in macki Arena a place where dreams go to die uh C this is an interesting matchup between the ninth best offense Purdue and the ninth best defense Maryland in college basketball Maryland profile wise is a scary opponent for Purdue because they are capable of doing many of the things things that Marquette and Penn State did successfully in produce two losses this season Maryland enters this game 8-1 19th in the country Kevin Willard appears to have really wred the ship from what went wrong last year he’s got a top 40 offense and top 10 defense they play fast they turn teams over ninth best team in the country at forcing turnovers and there is a whole lot of green on their profile as a team across the board in all categories on offense and defense right now uh and they have freshman Superstar and Derek Queen at the center spot which is probably the scariest spot for Purdue right now to see an imposing Superstar from Maryland beat Ohio State by like 80 this week Purdue did not play well against Penn State emotionally what do you think that means for this game on both sides uh well for for one I think being Ables for Maryland to get back sorry not for Maryland for Purdue to get back in Mackey that’s that’s on one hand is doing wonders for them if they could have got back in Mackey against a team without the profile that Maryland has that would have been the the real like I we need that um quietly Maryland has just been like really good this season like the villain Nova win at the time we like uh that’s like a really ugly win they grinded it out Villanova is kind of starting to play better basketball like this picked up a pretty good win at home against Cincinnati marquette’s a really good team they were in that game they easily could have won that game and look jacobe Gillespie has been coming along he had 23 points in his first Big 10 game Derek Queen is a double double machine I’ll tell you right now he’s looking at tkr like he’s food and he probably will be food uh and then they have other pieces on this team I think also I I’m G try to not choke when I say this Greg um Kevin Willard like made some adjustments like he he he benched DeShaun Harris Smith and I think he did he did it rightfully so and you know desan Harris Smith hasn’t done anything great in any of these games but like he’s done like little mini bench contributions here and there and other guys have stepped into the starting lineup and been able to play well like Rodney rice is he went oh six from three last game but he’s a guy who’s actually shown the ability to shoot the basketball um and S Miguel has played well on top of that so this Maryland team is uh you know pretty impress I was pretty high on the turps coming into the season um and we’ll get into some matchup stuff here but uh it’s it’s one team that right now given what Purdue just did on the road you don’t necessarily want to see a team of Maryland’s profile yeah for any Purdue fans that aren’t super familiar with Maryland’s Personnel we can get into that a little bit but um Willard it’s it’s very icky to say allow Willard has been great this year because it was funny and everybody enjoyed dunking on Willard last year and just in general has the track record of a guy going back to his time with Sean Hall where like I don’t think anyone really wants to buy Kevin Willard as like a top 20 team in the country given who he is as a coach but um yeah he he started the year with deshun Harris Smith and starting lineup desan Harris Smith is like a just a liability offensively he can’t really dribble he can’t shoot at all he’s a very good Defender which is why he was in the starting lineup but the former five-star recruit cre just has not put it together as an offensive player he has one game in double figures this season uh and it came after he flipped to a bench roll and the guy they put in for deshan Harris Smith is Rodney rice who has been Sensational Rodney rice had 26 points in the first half of a game earlier in the non-conference and what it what it’s done is basically make the recipe for Maryland night tonight A really Dynamic point guard in jacobe Gillespie who they got from the portal surrounded by two three and D guys in Miguel and Rodney rice and then one of the best front courts in the country and Julian rice and Derek que or Julian Ree and Derek Queen and Julian Rees was a former all big 10 like honorable mention guy maybe a third teamer if he was the only featured big on this team he would be one of the superstars in this conference he’s not he’s taken a step back intentionally so to open the door for this very very special Lotter rep pick talent in Derek Queen who has done a bit of everything I mean you’re a dere Queen guy so I’ll let you speak on him but he’s got a bunch of games with 20 points this year he had a 20 rebound game he has games with five assists he has games with two blocks he has games with three steals I mean he doesn’t do it all every single night but for the Purdue fans out there that have stood their ground on tkr is the best big in this conference this approving spot because I don’t think there’s anything on a basketball court tkr is better at than Derek Queen and this is going to be a pretty tough match up against a true seven foot big man with NBA skills right Derek Queen the the skill level that he has is just absolutely off the charts at his size like we’re in a league right now in the Big 10 where Danny wolf size in big wise is probably the most talented big in this league Derek Queen is second and Derek Queen is going to be an NBA player uh he just has the great combination of side and just feel for the game like I know he’s had like games he AED three assists on the year I think he’s even better passer than he shown like you mentioned he had the five assist game he had 22 11 and5 against Villanova you know he’s putting up games of 29 and four he has 17 and 11 against Ohio State he’s just a very productive player and the combination of skill and size for him is is one that I would be fearful of if I’m Purdue because of given tkr size and defensive ability yeah yeah and also like and also Derek Queen’s un like I know he’s a slow plotter of a player he’s also six he’s also 610 with long arms and like you can’t really just like he’s going to block shots he’s not even a slow plotter I think that’s a not the right way to characterize him because he moves incredibly well for how big he is oh yeah I meant like people think he’s a slow plotter because he’s like a heavy body type guy but he’s like extremely just like light on his feet yeah does he remind you of any big there’s there’s one specific NBA superstar big that uh he’s not in the league anymore but he was that he reminds me of he was a he was a star in the NBA star in the NBA was a oneandone in college one of the most premier one and D we’ve seen in a long time honestly uh who is it one of the first I see a lot of Boogie cousins do you I do maybe I mean that would that would explain my love for Derek Queen yeah I just I see a lot of Boogie cousin it’s like a like a a true seven-footer who may not be in perfect shape but his size kind of worked works for him with how good his feet are and he has the skill set of a guard and he has [ __ ] to him and he’s kind of crazy right like he does he got [ __ ] to him like I I would not be surprised whatsoever if Derek Queen’s trajectory in the future is uh Boogie cousins esque so we’ll see I mean you you you read off Derek Queen’s numbers it’s just like it’s crazy he’s got a block game um three assists eight rebounds he’s shooting 61% from the field 17 points yeah Sensational he uh the one thing he hasn’t done is make a three yet and he shoots them he’s 0 for 10 on the season so if he gets his three-point shot going he’s truly like a Unstoppable Force but um in the meantime it’s just a very tough match up for tkr I think and if you’re trying to imagine what is Purdue gonna do here we’re spending all this time talking about tkr versus Derek Queen I think tkr can still get his but Derek Queen is gonna Feast um we aren’t talking about what what what do you do with Julian Reese right because cam Heidi doesn’t want that this I mean you talked about it in the Purdue Penn State recap this might be like a start first at the FL game they’re not going to I don’t I think you might have to play tkr and first together a little bit here but like but you think payt maybe pivots to it quickly if it get if it’s getting out of hand yeah what’s best for Purdue honestly like it’s better for Purdue to try to go mismatch and exploit it offensively though like you’re can’t like get Cam Heidi pulls T cam Heidi pulls away ree is a guy who’s very foul prone by the way so if Heidi wants to be aggressive maybe get some fou like he could he could pull him away and get you know he can’t hide though that’s the thing that’s respectfully I don’t think like if the answer is first and tkr together against Rees and queen that’s a losing formula so you’ve got to try to play the mismatch game instead but just we have to address the fact that if you’re playing the mismatch game you’re the team giving up the mismatch like you you are going to give up points in the paint in this game at a pretty alarming rate uh um Maryland ninth in the country at forcing turnovers they are a team that will pressure full court I mean that that is what Maryland wants to do they want to pick you up and press how worrisome is that to you coming off a game where Purdue turned it over 20 plus times it’s less worrisome to me because I I think you you have got you have good enough guard play you have great guards you can you have guys that can take care of the ball you’re at home um if there’s an emphasis on it I I believe that there can be better they’re not going to turn the ball over 20 times I mean Maryland turns people over though like if you thought Penn State was good at this this is what Maryland does they just turned Ohio State over 17 times in the game they won by 30 um let me see what they did Marquette didn’t turn it over against them that’s the one loss that they have this season uh have they played a road game this year yet Maryland no that that that’s a good angle they have not played a true Road game they have not played a true Road game yet in their first true Road gamees at Mackie oh that’s scary should we look up what’s happened at Macky between uh Maryland and Purdue in the last couple years uh yeah for some reason I feel like there’s a lot of Julian ree z00 games involved in that Maryland lost at uh Purdue wasn’t last season’s game actually like sneaky close or am I crazy was it hold on Purdue Maryland they only played once last year Purdue won on the road at Maryland by 14 uh the year before this is the one I’m thinking of two years ago with with Edy Purdue only beat Maryland by three Julian ree had 19 really huh yeah okay I mean the first true Road game it’s always scary it’s always scary in the Big 10 for sure uh also like Julian ree has played at Macky before Kobe gilles’s played l of basketball Derek Queen ain’t scared of anything let alone Mackey and I know that it’s going to be like oh you don’t think he’s scared of anything he’s actually not scared he’s not gonna be scared of Mackey I’ll tell you that that can work against them though like it it can work in a way where Derek Queen ends up like very out of control and uh it could hurt them but yeah if I could place like a future at my bookie on Derek Queen to like make a gesture towards the paint crew in this game I would 100% something’s probably going to happen um what is okay I feel like we spent this whole preview thus far talking about this is another concerning match up for Purdue Maryland looks really good and has a lot of stuff to them what is the mismatch for Purdue like what what’s what’s the path to a Purdue dominant performance in this game uh they had the best point guard in the game they have the significantly better back court I think with respect Rodney rice and ston Miguel too like this is and Braden need to show up and do winning time Fletcher and Braden stuff yeah Fletcher Fletcher and Braden need to take take the approach to this game that is it’s them it’s them they’re gonna carry this team like it’s that the whole tkr thing is great but it’s on them this is lawyer Smith this is coming off a loss on the road you’re back home at Mackey this is this is the y’all don’t lose on this court uh yeah no 100% it is um I mean just a Macky juice game is that kind of the summary here like with this needs to be a Juiced up Mackie CommunityWide let’s get the win yeah they have to I think so you got because listen Maryland’s a good basketball team this is would this wouldn’t be even constituted like a bad loss but things get the discussions and things get spooky if you open up Big 10 play 0 and2 yeah I know I like I I know we love like stats things like that I would I don’t know the last time a big 10 Champion opened up League Play 0 and2 yeah um yeah it’s going to be like I mean I think we’ve done a relatively okay job at like preventing Panic from Penn State but I think if you lose to Maryland and Penn State then it’s going to be a clear like okay we’re behind the eightball and defending the championship crown and respectfully to Maryland and Penn State those are two like middle to Upper Middle half teams of the league right nobody predicting Maryland’s going to win the league so if they go into Mackey and make things interesting there’s big questions here um feel like I had one other thing on this that I’m forgetting there’s not really anything profile Wise from Maryland that Purdue has like a massive advantage on like Maryland’s two-point defense has been pretty good top 40 in the country and uh produce three-point offense is obviously what they want to do so yeah it feels like like if I was predicting a formula for Pur it’s probably like a statement Braden game Braden just punks jacobe Gillespie which we do feel like relatively confident that could happen right oh 100 I I have 100% confidence that BR Smith can Punk anybody yeah but we are it’s kind of becoming like Back Against The Wall time yeah and I I I I like I like I like Purdue back courts odds when their back is against the wall me too that hasn’t happened very much throughout the years it has not uh for the camp Believers out there this is the 17th vers 19th team on kenpom Maryland’s up the 19th in the feel-good statement win here but it’s a scary little line here if Purdue opens up at like minus three and a half or minus four it’s it’s scary it it’s definitely scary um but Mackie this back court Back Against The Wall must win I’mma go Purdue 70 77 Maryland 72 so barely okay um close game throughout so here’s where I’m at I’m gonna I’m gonna predict Purdue to win this game but I think it’s going to be really difficult to get there it’s going to be a clunky clunky win here and this is why this is something I’ve been talking about a couple different places recently um I’m trying to remember specifically what a few of these were I’ll probably think of it by the end of this but there’s there’s been this phenomenon going on where playing at home actually ends up working against you psychologically a little bit in certain spots and I think this is the first time in a very long time we we could see that happen a little bit at Mackie here’s why if Maryland is capable of exploiting produce weaknesses that they are we know they are they’re very similar to Penn State stylistically if that shit’s happening at Mackey like say Purdue gets down 10 there’s going to be some uneasiness in that room like for for a fan base that has been coming off of like just pure we dominant every week for the first time in a while it’s going to be some oh my God what’s going on Vibes in Mackey and look I have all the respect in the world for macki but I I think with certain teams certain spots that can be a dangerous spot like I kind of wish this return home to Macky game off a loss was against a team that couldn’t exploit the turnovers and the inside presence right right so look ultimately I’m just not confident enough to pick Kevin Willard to go into Mackie and win a game I can’t do it but everything profile wise tells me that Maryland should be able to do what Mar C and Penn State did to this team so to me I think it’s a game you see that uneasiness I think you see Maryland jump out to an early lead come out on fire and I think you see some painer adjustments I think you see Stellar Braden down the stretch and ultimately Mackey in the second half helps but there will be uneasiness at Mackey early in the game is my my sense here yeah yeah you know what I I I I pride myself on not lying here on this podcast and I and I just feel stupid saying it but I do think that I know I just came on here like I I think because of Macky and because of the backourt I’m giving Purdue the benefit of the doubt but dog a lot of things Marilyn does like could constitute them winning this basketball game and like it should be a surprise if they do I’m just like holding back I think because maybe Kevin Willard but I don’t know that like I I think it’s going to go it’s going to be a close one like you said it’s going either way I’m holding back because Braden Smith’s way better than gasp and I’m holding back because p is way better than Willard y That’s a good call but I think the front court for Maryland’s going to feast in the first half I think Maryland will lead at halftime I wonder what the odds are at my bookie Maryland will lead at half Purdue to win the game that’s
