1st telling me what was your favorite Orioles moment of 2024 and you will be entered to win the Hawaiian shirt but let’s get to the news and the notes on today’s episode and we start with another Orioles minor league signing they made a couple of those that I talked about on Monday there were a little bit bigger names that were brought in Matt Bowman was brought back Jordan Adams who has been in the big leagues before this one putting the minor more so in minor league deal that was Gerald oond a 24-year-old right-handed pitcher who the Orioles brought in on a minor league contract earlier this week 24-year-old righty 6’2 out of the Dominican Republic oond was initially signed by the Diamondbacks as an international amateur free agent out of the Dr at age 16 all the way back in 2016 he’s had good strikeout rates throughout his minor league career but also some high walk rates he made it all the way up to double a with Diamondbacks in 2023 but did not Advance further than that in the minor league system and I believe in July of 2023 the D backs ended up releasing him and he never really appeared on any Prospect list for the dback so he’s never a guy that was circled even though he did get to double a which is an accomplishment amongst itself when you start pro ball at 16 just to advance that high is pretty impressive so he was released by the Diamondbacks and in 2024 he was looking for a pro ball chance and he signed in the Atlantic League which is the top Independent League in the US and he pitched for two different teams both Charleston and Lexington in Indie ball in 2024 and threw 59 Innings to a 5.95 ra so yeah that’s not great but he had about 11 strikeouts per nine really good K rate also about five walks per nine that’s a really high walk rate basically he looked very similar to the pitcher we saw the last couple of years in the dback system before he was released now he is currently pitching in the Dominican winter league to keep things up and obviously try and get someone to notice him and get signed and apparently it worked with the Orioles because they offered him a minor league now he’s only pitched in a few games in lome down in the Dr I think just signed with one of the teams last week even though that League’s been going on for over a month at this point hard to find a lot on oond again because he was never really a known Prospect in the dback system but best I can find on Pitch mix is it’s foream fastball that’s used to sit 95 he’s actually upped his velocity he was more 96 97 in the Atlantic league and Topping out at 99 on the four seam fastball so first of all that’s something you like to see right High Velocity you can work with that that’s probably the the number one thing that caught the Orioles eye he’s got a slider that’s around 85 miles an hour and then he also throws a sinker to go along with his four seam fastball that’s something that’s getting more and more popular in the big leagues these days is guys who can throw multiple fast balls and this is oond already coming in with a four seamer and a sinker and and the Sinker is 96 as well so both pitches with good velocity and then a slider I’m sure the Orioles are going to try to help him develop a change up as well he’s been working mostly as a reliever a little bit as a starter but he comes in as a relief Prospect rather than a starter Prospect I would say for oando he’s most likely going to start the year in doublea Buie in the bullpen because again that’s the highest level he’s reached in the miners and he only pitched 11 innings in double A with the Dbacks before he was released in 2023 but I think the goal would be to get him to tripa norfol at some point in 2025 and then really have him Let it Loose as a reliever there and you know face former Big League hitters and some higher ranked Pro specs and really see what he can do unlike Matt Bowman and Jordan Adams who were signed to minor league deals earlier this week as well I talked about them on Monday’s episode who I expect Matt Bowman to help the Orioles in 2025 and there’s also a chance Jordan Adams gets to the big leagues in 2025 because he’s been a major leager before I doubt we would see Gerald oond in the major leagues this season this is more of one of those minor league stings that really provides that minor league depth and this is a guy who you’re yes signing to a one-year minor league deal but you’re not playing for him to get to the big leagues you’re planning for him to get to Triple A this year and then if it goes well you plan to resign him to a minor league deal for 2026 and at that point hopefully you’re starting to think about hey could he be a reliever for the Orioles uh kind of a year from now we’re starting to have that conversation so more of a long-term play here but another one of these interesting guys with the interesting characteristics interesting Winding Road out of Indie ball to get to the Oriol and I know some people get upset for some reason about Minor League signings but every single Le Team all 30 of them give out tons of minor league contracts every single offseason to fill out the depth in their minor leagues and take no I mean you can’t get lower risk than a minor league contract you give out these flyers to players and just see if any of them can pop most of them don’t pop some of them do maybe Gerald oond is one of those arms that comes in and pops on a minor league deal but next up we’ll talk about more of a a major league deal although not to a player the Orioles have I believe now finally officially rounded out all of their Major League staff because the one opening that was remaining was head athletic trainer and they filled that last week as well we’ll talk about who the replacement is for Brian eel coming up next but first this episode of the locked on Oriol podcast is brought to you by rocket money did rocket money helped you find any subscriptions you forgot about SL lockon one more time it’s rocket money.com lockon so we’re back here on Orioles news and notes episode and want to talk a bit about uh one of the final members of the Orioles Major League staff to be hired this offseason we know they made some changes on the coaching staff Freddy Gonzalez was out as Orioles bench coach you had both of the Orioles co-h hitting coaches leave and Matt Bor schy and Ryan Fuller they let go one of their Major League coaches and Jose Hernandez there were some changes being made to this orial staff and they replaced them Buck Brittain got promoted Robinson Torinos was hired as bench coach they promoted Cody Ashy they you know brought up Sherman Johnson they hired Tommy Joseph to fill out those hitting coaches roles and it felt like everything was settled but one of the ones that slipped under the radar I did talk about it when it happened but the Orioles also let go of Brian eel who had been their head athletic trainer since 2018 at the Major League level and had been working in the Orioles Organization for 40 years now I haven’t heard anything further there hasn’t been any further reporting about if Eva was fired if it was kind of mutual parting if he left on his own that really hasn’t come out and it it may not because although head athletic trainer is a super important job for a major league baseball team it’s not going to get the hype the reporting around it that you know a hitting coach leaving would get obviously with the way the Orioles struggled down the stretch in 2024 as well and and eel’s been around forever he worked in the minor leag forever he was an assistant athletic trainer on the major league staff forever under Richie Bells then when Bells retired eel took over the main gig in 2018 and you know had been in this role the entire time with Brandon Hyde and Mike Elias they kept him on but for whatever reason a change was made this offseason and eel is out and the Orioles had you know two or three of their assistants who looked like they could be good candidates to get promoted to the main job and all those assistants are staying in their role it looks like none of the other ones left the organization but the Orioles went outside to hire a new head athletic trainer and I do want to say that I know fans see this news and are like oh it’s because the Orioles got super injured in 2024 and yes they did they had a lot of injury issues that that really hurt this team down the stretch but it’s it’s really hard to pin that on a head athletic trainer a guy who’s been in your org for 40 years meant so much to this organization generally don’t go and fire your head athletic trainer because you’re getting more injuries than usual and especially when most of your injuries are pitching injuries which at this point in baseball are almost impossible to stop I mean you may have read the you know entire report that Major League Baseball put out a couple of weeks ago about you know couple of years of of talking to people and research about what’s happening with so many pitcher elbow and and arm injuries like it is an epidemic in the league it’s not it doesn’t boil down to one athletic trainer versus the other to have more elbow injuries it’s just kind of gonna happen no matter what you do it seems like at this point but either way the Orioles did make a change and Scott Behringer is the new head athletic trainer baringer had been with the Brewers for the past six years as their head athletic trainer so he’s been in the role before and for the first five of those six years he was the head athletic trainer for Corbin Burns in Milwaukee and a big thing for Corbin Burns is not that just he’s been really good in his career it’s how remarkably healthy he has stayed in his career so let’s throw an eyes emoji on that one someone that Corbin Burns knows well as being hired in Baltimore I do not think the Orioles hired a head athletic trainer just to get Corbin Burns back but it can’t hurt to have someone in that role who he knows very very well now baringer this is a job that doesn’t turn over a lot in Baltimore the Orioles have been around since 1954 in Baltimore this is only the fifth head athletic trainer they have ever had that’s right in 60 years is that good math 70 years Conor tries to do math 70 years of Orioles baseball they had had four athletic trainers that’s pretty insane and Brian eel from 2018 to 2024 by far the shortest tenure in that role now baringer becomes the fifth now you might be thinking okay baringer has that connection to Corbin Burns but what’s his connection to the Orioles well if you’re saying I wonder if he worked for the Astros uh yeah of course he worked for the Astros when mik elas and sigell were there baringer was the Astros assistant athletic trainer in 2017 and 2018 those were the final two years that Elias and Sig were in Houston before they were hired by the Orioles and after that baringer went and took the head job for the Brewers in 2019 he is of course a part of that 2017 World Series winning team no matter how you think they did it he did get a ring that year and he was part of the MLB training staff of the year that season as well he was also working for the Astros in 2016 he was their minor league medical coordinator in 2016 then was promoted to uh assistant Major League athletic trainer for 2017 and 2018 so he was hired while Mike and Sig were already in their positions I doubt those were the guys that hired bar back then but they were at least probably part of the process and saw all three of his years in Houston so you know they know him well and um a lot of these hires end up with these michelas connections and here is another one even even all the way to head athletic trainer it’s got some sort of Mike allias Connection in the past Behringer also worked with the Cubs and the Diamondbacks after he graduated college at East Stroudsburg University also did I believe grad school and worked in athletic training at East Carolina University as well so aot lot of experience for him obviously six years in the big league role with the Brewers the O’s go with a guy who’s uh been well regarded in this role to take over Brian eel and hopefully you know we’ll see it’s it’s obviously hard to make a big difference in a dent into pitcher injuries and injuries whatever it may be but maybe with recoveries with processes with whatever maybe the Orioles felt like they needed to make a change and hopefully Scott baringer coming in can help them make whatever change they were looking for heading into 2025 and Beyond but that’s all the direct Orioles news and notes I wanted to get to wanted to spread it out a little bit more coming up next because there were a lot more pitcher signings that happened over the past few days and they continue to impact the orol you don’t want to go anywhere because I really want to dive in on okay who were the best starting pitching free agents and and where do we sit now like who’s actually out there we keep saying Corbin Burns Corbin Burns Corbin Burns but beyond Burns who’s actually out there for the Orioles to sign at this point we’ll get to that to finish off the show coming up next but first this episode of the locked on Orioles podcast is also brought to you by FanDuel the NFL playoffs are almost here but it’s not other moves from around baseball in the last couple of days and how they’ve really impacted the Orioles now let’s start with just a former orial signing elsewhere not really a guy that I thought would come back to Baltimore but aloy JZ has found a new home signing a minor league deal with the Tampa Bay Rays with an invite to Big League spring training earlier this week and we know the aloy Jimenez story was traded from the white socks to the Orioles at the trade deadline it basically got him for fairly cheap they had a lot of right-handed hitters hurt they needed some guys to hit lefties aloy HZ had done that despite the injuries and the struggles recently and he came in and in August he was pretty good at doing that in September he really struggled he was optioned to Triple A for the final week of the season was not put on the postseason roster and he had a $6 million team option the orol were obviously going to decline that which they did making him a free agent and when they did that I talked about there’s an outside chance maybe that I basically said hey if nobody gives aloy Jimenez a major league deal I thought the Orioles might try to bring him back on a minor league deal and see if he can get healthy I am surprised that no like bad team gave him like a one-year $5 million Major League deal and just inserted him as like a platoon DH maybe see if he could build his value and then flip him at the deadline he must still really really be injured we know the issues like he’s he’s just so injured and slow at this point and he’s not even 30 that he can’t really play the Outfield so he’s just a DH and he’s had all the issues where he still hits the ball incredibly hard but he just continuously hits the ball on the ground and you got to hit the ball in the air to actually tap into that power the Orioles did a good job they raised his average launch angle in those two months they had him and if any team can raise it even more it’s going to be the raise now it’s a minor league deal so there’s no guarantee he even gets a big league spot but hey maybe the Rays can get him to finally lift the ball he would get $2 million plus two million more potentially in incentives if he does make the big league roster for the ray so it could be as much as a one-year $4 million deal if he really does stick in Tampa again I trust the Rays to try and fix something with him and and he seems like a great guy he was cool in that Orioles Clubhouse and I I certainly wish him well I I hope he doesn’t turn it on and bludge in the Orioles next year in the AL East but definitely wish him well in this deal with the Tampa Bay Rays then we move to the pitching side there really five pitchers that signed that I wanted to talk about all who I thought the Oriol might have some level of interest in Shawn manah is off the board he was the best left-handed starter who was left out there man resigning with the Mets for a three-year $75 million deal manah who lowered his arm angle midseason to kind of look more like Chris Sale from the left lower arm slot and just got a whole lot better down the stretch thought he would be a great fit for the Orioles and you know this three years 60 to 75 million was about where he was predicted to get Contract wise thought it’d be a great fit for the O’s because it wouldn’t take too too many years they could overpay him a bit early to get him they need a lefty in the rotation he was trending upwards they could continue to help him with his pitch mix but he had the qualifying offer attached to it and there’s been all this reporting around the Orioles being scared off from pitchers who have the qualifying offer attached because if you sign one of those guys you have to Forfeit a draft pick apparently the Orioles just don’t think that is worth it I’ve laid out my points on an Oriol earlier episode why I think that Viewpoint from the Orioles is stupid but here we are now maybe manah loved his time with the Mets and he just wanted to resign there and obviously Steve Cohen has all the money in the world and that’s a big part of this too and ultimately the Mets had seemed like really wanted him back and may have just paid more and more to get him he was initially number four on my free agent starting pitcher left-hander wish list he was up to number one because everybody ahead of him had been signed so really with manah down like any Lefty who could be an impact starter is gone free agent wise like manah was the last one and we’ll talk about that coming up next when I kind of show the list of lefties now speaking of lefties Patrick sandal is also off the board he signed a two-year $8.25 million deal with the Boston Red Sox now sandal an interesting case he had Tommy John last year the internal brace surgery and is going to be out for most if not all of the 2025 season that’s why he got a two-year deal the Red Sox hoping he comes back in August or September of this year and then can pitch a full 2026 season on this contract but the Angels non-tendered him and just made him a free agent he was only going to be due like maximum $6 million for next year in arbitration and he’s been a really good pitcher before he got injured at times not sure why the Angels just didn’t pay him six million to keep him around for a couple more years but they decided not to and obviously the Red Sox thought he was worth more like 18 million just another dumb deal by the Angels but it could have been an interesting pickup for the O’s to to be a long-term play but I also understand why Baltimore didn’t go get him and this is also why he wasn’t on my free agent wish list it’s because the O’s already have Kyle bradish and Tyler Wells on this similar timeline where they’re they’re coming back from Tommy John they’re trying to get back at some point late in 2025 so the Orioles more so need starters now who are going to be ready to fill those bradish and Wells Innings and obviously although sandavol has a high ceiling he wouldn’t be able to do that because he’d be on that same exact timeline so didn’t make as much sense for the Orioles to go after a guy like that but he is also off the board now speaking of the Red Sox they did make another signing Walker buer is off the board signing a one-year 21.05 million deal with the Boston Red Sox kind of an interesting deal because everyone was surprised that Dodgers didn’t offer the qualifying offer to Walker buer well he signed the exact amount of money of the qualifying offer which is 21.05 million just kind of a weird deal I don’t know what’s going on with Walker beer sometimes I thought he would take a multi-year deal with opt outs instead he just takes a one-year deal and says hey I’m G to rebuild my value because he had the Tommy John and all the setbacks basically hasn’t pitched for the last two years and when he did come back last year he was okay I mean he obviously closed out the World Series looked great there looked better in the postseason but it was it was shaky he needs to rebuild his value certainly and so he’ll to do that on a one-year pillow contract with the Red Sox that was another guy I really thought the orol would go after because again maybe he doesn’t fit perfectly because there’s still injury questions and performance questions but if the O’s don’t want to give out these long-term contracts to starting pitchers I was like Walker berer is going to look for a short-term with opt outs or even a one-year deal and the one-year 21 million is what he got feel like the O should have been all over that just say hey let’s see what you can do we’ll help you rebuild that value maybe we don’t resign you after this year but you can hit the market and will’ll make you better than you are now and they would have had rotation SP for him and instead it’s it’s going to be the Red Sox he was number three on my righty wish list and so a little surprising they didn’t bring him in but berer off the board as well and then a couple more kind of intriguing righties Joe Ross and Mike Soka are off the board Joe Ross a oneyear $4 million deal with the Phillies he was kind of converted to a reliever last year with the Brewers and looked really good in the bullpen after like three years of injuries I had him on my relief pitcher wish list but the Phillies may use him as kind of a Swingman thought he could be an interesting Swingman for the Orioles and then Mike Soka also a guy coming off of multiple years of injuries got moved to the bullpen with the white sock last year and was dominant in the bullpen I also had him pegged on my relief pitcher wish list because I thought he could be a really interesting pickup but he signed with the gats for a one-year $8 million deal and all indications are he signed to be a starting pitcher again and that’s what he’ll be for Washington so those two guys who had connected to the or a little bit are off the board as well so the question is who is left it is looking more and likely that if the Orioles are going to add another more impact starter which I think they need to do they need to add someone who’s going to be in the top three of their rotation it’s there’s not many free agents left like let’s look at it here this is the list and you’ll see it here if you’re watching on the lock on Orioles YouTube page if not I’ll kind of read out the names on here I did my right-handed starting pitcher wish list during the offseason and I did my top six on the board now when I did that top six I did not include Corbin Burns because I was like he’s the easy number one we all know it let’s move on and and talk about other guys and I also didn’t include Jack flare because I was like although he is a top six pitcher on the market in terms of right-handers I just didn’t think a reunion between him and the Orioles was in the cards but he’s still out there obviously Corbin Burns is still out there so this is my true from the beginning of the off season top 15 right-handed starting pitchers this is what it looked like and I’m showing it here on the lockdown Royals YouTube channel but from 1 to 15 it went Corbin Burns Nick pet Nathan avaldi Jack flare Walker bu Luis srino Tomy Yuki sugano Justin Verlander Max Sherer Shane Bieber Frankie montos Alex Cobb Charlie Morton Kyle Gibson Lance Lynn that is my top 15 we currently have seven of those 15 off the board number three nathany avaldi back to the Rangers I really wanted him number five Walker berer to the Red Sox number six Luis seito to the A’s now the Orioles have signed one of them number seven Tomy Yuki sugano to the Orioles number 10 Shane Bieber going back to the Guardians number 11 Frankie Montes to the Mets and number 12 Alex Cobb has signed with the Tigers so we’ve got number one and two number four number eight and n and number 13 14 and 15 on the list still remaining now if you’re looking for a guy who’s still going to be an impact potentially top of the rotation starter obviously Corbin Burns is the guy to go get and I still think I don’t think the orales are the favorites but I still think if he takes a shorter term deal takes some opt outs there’s still a chance like the longer he’s unsigned the better chances the Orioles have of bringing him back I think there’s still a chance Burns is back in Baltimore but beyond that you have Jack flare and Nick Peta who are like upside plays of potential top of the rotation guys jack flare pitched like a top of the rotation guy with the Tigers and the Dodgers last year but and and the reporting is the Orioles are open to a reunion they’ve said they know he was tired when they traded for him and he struggled in 2023 I just think with everything that went on there I’m not sure Jack flare is really going to be open to reunion with the Orioles I also think he’s going to be looking for a four or fiveyear deal and I’m not sure the O’s want to give that to flarity then you’ve got Peta who’s got all the stuff to be a top the rotation guy he’s never truly put it together I think he could and that’s why I have him this far up but others would have him way lower there’s a lot of risk with him as well and then the rest of the the list is just old guys like you have old guys who have been that are going to be Hall of Famers Justin Verlander and Max sherzer but they have a lot of injury concerns and they’re all at least 40 I believe at this point and then you have other old guys who have just been pretty good like Charlie Morton and then two other old guys who have been solid recently A Reunion with Kyle Gibson or potentially bring in Lance Lynn like that’s what you got left and really because the Verlander and shurz are injuries then because of just who Morton Gibson and Lynn are I’m not sure any of those five really help the Orioles at this point so the guys who are righties who could really be what they need in this rotation that are left are I think Birds Peta and flarity and again flarity I just don’t see him wanting the reunion PETA has downside with not really injury but more inconsistency and he also has the qualifying offer attached to him and again the reporting is the Orioles don’t want to sign those players so that leaves Corbin Burns and I still think the Orioles are going to get out bid for burns so I’m looking at this list of 15 right-handed pitchers the O have signed one six others are off the board and I just don’t see the Orioles signing the other seven I feel like the best chance of any of them to get is Corbin Burns because he’s the most worth it and at some point they got to spend on somebody I think it could be Burns but again chances aren’t likely that he’s back in Baltimore so that’s not great kind of looking at that list on what’s available free agent wise so then you turn to the lefties and you’re like okay the oros could definitely lose use a lefty in their rotation you could project a rotation right now if you’re giving the five spot to Albert Suarez over Kade Povich and say the oro’s rotation right now is five righties they could use a lefty well let’s look at the lefties left out there this again is showing here on the lockdown Orioles YouTube page if you’re watching but if not here are my top 10 lefties to begin the off season now I only did 10 lefties because there were just less lefties out there this year and in general there are less lefties number one is Blake Snell then Max freed us Kikuchi Shawn maniah Andrew Haney Matthew Boyd Kyle Hart Jose kintana Martin Perez and ogasawara which is one of the lefties who is potentially coming over from Japan this year that is one through 10 so who’s off the board well the top four are already gone Blake Snell really wanted him big deal with the Dodgers Max freed really wanted him big deal with the Yankees usay Kikuchi thought he could be great signed early with the angels Shawn manah thought he could be great just signed with the N with the Mets Andrew Haney is the best guy still out there he’s number five on my list then Matthew Boyd he signed with the Cubs then there’s Kyle Hart who used to be a top prospect he went to Korea and pitched really well over there Jose kintana is in his late 30s like there’s not a lot of stuff left but he did kind of Dink and dunk his way to a good year with the Mets kind of the same thing Martin Perez has done into his 30s he’s left doesn’t throw hard but kind of dinks and dunks you and then OAS ogasawara has good numbers in Japan but the stuff is like not very good it’s it’s a way worse profile than sug sugano I just have him on here because there’s really nobody Beyond him but I’m not super interested in him and again like Haney at this point is a back of the rotation guy Hart has questions kintana and Perez are number five starters I’m not even sure aasara is a major league starter at this point so you’re looking at the lefties and it’s like okay if the Oriol are looking for a top flight guy none of the five lefties left that are on this list really fit that mold I mean the closest you could get is if you re unlock what Andrew Haney was able to do with the Dodgers in 2022 and he was dominant for like half a season or if you think Kyle Hart is going to come back and be the Truly Real Deal like those are the only two that could fit that mold on this list so all of that is to say I don’t think it’s likely that the Orioles sign another starting pitcher that is what I’m going to say here I think they are still looking for a guy who’s going to fit in the top three of their rotation and I think it’s going to come via trade because the Dylan ceases and Lis castillos and the fber Valdes potentially and the whomever you may think are out there the Mitch Kell of the world are available via trade and I just again I still think there’s a chance for burns maybe they would pull the trigger on flarity maybe they just sign Haney and call it a weird offseason but you look at that free agent list and it’s just like nothing really fits the O’s anymore they they kind of missed the mark there they got sugano which was good I wanted him and they brought him in but they needed another starter and it seems like it it might have to be via trade maybe they’ll surprise us and burns will come back I think it’s still in the cards but a lot of the best fits really all the best fits have passed the Orioles by at this point in the off season but that’ll do it for today’s episode thank you so much for tuning in we’ll keep you updated on all of those starting pitchers that they continue to sign elsewhere and hopefully somebody in Baltimore as as well but we will be back tomorrow a little bit of a 2024 recap episode coming up tomorrow Paul manano who helps cover the Orioles over at the
