T night breaking news Juan stto is headed to the New York metx 15 years $765 million baseball’s biggest free agent gets the biggest deal in professional sports history and in decidedly unmet fashion none of this money is deferred there are optout related escalators that actually could boost the deal north of $800 million a deal that also includes a $75 million signing bonus if you’re the Mets you’re investing in both proof and potential because Juan sto World Series champion turned 26 in October and he already has four career Seasons with 25 home runs and 125 walks only Barry Bonds Babe Ruth and Ted Williams have more since debuting in 2018 stto leads all of baseball with a 421 on base percentage and 769 walks he also ranks in the top five in Ops and wins above replacement we speak the language of Buster only the hot stove is always burning with Buster he’s with us Buster what’s the impact of stto leaving the Yankees for the Mets yeah Rand we have to put this contract into context think about it it’s just a year ago that sh Otani got a record deal present day value of about $460 million well stto gets a deal worth $35 million more just a year ago that’s absolutely insane this was the full manifestation of the finance fial power of the richest owner in baseball Steve Cohen outbidding the Yankees the Mets offer was about $51 million a year the Yankees offer was $475 million a year also no deferred and so the Mets wind up with one of the greatest hitters that we’ve ever seen $51 million is insane but when you contextualize it across 15 seasons for like the best hitter in baseball kind of look good value what does this now mean though Buster for the Yankees man and look there are it’s still early in free agency there are a lot of options out there they could turn to Alex bregman for example the Astros free agent third baseman they could turn to Corbin Burns Walker bu they’re all free agents but the bottom line is whichever direction the Yankees go it’s going to feel like that it’s going to be less than what they had in 2024 when Aaron judge had one of the greatest Seasons we’ve ever seen a he and stto playing Superman and Batman going back to back in the lineup that’s gone and there’s a lot of work for Brian Cashman the Yankees general manager as we move forward as for the Mets the domino effect contractually I mean the Steve Cohen’s reputation as a big spender is well documented and and well earned in this case what else though could be done for the Mets and Pete Alonzo’s deal is still looming out there how does this move for stto impact all of the other potential moves yeah there’s no question that the for the Mets the priority going forward is pitching they essentially have to fill out the top of their rotation Corbin Burns is a possibility Max freed is still out there something to remember agents and Executives have long believed that when Boris does his moves a lot of times he’ll twin his clients and he represents Corbin Burns so maybe as part of the conversation understanding with the Mets they know that they’re going to be talking about Burns in the future maybe Pete Alonso another Boris client will benefit from that but you can bet that part of the reason why Wan so to chose the Mets is he believes in Steve Cohen’s ownership he believes that Cohen’s going to spend what it takes to win and we’re going to see that play out here over the next couple weeks Buster much appreciated for the information and those watching at home probably asking is that a halo over Buster only’s head and in fact it is he is our angel of information is headed to the New York Mets 15 years $765 million baseball’s biggest free agent gets the biggest deal in professional sports history and in decidedly unmet fashion none of this money is deferred Bobby Bia there are optout related escalators that could boost this deal north of $800 million it does include a $75 million signing bonus sto’s deal means that the two largest contracts of professional sports history are now owned by Major League baseball players sh Otani he of the 10 here $700 million deal with the Dodgers last winner and now sto’s 15-year deal also the longest contract in MLB history it surpasses for under tati Jr’s 14-year contract signed with the Padres in 2021 so 5 more years and 65 more million than show Hayes as we welcome Buster only back into the program so Buster the Mets they lost to the eventual World Series champion in those Dodgers in the LC NLCS are the Mets trying to replicate LA’s model here with just throwing as much money to as many stars as they can no Gary this is very very different than how the Dodgers built their team Andrew Freeman ahead of baseball operations for the Dodgers does not like to pay sticker price he got Freddy Freeman with a ton of deferred money he got sh hotani with a ton of deferred money he got mie Bets with a ton of deferred money this is the Mets paying sticker price plus this is like buying the Lamborghini and getting customized and tricked out and the whole thing look I mean this contract that he got was more than twice what the Yankees paid for Aaron Jud just two Winters ago think about that now the question question is can they build a pipeline of pitching in the way that the Dodgers have okay that’s actually a perfect segue because obviously you get the Marquee free agent 26 years young so he’s going to be a metropolitan into his 30s and possibly his 40s what else though can the Mets do short term to bolster this roster that was pretty close to a World Series appearance yeah Gary they got to add pitching look they lost almost all their rotation from 2024 they signed clay Holmes the other day the for Yankee reliever in the hope that they can convert him to a starter but they’re going to need more help and I mentioned before that there’s always been a thought among Club Executives that when Scott Boris has an elite free agent like Juan SoDo he sometimes will twin clients with a particular team so maybe the Mets moving forward signed Corbin Burns who used to pitch for David Sterns when he was with the Milwaukee Brewers maybe they add to someone like Max freed there are still options out there in the marketplace but if the Mets are going to contend with the Atlanta Braves with the Philadelphia Phillies in this incredibly strong National League East they are going to have to add pitching they now have a 26-year Cornerstone to help build around with World Series Championship pedigree in Juan stto [Music]
