the Bengals needed a win today to keep their season alive and keep any realistic chance of making the postseason and well they lost another close game hi again everyone I’m James arpine alongside Alise Jesse welcome in to Cincinnati Bengals talk here at payor Stadium where the Bengals fall to the Steelers 44- 38 and it’s another one- score loss you could start there it’s another close game against a winning team it’s another game where the defense just completely falls on its face after a bright spot to start the game I mean there there’s so many angles there’s so many things to do after you watch this video by the way make sure you check out with Joe burrow had to say what T Higgins and Jamar Chase and everybody else had to say uh because it’s all here on TBT where should we start at least Jesse what’s the the number one thing coming out of the locker room which we just did that is on your mind right now as the Bengals fought a 4 and eight on the season well first of all welcome to the funeral for the 2024 Cincinnati Bengals season because they knew they talked all week they knew they had to win this game and instead the Defense Forces one single Punt and they allow the Steelers and AFC North team to drop 44 points in their house that is trash to me and I’ve said this week one I said the defense looked like trashh at Le they’re nothing if not consistent yeah are we not no you’re right I was worried about the team week one you are worried about the team week one we are definitely worried about this team after week three and at this point it just seems like it’s part for the course yeah I think a couple of things one the defense and i’ I’ve tried to say this all season on and off it’s like ah I don’t expect you to be the Steel Curtain right but can you make some big plays and they made a big play to start the game the cam Taylor the cam Taylor Brit picked six and so at halftime they’re down 27-21 cam Taylor Brit had a pick six Joe broy completed 80% of his passes in a touch down Chase Brown was averaging 7.6 yard per carry and had a touchdown so it checks a lot of boxes whatever box you want to you check and they were down 27-21 and I’m like oh well this isn’t good and then the game gets away from them it’s 41-24 they rally back it’s not enough I just it’s it’s a flawed team and it’s there there are a bunch of guys that stand out goo Stone again bad angles poor tackling the going back to the first quarter so the Bengals take a seven-point lead George Pickins I it could be George Pickins it could be slim Pickins it could be Elise Jesse it could be anyone out here catching passes probably scores I I mean it’s a 17 Yer and he I don’t know if he got touched and it’s because goo Stone took a really really bad angle geometry class or football geometry I mean that that irks me because that’s been something that’s happened all all year long it’s so interesting talking to some of the guys on defense because you talk to Mike Hilton and he’s like we just got to make more plays and it’s like yeah we’ve we’ve heard that all season like yes love M Hilton respect him but we we keep hearing the same thing and it’s feeling really ridiculous asking the guys questions because you keep hearing the same thing and you keep getting the same bad results like they keep talking one way but I don’t know if it’s not the right position I don’t know if they are maybe gone is confused maybe doesn’t feel comfortable in what he’s being asked to do I don’t know I do know one thing they do not have the vocal leadership that they need on the sidelines at least they might have some of that in the locker room with Mike Hilton and Joe burrow and Jamar Chase and guys like that but on the sideline they don’t have anybody sitting there holding these guys to a different standard yeah I think it’s wild to think about but you you you look at this defense and where it was a few years ago and and I think back to 2020 DJ reer had just gotten here and it was two games in they had gotten crushed in Cleveland like they couldn’t stop the run and I mean defensively they got crushed one score loss by the way in the division weird how four years later we’re talking about the same thing but he’s like oh this is not going to happen and I I don’t really get that like what guy is playing at that level that can also say that Trey is playing at that level isn’t that vocal leader no one else on the defense Mike Hilton included is playing at that level I pick on Gino Stone because they signed him to be like Jessie bat’s light and he’s not even been light and so when when that happens it is what it is offensively Cody Ford by the way got the start Jordan battle got the start on defense they made some changes I thought it was interesting I didn’t know if it was desperate maybe maybe not maybe it’s just like bringing ping pong tables back but they tried something new today and I don’t know I didn’t think the offensive line was that much better I thought Joe burrow was under pressure the two strip sacks one he held onto the ball a little too long probably I don’t care that’s what he does that’s how he got the touchdown to Jamar Chase too that that that first touchdown that put them in position um it gave them a 14-7 lead like Joe’s doing a ton yeah I’m okay with the interception the strip sack’s not on him the second one certainly not on him you couldn’t see it I I in I just came out of his press conference and by the way we posted that it’s up right now it’s like I think he’s resign like I think he knows and and it’s weird to see someone having arguably his greatest season like yeah I know we’re not good enough and he does he didn’t come out and say that but you could just tell and that’s a really weird I don’t know I feel weird thinking about it that way because this is a guy that you say never count out but it’s over they’re 4 and eight he can’t overcome a defense that gives up 44 points in a game 37 37 because of the strip side yeah yeah I guess yeah you’re right he can’t overcome that how is he supposed to he’s scoring 30 plus points a game and he’s still losing this is a man who has overcome injury time and time again then he puts on weight because he knows he’s going to get hit so he puts on weight to kind of act as a barrier I guess against some of that and he’s not going he’s not going yting on the bye he’s staying in town he’s here early he’s here late he is constantly working he’s constantly getting better and I wonder if he is nauseous watching when he’s on the sideline the other side of the ball and how that plays out I wonder what he’s thinking but at the same time you’re like if a veteran I wonder this personally if a veteran on defense messes up who is going to call that guy out like Mike Hilton has said that he calls guys out but you’ve got guys who were acquired in free agency like Tino Stone who maybe doesn’t have the right footing to call somebody out because he’s brand new to this team or maybe you have new guys like Jordan battle is not new new but he’s new enough to where he maybe doesn’t feel comfortable calling out a veteran if they mess up do you know what I mean he produced enough and he hasn’t produced enough to do that either yes yes and I don’t know if they have enough guys to be able to have the super difficult conversations that have to be had on the defensive side of the ball yeah because you have like Von Bell can be a vocal leader but he’s not playing at that level anymore only going to respect you if you are playing at that level if you are playing at a high level then they will respect what you have to say they will respect if you have criticism for them but if you’re not no doubt but if you’re not then you’re just talking trash and you stink yes exactly and that’s that’s where they are though that’s the position that this defense is in unfortunately no doubt I mean when you said the one punt I was like your eyes your facial expression you’re like I literally went through every possession and like this isn’t this isn’t the the greatest show on Turf offense here this is Russell Wilson who had only thrown for 400 yards twice twice in his career before today uh this is a Steelers offense whose number one weapon is George Pickins talented but a head case we saw that today and they went for 520 right here 520 total yards like defensively huge issue offensively good enough Joe would say not good enough you can’t have three turnovers which I totally get that too and that’s what you get you get another loss 4 and8 another loss in the division uh there will be no playoff conversation I said it on end of the jungle on Tuesday night last Tuesday night like hey you got to earn Equity you got to build that back up with Equity that not no building it up anymore it uh it’s over at 4 and8 but uh yeah the Bengals tough sledding from here at least I think it’s also extremely disappointing not just for fans but for players as well I mean coming out of a buy and you’re four and seven going into the buy you would think that maybe there would be you would see enough um you know changes is not to the coaching staff but just in the scheme like maybe some just just some something different yeah than we’ve been seeing you know what I mean like I feel like I feel like I’m like watching a crazy show here like I just keep watching the same crap over and over and over again it’s on tired of it yes I’m so tired of it I thought we were going to see some type of adjustment we were going to see some kind of fire we we’re going to see something interesting now the Joseph osai blocked field goal attempt special teams Darren Simmons that was great I enjoyed seeing stuff like that I enjoyed seeing cam Taylor Brit get the interception in the P six but outside of that it’s like there wasn’t enough it’s leaving a lot to be desired and I’m tired of saying that I tweeted something on the during the Bengals first possession and I I told you about this when we were coming down because before the game whether it was on lock on or whether it was here I said multiple times I need more nasty I need these guys to be nasty in the trenches you’re going to have to be nasty because the scheme stuff it’s hard it’s hard to make changes even during the buy like I I I love it I love the idea of it I also think that the defense is kind of what it is right now but can you be a little nastier can you hit hard all of those things right can you have that nasty that that extra Edge that you know the Steelers are going to have and that you know the Ravens are going to have and the Chargers had uh a week and a half ago now um two weeks ago geez a p two weeks ago and Joe burrow gets bumped twice on a false start M TJ watt bumps him Nick herb herbick bumps him no one does anything that irks me that really irks me that’s the nastiness thing and by the way AEM Davis gther on the the very next possession that the defense is on the field and he gets flagged for defensive pass interference CU he just lights up Calvin Austin and I was like that’s what I want yeah fine you’re a little overaggressive and you push the envelope a little bit and you get a penalty fine I’d much rather that than TJ watt bumping into Joe burrow I want to hear your take on this because I did ask an offensive lineman about this about Joe getting bumped and I specifically referenced TJ watt bumping Joe burrow and how we’ve seen that multiple times this season and it seems like no one’s doing anything about it and this player said what we do is we try to handle it between the whistles because we don’t want to put the team we’re trying to put the team first we don’t want to take a penalty and we don’t want to be behind the sticks after hitting him and I’m like well what about if you just do it once and send the message and he was like yeah but what if that leads to something that we can’t get out of do you know what I mean so yeah it makes sense like I understand the logic behind that but then you see then you see how the Jaguars player players react if Trevor Lawrence get gets knocked out yeah like clear difference between those the answer is simple do you want to be the kid on the schoolyard that’s worried about the teacher or do you want to be the one that doesn’t give a damn about the teacher if you’re in a fight which one because the one that’s worried about the teacher loses every time I promise you every single time so if you’re worried about the punishment fine and that doesn’t mean go vontes perfect I’m not saying that I’m saying if TJ watt bumps Joe bur on the second play from scrimmage headbutt like not headbutt him but like put your helmet on his helmet and let him know that that is not going to happen today period it’s like little things like stuff that like if I went to the playground right now would be done in pickup like real simple stuff who cares about the whistle that’s not it and and so yeah that irks me too anyways we’ve gone really long the Bengals season well it’s really short shorter than we thought it could potentially be coming into this year they’re 4
