like where the heck did that come from right just in case you’re not on Twitter a lot like sometimes I try I try not to be anymore I try to like back off of social media a lot but I still see this stuff and last night uh yeah about that time last night there were a couple of tweets that were fired off by a little bit of a peripheral account not really somebody who is writing for ESPN or MLB Network or anything like that it’s a guy who has a Blog called MLB nerds his name is Jack zulle Heron and he works for a minor league team I don’t want to make it seem as though I am poo pooing the work that he does but this rumor is worded very strangely Steve he tweeted a couple of tweets he said several teams including the Nationals and Rays have shown interest in right-handed reliever Alexis Diaz sources tell MLB nerds the Reds have been shopping him around and are open to moving him he Then followed that up by saying in addition to Diaz Cincinnati Reds infield or outfield Spencer steer has been made available for trade with several teams reaching out with interest including at least one AL East team and one NL West team sources tell MLB nerds so let’s say SEC this for a little bit because on the surface everybody’s just like how on Earth could they trade these guys they’re trying to compete you can’t trade anybody you must trade nothing for something that’s how this works if you’re going to win a World Series you got to trade a broken seat for Aaron judge that’s what everybody does but you have to give up something to get something and while these rumors are weirdly worded while these tweets are weirdly worded I’m not mad about the content like the Reds should be listening to offer if if people are like here’s a good outfielder for you we would like Alexis Diaz in return Nick CW should not be hanging up the phone if uh if somebody’s saying we’ve got a you know budding Superstar ready for you Spencer steer interests us Nick craw should be listening to it and at least not leaving him on red maybe text him back something you know uh I IDK might b f chill but when it comes to all of this I don’t like the whole thing of they’re shopping them what that means when you’re shopping a player means you are actively trying to get rid of them that is not what they’re are doing nck crawl is just basically not putting a block on any of his players if if a team wants to talk about la Cruz now they better be coming with like I don’t know show Otani on the other end of it but if they want to talk about la del La Cruz there’s no reason for him to immediately hang up the phone if the offer stands and it’s and it’s good yeah the the the word shopping I think is what bothers me in this whole thing Jeff because I you know I’m trying to I’m trying to rep my head around could this be a thing because you know stranger things have happened where even if you’re on the peripheral you stumble into a thing you know way back in the Reds alert days I had the castiano signing the day before it happened I don’t know if you remember that or not but I mean I I happen to get it so stranger things have happened but I don’t believe they’re actively shopping Spencer steer um I I I agree with you I think they’re listening if someone’s calling up and being like hey what about this um I think they’re definitely paying attention to that I’m intrigued by Alexis Diaz in this deal and I know that probably makes you very sad because that’s your guy but if you believe that Graham Ashcraft is not a member of this Red’s rotation and he’s not you can look at it on paper right now and see that he is not you have to think he is gonna be in this Bullpen and you have to think him out of the bullpen his stuff plays as a back end of the bullpen kind of guy and if you’ve got an extra back end of the bullpen kind of guy laying around you have a piece you can trade to maybe fix this group of position players so it’s reasonable to me that the Reds might be shopping Alexis Diaz to see what they can get that they might be actively reaching out to see what they can get but I don’t think they’re doing that with Spencer steer no I’d be I’d be shocked if that is is what we’re talking about here and and look we’re giving you a little bit of a baseball English lesson here on today’s lockdown Reds podcast appreciate you all joining our Ted Talk here uh when it comes to shopping a player like that’s what they did with Jonathan India they’re like we got an extra dude we are looking to fill a hole but we actively like if India was still on this roster and and and you know Brady singer not withstanding let’s just pretend for a minute they didn’t make any trade whatsoever and Jonathan India was still on this roster they would still be trying to shop him because there isn’t a place for him Matt McLean’s the second baseman Jonathan India’s glove and arm don’t don’t really scream outfielder third baseman shortstop anything like that and first base he doesn’t hit well enough to be a first baseman so you put all of that together and he’s a man without a spot and so when you get a guy without a spot you want to make sure you trade that guy Spencer steer can play everywhere Spencer steer can hit anywhere in the lineup Spencer steer’s LED this team in rbi’s the last couple of years he is one of the most clutch hitters on the team Alexis Diaz like Grant fessel is talking talking about uh you know he had a rough year last year and and when it comes to relief pitching as much as I love Alexis Diaz I also ascribe to it’s not even really a theory anymore it’s a fact that relief pitching is a Fickle thing and if you can take a relief pitcher and turn them into a a just obvious need for your roster but you shun that then you’re a bad general manager so I I do not for one moment believe that this is untrue I just think it needs to be sem the semantics and the grammar and all of this stuff need to be a little bit focused in you know our buddy Audi Elmore over at 700 and uh ESPN 1530 is running a running a poll right now to that very point would you trade Spencer steer if you address the the need that the Reds have and it’s running at 80% at the time of this recording and 80% of X never agrees on anything so uh there you go yeah because the idea is make the team better we said coming into this offseason that Nick cwl was going to have to get creative because if you’re the ownership of the Cincinnati Reds you’re looking at a roster full of young cheap guys and what has ownership done with that in the past literally every year of my life when they have that they sit on that so if Nick CW can make it better I want him to do that so I don’t want there to be this idea that we are diametrically opposed to the idea of trading Spencer steer uh or what did I say wrong word no you said I’m sorry do I by the way do I sound as froggy to all you guys as I sound in my ears yeah I’m I’m fighting a thing I’d say tad it’s not like it’s not like a you said you said diametrically opposed and I launched right into Hamilton with diametrically opposed POS sorry couldn’t be helped but yeah we look if if the trade makes the team better that’s what we want we are we are a podcast that loves the Cincinnati Reds and why we love Reds players the idea of a fan favorite being untradeable is just that’s not a real thing like you need to make the team better you need to win ball games and we’ll be happy about that yeah because moves have to be made something has to be done and I think my biggest pet peeve Jeff my single biggest pet peeve when it comes to offseason talk when it comes to uh potential moves that the team can make in an offseason is the thing you kind of hit on earlier in this segment where a broken chair for Aaron judge that’s always the proposals right it’s they should trade you know the bloated corpse of so and so for shoh Otani well Alfredo Simon for Au Hane o Suarez does not happen very often you know I you need to ask yourself if your proposal is you’re wanting to trade a guy because you think he’s terrible and you don’t want him here anymore and you think he needs to be an upgrade what is it about that that makes you think that the Dodgers are gonna give you Freddy Freeman back in return you know it’s just it’s not gonna happen and I think that’s my biggest pet peeve because if you want to get something of value you got to give something of value whether you’re spending your Prospect Capital whether you’re sending some good from the major league roster at the end of the day you have to give to get in this league and that’s why these deals that’s why I’m saying like I I want to poooo this thing so much but at the same time man it could happen and and that’s the the the other part of this is just when it comes to improving a roster there’s so many ways that the Reds can go about this so what’s next what does nck crawl have up his sleep because he’s saying that there something that he’s working on he also tried to you know cool us off a little bit by saying that he’s not close to anything big right now but something Big’s coming I I don’t one moment believe that we are done this off season so we look at what is next next the best way to get into all of the action with whatever season it is in the sporting world is with FanDuel serious I mean with even with AB bound this guy’s available that guy’s available everybody’s available you know what else is available ail free agents free agents are available and the Reds still have a little bit of money to spend we have not heard them come out and say and I know that there are plenty of naysayers out there that are just like they’re lying through their teeth they’re not saying true things to us I don’t believe that for a minute I think there is money to spend I just don’t think there’s buus of dollars to spend so there’s a little bit of this that I believe the next move the Reds make they will sign a free agent outfielder I don’t think it’s going to be somebody we’ve talked about a lot though and it’s I I feel like there’s one of two players that the reds are going to sign next because who we wanted we have wanted a power hitting right-handed outfielder so here comes Alex ver Here Comes Alex Verdugo or Max Kepler both left-handed both not necessarily power hitters uh I think that we are probably looking at one of those two guys coming in here and you will immediately look up Alex fugo and say really that guy that guy who slugged 356 last year in 550 at bats that’s the guy they’re going to get the the guy who had an Ops plus of 94 and 550 at bats that’s who we’re gonna get I believe that they’re going to rely on some scouting reports on him because he has always been a guy that has been a Scouting Report darling whether or not Terry Frank cona can get the best out of him will be the thing the question that I have though is spot trk has him at about $15 million I’d rather them spend that on jerkson profar here’s here’s the thing they sent the CFO out to talk to people this off season who indicated there’s money to spend they’ve got some room and he’s got Finance in his title yeah Nick crawl has come out more than once and said he’s got some money to spend he’s got the flexibility to add a a a good players everybody said this thing I don’t think they’re lying about that I think the problem right now is number of years I think that is where the big hangup is everybody wants a certain number of years uh and I think that’s where the reds are having heartburn and they need to get over it um you know I have no sympathy for the Reds being scared to sign a player to a three four five six year deal when the Dodgers have have guaranteed themselves bankruptcy in seven years so I’m I’m I’m okay I know that the structure of baseball is going to change I know that the finances are going to change I don’t care Ellie’s window is now the winning window is now the time to make a push is now if there it’s simple it’s now or never and and I know that sounds alarmist doomsday IST whatever it’s now or never it’s time for the Reds oh almost said something bad it’s time for the Reds to get moving because if if they don’t take advantage of this now I don’t know what I don’t even know what to tell you and I know because I we we’ve said this before because this is something that Nick crawl has said he wants to con create sustainability and not windows but he also has to be realistic about the players on his team you need to build a team based on reality not based on what you want to happen it is very very unlike that the Reds will ever have another player that is anywhere close to la de la Cruz and I think that we’re going to continue to see him get better and get awesome this upcoming season he’s going to continue to do things that just shock us in a good way but they don’t have anybody like that and they haven’t had anybody like that in a long long time so for them to just be like well yeah we have X amount of years with LA Dela Cruz but we are not going to go all in because what we spend now is what we spend in the future and we don’t know what the future holds so we’re worried about what the present looks like based on how the future could unfold that is very silly and that’s not how a team should operate but that’s kind of what this feels like it it feels like they could be aggressive they could go get teoscar they could go get santand there but they’re holding back on something and I’m with you there like I don’t want to be right about Verdugo or Kepler they’re fine players all this other stuff that’s not who moves the needle for this a Verdugo or a keper is a guy you get when you go get somebody else as well if those are the signings those are the signings they better both be the signings yeah if no no if either or both even if you sign both of those guys those signings are designed to shut us up those signings are designed to Plate us a little bit those signings are designed so somebody can come out and talk to uh our buddy Gordon and be like look we did things like that’s what those moves are for those moves aren’t to make this team better those moves aren’t to maximize the window those moves aren’t to win baseball games the move to win a baseball game is a freaking right-handed power hitting outfielder and it’s been the move that needs to be made for the last three years if they don’t do that they’re not serious end of discussion and and just in case anybody is confused I am not advocating for this I am predicting this because this is what the Reds do what did jamer candelario mean to this team last off season the exact same thing we did something look we did something we signed a guy and and while I still think jamer candelario’s got a good chance to bounce back and he does have value to this team what would we have ra what rather seen the Reds do last year go sign a right-handed power hitting Outfield bat we have been pounding the table for this for over a year really like over two years at this point it feels like we’ve been asking for an outfielder two offse seasons ago we were on this for years it’s it’s been forever and and we constantly see them do other things and they say well because we did this it’s going to strengthen this in a peripheral way that you’re not expecting and guess what hasn’t happened that peripheral way that they were expecting that we weren’t expecting that didn’t happen so they’ve got to just go for it like do the thing that everybody expect you to do go get one of these big dudes because I’m telling you right now it’ll be outside of the city of Cincinnati if you go Sant Oscar Hernandez in like a day or so outside of the city of Cincinnati people are going to be going you know with them reds they’re for real Cubs better watch out because right now everybody’s talking about the Cubs because they went they got Kyle Tucker and they made a couple of other additions as well and everybody’s like looks like the Cubs are gonna take the central you go get teoscar cooking with gas man all right Jeff we’re about to my favorite part of the show uh the comment section I don’t know if you’ve been track it as we’ve been going but it is blowing up lots of folks with lots of questions and comments it’s going to be fun 30 minutes every day all right Jeff questions and comments people are talking let’s get into it we’re gonna start right here with this from Jinx Pete Alonzo is a free agent I’m not opposed if I I mean you can’t trade Spencer steer if you sign pet Alonzo because you got to keep him in the Outfield you have to be willing to roll with a fry and right-handed hitter platoon in one of the corners but what a big upgrade at first base um and it puts A’s your number I’m not opposed you you just I mean you know it’s the same money we’re talking about for an outfielder probably a little bit more and and again I think it’s years I he’s not gonna sign a one or twoyear deal it’s just it’s not it’s not gonna be uh but I’m I am not opposed to that no and I think the biggest obstacle with Alonzo is a very similar obstacle with t Oscar Hernandez it is widely reported there are multiple people that are saying teoscar really wants to go back to LA and I’m pretty sure Pete Alonzo really wants to stay in New York especially after them getting Juan sto so I think they’re just trying to get the money right and and I think Alonzo will stay with the Mets ultimately but I like the idea because that would definitely suffice uh the the cleanup hitter need that would slow everything down for CES he doesn’t have to be completely 1,000 % ready to go on opening day I mean he could be but this doesn’t force him to be and then you could kind of work him in as a DH he also can play some Third Base as well so if no elv Marte doesn’t work out you could put CES at third base there’s there’s some possibilities that an Alonzo signing would open up it’s the same way and I I saw this comment way early on uh back before we actually began the show I always appreciate it by the way when folks like jump in before the show and are putting in questions and com I would love love that but uh the and and I I I wanted to scroll back up and give credit to the commenter about this and where was it I lost it anyway um back if it was in the beginning it’s way back there oh here it is jinx uh I I don’t know about the idea of trading CES that would be interesting but signing Christian Walker again would fit the bill of signing a Pete Alonzo in upgrading first base within kind of peripheral affect everything else I think if you do that if you bring in another infielder you have then basically got to make a public announcement to the world that Spencer steer’s officially a left fielder because I gotta believe that there’s an an element to his game that is affected as much as he says he loves moving around he’s a human being I don’t know too many baseball players that have gone through their entire career never having a home position I think if you tell him you’re our left fielder there’s something that kind of flips in his mind and and things kind of click in a little bit easier for him so I’m okay with that idea uh there’s a couple people kind of asking this question and I I’m kind of interested for your answer to it so Carrie’s asking it what would be your steer Diaz combo trade what team who would you go get also Mr ease in on the the same question who’s the best candidate for a steer Diaz trade I think this is a fun question in as much as it’s it’s the talk of the day and and it’s really because there’s not other news to talk about so Nick cwl can stop all this mess if he just goes and signs somebody but what would you what type of player what guy if if I’m if I tell you I’ll do it like this Jeff you’re trading steering Diaz in a deal and you’re throwing in cam Coler that that better be the best player on your team that you’re getting back like the guy that immediately jumps up there and it’s like oh it’s this guy or it’s Ellie uh it’s got to be somebody who fits in the middle of the order whether it’s three or four without a question there’s no hope like you you and I have talked about this all offseason this is a move where you that you do not explain it by using the word we hope that this happens we know that everything we know he’s a good Defender we know he’s a good hitter and quite frankly we know he’s got multiple years of Team control as well you’re not trading for somebody that’s got one year left on their deal so that really weeds out a lot of different people and I think it almost creates a question of you know is that trade out there because I think then you get into the stratosphere of the players that you would want to get back are on teams that are not looking to deal them and and so for me I almost wonder if that trade is is untradeable in and of itself because I don’t know that you can get the correct return back for them because that that trade right there to your point because we’ve we’ve gone back and forth in this all week couple of weeks now that trade is too much for Luis Robert I if that is what Chicago is asking for n crawled hang I would I would immediately ask to be traded to lock on Cubs if they made that deal for L yeah no Cubs that’s how bad that deal is I would go cover the freaking Cubs but yeah no that’s what I’m saying like that’s got to be like I Julio Rodriguez maybe like that’s when we’re starting to talk here and and Seattle’s looking at us like y’all are crazy start looking for a house in Mason trade all that for Lis Robert good high taxes gota watch let’s do a fun one thanks for somebody finally asking about it when are y’all gonna talk about VTO we see Jeff I told you we were gonna have to talk about this yeah yeah I think Joey vad is having fun and he’s trolling us I I really think that’s what all right for for those that may have not seen it Joey vad took to the IG that’s the Instagram for you folks my age you know Jeff that’s Instagram I don’t know if you ever are off Tik Tok enough to know that there are other platforms out there but Joey vad posts a picture on Instagram that says look at my new sleeves and it’s an entire closet full of red jerseys so every everybody is like what does it mean is Joey coming back well did you see what does it mean his followup he posted Maps different maps of Cincinnati and so that’s got a lot of people thinking he’s talk he’s got red jerseys he’s got maps of Cincinnati they did look like road maps so is this like a bus driver thing like is he getting ready to drive School Bus for CPS or something or I I think that Mr Joseph Daniel is doing his best to audition for like some sort of Thriller movie um he’s doing a really good job of like shrouding things in mystery uh I I think one of his best traits about his social media Persona is his ability to say a lot without saying anything at all and I think whenever something happens it’s going to surprise us because what would he do at this point with the Reds hitting coach has already been hired um the coaching staff is finalized so if anything he’s doing like an Eric Davis thing where he’s a roving instructor working within the organization which I would love that but that sounds like too small time and gig for him like he’s a guy that deserves a a placard title like a guy that’s got an office or a guy that’s got his own Jersey you know things like that I I don’t know that that’s available to him right now yeah he he did always want as zero way points out he always wants he’s always wanted to drive the yellow bus but I mean he’s also got post like let’s let’s also take this let’s not look at this in a vacuum and just look at these couple of posts let’s also compare this with what else he’s been doing this off seon he’s been skydiving he’s been to Italy this dude’s just doing everything he’s living his best life right now and and and is his best life as a bus driver he has always wanted to do that is his best life as a baseball coach is this best life in Cincinnati there’s lots of questions here that are that are going in without answers because that’s what Joey he loves doing that he loves I I think part of part of his
