basketball uh 80 to 45 over Marshall we both thought that they were going to blow the doors off Marshall that came to fruition I think we both thought the scoring was going to be higher uh can’t really score all that many points when you’re shooting 48 shots from the floor I mean you have 33 three free throws but subie Marshall came out with the strategy of we’re going to we’re going to uh come out and Pummel you uh specifically we’re going to come out and pumble Caleb first um what what did you see from Purdue in this game that you can take away as a as a positive because for me it’s just this was kind of just a ho hum game yeah we thought this was going to be a Get Right hoam game for Purdue especially after that Marquette lost but Conor lineup change lineup change from Mr Matt painer cam Heidi miles cvin come in and I think I know Greg has been clamoring for that and you mentioned last episode on on the preview some Purdue fans might have just been like yo wilberg take a hike uh he he moved to the bench so did Jakari uh so you enter cam Heidi and miles cven and they both played well again I know it’s Marshall but maybe Matt painer was saying look I’m gonna re I’m gonna shift some things around there’s the perfect game to do it and let’s see what they look like in a game against Marshall and maybe if if this was a comprehensive performance we’ll continue to see this moving forward cam Heidi didn’t miss literally like he he hit all of his shots which I think were threes he hit all of his free throws culvin I think went four or six they both finished with 13 they look good and and if I’m a Purdue fan it’s probably refreshing even this early into the season so lineup change man good for uh Purdue and their fans I suppose I also love Connor that Braden Smith only shot the ball four times you didn’t end up with any points um I think he genuinely said look with this lineup change he was like look I’m going to my fault I’m going to just not care like you do it you guys get it done um so he only shot the ball four times zero points those were my two big key takeaways the uh the lineup change in Braden yeah I mean Bron Smith didn’t didn’t shoot or didn’t get a single point only shot the four times still had the biggest plus minus on this team still played the most minutes on this team had nine assists to one turnover darari Harris to to his credit you know a lot of freshman sometimes when you put push them to the bench after being in a starting lineup um it might take a few games if it if they get there at all and being like okay I’m going to accept this Jakari Harris only took three shots scored six points uh two of those came from the three throw stripe four assists just to just one turnover played the second most minutes on this team uh had the highest plus minus on this team I know a lot of that came in the second half but uh to me I think it just shows the maturity of Harris that he was able yeah I mean plus 23 in the second half of his plus 29 but uh a lot of it it just shows the maturity of Jakari Harris um willberg only played nine minutes in this game so I think we’re seeing the we’re seeing the beginning of the end went three of three um but only had three rebounds three fouls uh to me I think the the story of this game with the lineup change was that it looked good against against Marshall but it looked good um I’m not going to say that I think it was otherworldly defensively because I do still think like having wilberg out there being his size near the rim like helps you with ways on the defensive end that you can’t really get with a smaller lineup but certainly I felt like it looked better offensively uh and it wasn’t just like Fletcher lawyer only made one shot from the floor so I think he I think him and Braden were like just they were like exhausted parents being like you kids figure it out yeah like we’ve done you guys and tkr has been amazing and he was in this game as well but I think him and and Braden were just like figure it out Children yeah yeah and I and I also think I mean you you can do that they they lost minutes in the second half because this game was over before the half um the reason why I like this lineup and I know Greg’s been petitioning for this lineup is that this team almost reminds me of like and this being someone with like a Gaga right it almost reminds me of like the past two years at Gonzaga where you’ve had options down low to maybe be like a rim protector improve your defense but it would handicap what you do so well offensively um that I just feel like Purdue needs to run there we’re just going to score more points than you because Purdue has still with this lineup has the potential to be a top five offense in the country in terms of efficiency and if you’re a top 40 defense because of it as opposed to like a top 20 defense so be it because if you’re running out will Berg and and even to a certain extent Caleb first for 25 30 minutes a game together in like actual critical games I feel like you’re handicapping your ability to score points and your defense still isn’t really good enough to to do that um even if you do have the the extra size down low so you know I thought Raleigh bur just looked good I think he has the team in rebounds which was kind of funny Off the Bench in 13 minutes um it was I mean it was just they were Marshall was overmatched yeah right and they went up against a pissed off Purdue yeah and um I mean look turnovers I think were a f function of the smaller lineup for for Marshall and Purdue didn’t turn the ball over I mean they turned it 13 yeah but 13 like a normal 13’s like for a normal basketball team like to me 12 is the line so maybe above average but like 13 means they’re averaging double digit turnovers though like 11 I think right now Connor and that in in my preview I said this is like turnovers are an issue that you don’t get fixed in one game that’s been obvious over the course of anyone watching basketball but obviously here in this case as well okay so if 12 is your my line of like where I am I’m okay with 12 even for like a championship level team yeah I think so okay I don’t know it’s I think I think Purdue can get that under to single digits I I’m a little concerned about the turnovers yeah because I mean I think last year last year Yukon was pushing 10 turnovers a game I I think it just depends I mean obviously you don’t like 13 but they also played their bench a ton um if you’re looking like deeper at the numbers right they they the the key rotation it was like four in their starting lineup coffin Ren had two each of the guards pleter La lawyer Bren Smith had one a piece um CJ uh uh Jakari Harris only had one it was like The Bigs and guys like Jace rail Caleb first um who had multiple so I I’m not Raleigh burges had multiple so like I’m not too too terribly concerned um hey real quick can we can we take a perspective from Marshall’s side uh I loved I know you said they tried beating them up but I also loved that they were just jacking it from three uh they shot almost half of their field goals from three they didn’t really go in uh they only ended up with 45 points but I mean I feel like Marshall came out and was like look we are just going to try and do some sort of shock and awe tactic uh and see if it works out for it didn’t and that’s okay at least they tried something but they also shot the ball extremely poorly from the free throw line I think they finished at like 50 some perc from the line yeah and they turned the ball over and Purdue just dominated the pain I’m sorry I just wanted to give Marshall credit it didn’t work but they tried something which was just get them up yeah I mean any like I’ve been to Mackie um for I was and gr it was a Purdue Indiana game so like it was especially loud there but uh you’re not going to go in there as like a team like Marshall and handle the noise while trying to hit a ton of free throws and threes I mean it’s just it’s the chances of that happen are particularly low um so I I just like credit to them for I mean I guess it was it was probably a buy game I haven’t even looked at whether or not it was actually a buy game but credit to them for going to Mackie uh thank you good night like yeah we saw this coming honestly especially after Marquette loss there was no standout performance I mean Nate Martin was okay but he was also like he was like particularly uh egregious when it came to just playing physical and fouling Purdue um but not a lot you can take away from this game I think in the long run I do think it just shows that do you know they can they can play uh an ugly style of basketball if they need to they can play small um to counteract maybe some of the offensive issues that they have when they play big uh if you look at it from a points per game perspective and I just want to check right they had 1.19 uh points per possession in this game which was more than they had against Marquette um it was just less than what they had against Alabama uh so I think it was like their second worst points per possession of the Season no it was more than what they had against Northern Kentucky and I think more than yeah so it was their third word it was like right in the middle of of what they’ve done um points per possession wise so it was more than Marquette obviously and then more than uh Northern Kentucky um it it it’s it is what it is they shot the ball well when they were able to shoot uh they got to the line 33 times uh I I shiver knowing that they have to play Wisconsin after was what what Wisconsin and and Arizona did in that game from from a free throw attempts perspective I mean that might the refs might have just been on one that night but uh I don’t know it’s they are I believe now the highest ranked Big 10 team in the country and per kenpom at 16 um after what we saw with Illinois against Alabama uh we haven’t really seen anything from Michigan um Indiana I’m still not entirely bought into uh Ohio State like dropped that one against Texas A&M yeah UCLA has looked ho hum like Purdue right now to me is still the front runner in the Big 10 uh and I think they just ran into a buz saww cat so good game um good game all around I it’s it’s good to see that Braden Smith can facilitate and like I felt like earlier in the season he was really trying to like force his shots um and while you would like more than four attempts and more than zero points from him uh it’s good to know that he’s also like he can recognize that look miles cvin and cam Heidi are good Shooters alongside Fletcher player uh Jakari Harris can do a little bit of ball handing and facilitating as well like he Bren Smith doesn’t have to do everything I think braen I think Braden Smith is so Advanced and so good and has shown enough in his career where if he has this type of game I your first thought should not be oh man he wasn’t aggressive like he’s doing this on purpose really I think he’s had he’s he’s built up enough credibility for us to say oh this was a this wasn’t a quiet night this is just Braden Smith trying to get others involved and taking this a purposeful step back I really think so uh last point I’ll make Connor fun stretch coming up for Purdue uh they got NC State and San Diego I like I I know Purdue is probably a better traveling fan base than NC State but like that’s those two teams in San Diego that’s interesting uh then they got Texas A&M in Indianapolis pseudo home game for them and then uh Auburn in Birmingham which is a pseudo Road game that’s those are going to be fun fun matchups I know they host Maryland too but that’s in Mackey uh but fun stretch coming up for Purdue and I’m sure we’ll get all the uh previews and Recaps for them yeah yeah it’s a fun stretch I think this is where you need to see like Braden Smith needs to start getting finding good shots um he is still only shooting 38% from the field on the season uh which as a starting point guard who is also probably your top scoring option um you just that’s that’s just unacceptable for a team as talented and I guess not deep this year but like as talented as Purdue with some of the talent they have coming off the bench as well um so I think you want to see more from a scoring an efficient scoring perspective from Braden Smith and I think maybe like the 0a four against Marshall was a was a function of like he just doesn’t have his shot right now um cuz we saw it in a couple of games so far this year where he he hits the first shot I think Marquette it was like he hit the first shot and then took that same shot like five more times and missed all five um we’ve seen him I think like against Alabama he was hitting big shots when they would let him like get the wide openen mid-range off a screen but he was also not shooting particularly efficiently in that game either um you need especially if you want him to be continue to be like a massive scoring threat like you need him and have the gravity um on the offensive end to like open up the floor for everyone else like 38% is not going to cut it not gonna St it’s not gonna stay 38% but I think that’s if there’s one thing with Braden Smith that you’re worried about it’s like he’s been okay shooting threes he’s been awful awful on the interior scoring the ball partially because of his SK size but a lot of those shots are jumpers so we’ll see um we’ll see CJ Cox also isn’t shooting the ball particularly well you expect that from a freshman uh everyone else kind of is so I think it’s just the pler lawyer shooting 62% from three on the season so like move over Kobe brass’s yeah he’s he’s oh I don’t know man hang on now hang on now Kobe PR I think he’s Miss like four times or something Preposterous this season yeah and you know what his threes look good they don’t touch Rim uh we should at some point maybe a mid-season Three-Point Shootout between lawyer and uh Kobe Brea H that was that was almost entirely a joke Kobe BRZ is on another planet when it comes to three point sorry I got defensive there for a second it’s early for us guys I’m sorry I I didn’t catch the sarcasm yeah no uh no but I like I just last point for me I I like this I like this small lineup I understand that it has its defensive issues at times it didn’t against Marshall because it’s Marshall but I think if you’re trying to maximize what this Purdue team can do this small lineup is probably the way to do it and look good for Purdue fans it’s almost like getting a shiny new toy everyone loves lineup changes man like everyone loves tinkering with lineup changes I mean for that Arizona Duke game I was really I was like oh man Kos is in the starting lineup over Tob aaka that didn’t pan out very well for me this one did for Purdue fans but everyone loves a shiny new toy and you know what it was a fun first game Everyone likes a shiny new toy even me for my team that lost by 14 at home to Duke yeah uh we just need to change the batteries in toy hopefully that’s not a cautionary tale for Purdue
