you and I was like how do you know that like you never know anything about basketball but he mentioned it and like ever since it’s been genuiness and I feel like that’s what was lacking at my last school not saying that I didn’t have that relationship with my coaches just like in support of like progress off on and off the court I feel like their pretty understanding of me being in the military and me like coming back like later and like my um my goals as a as a college student uh a little bit older than usual and then like them being patient in that aspect I feel like this was the perfect place for me to be yeah coach Banks what do you remember about that process uh ansar was I mean he was very aggressive and he loves watching games of people and stuff like that um so he does a good job too connecting just you know what I mean me and kind of setting the stage for when I finally you know do talk um but I remember watching her Fresno State Games and I was just kind of like okay this kid plays 20 minutes a game and she averages seven points and I was like I think she’s going to play more minutes here and I can only imagine what she’s going to do in those more minutes I love that she played on both ends of the floor but I just saw her I don’t know it looked like at times I was like sometimes you look like you’re just running around and I’m like I think we can give you you know what I mean a more like just structured attack and I don’t even think you’ve seen the best of her yet is is the best part is I think you’re still kind of growing within our program and figuring out different ways you can be successful and not just scoring I think she’s a phenomenal passer as well too so that’s really helped us kind of you know share the basketball and all that stuff and then defensively I just think um she makes people scared you know and which is scared that’s a good thing so someone made you mad and you went off for 43 points yeah I’m scared yeah I I really don’t know what took over me something did yeah I was pissed off that’s amazing well you’ll have to produce a little 43o game for Coach Banks next maybe make it 44 beat that career high there you go let’s get to 50 let’s get to 50 there you go all right well should we play some trivia guys let’s do it yeah okay so do you guys want to be a team together and make okay yes please so you’re going to play so show debut how are you feeling I’m feeling good feeling in for the boss man so I’ll do my best I think you’ll do great appr Field’s great but Coach Brown you’re your second to none as well so we appreciate you being here that is high paced I really appreciate that Tony Osborne K suon also joining us guys off a 10-point win against Sacramento State how’s this team feeling right now um you know I think I think it was good for us to get a win especially after kind of being in a little a little slump we were in so going especially on the road too going to get a win was a big time for us yeah it was really important uh we dropped a few games in the beginning and we trying to get those games back so and Coach I mean how was it for you and obviously a season’s never linear right there’s going to be ups and downs so how do you take this and trying to find that momentum you know we got a really good group and we got we’re not young we got some older pieces but we got some pieces that haven’t played a lot of division one basketball um it’s lucky we have these two guys back that have been here for the Long Haul since we’ve gotten here and they’ve been great leaders and uh we’ve had some ups and downs already early in the year we’re still trying to find that right group of guys that that core group that we can kind of ride with and kind of go and finish out games but these guys are a main part of it is a great win at Zack state to go out there and do what we do and um it’s a really fun group to be around and watch these guys grow and we’re excited about what’s coming in the future yeah what is it like trying to put the puzzle pieces together year after year of new teams and you do see guys transfer out or in and have of course a new freshman class every year yeah I mean it’s different right the transfer portals change the game you’re getting new pieces every year it’s almost like mid- major to low major basketball it’s almost like a new Junior College you know that they’re coming in people recruiting out of our program but at the end of the day it’s for me and our coaching staff it’s about people and it’s about the guys that want to be here the guys that invest program when it’s all said and done we’ve got 13 guys on scholarship a couple guys that are walking on and these guys want to be here and they’re fun to coach they’re fun to be around they take coaching we’ve got great leadership the fact that we get a coach these young men every day that show up and work and we we’ve got also really talented group as well but putting all that together and these guys trust in each other and it’s us as coaches like to to build confidence in them give them consistency and watch them grow and I think that we have the talent at this level to uh compete for a Sumer League Championship yeah and I’ve talked to coach Crutchfield about this before but the mid majors are in a tough position with the transfer portal right because you’re almost building these guys up and seeing them leave I mean we saw with Frankie Fiddler and I know you guys wish him nothing but the best at Michigan State but how do you approach that as a mid major program of saying like hey look how we can develop you to get you maybe to that power four five level it’s all based on you know the player and where they’re at you know like if you’re recruiting a young high school kid maybe that’s the sales pitch they come here we’ll get you where you need to go if you come and have a ton of success maybe that next level is for you if you’re recruiting a uh maybe a transfer in their own right you know are you getting the right character kid that wants to come in here and really be a part of something his last one or two years left or you looking for someone that wants to come in here be selfish for one year and then jump again the following year so really doing your research on what you’re recruiting and the type of guys you’re bringing in and we ask these guys all the time these guys are when we bring kids in on official visits they host them my first call the next morning is usually to the guys that were hosting them does this kid fit do you like did you like him it’s not just a one-way street it’s not just a talent Street where you’re just looking at a kid going he’s super talented you guys will like him it’s how it’s going to be you know coach crutch is like he wants their input on what they’re going to be and if there’s been times we ask these guys like Coach man I don’t know man he’s that’s a strange cat you know so and we and we really value that because we want to build a team and and the first thing crutch told me when he hired me as his coach like we want character and that’s going to be the the first and foremost thing that we want on this team you’re going to win with character guys that work hard guys that want to be here besides Tony we have that no wait that I sorry no but that but we have really High character guys that want to be around here and it it it makes our job a lot easier that we can sleep on Friday and Saturday night that they’re doing what’s right they want to win they show up every day they work hard and it’s just a like I’ll probably my vocabulary is not great so I’ll just keep saying you’re just a fun group to coach over and over again Tony what’s it been like for you I mean your main stay of this program and have chosen Omaha year after year I mean I’m sure you’ve also had opportunities like everyone to look in that transfer portal too yeah I mean that it to really describe it it is a family you know I want to be here you know Marquel is one of my best friends obviously I was really grateful he came back and that we get to have another go round at it but it’s just I I love everybody in our program and I really do value being a part of something and trying to be the first to do something go to the NCA tournament and you know I I look up in the crowd and I see a lot of my family at every single home game and you know people recognize me in the streets you know talking to people and they value what we’re doing too so I think that’s a really big part of it Mark how why come back for another year with Omaha uh well it’s a family here uh you know we build something here me Tony JJ uh the coaches trust me I trust them and from my last year I wanted to wear on Mya across my chest you know wear that with pride so yeah how happy does that make you just here in the these guys and and their pride for Oma and wanting to go to the first NCAA tournament it’s huge cuz both these guys had opportunities and uh there’s no doubt in my mind that both will probably be approached by outside sources and kind of get some feelers put out that um you know hey what if you know the option was made but it’s about relationships and these guys I mean you might think I’m just saying that because I’m on stage and they’re up here with me that about I could I could go on for days about both these guys their character what they stand for I mean Marquel Sutton is like salt of the earth he is like the person you want your daughter to be with like he’s he’s big time person like don’t think about that I’m just telling you but but what I’m saying is like he he’s the type of he’s the best of both worlds and like when I when I go on like he’s got zero back down he’s a junkyard dog he’s tough on the court he’s physical he’s he’s he’s just he’s a pitbull out there but then off the court he’s coachable he’s got a heart he cares about people he cares about his team you don’t find that that rare breed in a lot of people and when they are usually they’re one or the other they’re pitb on the court and they’re jerks off the court or vice versa and he’s he’s a rare combination and Tony’s just exact Tony’s got a he’s by the way he’s looking for an nil deal for a beard shaving kit if anyone’s got one or you know dollar sh yeah Dollar Shave club’s he’s looking for that type but Tony just wants to be here he’s a leader he pours into his teammates he he’s a very vocal person and uh we wouldn’t be building or going where we’re going to go without these two guys yeah what what has it been like building this team and building this culture you know I I think our first year was kind of hard to see you know we kind of just you know all those games we lost very close you know we it was struggle to see and then kind of that spring it it kind of started to make sense when everybody came back and you know we brought our five dudes that started a bunch of games that year back and then we started to put together and win some of those close games and that that Bond and maturity that we had built started to make sense a little bit and that’s why we came back again to uh finally you know see it shine and you know I I do believe that it’s going to happen here shortly but you know it takes time not not everybody can go into a program turn it right around right away to try to do it the right way and I think we are trying to do it the right way so it’s going to work eventually yeah what have you seen Marquel just from the culture standpoint since you got here to right now like you said it it’s hard to see uh the bigger picture the bigger picture starting the show uh we brought a lot of guys back we got experience with uh we got four seniors five Juniors bringing back JJ Jan they’ve been here since the start so having is really great uh how do you look at the eras that these teams will go through of course you have the transfer portal you have guys coming in and now but how do you keep that Core Group the same those standards the same when new pieces do come in it starts with recruiting right you and finding those those key pieces that the guys that you want to kind of your building blocks if you will um for your program like I’m not saying that we looked at Tony out High School like we get this guy in one year he’s going to be a high major dude right here we looked at him like Hey this guy is a culture guy he’s a summit league basketball player he’s very skilled um he’s a leader he cares about winning he’s going to impact guy Marquel this guy he was a junior college kid that was wasn’t really recruited out of high school went and blew up his freshman year of Junior College at Connor State and um had several different offers to go out of Conor State and chose to come here to Omaha and if you do your background research and and you really invest in the type of character kids you invest in and and and do your research that eventually you’ll find out that yeah if someone comes and offer these guys 300 $400,000 I bet they’re probably both going to jump but at the same time if it’s if it’s somewhat close and and and you’re in the ballpark that motor times if you build a relationship with a young man and they trust where you’re going they trust your vision that they’re going to stick around for the process and and you also got to put good character teammates around them right there the guys that they enjoy but guys that want to show up the practice every day guys that want to work and be around and see a vision of winning a championship and changing the the culture of Omaha basketball where it starts do you feel like recruiting is sort of a lost art in college basketball right now I think a lot of people are making that excuse I don’t think that is especially for us I think at the high major level it’s a lot of dollars and cents I think a lot you walk into a living room what did so and so offered this is what we’re offering this is where we’re at so it’s very cut and dry not relationship based for us we have to go out there as a staff and we have to do a really good job evaluating finding guys that have talent that are a little bit under the radar and then finding guys that want to be here that check some boxes and then have the work ethic to come in here and work on a day in day out basis we go out in our gym all the time these guys are constantly shooting they’re constantly in gym I I I walk by custodians all the time like and your boys were in here again last night coach they were getting after like it’s like so that I mean we try to build that but that comes from the type of character these guys want to be good basketball players they want to succeed and at the end of the day they will on the court this season where do you want this team fine-tuned at before conference play you know I think we’re getting closer to that now I think sack state was a very good thing we kind of shortened up the roster a little bit guys have kind of had some more defined roles crutch had some tough conversations with maybe a couple guys on the team but kind of more pinpointing this is what we want from you this is what we’re trying to you know accomplish from your position or what you can bring to this program and those are tough conversations to have because you know it’s like everyone wants to do everything everyone wants to score points everyone wants and there’s not enough shots to go around you Havey guys guess what Mark hell’s pretty good he’s going to shoot a lot of times and so if you’re taking shots this taking shots away from him so identifying roles getting those guys in the right position and then you know hopefully as we going staying healthy and then going in the conference play with a couple wins and a little bit of hey we can do this we’ve been here before these guys both last year won two games in the summer league tournament so there’s some stuff to build on in that situation marel for you what are the B biggest building blocks for you personally and also for this team uh just staying confident um I feel like if I stay confident and uh I come out hard playing then the rest of the team is going to follow suit so I feel like I got to lead by example vocally and with my actions so yeah I would say for me just kind of remaining confident as well you know at the beginning of the year was kind of hard to adjust to having a bigger role kind of being you know the robin to his Batman a little bit and last year you know it was you know fourth or fifth option a little bit so kind of adjusting to that and I think the last four or five games I have but you know I think the biggest thing is I just want to win basketball games you know it doesn’t matter if I have zero or 20 if you know we win I’m I’m going to be happy he’s going to be happy regardless of the what we do as long as the outcome is what we want it’s the best thing to hear as a coach right I mean it just makes you so dang EXC I was talking to coach of sax the other day after we played and I was talking about one of their players and I said hey uh why didn’t number three play as much and he was like oh coach I got a laundry list man that guy blah blah blah kind of went on nothing to do with basketball was all off the court stuff selfish you know whatever and I go man um he goes what about like your guys is number 10 and you’re 32 too like those are those are some dudes how how are they to coach I’m like and they’re easy to coach you can ride you can get on them you can coach them if they know you care about him uh then you can coach them any want like today we’re in practice and Marquel doesn’t Sprint back on defense I stopped the whole practice and I I and I you know hey you can make a mistake on one end but you can’t make two and he’s yes sir I know I I gotta be better and it’s not like man coach get off me know I this is I’m better than this you know I’m the he knows he’s a leader he knows his role he takes coaching you can get on him because then he can jump on his teammate and say hey if he’s going to coach me this hard then I’m going to get on you when when you’re not doing your job and it all trickles downhill and it starts with leadership and these guys have done a tremendous job being leaders for this team yeah what’s it been like for both of you being leaders on this team and seeing yourself grow in that aspect I would say that it it wasn’t that hard to adjust to because we’ve kind of you know when we came in there wasn’t many options you know it was either somebody’s going to lead her we’re just we’re just going to drown you know so we had to a little bit then and then we had to quite AIT last year and now it really is he’s kind of the The Leader by like showing it and I’m more the vocal leader and you know it compliments each other well but you know we want the guys to have success that are behind us we want to leave behind a legacy a little bit and that’s kind of the best way to do it is by Leading and showing what to do all right well let’s go into these guys’ personal Journeys a little bit more I always love hearing um where you guys found your love for basketball Tony let’s start with you I know you’re from Fairfax Missouri we’ve talked on the show previously about the small town it is but um when did you first pick up a basketball when did you fall in love with the sport um my dad put a Mini Hoop in my room when I was three years old so that that’s kind of the really the first time obviously don’t remember much but I would be in there every day you know I kind of remember being eight or nine and you know being in there by myself working on it and watching old basketball highlights like Allan Iverson my dad kind of I think you know he wanted me to be a basketball player obviously so he kind of showed me some stuff and that that’s really where it started and it just kind of continued on as you know I didn’t see anybody do it being from a small town so I was like I want to be the first to do it obviously and it just took a lot of time and effort but you know here we are I mean how many D1 players come out of Fairfax Missouri a year none none good for you that’s awesome you feel that support from the community too yep and uh ever since then there’s been a couple of division one athletes not basketball but they’ve had a couple girls go run track at Missouri State and Oklahoma State so since then you know obviously it’s not all me but I’d like to feel like a little bit of an inspiration but you know it stuff’s growing there so that’s good to see and a bunch of good cattle yeah yeah always yeah he’s cow tipping is we talked about cow tipping last time cuz you guys do that right in your free time no but I can say yes if you want Markel for you when did you first pick up a basketball where did you find that love uh fifth grade uh I was a football player at first I didn’t want to play basketball but uh I was taller than everybody in fifth grade and I went out there one day and I I was just taller than everybody so it was easy for me and I just took off from there and I I love the game from there so yeah who have been some of your biggest influences whether that’s family or maybe a player that you’ve watched uh Westbrook when he was on a thunder I’m from Oklahoma and uh I watched the uh Thunder a lot when I was younger and seeing him play and how he get up down the court and how he take every game like this his last just watching that that gave me motivation yeah coach mentioned it but you didn’t really have many offers out of high school that kind of put a chip on your shoulder to want to prove something throughout that Jo time and then of course move it up to D1 uh yeah of course uh I always wanted to be uh a division one player you know I didn’t have many offers uh coming out of high school I was overlooked and um luckily I got a Jo offer from a a good Jo school so uh I took that route yeah what was that like building yourself and trying to find yourself as a player at the Juka level in that huge town you were in yeah where is Conor state by the way Warner Oklahoma okay there’s not much there is there yeah n the McDonald’s in the subway it’s all you need what was it like that Jo experience before you ended up with Omaha uh it was good uh first year on my own uh coming out of high school uh I had a pretty good uh freshman year we made it to the uh Jo March Madness you could say uh we lost first round so it was good playing there in front of a lot of people we played the home team um so yeah when did you first see him play we actually got word um from a guy that we know down in Oklahoma that we’ve known for a long time named Rod Thompson he was was out there working out with some of the guys in the uh I don’t know if it was the summer before or after in the spring but he called crutch I was like hey there’s a Dude down here is a I use the word killer right he said he he’s he’s getting under recruited he’s he’s really really good and so as we started diving into the character person he is and the type of the type of kid he is like it quickly became a no-brainer a guy that with his size that can run his athleticism his skill set um and and his his his want to win in it was uh we turned the page quickly and offered him and moved quickly and he kind of slow played us a little bit he he wasn’t ready to jump in just yet but at the end of the day he finally called crutch back up and say you know I want to be at H mod and it was a really good thing for definitely for us what sold you uh they made me feel like family uh they uh I came here they had welcome arms uh literally come from the uh airport I didn’t know who he was he scared me at first hey you see the big bear I’m bringing in for the real thing we’re going to this out talking to me there’s this guy running up to you hugging you at the airport you’re like he was like Hey like marqu I was like you talking to me I like turn around and stuff uh but yeah uh it feel like film me from the start on my visit uh you know so I loved it from there yeah it was an no-brainer okay so Tony you had a 62-point game yep in high school what in the world happened there um re really I’ll be honest I watched the highlights last night I was on replay what is this I I was bored in my room I didn’t have any homework and I got on huddle and watched the game was it on VHS yeah it felt like it but it was we we hosted the district title game and we were playing kids small town you know there’s not many athletes so we played with some of those kids from the other school when I was growing up and it kind of was like a full circle moment at the tip off and we won the tip and I hit one from the black line right off the rip you know I shoted it right away and made it and I think I had the first 21 I think I hit seven threes in the first first quarter so I think I had 41 at halftime and you know I was walking around strutting my stuff nodding talking talking to students h a little bit and then about the third quarter I got exhausted or I might have had 70 probably wasted a lot of energy talking and flaunting my celebrations and stuff but it was it you would think it was a blowout and by the end we were up about five in the fourth quarter and I was like okay it doesn’t doesn’t matter anymore let’s let’s win you know but that that was about the best way to go go out of Mountain City you know the last home game ended like that we ended with a district championship and I always tell anybody that talks about my high school experience I had the best teammates I could have had we played together since we were in third grade and they knew I was going to take all the shots and they had not a care in the world they they love the role they love the role they played they love rebound they love winning you know they saw they saw I put in the most work they they accepted it and probably nowhere else I could have played like that or done that so I I always give appreciation to them so is that what you saw in film when you were recruiting him no what I saw in Tony was completely different this is a fantastic story it is good uh I I met Tony at an elite camp and he walked in with a pair of shorts and a mcloven t-shirt on like the character mcloven on his t-shir I didn’t even know his name I called him mcloven for two days and he had the same haircut and beard he’s kind of got going on now very quiet you know he wasn’t talking that much Elite camp but he was was killing and he was shooting from Deep he was shooting off anyone talked to him right there he was going right back at him I saw one kid run his mouth and he came down hit about three straight threes and the last one was about one foot inside half court and he was giving the kid the business I was like I went over like man this mcloven dude is killing it I don’t even know his name and he looked at me goes I am mck Lovin so that’s the first time I saw him and that it wasn’t 62 points but it was pretty impressive why did you wear a mcloven shirt you know I so I I really didn’t have much interest or offers when I was a I think that was going into my senior year so I I my they called one of the assistants called me and invited me down there and you know I looking back now they just probably wanted my $50 but I I went I went down there and you know I I said I got to stand out somehow so I showed up wearing it and I played really well and then you know that was the first time I ever met him obviously I had followed him and dm’d him on Twitter and he had never answered and then you know then he he he took a liking and appreciation and that was at North Dakota State I’m a married man Tony that was he hasn’t looked through his DM he probably should have but that was at North Dakota State and then I had signed to Omaha and you know they obviously wasn’t to him I remember being at the dinner at or the breakfast at North Dakota State and him and my mom were both a little emotional she was emotional I was going to go so far away and I think he was emotional that wow we’re not getting this kid anymore but knew right then yeah I signed to Omaha and then probably a month later um you know he called me and he said you know we’re reuniting again and it was it was probably the best thing that could have happened obviously you know I ended up where I wanted and I ended up with the coaches I wanted I love it it’s meant to be yep we are mcloven yep you you better you should have wore that shirt tonight what you my daughter has that shirt so it’s a thing it’s a thing now it’s gone full circle okay all right well let’s play some trivia before we wrap this thing up oh please don’t let’s do it so this is Omaha Maverick trivia so they all have to do with Uno the university people that went to it including Coach Brown at some point but first one Arkansas that’s a great all right you can answer these because I don’t know if you know this maybe you do it depends how much how how much you’re into your stats I’m not into them very much and they’re not great okay I didn’t have 62 okay you didn’t have 62 point game so this is going to bring these averages down uh how many rebounds did Coach have did he average at oou so a 8.2 B 5.8 or C 6.3 and we’ll call it still tied up here I’m going be impressed if it’s eight me too is that be I’ll try I don’t know what number that s that’s an S okay well that’s supposed to be a five oh is that
