well it’s been a bit of a wild season in the NHL with a handful of teams really not living up to expectations and some others kind of hitting their stride at this point I’m Kate peton and I’m joined by Dave panota and we’re GNA break it all down here on the latest on the fourth period presented by CCM hockey all right well Dave today I’m here at Bridgestone Arena the Predators are getting set to open a four game home stand and that starts with the New York Rangers but they’ve been a team that we’ve talked about a lot recently because we’ve heard Barry troutz has been active on the phone having conversations with other teams if we take a look at what they can do in terms of trade as of today they’ve got 7.45 million in cap space what do you think Barry’s actively involved in and what could he actually do with that amount of cap space well it certainly K gives them a lot of flexibility they they would love to and we we’ve talked about this I think since the beginning of the season that they would like to address their two-c position that still is unchanged they would love to be able to bring in a second line Center to stabilize the top six but they don’t just want to bring in a rental that’s not going to happen based on their positioning and they don’t just want to bring in somebody that’s 31 32 years old and is going to start getting towards the tail end of his career they want to bring in somebody in the mid 20s maybe on the earlier stage of mid 20s that can be with this core and build with them for years to come and that comes with a big price tag and those types of deals are more likely to occur in the offseason than in the middle of the season and the way they’re playing now currently as we’re doing this last in the Western Conference nobody’s throwing any lifelines no life preservers are coming Barry’s way so he’s got to be creative and looking at what he has now if they continue this trend a guy like gusta Nyquist will be on the Block he’s on an expiring contract they’ll look to move him as a rental for another team but Barry still wants to insulate the rest of this group with the right pieces he’s going to be looking at those moves but also almost as much looking at bringing in some key pieces to fit the core well it was a slow start but lately they’ve expressed many of the players Stephen stamp coost as well saying you know we’re getting there we’re we’re not getting the results that we want but they had a good game versus Colorado 39 shots on goal they were creating a little bit more they just couldn’t seem to get a bounce and we have seen the change with stamp Coast playing two games already between forsburg and marsho so they are making some moves within and uh Roman yosi’s been out since December 10th but he did skate again this morning so we could see him back as early as tonight against the Rangers so they’re doing their best with what they’ve got for now yeah they are I mean you’re grasping at things I mean you know people are joking that tonight’s game between Nashville and New York the loser I mean they may both end up making coaching changes based on how they’re playing but um I I think for the most part you know both of these teams are focused on roster type movements they’re making adjustments Nashville as you said re adjusting their first line lately so you want to build a little bit of momentum there and see how things kind of roll out uh from from their side of things but um you know they’re looking the Rangers are looking for other reasons I I think the game tonight will dictate a lot of what New York does in the immediate if they get shellac tonight the Rangers I mean all all Hands-On deck they may have not have another choice but to make a big type of move well I’ll be here watching the game and and no doubt that’ll be a conversation Topic at some point later this week okay if we stay in the West Elliot fredman stirring the pot a little bit with a hypothetical trade situation and you know Vancouver fans were right on it Alias Pon to the Sabers in exchange for Dylan cousins and Bowen byon probably not realistic however the Canucks are without Philip per ponic so maybe there is a reality that a trade happens between these two teams but it’s for bow and Barum to bolster the back end what do you think of the reality of that yeah uh free definitely set Vancouver on fire with with that one and he acknowledged it too he had to go on some local stations to talk about it and try to cool the fires reiterating it was just the proposed hypothetical trade uh but he acknowledged and something we reported yesterday as well that Vancouver and buffalo have had uh trade talks and they seemed to be centered around Vancouver’s interest in Bow and Byrum that seems to be genuine now whether this evolves into this big big Blockbuster type deal obviously we we’ll have to wait and see and and maybe bre is on to something uh because Buffalo had expressed interest in py last season before he signs his extension but we do know that Vancouver is active right now trying to get a top four defenseman Byam is a guy um that would certainly fit that role and for a team like Buffalo the vultur are going to come flying in and try to pluck away some pieces here in hopes that you’re desperate to do something we’ll see how that conversation continues but we do know Vancouver without question wants to bolster their top four even with honic back in the lineup they still want to stay that back end at some point this season all right let’s check in in the East one last team Ottawa Senators we’ve talked about them for a variety of reasons but now they’re getting hot they’ve won seven of their last 10 they’re in a wild card spot in the East so is this a time when Steve stos commits to those playoff hopes and tries to add a little more to his roster and if he does where is he looking to add yeah he certainly would like to but you see what happens when you have a little bit of patience when you allow a brand new coach to come in with his new system and structure and a goalie to get acclimated to his new Decor it takes a little bit of time sometimes for teams to get rolling this is where the Senators expected to be this season in the Wild Card discussions and they’re right behind Boston for third in the Atlantic so if they could keep this momentum going they’re they’re going to potentially push even further yes as you mentioned Kate stos would like to address a couple areas on his team the defense without question if they could bring in another team looking for a top four but if they could bring in somebody that has more of a stay-at-home physical defensive prowess kind of mentality that’s what they would like to bring in Ottawa they need somebody to kind of shut down and stabilize things on that back end and if you could fit the top four that’s perfect for what they’re looking for in addition to that they need another Winger they would like to bring in another offensive scoring Winger at some point this season they’ve got a little bit of cap space to play with anything big would likely result in somebody coming out of the lineup but OT was at both ends they’re not pressing to make a deal now but if something falls into their lap later on after the calendar year perhaps after four nations it looks like that’s something that stos would like to do all right well we’ve got less than a week till the holiday break so we’re going to see who can be patient and who’s gunning for that shiny object ahead of the holidays for sure thanks so much for joining me Dave and thank you for tuning in it’s been the latest on the fourth period and it’s presented by CCM hockey
