the Orioles already this winter have let two of their more important relievers walk in Jacob web and Danny kulum so will they have to do anything to kind of rebuild this Bullpen try to answer that question plus get to plenty of Orioles news and notes coming up on this episode of the locked on Orioles podcast you are locked on Orioles your daily Baltimore Orioles podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day hey there Orioles fans today is Tuesday November 26th 2024 and welcome back in the locked on Orioles podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day as always I’m your host Conor Nukem and coming up on today’s episode we’re going to run through some Orioles news and notes got a whole lot of topics to get to we’ll talk a bit about the Orioles projected bullpen with Jacob Webb and Danny kulum potentially not coming back next year how the O’s might add to that pan or what internal options could help them in 2025 we’ll talk about the Orioles at least reportedly signing infielder Franklin beretto the former top prospect to a minor league deal how he could help help the O’s and then finally a lot of news concerning some former Orioles Austin Hayes Austin Slater Dylan Tate and many more we’ll get updates on those at the end of the show but that’s all coming up on this episode of the locked on orial podcast which is brought to you by Game Time download the game time app create an account and use code locked on MLB for $20 off your first purchase so we’re going to start today’s episode with a look at the Oro Bullpen because as we talked about on yesterday’s episode if you haven’t listened or watched yet make sure to like comment and subscribe to the locked on Orioles YouTube channel make sure to subscribe wherever you listen leave a festar rating and a review whether it’s Spotify or apple podcast it all really helps out the show a lot thank you for your support thank you to the every dayers out there even through the offseason we are still five days a week until the end of the winter meetings now this week only four episodes this week because of Thanksgiving but next couple of weeks we’ll still be five as well get you all those Orioles rumors all the news hopefully some signings and some moves coming up as well but make sure you stick around but on yesterday’s episode I broke down the Orioles decision to non-tender Jacob Webb and make him a free agent I talked a bit about how it could have been injury related the fact he had didn’t have any options left and kind went along with the decision that the Orioles made a couple of weeks ago when they declined the $4 million team option on Danny kulum now when that happened we talked a lot about hey he had the elbow injury when he came back he just was not the same Orioles may have been worried about that and so two guys who you know neither of them were really ever the Orioles closer but two guys who were important middle relievers and setup men over the past two seasons for the Orioles are both free agents now neither of them is signed with a new team yet so there’s always the chance the O’s could bring either one of them or both of them back for 2025 at a lower price on a different type deal whatever it may be but it seems like with the or’s making the decision to not pay kulum 4 million and not pay web 1.7 million projected they’re probably going to end up with another team which means the O are going to have two holes in their Bullpen because if you projected out the 2025 Bullpen at the end of the season there’s a good amount of projections they’re going to have both web and kulum in there so the question is what does this Bullpen look like now and among guys who are on the 40-man roost because the Orioles they don’t have a lot of non4 man prospects who I feel like are are ready to jump in and help the bullpen and they haven’t really made a lot of minor league signings yet that are like yeah this guy’s GNA be a slam dunk absolutely going to be competing for a bullpen spot for opening day they’ve signed some pitchers but more projects will probably spend most of the year in tripa norfol and and try and find their way by the end of the season so there’s basically three categories right now for the Orioles Bullpen heading into next year they are the the guys who I think are locks for the bullpen unless they get injured that they will be on that opening day roster they’re the guys who are starting pitchers but could end up in the oral Bull Pen because maybe they work better there or you know they always just have too many starters but they still want to get a good arm in there and then there are the guys who are kind of the depth relievers on the 40 Man fighting for a spot but have a lot of work to do to gain a spot on the opening day roster so let’s start with I think right now with web and kolom gone there are six locks now let me know here in the the comments section on the locked on oro’s YouTube page please let me know if you think this list of six locks that I have that that that it’s incorrect that you think there should be more or less or the name should be different or whatever it may be but I feel like hey Felix Bautista is coming back you know the Orioles May let him ease in a little bit early in the season it sounds like but he’s going to be back in healthy so he’s a lock inor Canรณ is obviously a lock the Orioles picked up the option on seranthony Dominguez he’s gonna be another setup man and a lock Gregory stto Orioles tendered him a contract he was great the final month of the year he’s going to be a big part that Bullpen just with the You know despite the struggles at times with the roles that CNL Perez has had over the past three seasons you would have to think he’s a lock and then honestly I would argue that Keegan Aken did enough in 2024 that at least to start the season he is a lock for the oral Bullpen so that gives me six relievers and again you’re going to have a bullpen of eight because you’re allowed to carry 13 pitchers you have five starters that leaves you eight relief pitchers and right now I think you got six locks now guys always have injury ineffectiveness or things could be shuffled as this offseason goes along but right now that gives six and you could say hey if Webb and kulon were still here that’s seven and eight and the bullpen was kind of set but that is no longer the case so now we go to tier number two and those are the starters who could be pushed into the bullpen depending on performance and injury and what the roles look like for next year I’d say Kade poic is one of those guys Chase McDermot is one of those guys Trevor Rogers is one of those guys Albert Suarez and then Brandon young who was just added to the 40-man roster last week to be protected from the rule five draft draft could certainly be one of those guys as well and and it really depends on what the orial rotation will look like and what they do in free agency Mike Elias was on MLB Network radio over the weekend and continued to talk about how the Orioles are looking to add starting pitching they’re looking at the top of the pitching Market I think the Oriol should try to add two starting pitchers this offseason I really do and especially you think about it when you look at the state of the rotation right now I mean if tomorrow we’re opening day for the Orioles this would be their rotation Grayson Rodriguez Zack effin Dean Kramer Albert Suarez and Kade Povich that would be their rotation one through five that is not good enough to be a playoff caliber rotation they’re going to need one guy at the top and I think one guy in the middle or at the bottom of that rotation to round it out now the question is okay let’s let’s assume the Orioles do that right they they spend the money with David Rubenstein they they bring back Corbin Burns and they sign I don’t know they sign Andrew Haney they bring back Corbin Burns they sign Andrew hany who I talked about on my free agent left-handed starting pitcher wish list back on Friday’s episode make sure and check that one out so you add those two guys I think the most likely two to get pushed from that rotation would be Albert Suarez and Kade Povich it would kind of give you like a Burns Rodriguez effin Haney Kramer rotation going into the season and then you would have a lot of depth behind that you would have Povich you would have Suarez you would have Trevor Rogers you would have Chase McDermot and I think just because poic and and Suarez obviously out of all those guys gave the Orioles the the most amount of help both in the rotation and a little bit in the bullpen for Suarez in 2024 and I think for for poic he could certainly just start the year back in Triple A if the O’s really add to the rotation a lot they they’d rather Povich be a starter than a reliever he could be back in norfol to start the year that’s that’s not out of the question at all despite the fact that he did spend a good chunk at the end of the season as one of the Orioles five just because they needed him out there but for Bert Suarez you know he’s a guy who is under team control for a while he was obviously amazing last year but he’s out of options so you can’t just send him down to Triple A and I don’t think the Orioles just want to lose him on waiver because if they DFA him he is going to get claimed after what he gave to the O’s last season and Suarez had some success in the bullpen last year so I would think if the O’s do enough this offseason to push him out of the rotation you’d think they just move Suarez to the bullpen to kind of be the multi- ining long guy to begin the year and although Aken has done that in the past those six locks don’t include one of those guys so Suarez would be a perfect player to fit one of those spots so really okay you add two pitchers you move Suarez to the pen that leaves you one Bullpen spot now you could go with one of these other starters you could go with Kate Povich you could you know I think Chase McDermot could be a nasty reliever we only saw him pitch one big league game and then have the shoulder injury at the end of last year but he was healthy came back and and pitched once or twice in Triple A at the end of the year so he’s he’s good to go heading into Spring train it looks like I don’t think Brandon young for Trevor Rogers maybe but I feel like if he doesn’t make the opening day rotation they’re going to keep him in Triple A and continue to work on things and find something here but he’s a possibility but that is a lot of lefties I think really for that one spot you then if you just had this group you would roll into my third tier which is the depth relievers on the 40 Man kind of fighting for a roster spot and those are Brian Baker who’s been up and down the last couple of years he’s he’s still hanging on he’s definitely on the on the roster bubble this off season that includes Colin Selby who kind of burst onto the scene last year but didn’t really get to pitch a lot but the Orioles really really like his stuff and are going to bring him back next year that includes Luis Gonzalez and Cade stad both guys who spent the year in the tides Bullpen who were both added to the 40-man roster this off season so kind of intriguing guys and the fact that they were both added tells you that the Orioles see something in both of them and then there is Thaddius Ward who the Orioles claimed off of waivers from the Nationals this off season who is certain on the 40 man roster bubble but right now is a part of those 38 guys that hold spots on the 40-man roster so from that group I would I would choose Colin Selby that would be the first guy i’ go to because he just has by far the best stuff out of there but this whole conversation kind of brings me to this point I really think the O’s are going to try to add a reliever this offseason now Mike Elias has shown he’s been pretty good at working the minor league deals and the waiver wire to build a bullpen but at this point you have the money right it’s David Rubenstein taking over for John Angelos that changes the way you do things a lot of ways in free agency and in trades in the offseason but it can also say that you know sometimes paying for relievers in free agency can be a huge risk because relief pitchers are just they’re so volatile you never know what you’re going to get they’re it’s kind of the easiest position to find on waivers the oros have shown that at times but I just think that if they find the right reliever in free agency on a on a one or twoyear deal for you know 10 12 million per year this would be the time to do it because you could argue they do have at least one hole in that Bullpen heading into next season and getting a veteran guy who’s been there who has good stuff could be a solid middle reliever I I think would just be a really nice addition to this Bullpen and I do think they’re G to add one guy to the pen in free agency and as you can see from the breakdown I kind of think there is one open spot but let me know in the comments if you think you know any of these guys who are are hanging around on the roster could fill it or if you’d rather see the orals go out into free agency and later this offseason I will go through kind of my my free agent wish list for relievers and talk about the guys that are out there that the O’s could go after but the Orioles are still adding to the roster Le at least adding to the system at this point they’ve been handing out some minorly deals and reportedly last week reportedly they handed out another one to a former top prospect we’ll talk about that coming up [Music] next but first this episode is it game time so as we move along on this Orioles news and notes episode wanted to talk about a reported minor league signing that the Orioles have made because reportedly they have signed infielder Franklin beretto to a minor league deal now I am making big emphasis on the reported because generally and especially so far this offseason the orol have have signed a handful of players to minor league deals of of varying levels and generally within a day or so of it being reported it’ll show up in the official minor league transaction log on mlb.com and the Orioles website and it makes it an official transaction even though it’s not a player who’s added to the 40-man roster so it doesn’t necessarily like get announced by the team team this is a move that has been reported but it’s been over a week at this point since we saw something about it and there still really hasn’t been anything official at least Again full transparency I am recording here on Sunday night this is our Tuesday episode so maybe in between we get the at least official transaction log at mlb.com but either way it hasn’t come across yet because the way this came out was that Franklin beretto he’s an infielder he’s 28 years old he’ll be 29 in Fe feary he has been playing in the Mexican League and his Mexican League team put out a graphic last week on Wednesday basically saying hey congratulations to Franklin beretto he is signing with the Baltimore Orioles and and you would figure obviously that is a minor league deal and a couple of outlets have picked up on it but only going off of that report it seems it hasn’t come through that transaction log yet which could just be a formality but also is odd that it’s been almost a week and it’s not up there yet but let’s operate in this episode like yes it is official Franklin beretto has been signed to a minor league deal by the Orioles now who is Franklin beretto again I mentioned 28-year old infielder going to be 29 in February who last appeared in the majors in 20120 so he does have some big league time 2018 2017 2019 and 2020 with the A’s also a little bit of 2020 with the angels as well but he’s been in the Mexican League really since then and and played there in 2024 he was pretty good 343 average 430 on base 558 slugging hit 16 home runs but the Mexican League is a gigantic hitters environment we’ve talked about this a bit because the Orioles have already signed believe this is the fourth player they’ve signed to a minor league deal out of the Mexican League in less than a month of this off season so far they’ve clearly had some Scouts down in Mexico this year but it’s a huge hitters environment hitting stats are incredibly inflated so yeah 343 average looks amazing but that’s above average in that league but it’s much closer to it than it would be in Major League Baseball now he was playing in the Mexican League for a good chunk of the 2023 season as well but that was after being released by the Nationals where he was in triaa with the Nats in 2023 and just was not good had about a 100 plate appearances a 22 average of 76 WRC plus he was not great he was with the Astros in tripa in 2022 he was horrendous he played the full season there and had a 35 WRC plus that year in trip the offense just uh was not there for Franklin beretto at that time and that was although it could be some of him coming back from the injury he actually got Tommy John surgery as a position player that caused him to miss the entirety of the 2021 season and then when he came back in 22 he was not able to break back through to the big leagues but as I mentioned 2017 to 2020 with the A’s and the angels in the big leagues he was uh originally with the Blue Jays as a top prospect went to the A’s and the Josh Donaldson deal then he he got to the big leagues with Oakland in 2017 and played 25 games wasn’t very good came back in 2018 at age 22 he was a little bit better in limited playing time was really bad in limited playing time in 2019 was even worse in limited playing time in 2020 with those two teams all in all he’s played in 101 Big League games 237 plate appearances 175 career average 207 on base 342 slugging that’s a 45 WRC plus a 3% walk rate and a 42% strikeout rate in his big league career in 237 plate appearances that is absurd now he has been a utility guy he’s played second base shortstop and left field in his big league career you can move him around a little bit and he’s always put together like good Barrel rates good hard hit rates up until 2020 he had really Elite Sprint speed as well he was super fast on the bases and the field that allowed him to play both the infield and the Outfield and again this guy was a highly ranked Prospect at one point now the plate discipline has always been his issue and you can see that from a 3% walk rate and a 42% strikeout rate in his 101 Big League games but besides that that was the one hole in his game where it seemed like I mean he was a top 100 Prospect in baseball for most of his time in the miners I believe the highest anyone had him ranked is baseball perspectus in their 2016 preseason list they had brto ranked as the 26th best Prospect in all of baseball like he was never a top 10 guy but this was a well-known Prospect in the blue J system then especially once he got traded over to the a system it was getting closer and closer to the big leagues but it just it it never kind of worked out for him he’s been out of the majors for a while but maybe he can get his chance you know the O have some injuries they need to go to him maybe they will but generally this will be another guy that the O have brought in that they will use as a depth guy that he’ll go to Triple A norfol he’ll play multiple positions he’ll give guys some breaks he won’t you know block any prospects from playing but he’ll be there when guys get injured when guys need a day off he’ll move around he’ll fill some different roles and hey you know here’s the other thing he’s only going to be 29 years old it’s not like the O are bringing in some 35y old to just be a depth guy like he’s still only going to be 29 which should be in the prime years of your baseball career he’s had some success in the Mexican League again hitters environment maybe he can translate it to Triple A and at worst maybe he can be a productive player for the tides that helps out the organization as a whole and maybe even better you know he can get back those hard hit rates and those Barrel rates and that speed that he showed when he was a top prospect with the A’s and when they were giving him chance after chance the big league level and these weren’t like the terrible horrendous A’s like these were A’s teams that were trying to get to the postseason the time that he was there 2017 through 2020 they were giving him some chances because he had that Prospect pedigree maybe he figures it out again and maybe he’s a guy who the Orioles could turn to if they needed to but again always good to have depth you could never have enough depth you know the Orioles had to bring in the JD David davises and the Nico goodram of the world and the gar Coopers at the end of last year in Triple A because guys were just getting injured and getting called up and getting traded always good to have guys like this in your back pocket and it’s even better when they are former top prospects and and they’re only 29 and you think there still could be something in there for Franklin beretto once of course we hopefully finally find out that this minor league signing is official by the Orioles one more segment of things to get to here on this episode a lot of former Orioles have been in the news over the past week or so just wanted to run through things happening with those guys and how it may connect to the Orioles current team that’s coming up next to finish off the [Music] pot but first this episode of the on Orioles podcast is also lot of former Orioles coming up in the news around Major League Baseball and just kind to run through some updates on some of these guys we start with Austin Hayes as we know he was traded to the Phillies for seranthony Dominguez at this year’s trade deadline Orioles needed a relief arm Phillies need a right-handed hitting outfielder both guys were under contract through 2025 both guys had been better in the past were kind of having their struggles in 2024 it seemed like a very even trade betting on the players and just trying to fill a need for each team that was trying to go and win a World Series now neither team did but I think we can convincingly say that the Orioles won that trade because seranthony Dominguez was good down the stretch he became the Orioles deao closer when they needed it and the O’s have picked up his $8 million team option so he’ll be back in a big part of this bullpen in 2025 didn’t go the same way for Austin Hayes in Philadelphia he was non-tendered by the Phillies on Friday making him a free agent one year early this off season and he was just not good when he was on the field with the Phillies only played 20 two games with Philadelphia 80 plate appearances a 256 average just an 85 WRC plus and he did not draw a walk zero walks in 80 plate appearances with the Phillies that is certainly the Austin Hayes that we got to know at times in Baltimore now he had a tough time of it just healthwise as well he had a hamstring injury where he missed some time then he had a kidney infection which seemed a bit scary luckily that seems to be all straightened up he did return at the end of the year he was on the postseason roster with the Phillies as well so hay seems to be healthy which is you know obviously something we’re we’re pulling for over here but that’s a lot of nasty stuff to go through and the Phillies just didn’t feel like at his price that he would help them in 2025 so he becomes a free agent a year early obviously you non tender the one guy on the on the one side the Orioles certainly won that trade now if you’re starting to think about it Austin Hayes would kind of fit back on this roster Orioles looking for a fourth fifth outfielder type who hits right-handed and can play all three Outfield positions and can hit some lefties like he would fit but I I don’t think it was the greatest breakup with the Oriol when that trade happened and I just I don’t know he’s going to get a major league he’s going to get an mob deal I don’t think anyone’s just gonna give him a minor league deal he’ll get a major league deal from someone I think Austin Hayes is someone who fits better on a bad team to to be a starting outfielder and try to rebuild his value and then go back into free agency next year maybe get traded at the deadline and and help a contender again it’s possible there’s a reunite W with the Orioles but it seems unlikely at this point and another orial that the O’s moved on from this year was also non-tendered and that is right-handed reliever Dylan Tate who was non-tendered by the Blue Jays you remember the Orioles DFA him earlier this season Blue Jays claimed him he only pitched in five triaa games and three major league games for the Jays did Dylan Tate after he was claimed it just kind of another Lost season for Tate you know it was really odd o didn’t have him for all of 2023 was trying to battle back from a forearm and elbow issue didn’t get surgery but also missed the entire year that he came back this year but the velocity was so up and down the command was up and down he was good at times he was bad at times you could tell he was just not the same piture after that injury and the Orioles sent him down to Triple A a few times and finally decided to DFA him he was one of the the final pieces remaining that came over at the 2018 kind of big fire sale uh that the Orioles executed before they went into that rebuild but hey you know what I don’t know how much Dylan Tate helps you but if he’s willing to do it I would certainly bring Dylan Tate back on a minor league deal with an invite to Spring to see if he can rebuild his value and maybe he can fight his way into the the one open spot in the oral Bullpen we’re talking about but again if anyone’s willing to give Tate a major league deal he should certainly take that but if not and on the Orioles I do like Dylan Tate i’ I’d definitely be offering him a minor league deal to come back to Baltimore now speaking of some more guys who are with the O’s this year and have signed elsewhere have a little bit better news on them Austin Slater is the Orioles first major league free agent to sign with another team this offseason Slater who came over from the Reds and the Giants at deadline to the Orioles and became kind of a platoon playing outfielder who did help them down the stretch and had been pretty bad in San Francisco and Cincinnati but he was a better than League average hitter for the O’s and and certainly helped them in some different ways this year 102 WRC Plus in 79 plate appearances with the Orioles but he signed a one-year basically $2 million deal Major League deal with the Chicago White Socks and it was funny Slater actually talked in his press conference after signing with the white socks that he said not only were the white socks the first team to reach out to him this offseason when he officially became a free agent but they also told him that he was their top priority in free agency and that of course has brought a whole lot of jokes onto the white socks from the baseball internet for good reason like hey I like Austin Slater a player like Austin Slater should not be your top priority in free agency but he’ll presumably come in be maybe a starting outfielder maybe a fourth outfielder but I think the Orioles probably had interest in bringing him back as I just mentioned with Austin Hayes that kind of can play all three Outfield spots hits right-handed can hit lefties be a fourth outfielder I think the O’s are looking for that this off season really depending on what happens with Anthony santand there so I think there was interest there but the fact that the White Soxs were able to jump the line and tell him those priority Slater will get more pled appearances he gets to sign earlier probably get more money in this deal with the white sock and a chance to rebuild his value either rebuild it to a point where he can sign with another team next off season or rebuild it to the point where hey if he has any value the White Sox are going to trade him at the deadline and maybe they deal him to a contender to help a team down the stretch so congrats to Austin Slater for that and congrats to him and his family as they had a child born last week as well kind of right after he signed with the white socks so obviously a cool week for Austin Slater and we thank him for his service with the Orioles down the stretch this year another Oriol from this year signed elsewhere that is Left-Handed reliever Matt crook who signed a minor league deal with the Oakland Athletics Orioles had claimed crook off waivers from the Yankees last off season he had brief pitched in the big leagues with New York and they sent him to Triple A where he spent most of this year he’s he’s an interesting pitcher I was I was listen I loved Matt crook like I was so intrigued by his profile as a pitcher I talked about it a lot more than I should have for a guy who pitched in one game at the big league level for the Orioles this year but he’s a lefty with these gigantic strikeout rates and these huge walk rates he’s got this disgusting slider you hear that profile and you think oh this is a player that you know throws 97 and has no idea where it’s going well actually he throws like 90 to 91 miles hour maybe and yet he still doesn’t know where it’s going but the slider is so ridiculous that if he can throw it anywhere near the Zone it’s just basically unhitable like he threw 44 innings in norfol had a 392 ra had an amazing 33% strikeout rate and a revolting 177% walk rate you basically got what you paid for in Matt crook again the Orioles called him up and gave him one appearance in the middle of the year against the Rangers sent him back down and kind of that was it I was very intrigued by him but again signing with the A’s there’s a good chance he he gets a solid amount of innings at the big leagues next year had he come back to the O’s it would have been a real fight for him to get back to the big league so I’m sure there was interest from Baltimore but totally understand him signing that minor league deal with Oakland two more things to get to First is Moises CH the right-handed pitcher who the Orioles traded to the Philadelphia Phillies along with Seth Johnson in the Gregory stto trade at the deadline last year chass who was at that point a top 25 Prospect in the orial system well he has been added to the a 40-man roster by the Phillies with that 40-man roster deadline last week chass was rule five draft eligible and the Phillies have protected him on the 40 man he was the number 24 Orioles Prospect in their system via fan graphs when that list came out in June mid90s fastball good ride he’s got a change up and a slider he had a 346 ER with really high strikeout rates in aine with the Orioles but he had never even gotten to double a now the Phillies eventually sent him to dou a at the end of the year and he made two starts or he he made four starts there in daa and had 35 strikeouts to seven walks in those four starts in doua and that was enough for the Phillies to protect him now generally in the rule five draft these days if a player has not pitched in Triple A yet they’re probably not going to get selected Chas not only has he not pitched in Triple A he’s only pitched four games in double A so I’m not sure a team would have really picked him in the rule five draft but the Phillies decided to add him to the 40 Man anyway and I do think that was one of the reasons why the Orioles were okay with tr him they like his stuff but there’s questions about the things beyond the fast and I don’t think they planned to add him to the 40 man roster and I think there was maybe a little bit of worry from them that he would get picked in the row five draft so they just thought let’s get something for him let’s add him in this deal and they were able to get Gregory stto in that trade just too far away from the big leagues maybe to be drafted but they obviously thought there was a chance and if Gregory stto can continue what he did in September of this year had helped the Orioles next season that was a fine trade that the O’s made with the Phillies and the last piece of news is host Jose Flores I don’t know if you remember Jose Flores but he has been promoted to Boston Red Sox first base coach now Jose Flores he was with the Orioles coaching staff was kind of one of the first coaching hires by the Orioles and Mike Elias came in he was their third base coach and infield coach in 2019 and 2020 before the Orioles let him go for what was reported as financial reasons after the 2020 season now Flores had worked with Brandon Hyde in the Cubs organization that’s one of the reasons why they brought him over on Hyde’s first coaching staff when they first hired him as manager for the 2019 season but the big reason why you may know Jose Flores mean I’m mentioning this because he’s now in the division again he was the Red Sox triaa bench coach the past couple of years now he comes to the big league coaching staff Chris Holt was hired by the Red Sox as their Bullpen coach the two of them know the Orioles well they know each other I’m sure and they are now back in the AL so the O’s will see them a lot but you may remember Jose Flores from an unfortunate moment for the Orioles in August of 2019 now this was a few months before I start Ed hosting this podcast so can’t really go back and and listen to my thoughts about it from then but it was August of 2019 and Richard BL came out of a game remember Richard BL let’s remember some Orioles guys here from 2019 and got into a screaming match with Jose Flores who remember was also the infield coach and the screaming match was regarding the shifting and infield positioning Richard BL thought that the shift had caused him to give up a lot of hits that should have been outs and the reporting was that the orios actually did not shift behind BL for the final month of the season and his numbers actually did get better in September after that screaming match the two seemed to come out all right from it but it was caught on camera people saw it happen it was not a good moment for the orol they had already had the screaming match between Brandon Hyde and Chris Davis earlier that year like man you can think back to how dysfunctional things were at times the beginning and the 2019 Orioles boy was that a baseball season the 2019 Orioles I’m kind of happy that I didn’t take over this podcast till 2020 I didn’t have to uh deal with that certainly did as a fan but not uh as a daily podcaster back then but yeah some memories of what it was before this team got good Richard BL yelling at Jose Flores in The Dugout now Jose Flores is back in a big league Dugout this time with the Red Sox but lucky that this is now the 2024 and into 2025 Orioles and no longer that disaster of a 2019 team but that’ll do it for today’s episode thank you so much for tuning in I’ll be back tomorrow doesn’t look like I’ll have an
