Penn State gets the job done despite sloppy start
The Penn State team played an uncharacteristically sloppy game in the first half against Minnesota. The team had a blocked punt and extra point in the closing minutes of the first half, leading to nine points in the final two minutes.

The offense struggled to run the ball, gaining just 19 positive yards in the first half on the ground. In turn, quarterback Drew Allar did most of the heavy lifting, passing for 159 yards in the first half and running it in from four yards out of a score that put Penn State within one before reserve defensive tackle Kale Artis allowed the extra point to be blocked and returned for a touchdown.

The defense put together more of its third-quarter magic. After an opening drive for a field goal, the Lions forced back-to-back three-and-outs, allowing the offense the breathing room for a touchdown drive to go ahead with the lead in the fourth quarter.

After a close call on the second drive of the fourth quarter, the Penn State defense held at the goal line to force a field goal that cut the lead from four to one.

Penn State’s offense iced the game after that with a scoring drive.

🕵️‍♂️ Transcript:

I hope you like late season drama Penn State wins a nailbiter all the way down to the final fourth down play where Penn State Rose the football and they complete it down to the 2 yard line of course the Tyler Warren I’m Thomas rank car Sean Fitz with me and we will be the full crew is going to be here we’re going to be doing this like it’s uh like it’s a live show in the middle of the week Nate B’s going to be joining us because uh Greg pickle in Minnesota by himself there was so much that happened in this game we get to have full show just about you know up to halftime so Sean Fitz publish your bluee Illustrated decom love the look today I love it um initial thoughts of the game I was inspired so thank you for that uh initial thoughts 26 25 is a victory in my book uh you know I don’t think it was great for the heart uh the the um the greater heart of nitty Nation um but Penn State found a way to get through and what I like there at the end is they figured it out and they were aggressive and they they took it to them at the end there five minutes to play roughly uh whenever they got the ball back and uh wasn’t the prettiest thing I’ve ever seen but it made it happen dogs dogs are enjoying it too yeah they’re having a great time um it’s uh it was a big play play decision big moment decision for James Franklin to go for a fourth down fake punt to Luke Reynolds um who not only got the first down but that got 30 yards 35 yards setting up the um uh the situation that penate could be as aggressive as they were at the end of the game because going FR on fourth down inside the Red Zone with less than two minutes left you’re making Minnesota Drive the length of the field at that point and then going forward again on fourth down where as long as Jurell doesn’t get sacked or he doesn’t throw an interception um throwing it away in that situation with 20 seconds left you’re making them go 85 90 yards at that point so Penn State I I I I love that play call I as much as it looked Herky jerky I love the decision to not be predictable in these situations and on that final play go to your best player um I don’t think it was necessarily intended for him uh i i s I saw them working on that play and practice I didn’t think it’d be the very last play of the game but they finally got Tyler Warren um in that situation to ice the game um the sloppy I would call this game from Penn State defensively special teams uh I don’t think that the offense was terribly sloppy but they were not totally effective throughout the course of this game not running the ball well between the tackles but again like I didn’t expect them to be able to run the ball between the tackles so what did you think of the defense you know that side of the ball has been good all year that I’d say this is their first bad game that they played yeah they they forgot how to tackle there in the first half and that’s kind of you know that that that is we’re not coaches here but that’s an important part of the defensive scheme um is bringing the player to the ground they got they got folded in layers here it was it was not so much about just getting ground down it was about those those backside uh you know those backside runs and just getting getting uh just carved up from from behind basically and I think that that’s that really hurt them uh you know rosmer credit to him threw a couple balls that I I mean Jaylen Reed’s still wondering how he didn’t get a pick in there there in the fourth quarter you see it broke the guy’s helmet the receiver’s helmet like Snapped that’s I mean that’s amazing that’s like Necessary Roughness stuff but it was uh it was really tough to uh to sort of sit there and think okay this defense who has been really good all year and I know people have sort of been hand ringing about this but like that was that was not a good performance that was not not really what you’re looking for but but you think back to some of the bad defenses that we’ve seen the bad defenses in college football and 25 points you end up feeling okay about um but yeah that that that’s something that needs fixed that’s something that uh in the next month assuming Penn State does get a uh a playoff game still home playoff game whatever like a lot of that stuff needs cleaned up so I think just from level to level just seemed very disjointed it so this is a weird game this is straight up weird game now that I’m looking at some of the final totals Minnesota only had 281 yards Penn State near like penate almost had 400 in this game so it’s close to doubling the amount of yards um maybe it’s about it’s about a 100 yards difference excuse me the again don’t ever do live math because you you’ll just be terrible at it so anyway um I it 175 yards passing didn’t feel like that only 106 yards rushing 2.9 yards per carry didn’t feel like that uh it just it’s just a very disjointed game and I think part of that fits goes back to the um the the Mis cues on special teams where if you don’t have the two points and you you have that so subtract two points for the blocked kick that’s 23 and then let’s say they get a field goal instead of a touchdown because they pped the ball correctly and now we’re Four Points below that so it’s 2619 that’s more in line with the statistics that we’re seeing you know from the final fil from the final tally here so maybe the defense is getting a bit of a bad W but they were not good in that Sudden Change situation and I’ll be interested to see for sure what you were saying about those Miss tackles how many of those numbers I also thought that Minnesota did great job of of in this game um getting up on the linebackers very quickly so as much as it was that Pence was missing some tackles they also were in Conflict Kobe King didn’t have a great game because he had a guard or or a center on him at the second level consistently and I think that’s a bit of a change for Minnesota they weren’t working into those double teams as much they were just aggressively getting the second level trying to use Penn State speed against them of we’re not going to block these defensive tackles one-on-one so let’s just try and and gash them and they got a couple of those in key situations and it’s another one of those like high leverage situations where a lot of those Miss tackles came on third down extended drives and that’s why I like to go to the drive chart and check this out because since they did force them to go three and out um in the third quarter on I thought this was back-to-back drives they had a third quarter three and out and then they went um he had a nine playay Drive in the third quarter so the the third I guess in general the third quarter defense out where they only gave up a field goal but at the same time it was not necessarily nine playay 51 yard drive for a field goal it was that the other Drive ended in the fourth quarter for a fumble that’s what it was where they went 16 yards and then gave the ball up very quickly yeah I think I think it goes back to what we’ve been saying about this defense all year you’re grading on a curve here like considering how good Penn State’s defense has been and then all of a sudden you have these little lapses where you end up with 25 points on the board and you’re feeling like it it feels like 40 to Penn State fans just because they’re not used to that sort of thing Kobe stepped up in a couple of really big spots made some some good open field tackles which was really sort of averting them there so uh I I I got to say we’re GNA get into defensive player of the game but yeah I think there was some some times that they stepped up I mean that’s kind of what Minnesota does right it kind of I don’t want to say LS you to sleep but it stretches the game out it puts you in those difficult situations and they did a good job a much better job than Penn State on third Downs Penn State finished the game uh one of 11 on third Downs five of 12 for Minnesota um the caveat there of course Penn State three or four on Fourth Downs that helps when you do that um but uh you look at what Minnesota did and I think they were very successful in what they set out to do against this Penn State Defense um I think just those extra couple of plays really really popped up you’re talking about the fumble you’re talking about the fake punt um and you know you’re you probably that the national media is gonna jump on this and say they had to fake a punt to beat Minnesota but I mean they they faked a punt and beat Minnesota like I don’t I don’t know how you get around that yeah and and again the the five minute offense they took the ball and end of the game with a sick essentially a six-minute drive and and for penate to be able to do that considering the fact that they hadn’t been able to run the ball all game especially between the tackles uh get into a little bit of that because I thought that was a very interesting situation something I’m going to be going to and watching the film tomorrow to see what in the world was going on in the interior because I had my opinions coming in this game but P was still able to run at times but then very much wasn’t able to run uh and part of that is going to be uh our postgame coverage which you can sign up for right now we’ve got an awesome deal one week for a dollar and then you enroll automatically in our yearly halfof promotion so you’ll be in for 50% off after your first week for a dollar you can obviously cancel at any time we’re not going to be like hooking you in and then you know head loocking you until you give us all your money it’s one of those situations where we’re combining our two most popular deals to give you the opportunity to try it out for a week and say hey do we like this do I not like this do I want more of this and then you can sign up for the full year at bluewhiteillustrated.com um that’s our pitch now here is the defensive player of the game the defensive player of the game is brought to you by State College criminal defense attorney Matt mcclanan McClanahan Law Firm how this happened how we did this now that we’re end the basically the end of the season I want to tell the story I was at an event downtown that was talking about PSU nil I was going there to represent blue white Illustrated but also to learn more about the nil efforts going on downtown and during the presentation I sat to next to this guy and we had a conversation and we were talking about pen football and he was having a great time and I’m like hey what’s your name and he told me I’m Matt I’m a pen Super Fan I was like all rightel here’s my business card if you ever want to do anything and he’s such a big fan and he’s a fan of blue white Illustrated and a member he’s like yeah of course like let’s do the postgame show so he has been telling like we’ve had this conversation basically since then all year long just talking about pen football so if you are a pen Super Fan like him you’re ever in a situation where you need him hopefully you never are mattm law.com that’s mattm law.com defensive player of the game for you Fitz Zan Durant uh was pretty fantastic I’m sorry if I took yours we didn’t compare notes before we came on here but well there was one answer but yes yeah but yeah okay we’ll go with that um he was involved quite a bit it was really interesting because I thought that the uh the defensive tackles were hot and cold um of course you lose Alonzo Ford to an injury because I isard sort of in and out but Zay Durant was was the guy um I thought and I thought he did a really good job I thought Devon J Thomas did as well um because it it was interesting because you were talking about the Run game and in Minnesota quote unquote dashing you know gashing them or whatever but it really I don’t think it was on the tackles I think they were trying to move the move the way or move the line down uh you know stretch that run out and then cut back and and that’s really where it got you and that’s the second level the defense and like I said Kobe King did a good job but Zay Durant I I thought and this is kind of where I was heading after that first quarter is the very first play of the second quarter Zay Durant’s in the backfield and he makes a ridiculous tackle for loss um ridiculous in the sense it was a really tough play to make maybe didn’t look that difficult but those are really tough to to to t to tackle those guys in the backfield and I’m like okay well that was a turning point that didn’t look like a turning point but I think Penn State’s good from here um obviously didn’t play out like that but uh the fact that uh Durant was all over the place um from where he was at and my God those guys they get grabbed quite a bit and talking I mean yeah I don’t want to be that guy but man it was just even the the one that got me was the Alonzo Ford injury I mean that was that was gratuitous I mean that was awful um yeah but uh they fought through it did a good job and uh Zayn Durant had tip on that one because he was pretty phenomenal yeah I I had a freeze frame of two Minnesota offensive linemen having one holding him back it kind of looked like a movie where he was like being dragged except he was dragging them forward um it was like the the amount of I I do I don’t like Freeze Frame football because you can make anything look like anything but I had multiple just watching the film back you know in in between drives and between you know commercial breaks and watching these things where you see an arm over top of a guy who’s behind the lineman pulling him backwards was a common thing um so I absolutely agree and by the way two and a half tackles for a loss on five total tackles for Zayn Durant when basically half of your tackles actually statistically half of your tackles are tackles for loss that is a Major Impact in the game and he had a bunch that you know he didn’t make that were just disruptive plays where he forced the uh running back to bubble blowing up the front side of of a scheme and being able to um affect the Run game to the point where it did turn the tide for Penn State and a lot of those run situations where those Minnesota running backs were really tough to tackle but they were able to string the play out and get a couple of those tackles for loss and get a couple of those third and Longs um final thought on on on Durant the or the defense here and then I want to get to the chat was a little bit surprised Penn State or excuse me Minnesota didn’t get Taylor out in more space he’s been a really good receiver for them in terms of like they throw the heck out of it uh to him and uh three catches for eight yards that’s a pretty good job containing um one of the better running backs in the Big 10 so did a good job um we talk about the guys stepping up on defense and I think you just have to go to the next step and say yeah there was a lot of guys that need to finish better and uh you talk about Deni Dennis Sutton who I think still hurt and then I think he got further injured um in that uh I believe it was in the fourth quarter um Tony Roos who somebody just mentioned he’s been he’s been um he’s been playing better and tackling better and I think he did a really good job I believe it was the play in the fourth quarter where he was wrangling the guy and then all of a sudden he’s just like I’m just gonna take him down instead of letting him potentially get away trying to pull him backwards he just didn’t just went with the momentum yeah it’s a small growth moment but it’s a growth moment nonetheless um so that you had that and you had some some things that definitely need cleaned up but uh you know you gota got to look at the final outcome you got to look at sort of the curve that we’re grading Penn State’s defense are always great and this was not a great week for them but uh after that second quarter and and and how many times have we said that this year after that second quarter they kind of pretty well clamped down there was a couple issues or a couple things that got away from him but uh pretty much clamped down I believe it’s six points after uh after halftime for for Minnesota you’ll take that every day yeah uh and that that’s a really I guess the the defensive player of the game conversation kobby King was very good after the beginning of the game the first drive in general I felt like Penn State was getting really greedy Abdul Carter was uh freelancing a little bit you had Alonzo Ford trying to hit a spin move I felt like Kobe King had jumped out of a gap or two but you’re right they settled down and some of those like initial Impressions that stay with you even when you’re trying not to feel you know not trying to feel the emotion of those they do tend to stay with you because I do think the more we talk about the more Kobe King did step up in that game and really helped to solidify everything in the middle want to app I want to appreciate the people in the chat here Bruno satam says not the best Pense game but fun to watch am I wrong or is Tony roas tackling better as Fitz just mentioned there’s still a couple times where he’s running around blocks I mean I’m i’ I’ve defended him for quite a lot of this year and like I have to step back from that like there are I feel like he’s pressing a little bit at times and and not just playing within the defense I agree with that I still think he’s going to be a good player it’s just it hasn’t happen this year hasn’t come together like we thought it might so um but yeah it’s uh it’s it’s part effort it’s part just kind of overthinking it and underthinking it at the same time like you you get into a spot and then you’re like how do I react to this and that’s by that by the time you think how do I react to this the guy’s already passed you so that’s not it’s not exactly ideal as you may have noticed Fitz can you get your logo up there I forgot to put mine on uh today’s show is brought to you by leat this is the laat postgame show so when you it’s time to kick back and watch the game a pillner as pristine you know it’s it’s always fun to do that two weeks out um but it’s November in State College it’s going to be cold it’s going to be a chilly game instead of a uh you know a regular tailgate game but uh no I can’t wait it’s a senior day always fun and uh we will be out tailgating also brought to you by leat uh laat blue laat light um we’ll be out there before the game and I can’t wait to uh spend one more time with uh with some really good friends that we’ve made throughout this this whole Venture yeah and make sure you come by and and say hi at the uh at The bluee Illustrated tailgate want to get here to a couple people in the chat who were here early uh Brett always here and I’m going to say your name really fast cuz I always there’s too many RS in it Brett uh the team will have a whole month to get better they won all that that’s all that matters time to figure out how to flop on holding um there’s an there were there’s a sentiment that if you don’t blow out another big 10 team it wasn’t a good win so winning 2625 on the road at Minnesota when you gave up uh two points on special teams had a blocked punt big guy big lion guy nine says how about Landing tangwell pregame com comments on the team winning this was a stat that he said James Franklin gives the team almost every week 90% of the games when there is a blocked punt the team that had a blocked punt that had their punt blocked they lose the game and Pate had a blocked punt and a blocked extra point and still found a way to win um uh they got it done and then KJ Johnson says it’s hard to win on the road that’s not going to impress the playoff committee run defense was too leaky again so so Fitz uh impressive not impressive have to be more impressive how do you feel about the results of the win not necessarily that they won and the record is still uh 10 and one heading towards the potential uh playoff seaing how do you feel about the team getting better to be competitive against good teams in the playoff I I feel okay because you look at the the way that they’ve prepared for bowl games in the past and you feel pretty good about it plus you’re coming you know it’s not exact exactly a bowl game if you get a home game you’re bringing a team into play against your weather against your circumstances against your crowd and I think that that that does matter I don’t know how much quantifi you quantify that but I think it does matter um I mean Penn State’s 10 to one and they win next week they’re 11 to one that’s what matters and and here’s the secret the committee likes Penn State even if the national media and and everybody you know talking about these shows doesn’t um Penn State went away they got a win in the Big 10 in November which is really tough to do um but at the same time yeah I mean it’s you’re I don’t think it’s going to matter a ton you’re not going to fall from I think honestly it probably would have mattered more if Indiana had beaten Ohio State but you’re probably not going to fall that far I mean if State Falls to seven maybe I could see that six seven is kind of where we’re we’re thinking about um but yeah I think that you just get through it and you get on with it because this is not a situation I don’t think the committee treats it as such um as a line graph where you’re talking about they played this well this week and then they went up this way for for Washington and they you know same same for Purdue and then down for Minnesota I think you’re you’re taking the whole body of work into consideration and we do so much prisoner the moment stuff where you’re talking about all these different games from week to week and you know Texas didn’t exactly look amazing against Kentucky I hav watched the game but you following the scores and stuff um like that’s going to happen and with no transitive property in college football with no uh week- toe continuity for a lot of these teams because there is not a team that is overwhelmingly dominant yeah you you you end up back at zero like you you end up back at the point you started going into this game and like I said there’s the the the punching bag is going to continue Penn State’s schedule’s going to be talked about you’re talking about know they only beat Minnesota by one and had to fake a punt to do it I mean you got it done and you’re 10 and one and your only losses to the number two team in the country by seven points like that’s that’s the resume that this committee is going to take into account more so than well H he should have thrown khil Dinkins instead of Tyler Warren uh the which was unequally I I understand the the Gary Danielson I I don’t think is in correct to say like that’s also a decent look it’s not as easy of a pass I think as it seems the fact that it’s over the middle of the field where it’s not it’s a it’s a kind of a vertical catch for dinkin who’s gonna have to catch it over his shoulder as opposed to out in front I I think that’s where you have to place the ball it was on that play I just think it was a bad ball placement by Aller uh it was a little too far out for for Tyler Warren D Danielson gave Penn State fans the out of here’s what he should have done which is obviously completely in hindsight um you’ve got do you want to throw the ball to Tyler with a freshman on him or do you want to throw it to khil Dinkins when you’re just kind of okay you know whatever um I I still think that that’s the read like that’s you know if you’re going out and you’re playing a video game that’s the read but yeah Tyler Warren’s been pretty damn good like and you take that shot I don’t think it was a good throw so I don’t I don’t mind the read there was a couple plays in this game I was like I don’t mind that play call it didn’t work but I don’t mind it uh just from the the the structure of what they were trying to do Drew Aller completes 75% of his passes let’s talk about the offense let’s talk about the fact that the receivers got involved in the first half half and then suddenly became the Tyler Warren show in the second half but overall again like I said about the score the stats not matching everything I don’t know that I was super impressed with Drew in this game but also completing 75% of your passes for 244 yards two touchdowns including running one in on a great goal line touchdown run I thought he ran physical and in the times where he had to do that he did a really good job of those are the moments he have you have to sacrifice your body a little bit as the quarterback I I’m I’m living this life as a Bills fan you’re in the territory now against like Kansas City Josh Allen has to be Superman you have to make some of those plays the game’s not going your way and I think Drew knew when to take hits knew when to run the football but generally there were a couple it looked like there was a little bit of Happy Feet Drew tonight where he missed some third down conversions and some throws to Tyler Warren that weren’t necessarily hard felt routine but it did feel like losing Dono R and and then some of the pressure he got early in the game rattle him a little bit do you think that he settled down enough or how what’s your assessment of the way he played tonight yeah he settled down enough in the sense that the best things that he did were toward the end of the game with his legs um in terms of you know he may have been able to fit a few into those windows but at the same time he picked up valuable yardage to get them close and put to get them in a down and distance situation where he needed to be he also went right at it with that touchdown before the end of the first half I know we talk about the uh the blocked extra point that came after it the subsequent return for two points but that was a huge play in the game at the time to get in the end zone to sort of feel the energy to to take a big sh I mean that that that looked like it hurt um I mean he got up and he was you know celebrating everything like that um I want to put the heating Pat on my hip for that one because that one that one like hurt um but no I think he that’s where really where he came through um you know you got the big ball down to Amari Evans in the first half that was awesome to see that’s something we’ve been looking for for a while and it wasn’t necessarily A scheme thing it was just a busted coverage and you’ll take those like those are going to happen even in the playoff those will happen um so you’ve got a good opportunity to make some of those throws he missed him later in the game which you said not a terrible throw same play uh and he got better coverage this time but he got behind the safety in cover two and there the the frustrating thing is like you had it because they had a double team between dinkin and Tyler Warren on the edge rusher and dinkin doesn’t touch him and then Tyler Warren gives a shoulder because they’re not pass blockers they’re tight ends and then you give up like a mild pressure and Drew has to like Drew through without his feet fully set and so that little that little thing of it wasn’t a full pressure but it was enough to move him off the spot when he was trying to throw that he sped everything up and that’s usually when Drew gets in trouble is when he feels like he has to speed up the throw and he has to get the ball out quickly because of pressure I I there were a couple times benga and and Dawkins didn’t pass off in in in pass protection so I feel like there were some plays early in the game that he was now more alert to the pressure but I appreciate the fact that he still loaded up and through because a lot of times in those situations if there’s one criticism that pensei fans are are it’s fair is that when he does feel pressure on a shot play he doesn’t hang with the read he wants to check it down and make sure he gets it to KRON Allen or Nick Singleton and on that one he at least threw the ball to Evans who was open want to rip through a couple of these here um Brett is back he says want to shout out Dom ruling on the fake punt uh on the Block insane play in time where James James Franklin coach to win versus not lose yeah I think that that’s a a I was worried he had been learning the wrong lessons from those close losses and so the fact that he did that um in that situation was was great Ted says glad we can for that for this who who loves Dom Ry I you do I do I do love Don Ry and that’s a heck of a play for a really really good football player um who is not blessed with the size and and some of the talent of the guys in front of him but he is a heck of a football player and I believe Nick Dawkins called him or told me this Summer that he was the heartbeat of the offensive line so to get that guy in there to get him out in front of there to get a really technical Blocker in front of him is is awesome and uh you know it was it was really interesting because they showed the the the fake punt from behind and Riley Thompson bailed out and as soon as he bailed out I said that’s a that’s a fake because you Tyler Dany does not miss you know that’s that’s kind of how you’re thinking with the with the uh with the Long Snapper there but that’s a that’s a heck of a call man like you got to think of all the calls that Penn State has made this year um from an offensive initiative standpoint like Penn State is not the team that pulls that off and PJ Fleck is going to be uh he’s going to have nightmares about that one for a long time because he even I think he even told the the CBS crew how they were looking for something like that but Penn State doesn’t do that and I tell you what it uh it Smooths over a pretty poor special teams performance on the whole um so nice little bounce back and you didn’t expect sometimes it’s it comes from where you least expect it came from true freshman Luke Reynolds followed but or following uh walk-on red redire freshman sophomore I can’t remember off the top of my head but Dom relly who made a really good block so um some good open field blocking uh Ry was there khil Dinkins today did a really nice job and really opened some things up for Nick Singleton who I’m sure we’re going to talk about because I thought he was pretty good yes uh we’ll get to that in just one second um we have Krypto ducat who says is Pence getting held as much as we think or is it just fan bias I’m not a fan I I’m I’m doing the analysis during the game I’m watching the replay and I’m telling you like I I don’t see holding every single game when I see it I call it out I hope that I’ve earned a reputation of being fair about that just like you know Tyler Warren fumbled the ball on that catch bang bang against Washington so yes I I believe this game they were getting held quite a bit in the game and it they were a able to fight through it in the second half better HF transplant says I think what what might be underrated after the Tyler Warren Pooch punt Franklin calms Drew down we saw that on on the TV broadcast Drew unbelievably frustrated and then got it together you know like that next Drive Bang Bang Bang three passes in a row to Tyler Warren gets back into Rhythm and they’re able to uh able to get the team um I think the offense centered again now we need to bring in our Nick Singleton expert here on the laat postgame show that is Nate Bower we have different uh variations of dress there is no dress code for this show ever but it has never been more on opposite ends because G Gordy says great win Fitz he wants to know what what’s the tie what’s going on with the tie because Nate’s in a backwards baseball cap so we’re all over the map tonight do we not watch the game do we not know the stick here uh we’re rooll the boat here buddy uh PJ Fleck loves the tie with the quarter zip over top and I have this lovely laat quarter zip that Kevin sent us um which is really great um by the way and I just was like you know what I’m just going to do it because Nate Nate thinks of me as the the slob andly one like the the slob of us too he obviously uh did not get the memo that we’re were going to do this so thanks for hanging me out to dry there buddy um no I mean it’s uh it’s fun like if you can’t have fun with it and I’m looking at the uh uh I’m looking at the chat here and a lot of you can’t have fun with it but if you can’t have fun with it why do you do it so that’s that’s what I’m that’s what I’m looking at for this game and for coming off of this and tell you what I didn’t put the tie on until about two minutes left so uh it was it was one of those things there was gonna be a different there was gonna be a different vibe if there was a loss you’re not gonna come on here with a stick if they lose that is wise I got I’m wearing sweats so like that’s kind of where that uh Nate what what are your obviously you have are a little late here to the show because you were writing over at blue white Illustrated tocom want to throw this up here for fans maybe who are just joining because we got a a ton of people who weren’t here before first off if you’re enjoying the show and you’re enjoying the J Fleck wannabe and my ugly sweater uh join us each week this is the BWI Live Crew for Tuesday we do this uh Tuesday Wednesday Thursday each week except for this coming week with Thanksgiving um it’s one week for a dollar and then you enroll for a full year at bluewhiteillustrated.com the YouTube show here is is free you know we’re out here having a good time talking about pen football three times a week live and of course postgame and pregame uh subscribe here to the YouTube channel and then uh check us out at bluewhiteillustrated.com including what Nate just wrote so Nate what did you just write tell us a little bit about your thoughts on tonight’s game uh I wrote the highs and lows which is mostly written before the game ends uh but in this one there were some outstanding things that needed to be resolved right I mean there was yeah the uh the conclusion was not uh well known listen I want to talk about something totally different than that can I can I uh just take us off the rails immediately that is that is what you do so yes that is okay here we go uh PJ Fleck should have gone for fourth and whatever it was inside the 10 yard line he should have gone for it he should not have kicked the field goal there I agree I I agree um because you’re you’re now in a one- score game hoping that your defense can stop Penn State and uh they did that I would I would the only thing I would disagree is they did Nate they did stop they were going I just like you I had two stories written and one of them was Penn State’s offense didn’t get it done and they get the ball back that was what was going to happen until James Franklin did what you want which is be aggressive in these situations so those can you compare those two decisions for us I just think as the as the team that’s trying to pull off the upset in in this case you are doing more the variables that you’re bringing into play by kicking the field goal and therefore being down by one point I understand if everything goes to plan you you kick off uh you get the ball back after you know whatever it is um but you’re you’re counting on so many more things happening than simply being able to like give it what you got what what whatever it is right whatever whatever play you have in the bag uh on fourth down there fourth and five fourth and six what whatever it is to get into the end zone worst case you’re turning it over to your defense anyway you’re still right you still are leaving it to your defense uh to to get a stop there and then force a punt and then at that point you still need a touchdown but I just think uh I’m I’m not saying it was definitely wrong or right that there was necessarily a right answer but I I I was personally kind of surprised that they didn’t go for that I I don’t remember specifically Nate if they were aggressive in this game or not um has he can I come in with the the reputation he’s got a reputation as a gambler that isn’t true like you see his stuff on the sideline and the yelling and all that kind of stuff he’s actually a pretty conservative coach and that’s kind of like all that other stuff kind of shapes like uh you know how you think a certain guy is a player’s coach and he’s he’s really not a player coach like that I think the sort of the stereotyping of of what we’ve seen from his personality over the years where the facts and the the play call and stuff like that kind of doesn’t go into that it’s not it’s not talking about running a triple reverse pass like that’s not what I’m I mean but in terms of like taking the risks I think he understands the talent level I think he understands the depth level and how that sort of balances out against a team like Penn State or some of the better teams on his schedule and he he’s not always balls to the wall like you think he would be coaching in that situation yeah um Nate I I think we started with and I know that you said you’re going to intentionally take us on off on a different direction um the the the decision to go for it on fourth down but not be it did it set up a a Minnesota score at one point for for Penn State where Drew Aller gets pressure up the middle on a fourth down and he takes a sack not only do they not get the fourth down they lose a ton of yardage on that play probably lost about 10 yards on that play uh but it didn’t deter them they came back again and again and again and were able to get fourth down conversions uh in a couple of different situations yep no they I well they started the game with three third down and ones and converted one of them right like like very legitimately and even Tyler Warren coming up short on Third and one in the first place before Drew had the sneak like they were having a hard time like Penn State had a very challenging time today uh getting a yard when it needed it yeah what what did you think of of the effort today on the ground because we were talking about this is a weird game to look at the stats They Don’t Really match up with anything you felt during the game where Minnesota has under 300 yards Penn State has 117 yards rushing at three and a half yards a carry obviously sack yardage is in there which I hate with looking at these final box scores but Nick Singleton looked good you know he looked good in the game it just was there were certain games and I can get into the x’s and those but like it’s what did you think of the Run game and how they were able to massage that throughout the game to get what they needed yeah there’s a um I’m just just I’m forcing myself to not take a Victory lap right now but uh they were Minnesota’s defense was very hard for you we know this so challenging I just I don’t know if you guys know but I actually picked Penn State to score 26 points in this game uh but I also I also did not anticipate Minnesota cracking 20 points um but to be fair to me nine of those points were gifted by a blocked punt and uh a returned yeah P um but no I thought I look I thought that uh you know the the inconsistency was like part of the deal I thought that Drew made some really crucial runs uh to put them into more advantageous third down situations that they got better at as the game went on I don’t have the stats right in front of me right now but I would imagine do we know what the third down conversion rate was I can look it up for you right now penate Penn State went one of 11 so no Nate they didn’t get better they just went for it on fourth down yeah they stayed bad on third down but uh got themselves uh over the goal line or over across the Finish Line I should say by uh by picking up those fourth Downs it was interesting because the coming to this game I wrote about this on Friday it was interesting Nate texted me a quote of James Franklin saying this is the best defense will play this year and the the the point of that was Ohio state has more Talent there’s no question that overall output that’s the better unit you’re going to see this year but defense means a lot of different things there’s a subtext to that conversation this is a smart defense and this is a scheme that can frustrate and does harder things because Ohio State they lean on their talent they play more simplistic coverages and they get away with it because they can do that Minnesota’s front six you know the two linebackers the front four are very good football players in a college sense I think 45 might play in the NFL he might like be a sixth round seventh round pick might be an you know practice squad guy that fights for a spot uh but they’ve got some talent that might translate to the next level up front their nose tackle 66 315 and their other guy is 6’4 and has length and athleticism this was going to be a hard unit to run on and they still were able to crack a couple runs with Nick Singleton in outside Zone I think that’s a great sign that in this game against a good defense they’re going to face a good defense that isn’t Ohio State later in the playoff they might face a defense that has similar talent to Minnesota they were able to run the ball at least enough between the tackles with Nick Singleton and KRON Allen ripped off a couple good runs as well but it was that inside Zone trying to run downhill that Penn State could not do in this game because those tackles and that middle linebacker were were good and against the the part of Penn State’s line that struggles against Superior Talent or equal Talent you know is Right Guard and Center they made enough plays in this game to get Penn State uh some balance enough that they were able to win this game in a g in a situation where Drew all throws 28 times and I think he had 159 yards at halftime that’s not how pensei wants to play in a game um any other things from the offense uh the receivers I guess we haven’t talked about that do you think this was enough to show growth and progress from from them in this game and I you know I can talk about what happened or at least what I think happened uh at halftime to kind of talk about where the production came from in the first half I think I think before we get there sorry um down in distance a major thing for Penn State they they had third and one twice to open the game in the second one they got um which was the last third down they got so they missed their last nine they went third and two third and 11 third and 15 6 n 10 9 1 10 like that is not ideal for Penn State also 0 for four passing on third down you don’t see that too often like even you know sometimes you get a screen or something like that just to fluff up those numbers but that was not uh not not traditionally ideal for Penn State in terms of their third down offense again three out of four fourth Downs is very good I prefer you didn’t get to fourth down but that’s just a personal preference yeah uh Nate receiver question yeah what do you think what do you think of the performance do you think that showed positional growth for a team that and I’ll just read it for you Amari Evans two catches 51 yards and a touchdown Trey Wallace four catches for 46 Liam Clifford one 148 and then the two leading Target Getters Tyler Warren Nick Singleton with 137 yards combined and uh 17 total targets yeah no status quo uh I I mean I don’t know I look the Omari pass is gamechanging and is the thing that has been absent for the bulk of the Big 10 schedule they just have not thrown that pass I I don’t again like I’m not in a situation where I can say whether or not Omari is open how frequently he has been open whether or not that is the first read where you know where Drew should go with the ball in those circumstances but I just know that Omari has not been part of the passing game through the Big 10 I mean the numbers are right there they don’t they don’t they haven’t made a concerted effort to get him the ball clearly today uh they had something that was working because he has another touchdown if Drew is able to deliver the ball on that on that second one so uh is is that is that progress yeah I think so but there was a comment early in the early in the broadcast that killed me I was laughing so hard the CBS commentator saying you know uh Minnesota runs its passing game through its receivers unlike Penn State like yeah that’s fair that’s fair yeah Minnesota uses its quarterback to throw the receivers the ball for the passing game to work Penn State throws it to Nick Singleton and Tyler Warren which ended up being the case again yeah this afternoon and it work so from they should not they should not stop doing it yeah from the first half um it was clear so first off they were playing a lot of 11 personnel meaning three receivers in the first half and Minnesota was playing off coverage so they play cover three quarters and some off man which means they’re going to be five to eight yards off the line of scrimmage and in those cover three situations those safeties then take a step back and Aller was attacking that as we saw in 2023 during you know the the beginning of the Season where that was basically the only throw in the p offense that had any consistency to it at all so in that situation they were attacking that soft corner and then they were trying to run slant flat and trying to get Trey Wallace running up field in between those uh those middle zones right and I thought Aller had a couple of really good throws one of them off of Wallace’s hands but he gets it over the linebacker in the window um and then the third quarter happens and I lost track because too many things are happening at the same time including me making the graphics for the show so I don’t know what in the second half I’m going to go find out uh in our film study which is a great reason for you to subscribe to Blue illustrator. so we can have that conversation tomorrow but it then became the Drew uh Drew Aller to Tyler Warren show in the second half like the the bottom line is what they did is um Drew Aller started checking down a little more and then Tyler Warren became the focus in the second half I think they just had the conversation of hey we’re down let’s get it to 44 and that became basically the game plan in the second half so I do wonder if if they were up would they have continued the game plan the same game plan and then Trey Wallace ends this game with six catches for 80 yards and do you feel differently about today uh but obviously they didn’t because they went back to their bread and butter which is Tyler Warren so there was some I guess to me there was some positive that they were actually involved them early in the game they made their receivers feel wanted and so baby steps baby steps I guess yeah Julian Fleming uh tweaked something in practice last week he was avail but did not I I don’t know that he got out there for many snaps if at all like I don’t remember him being out there um but yeah I mean I I thought Wallace was what he’s been most of the Year and that was a intriguing second option who did some nice things um nice whether that can cut it in the playoff or not I don’t know um but like did some nice things and made some some good catches even had a little uh I don’t want to spoil it yards after catch uh not too familiar with that around here um but did did some nice things there so I think he did a a pretty good good job and Penn State was was was fine going after or going at him I felt comfortable going at him so um yeah the expectations are where they’re at the the the yeah I don’t think we’re gonna like we’re not sitting here and telling you they’re anything great but uh they got they got their job done their specific job done today which is you know says the bar is as high as you think it is yeah uh Ryan says that second deep shot to Omari uh he needs to hit that if he wants to be an elite QB I admit I was livid on that play I you know I think we all agree that that misses Andrew because if he steps into that throw and he doesn’t hurry his his footwork there’s a pocket to step up now did Nick Dawkins tackle a defensive tackle on the way uh to the quarterback I I mean you can go watch the game on replay if you want to find that out but he did have a pocket to step into um it is a bang bang play like he can’t take forever because Amari Evans is gonna run out of the back of the end zone if he doesn’t throw that but if he puts more Pace on it and you know uh even if he’s a little bit late to the throw he still has the arm strength to get there I do think that there are those throws where the got to have it throws he ends the game let’s let’s end the criticism at there are a couple throws a game that he doesn’t nail and he’s not perfect on all these throws he ended the game with a perfect throw to Tyler Warren which led him back in bounds so that he didn’t stop the clock so you know that he had a good game but if you were looking for Drew ends the game on his own in the third quarter yeah that is that is part of the conversation of if he wants to be an elite QB at the next level not just at the college level yeah he has to those are the plays where he can he can make those plays Gordy says what are the thoughts on KRON Allen and Nick Singleton being better running from eye formation rather than shotgun um I I I don’t have an opinion on this because they don’t run it and I don’t necessarily believe that it matters um I’m not of the opinion that it necessarily matters for the running back but I don’t I’m not a football I’m not an offense coordinator I’m not an offensive line coach or running back coach because I don’t know the differences specifically in running from the eye formation or pistol and then running from shotgun um so I I I appreciate the question this has been debated since the spread formation happened and people always want the eye to come back with fullbacks and all those things um I I don’t I don’t necessarily have any sort of hard opinion on the Merit of running from the eye formation we haven’t talked to Nate about the defense Nate this game feels like uh the defense didn’t play well and again they only gave up 281 yards they only gave up 100 yards rushing 2.9 yards carry nobody averaged over four yards a carry on offense for Minnesota what were your thoughts on the way the defense played in this game I thought they gave up some explosives that I wasn’t necessarily anticipating um and when I say that it’s because Minnesota doesn’t ever have explosive plays um their offense is one of the worst in college football uh for that specific stat I think they’re 117th in yards uh in plays of 20 plus yards and they had one two three four five six uh seven of them tonight they had a 20 yard touchdown run they had every uh six passes of 20 plus yards including obviously the Flea Flicker whatever you want to call that uh touchdown uh at the end of the uh first half so yeah I thought that that in that sense the defense had a few issues but also you know uh you’re GNA give up points when the other team starts with the ball at your 20 yard line yeah that’s just that’s one when’s the last time we saw the peni defense in a sudden change situation give up a touchdown as immediately as they did there that’s another thing I was thinking of it has been a long time was there one in the Ohio State game I’m just not recalling immediately I don’t I don’t think there was but I could be wrong but it just feels like I’m thinking about M Northwestern uh in 2023 I think it was where they went out there and rough star for the offense suddenly they have the ball inside the 20 and they give up three three yards total and they kick a field goal feels like everyone’s good for a mulligan every once in a while for our golf Duo here like Nate not everyone hits the ball cleanly off the tea every single time and some sometimes you just don’t ever hit the ball cleanly off the te because you’re using the wrong Club um anyway I I just there was it was a off game for the uh for the for the coverage because it was a different it was a different game plan it wasn’t just short quick passes Nate you’re right they attacked downfield which is something we haven’t seen from them or people do against Penn State this year I my curiosity is whether or not Penn State was anticipating that like if that’s that’s the style that they were anticipating seeing think coming off a bye do you think that’s part of the conversation here Minnesota PJ Fleck coming off the bye maybe I don’t know I I I did not think that they played poorly I and again this is where you you fall into my wheelhouse of nonsense but I I just find it intriguing that how closely this mirrored end of game Southern Cal in like it is you know now if you didn’t already who James Franklin wants to end the game he it’s not not Penn State’s defense it is the offense they like they believe that the offense can do that can move the ball can uh sustain a whatever that ended up being a I mean that is the definitional four-minute drill to to yes to finish the game um you know so I I do it’s uh sacks weren’t great tonight um there was some bang bang thing right there were there were some almost I think the Jaylen Reed near interception that wasn’t an interception but also the defense was fortunate in the sense that the quarterback just literally just gave the ball over twice yes you take it you take it I don’t want it and then uh and on the the interception it was kind of the same deal so interesting yeah uh Michael Fox Says tough game for injuries T Frank did something that was earlier in the game talking about um Anthony dco uh I do think that that’s a get give credit to Nolan Ruchi I thought he played well in this game I didn’t see a ton of free pressures there was one where J would have had a touchdown if he was able to read the play um but he had that might have been the sack or a throwaway where they settle for a field goal but other than that I thought he played a decent game and they were a like like we said they able to run the game run the ball during the game um but the injuries Anthony Dono um Tyrese Mills uh uh Ford uh where was there another one um I know Deni got banged up as well uh it that feels rough especially given the situation with you know defensive tackle and and offensive tackle those are two big injuries to have in this game guys do you think that affects them how much do you think that affects the overall outlook for the offense specifically with dco uh if he’s able if he has to miss extended time it’s a big deal I mean sorry I was doing the chat yeah it’s um I also just threw it out into the Universe I could have been asking the chat and not you guys so so I apologize yeah I um I definitely think that uh that’s that’s a big drop off um there will be time for for ruch to get ready I I I don’t want to speculate on the injury because you you remember last week when Jaylen Harvey looked really bad like he was able to come back and practice this week he didn’t make the trip by the way um he’s he’s hurt but he’s not hurt hurt like long-term injury this one didn’t look great so Nish contact uh for Dona and that’s as a guy that t Frank you’ve noted All Season make kind of makes the Run game go yeah yeah and he looked this is the frustrating thing he looked as healthy as I’ve seen him in a while on the first play they pull him and he’s moving clean I didn’t see a whole lot of didn’t look sluggish it didn’t look like he was favoring anything didn’t look tentative and then on the play that was so there’s no such thing as a non-con play for an offensive lineman honestly but in terms of plays for an offensive lineman that was really standard and he just fell over yeah so yeah again not to speculate on the injury but that is a concerning thought to to have that it didn’t seem like anything landed awkward didn’t seem like there was any Twist of anything um obviously we’re gonna we’re GNA follow these things along and and James Frankin will be asked at some point about this uh in the in the week or so with Anthony Dano and we’ll have uh reporting at blue.com what we see at practice but it is concerning and the drop off as a pass protector in this game was what I was expecting and that didn’t come but also Minnesota’s pass rush isn’t Fierce those are good physical run Defenders they don’t have an elite Edge rusher they don’t have a a guy that has the tenacity of moves and speed that was really going to challenge a guy like Ruchi um in this game he did get better he didn’t I didn’t see him put his head down once at contact and that’s always a that’s a massive Improvement uh two kids one wife all PSU says besides the continued issues of the defense the defense getting held without the l22 I can’t tell if the linebackers are out of place for tackling because the tackling was not good n we talked about this a little bit earlier do you have anything you want to chime in here with the linebackers and that uh that persistent nagging feeling like they’re uh they they’re not playing great I thought Kobe made some plays I thought he made some good play like I don’t nothing stands out I I don’t know I 3.4 yards per carry for their running back with a long of 12 yards that’s not yeah I don’t see that as bad I I don’t know maybe maybe I’m wrong I I think that the defense made timely stops for for the most part uh right and again if Minnesota had if if Minnesota doesn’t have the nine points from the quick change and obviously the pat block isn’t like you’re kind of expecting them to score 16 points like that’s okay yeah we we all had them in the teens in our predictions for sure yeah and I’m not sorry guys I mean I mean again we’re on that same curve because Penn State’s linebackers are typically really good like I mean historically not just through Franklin but before that obviously historically great um but also we can acknowledge they need to be better for the playoff like that’s if you’re going to play at that level um they need to be better and I think that that’s probably what people are more so angling at like that you know you can get away with that stuff against some of the teams in the Big 10 they almost didn’t get away with it today uh against I thought it was pretty good team like I thought Minnesota was pretty good team um but yeah you got to be better for the uh the next level Nate why you why you laughing because I think like that’s that’s the whole point of all of this it is I I see the com I I get texts right I’m around Penn State fans it’s like oh you told this was the fourth ranked team in the country has there ever been a this season even preseason any point along the way where you were like man Penn State is a juggernaut like th this is a team yeah that wow is gonna blow you away no I I’m like no I’m sorry it’s just not but it’s a fair point there is something extremely valuable to be said for a team that just can find ways to win that that’s a big deal and this is a team that has done that repeatedly this season not right and I get it no game is a big game unless it’s Ohio State or the playoff I yep that’s fine but you know what all over college football today the week before weeks before that really good highly ranked teams lost to unranked teams on the road at home you name it Old Miss just did it today to yeah Florida is coming along that’s good but that’s also a team that has lost a bunch of games so this this lack of acknowledging what Penn State is which is not a dominant team has pieces has ingredients that those are good things that give it the potential to win games against anybody that they play but the whole deal this season is for them to just to get to the playoff just get there and then see what happens right they they’ve passed all of those tests I had this thought uh I think it was I don’t know maybe it was UCLA maybe it was Wisconsin somewhere in the middle of the season and I’m like what if this team wins every single game this year by 10 points or less what if that’s their fate is that they’re not going to blow anybody out this isn’t a team that is going to put it all together and become a juggernaut they’re just going to win every game they play other than the one that they obviously lost at that point because if they won that game they weren’t going to blow out Ohio State either so there was a future at one point where they just won every single game in a way that made everyone feel blah but they won every single game and here it is again like they had a two-e reprieve against two teams that were not good or schematically really bad matchups and uh now we’re back to it so if next week they blow out a team that is schematically a bad matchup or just talent-wise a bad matchup but then you get to the playoff they play a good team and they win by a close margin isn’t that just what we’ve seen all year isn’t that just the exact like run it back and like that yes they could lose that game they could have lost a couple of these games this year but they’ve won them and here we go like it go ahead no Minnesota is that that that is right I and again I don’t want to dive into Message Board drama but I you know I posited earlier in the week that this Minnesota defense would be hard for Penn State why because analytically they are in between Ohio State and Wisconsin right and it’s like oh well Penn State just destroyed Wiscon no they didn’t no they didn’t offensively Penn State did not destroy Wisconsin it got much better in the second half understood but good defenses have tripped up this offense yeah it’s it’s not the end of the world it is not a an indictment as though they don’t have tools they do have tools but you’re also there are fewer pieces to stop than it seems right yeah the way that everybody perceives this offense you think oh like well no it’s Tyler Warren it’s Nick single and and I don’t want to like Risk IR here but what KRON like what was the last play like truly when did it happen did he made it like a big play is that what you’re saying yeah yeah the direct snap touchdown run couple weeks ago how long ago was that maybe that was might have been last week for all I know he got a touchdown last week for sure because I remember they had to censor him on TV again um I I I I I agree with what you’re saying here Nate and again you look at the SEC in the Big 10 and I’m not trying to Perot this conversation but it is the truth of super conferences that are adding Texas Oklahoma Oregon Washington not this year um you know but these these teams from the the remnants of other conferences they took all of the good schools from the Pack 12 and the Big 12 and so when you stack conferences you will have good teams that have good elements but aren’t great teams beating up on each other and making the records look worse if Ruckers Lon made the point on the tailgate show if Ruckers loses that game and Minnesota beats uh Ruckers they’re seven and three in this game and it’s a different conversation and Pen state has a better quality win Ruckers did some fluky things and got a win and give them credit Minnesota lost that game you can’t like take away the fact that they lost that game but these are decent teams and Pense might face a team that has similar good and bad flaws in the playoffs we’re just not watching any games yet okay we’re here at a time though I do want to kind of get into one quick conversation though uh about what we saw earlier today I don’t know if either of you watched the game against uh Ohio State Indiana I just want to Qui conversation about comparing losses do you think that situation of now Penn State’s win does loss does that look better does that a better loss given another big 10 team went in and did not compete in the second half of that game um and does that matter going forward on the next Tuesday fits no it does not matter um it that’s true absolutely what you said is true I mean I do think that you know it maybe fluffs Penn State up a little but I don’t think it matters that much um there’s no again I said it before there’s no Transit of property here there’s no week toe continuity score like this this is we think these guys are good and I don’t think that Penn State’s game against Minnesota today changes all that much in the eyes of the uh committee and that’s ultimately what matters um you’re going to talk about how this filters out in front of them with Conference Championship games and more importantly Conference Championship game losers and uh how that how that works with that so I don’t think it matters all that much again Penn State’s only objective to win this football game and they did that and that’s kind of where Where I Come Away With It um you’re you’re not going to get the national respect but like the the we’re talking about two different things just like we talk about the bracket and the actual rankings as different things you’re talking about the committee’s thoughts and the media reaction and the media reaction does not matter it does not matter so I’m I’m very curious to see how this plays out um I I I don’t have all the scores on me but like winning that football game matters more than anything matters more than what Indiana did matters more than what Ohio state did and Ohio State look pretty darn impressive today um and uh certainly I think you keep going back to that and it’s really to me the the putting the resume up against Notre Dame who was beating Army right now um that loss I mean we’re almost at the point where we will dissect the one loss over the 11 wins and that’s really good for Penn State Nate uh same do you have a different answer I nailed the Dismount there didn’t I yeah it was so good thank you uh but whether people like it or not Indiana losing keeps the Big 10 championship in play for Penn State uh if and yeah I get it Ohio State’s not g to lose to Michigan stuff happens right it happens all the time see what happens if once the Big 10 Championship if the Big 10 Championship came into play um then Penn State in my my mind is an automatic five seed at worse if not right like that’s in a big 10 Championship scenario uh whereas if Ohio state gets the Big 10 Championship either way no matter what happens if Penn State isn’t in the Big 10 Championship they’re looking at six at best in the bracket but to me the the main learning point the thing that matters for Penn State in the immediate more than Penn State’s own score is teams behind Penn State losing is good for Penn State all of it no matter who it is doesn’t matter it well it’s just it’s just those teams would have needed to Leap Frog Penn State and something dramatic would have had to happen for that to happen for them to Leap Frog so yes Indiana has an opportunity to lead frog Penn State if they beat Ohio State they didn’t right uh Old Miss if they pull off some impressive wins Ken Le Ken Le frog Penn State they don’t have those opportunities Alabama’s not going to have that opportunity uh Notre Dame is not going to have that opportunity I don’t think Notre Dame beating Army is going to suddenly say to the committee oh well we got to take Notre Dame more seriously that’s just not how it’s going to work so just as Fitz said and this is me just adding on here but take care of business is number one for Penn State just win the game and then on top of that their rooting interest is debatable but if you want to go to the Big 10 champ championship game which I think they probably do like it or not if you get an opportunity to win a big 10 Championship you want that you want to have that um let alone the the idea that you get to the Big 10 Championship win it and then have a first round buy so I I I think there’s anticipation baked into those rankings like you talk about putting Indiana behind Penn State um you kind of are saying by saying that you’re saying that Indiana is going to lose to Ohio State like I think that there is some anticipation baked into those rankings um you know I I don’t know how much it changes things and I’m I’m very very curious to see where Indiana ends up I mean because they’ve had a wonderful season wonderful season up to this point um and then you put them on the field with the number two team in the country and it’s you know it’s pretty evident that they’re not there and uh given what we think we know about the committee probably three teams from the Big 10 Indiana in that 1112 spot that is up for like five other teams by the way A&M losing to Auburn in right now in the way that A&M does really well like they they always yeah so I’m very curious to see how that one goes um but no you’ve got more chaos left and Penn State has Maryland left so uh you avoid the uh Mike lockley game where you think that he’s gonna come in and say hey we we’re going all out we’re doing all this stuff that is gonna go crazy and like these are the guys that you weren’t good enough to go play there it’s the Nardi effect really you weren’t good enough to go play there so we’re gonna beat him and I don’t think that’s gonna happen but that’s that that’s what’s ahead of you that’s what you have to handle we have James Franklin’s press conference here on
