hello everybody Welcome to Robins TV extra time the show where we take an in-depth look at Bristol City’s results and performances from across the season today we’re reflecting on the oneall draw at home against QPR a game in which city had their chances but failed to make them count well joining us here in the studio for this one we’ve got two former city and QPR Strikers we’ve got leoy Senor and Tony Thorp with us welcome jents to this one um let’s get into it and just get your thoughts initially on on the match and we can show the stats I suppose are the underlying sort of uh picture from this match here on your screen now um leoy I’ll come to you first if I may City pretty dominant just look at that yeah sometimes the stats don’t tell the whole truth but they do in this instance 69% possession expected goals in terms of quality chances that they created just under two qbrs I’m surprised it’s at 0.18 to be to be honest 17 shots to their five um and then you look at that I mean they didn’t even in this position where they could be offside qbr not one offside in in the whole game but the most important stat is that one right at the top of your picture 111 which is absolutely incredible seeing how how much spital City dominated the game and how poor QPR were yeah and Tony you were sort of calling the game on on commentary alongside Alex stuff mean your thoughts on this I mean is this by Design from the way that QPR set up uh and the way that they wanted to play against us today uh a bit of both really I thought qpro were poor but um obviously you could see that they were that bad that a point would have been a good result but throughout the game and as you can see from these stats I’ve never seen this um that dominant of a performance from bristell City and like Leroy says it’s what it’s what’s at the top that’s important do you think QPR are sitting in their dressing room now worried about how bad they play no it’s what they’re taken from a game of football yeah absolutely it was certainly clear he will be happier I’m sure with the the point from from today um but let’s take a look at how City started because you both mentioned you know it was a bright positive start to the game from a city point of view yeah and I was kind of applauding a throwing early on in the game because from this position cam King throws it into the is in a nor side position but obviously can’t be offside from a throwing but too often City have thrown backwards and tried to just keep the ball but it just showed their intent this was in the first minute of the game look at them they just play playing forward it led to this set piece this free kick and there’s plenty of people in the box and ended up with this effort from and it’s MTI but it all started from that thring Forward Thinking forward playing forward that got them on the front foot m and there’s I think another look at this chance for ranice here he’s hit that pretty much as well as you could hope I suspect great strike head over the ball um he’s just unlucky there it’s not crept in the in the far post but yeah he’s kept his eye on it he’s kept it low and he was unlucky and like L Roy says it was a great start front foot which is so important for a manager um bristle City had all the the right signs early doors you know even just from picking up a throw into the 18 Yard Box pressing them high making sure they don’t get out and they don’t get comfort and they did all that in the first 25 minutes not an issue at all no absolutely and let’s take a look as well at some of the crosses um that city was sort of firing into the box because as much as they were having they weren’t really getting any Joy from them we’ll take a look at the sort of the first half set of crosses and we can compare them with the second but Leroy your thoughts on you know what we’re seeing here what wasn’t working what was work this was an early cross and as soon as I saw this I thought of Tony because he was here and I know it’s not only that but my first thought was what would Tony have done he’s got in a great position early cross from Nai world what would you have done I probably would have not shot I would probably gone to fate to shoot and then I have dragged it and then hit a left foot shot um yeah definitely I probably it’s a difficult one is it there to be hit there’s a body in front of him so I’d have to say no them kind of finishes once in once every eight years aren’t they when just catch it lovely and it flings straight into the top top bins but no I I would have probably chose a different option on that one absolutely and this one was just you got to get in a sixy box to score between the two of them it was cam pring and Anis MTI both stood outside the six-yard box one of them’s got to get across that Defender clear him out the way or get in front of him for the other one to come and finish you cannot be stood on your heels in in the box and you were just frustrated watching it aren’t you still are I’m frustrating seeing that back because you you live and die by your six-yard boxes a Senter It Forward what really frustrates me with a modern day footballer is they don’t their timing’s all wrong they’re already in there as a the balls coming in you’ve got to be arriving in the Box you’ve got to have movement there was none of that there in that six shot box it’s actually a good ball in Leroy great great balling it needs one we we would talk a long long time ago we would talk one you go get cross and the other one you hang out and you can pick the second balls up the bits and pieces whatever it may be none of that and I just feel that the movement amongst whoever plays up front for brisc and QPR and any other team in the championship if you watch them week in week out the movement’s not great and that’s not just me being a dinosaur the movement for me you have to be arriving in the Box as it’s coming in you don’t want to be already in the Box it’s like they’re looking for the perfect goal it is and you know what when you if I’m sat next to you in the box and we’re both in the Box I know I’m man of us in the wrong wrong position go I just need to get across that near post or get across that middle of the goal and what it does if I get across that middle of the goal if I don’t get it the defender’s got to come with me because he’s got to defend his goal he’s got to leave the furthest man I leave it a little Tapp for Tony you cannot be waiting in the Box you’re about timing but what you have to got to do is get them moving across the face of Defenders to move them out the way yeah let’s take a look as well at some of the crosses from the second half then because city starts having a bit more joy uh from some of these here we are then let’s let’s talk us through and maybe Tony just start us off the movement here what do you like well there’s three players which is good because you got to flood the box when whenever balls are coming in which is it shows you know their intent in the second half but the good thing about the first five or 10 minutes is they’re not thinking about anything here half a yard get the ball in obviously on not this particular occasion cuz he’s dancing around three or four players which is great that one wasn’t too bad cuz there was three or four players in there he’s probably just not picked that right pass he’s reverse one back but nothing wrong with that I’ve got no issues with that and here now get it into an area you’ll cause mayam you’ll cause people making mistakes which you’ll see in a minute with one or two efforts at goal yeah TR you’re absolutely right but what what I’d liked was the pass before the cross was just encouraging people to cross it you know you see there that was we’ll talk about that a little bit later but you saw the one before where Scott twine gave it to cam PR he said it was going cross it it wasn’t to his feet you know go and cross it and by giving him that ball in front of him you’re sending the message to the people in the Box to then make runs in the box that’s where the timing comes from and that’s what happened in the second half lot more early balls in the Box lot more people in the Box because that pass that initial pass wasn’t just in the feet G him a choice it was saying there go and cross it and another thing on that as well is if you’re not crossing the ball I ain’t making no runs yeah that’s me me that’s how I was mentally if you’re just going to keep possession of the ball and we don’t like like Le was just said and we’re not overlapping because we know it’s coming in I ain’t going in there and you become lazy and you think well it’s not coming in but if you if you do what leero just said which is maybe get a third man running and and you know it’s coming in you’re constantly going to find yourself in there that’s the difference it’s all about mental thing with with Strikers keep putting yourself in there and you’ll keep getting your opportunities absolutely well he’s not a striker so we can be so you know C some slack but we’ll just take a look back at that camping chance cuz both of you I mean Leroy in the studio you were on commentary said why is he not taking a touch why is he not bought that down talk us what could he or should he have done and you know cut him some slack given he’s not he’s not a forward uh I’ll start this one off he’s not a center forward so you got to give him you got to understand that but I think you’ve got to have that instinct as a center forward and I know for a fact I would have chested that down and probably swiveled straight the way um he gone with a header I would say a bad thing I think the center forward Center off sorry is put him off slightly he thinks he’s going to win it U we’ve all been there with that one and it’s just dropped to him but anybody else maybe maybe a nacky Wells or or an Armstrong or whatever may have just got a bit strong there and but you can’t be too AR on no you’re absolutely right I think I think as I said the before what you do you recognize the Flight of the ball first you know the center half’s going to miss it and instead of taking that step forward you take that step back you know and that’s what kind of then he has to head it but if he sees a fight of the book he’s missing that take a step back and then you control it forward and then no one can touch it no one can touch so the defender in front of is out the game the goalkeeper’s too far and and if they do touch you you get a penalty and you put people under pressure but that just to and again Cam he’s not he’s not a center forward but those things are just the you know they’re bigger chances than they looked at the time yeah yeah you wanted nacki to be on the end of that I’m sure but we’ll just take a look Leroy at at the shape the sort of you Keen to sort of highlight you know how City uh sort of approached the second half there was that momentum but just felt that perhaps you know bit congestion around the edge of the box which you’re going to highlight now I think for us yeah I try want to try to simplify this if they can stop it here just uh in in this picture here the ball the ball is in a wi position you can see 1 2 3 4 five six Bristol City plays this side of of the D now what I would like to see in this area of the pitch you can imagine when you train you’re playing training little 20 by 20 areas so City have got a 6V five uh on this side of the pitch I’d want to turn that into a 3v3 and then I I would say to these people over here your right side Midfield player your wide player and maybe one front player and that’s pushing it you sort out and I’ll give you space you sort out you either get across into me who is going to be in the box with the other two players or you get into an area where because I’m in away from the ball I’ve dragged Defenders away and you can get in towards goal and and I think you know we’re talking about it t what did you think I think they’ve overkilled this space there’s no space for anything is there there only SPAC is in them little triangles that you speak about which is fine further up the pitch but when you get into these areas as a center forward I don’t want to see seven or eight bodies in front of me I want to see little bits of spaces where I can make them little slight little runs and things like there’s nowhere for a center forward to run there the only ball he’s got is probably in between the two that he’s made that run there but you’ve got to be a good player to keep finding players in them spaces yeah and and from their stats he got an opportunity but the thing is all the qbr Defenders are all in positions where they want to defend you know and all they but they they’re good they they’re facing up the ball they can see the ball and you know what they’re happy with that they’re happy they’re happy they’ve defended it’s all in front of them they get a block off and it looks like but it’s not really an opportunity and I just City scored a great goal when they set up like that remember when Matt bird came out wi he played a little one two I think was my and Max St here one in a 100 that you score those sort of goals it’s got to be crosses in the box and creating areas in wi positions where you could where you can deliver quality well it’s not often we get two Strikers prolific ones at that as well in the studio so we can take a look at some of the chances and again get your thoughts on on what we could have done or should have done the first one I think to to highlight from the second half was this header from from nackie Wales um who you know he’s done everything right to get himself into that position he just dragged It Wide I mean just Tony maybe start with yourself what what do you think well he’s not giving up on it for a start you know it’s it’s not the greatest balling and and obviously the center off tried to chest it back which is which is ludicrous really but he hasn’t given it up he’s in the right areas and for me here he’s just got to be probably a little bit braver maybe I’m being a bit harsh with him looking back at that cuz the keeper all over him now and he hasn’t got the a massive lot of space Leroy to put that in as he really looking back at him if you look it’s just a quick one Bang Yeah reting to it isn’t he anything wrong if he hits the target he scores he’s done he’s done everything bar put it in the back of the netce been pretty brave really cuz normally Keepers come out and you get you know clout around the year for it let’s take a look just the mimti one that follows and Leroy perhaps we can get your thoughts and Analysis on this this I think when he slipped in if if I’m not mistaken let’s have a look this is brilliant from Zack Viner you know he he looks he just before the ball comes from he has a look and then allows M to take on the back foot and now now the goal’s open to him he does almost everything right the one thing I would have done and I wasn’t one who went for Corners cuz early in my career when I went for Corners I used to miss the target but I’d hit it at the goalkeeper’s legs as hard and low as possible from that from that situation Tony was better than me more accurate what would you done Tony I would have gone across SC me personally but um cuz then you’ve got to make the keeper make a save and then you may have somebody at the back post with an easy tapping he’s done he’s done everything right by just taking that deep breath at the last bit and that’s where the the top players in the world top Strikers that we’ve we’ve see you know week in week out that do find them corers cuz they go now it’s time to pick it up it just felt like every he did brilliant great little turn just felt like soon as it came he was erratic with it and that’s the difference between being at that end and and where where they are well one player perhaps full of composure who came on and made the difference in the second half was Scott twine who didn’t need long he only just came on to the pitch here he is being substituted on for you here cow at the point City had a set piece in what is probably Prime twine areas of the pitch and he comes on and what happens next I mean let’s just take a look here he goes um but Leroy I mean this is this takes some courage doesn’t it to come on and say I’m having that no no it doesn’t take courage when you’re the best free kick taker you come on and you take the free kick it’s about dominance and making sure that everybody around you knows that you are the best free kit taker what I hate is when the best free kit taker is talked out of it by other people and then someone goes and puts it over the crossbar um but he wasn’t he knows it I’m not sure if other players would have accepted it but he won the argument and and that’s why you know he’s been he’s been brought to the club and that’s why he’s he’s in the squad incidentally for all of his uh sort of work rate and uh Precision from the free kicks that’s his first goal from a set piece this season is third in in the league but it’s first from an actual set piece yeah it’s all about tech tech there and I agree with Leroy if you’re the best player and the best technical player for taking free kicks no you nobody else should take that whether he’s warm or not he’s got the quality and the technique to do it and I think I heard somebody blame the goalkeeper I actually think that’s a great freey I don’t think the goalkeeper can do a lot with that that was me probably his Wall’s probably not do a great job but I think he’s just probably left too much of a gap there but I still think if he’d have been slightly over he wouldn’t have got to that we’re going to finish with well qpr’s only chance of the game certainly up until this point I mean just during commentary you mentioned I think 55th minute before QPR even had a touch in the city box extraordinary um from them but they did manage to find an equalizer um and it’s just one of those it’s it’s just a moment of Madness isn’t it really I couldn’t see him getting a shot on target let alone this but it just transpired that Paul Smith found him in this situation where back has made a poor decision uh by the way it’s still a one wonderful finish yes it’s an unbelievable finish middle of goal um bad celebration not a bad celebration but it comes from City’s his corner and it’s C Fring his last man he goes in makes the right decision but it’s just a poor header back in and it’s put in behind by Varan and then he’s made a really poor because he’s nowhere near it and we’ll discuss whether he could bring the player down but he could easily have taken another touch I think if he takes another touch that brings the lights of bird and N you’re trying to get back into the equation cuz they get between him and the ball it more difficult it’s a wonderful finish turnone isn’t it it’s a great finish uh without being overly harsh with oi um he’ll be because he’ll be gutted he knows he made a mistake but I’m I’m more concerned about how many players bristell City have got up for the corner I mean I think they had one person back prings headed it back into an area that’s got retrieved from one of the QPR players he’s only played a slight ball into someone they’re they’re in and I’m not in but it’s one basically he was ahead of the the center off that should not be the case you can still leave one or two back and do your job you still got a football match to win for how bad Queens Park Rangers have been today they’ve got a point Le is right that is a that is if you tried that I don’t think you’d score six out of 10 or five out 10 yeah no whether there’s no pressure or not he’s still got to keep his head down I personally would have took another touch and then maybe had a go he’s gone NOP I’ve got round you and I’m just going to keep me head down but it’s a great it’s a great and you know what and when you’ve been in the game and when you haven’t had a touch you haven’t had a kick of the ball you’re just chasing around you you a forward just running around you got no energy for him to find that energy to find that finish it was exceptional yeah well final word from you both uh up next is West Brom next Sunday final game before Christmas day um West Brom at the moment you know they seem to be up there in and around the playoff spots um they went through a long phase of drawing games but nonetheless the Hawthorns is a a tricky place to go um Tony your thoughts yeah I mean they’ve had a lot of draws West Brom and and they had a great result last week against com I think they beat him 3-0 at home um so it’s that time of year isn’t it this is a crunch time there’s half a season to go uh who wants it you know who wants to roll their sleeves up and go to West Brom and go and get a nice three points or do you take the negativity of today’s result not performance into that who knows but yeah there’s it’s crunch time now isn’t it it is it is crunch time um firstly City will play worse than that this season and win a lot of games this year it’s great point and so if need to think about anything take that level of performance through to the H THS and that I’ll give him a great chance of getting a result because that was a really good level of performance didn’t get the result yeah but next time it might absolutely well that’s all we’ve got time for here on Robins TV extra time Tony and Leroy thank you very much for giving us your thoughts um as we say we’ll be back next week uh for the trip to the Hawthorns City take on West bromage album that’s Sunday December 22nd we’ll be live here on Robins TV for subscribers from 2:30 we’ll see see you then bye-bye [Applause] [Music]
