ducked his way in the second half out of uh a faithful BYU Purdue matchup that would have been fun this game will also be fun Old Miss is 6-0 uh they’re really 7 and0 with an asteris because in their scrimmage that was televised against Illinois they destroyed Illinois this is an Old Miss team that’s old and good and has talent and athleticism and Chris beard as a head coach and Mark Adams as an assistant coach I didn’t even realize that until yesterday and now I’m like what how did anyone let this happen but wait Mark Adam was a former Texas Tex coach is on the Staff Mark Adams the disgraced Texas Tech head coach is on Chris beard the other disgraced Texas Tech head coaches staff at Old Miss right now and everyone’s just like letting this happen oh that’s a that’s a long form discussion put that on the shorts list yeah anyways uh Purdue Miss should be interesting Miss is 41st in the country per kpom Purdue is 11th in the country per kenpom kenpom has a fivepoint spread for Purdue what should Purdue need to know about Old Miss in this one and how confident should they be you know I I think you brought up one of the the main talking points with Old Miss and what I watched this team this year is I I mean you give the generic this team is old and this team is physical but like this team really encompasses that they have a lot of guys that have played a lot of basketball they play extremely hard um in the games that I’ve watched them even in the games they struggled I don’t think this is a team that necessarily waver or gives up even if they are down I think we even saw that in the BYU game they just kept kind of hitting hitting hitting making enough plays locking in on defense and kind of making uh making things happen to the best of their ability and um it’s a team that I think I would just constitute that they’re very physical they’re very old um but at the same time I think sometimes you look at the physicality and the age and the experience of their defense and think oh this old miss defense is like a top 25 defense like a top 30 defense they’re they’re okay they’re respectable um the effort is there I guess I would say which is maybe why I give them a little bit of a bump that they’re better defensively than you might see in metrically but um I I kind of like this Old Miss team and the makeup of it uh I I see the vision of it I think given how early it is in the season you can constitute Old Miss as a team that knows their identity knows how to play and they’re just going to go out there and do that and hopefully that gives them the best ability to win on a night toight basis yeah they find a way to win that’s the number one way I would describe all miss this year I mean you’re six and0 of course that has to be like a prerequisite but um like I said like I I watched the scrimmage against Illinois and you you can say it’s a scrimmage whatever throw it out I understand it doesn’t matter but like that was a televised game both teams were trying Brad Underwood was subbing like it was a real game and all Miss just kind of punked them they jumped on them early and we’re up 20 they haven’t looked that good since I mean even in the BYU win they kind of snatched Victory from the jaws of defeat there and then it went to overtime and you emerged Victorious P whyu did some weird stuff in the end game watch the recap on that one but like even before the BYU win I I would say the BYU wins their most impressive performance they survived at home against Grambling State by two points they survived at home against South Alabama by 10 they haven’t exactly been blowing bad teams out for the most part so I don’t know I I really don’t know what to make of them they they are old they are smart they clearly have a good system and there’s some athletes here um I think padulla is important for them padulla made some really big plays late for uh them again in the BYU game and padulla is a guy to me that like at Virginia Tech was asked to do more than he was capable of it appears that ‘ll Miss they’ve kind of slotted him in in the right role where he can just gun threes and be like a late shot clock guy if needed and he fits in well with the athletes around him um you mentioned the defense it is shocking because when I watch Old Miss I come away feeling like they have a very good defense the numbers don’t back that up the numbers say they’re the 68th best defense in the country we should know last year was Chris Beard’s first year at’ll Miss and they were horrible defensively I mean you would always think a Chris beard team is like really good defensively last year they were outside the top 100 they’re 141st and adjusted defensive efficiency so like I don’t know Mark Adams on the staff he’s also a defense first guy like clearly they have some guys with defensive coaching chops to take Elite from 141 to 68 feels like a sign that maybe an elite defense is coming even if it isn’t here yet but it is weird because I hear your point it’s like I I would have thought the Scout on Old Miss off ey test is like really good defense kind of not the Scout right like the numbers say their offense is better than their defense yeah and and it’s it’s a game too that I think I like Purdue’s matchup with this team like I they don’t have like a necessarily dominant like massive big man or something that could really maybe take advantage of the fact that tkr is a center defensively um you know I it there’s this notion that like Purdue guards can’t handle physicality when when kind of in turn it’s like the opposite like Fletch knows what spots to get to there’s teams that tried do be physical with Fletch he ends up getting his points Braden is Braden you don’t got to really worry about that and if you’re going to get this play out of Cam Heidi and Miles koven then there’s you know Purdue we haven’t even seen the best version of them yet this season I think yeah yeah we uh I think that’s a good point we can get to the Purdue side of this in just a moment um quickly on on important stuff in this matchup so there is one thing Old Miss is like Elite at and is winning the turnover battle every game they are top 10 in the country in both turnovers forced and turnovers prevented offensively they are the number one team at avoiding turnovers on offense which is kind of crazy because I look at the Personnel on this team and I don’t think they’re particularly like great like they don’t have like a superstar point guard facilitating guy like a Braden Smith right so the fact that their number one in the country at avoiding turnovers is pretty crazy and then defensively they’re seventh best in the country at forcing turnovers so like I don’t know Purdue’s average in both of those splits I think there’s a painter stat that’s gone around in Purdue circles since we’ve covered this team that’s like if Purdue um like doesn’t turn it over this many times they have some certain record so I don’t know what that is maybe I’m talking out my ass on that but I feel like I’ve seen that and feels like something paint normally does care about a little bit and you’re probably not winning to turn over battle against Old Miss and then the two things that matter for Purdue profile wise um we’ve talked about how they consistently get outscored in two-point range that’s been like a constant every single game for Purdue even with tkr being really good and NC State did that again NC State was 53% from Two and Purdue was 47% from two so like that’s not good um it seems like every team’s going to do that and then offensive rebounds have have haunted Purdue this season they were good against NC State only nine offensive rebounds there but all Miss import for this matchup not particularly good at either of those ol Miss is not great at scoring at The Rim they’re 154th in the country or excuse me 178th in the country at twoo percentage offense and then they don’t really offensive rebound 154th in the country and offensive rebounding so outside of winning the turnover margin I think this is a pretty great matchup for Purdue because Old Miss isn’t going to make him pay in their weak spots and it may just come down to like Ken puru backcourt take care of the ball which I think we’re kind of past the concerns with Braden on that right so when for Purdue comes down to Purdue’s backourt that’s what I’m thinking and like I mean TK’s been the best love and you gotta love that if you’re a Purdue fan that’s what you want right and tkr has been the best player and I I don’t feel like Old Miss has like a tkr stopper in the front Court like it’s a good game to play tkr at the five yeah no and I TR I trust I think I obviously I trust the back court to take the ball and you know Co a a coach uh of the caliber Matt painer is going to obviously make an emphasis on taking care of the ball and do things that help them take care of the basketball um so you know if that if that does happen they do take care of the basketball I think this a game you feel really good about winning your Purdue like you like the matchup did you see the latest Cobra stats drop I you know what I need my Cobra stats noties on honestly because they always drop heat yeah put the noties on this this is one of their heest of Heats uh I I found this like two hours after Thanksgiving dinner yesterday and I was like this the right time for me to be seeing this stat let me take 45 minutes and digest this um career field goal efficiency leaders like the the effective field goal percentage where it basically puts a value on every single shot you take and make yep cam Heidi is the number one player in NCAA history in effective field goal percentage with a sample siiz caveat that they’ve taken 52s and 53s in their career some names on this list let me name some others number two right behind cam Heidi Zion Williamson number five Chad holgren number six caul brener seven Reed Shephard eight OB toppen you got Lonzo ball on this list cam Heidi’s number one alltime NCAA history right now uh do you make anything that I mean he’s coming off a great performance against sense he state but like we would assume this changes by the end of his career but it’s it’s crazy he’s in his third year in a Purdue uniform he red shirted one of them it’s it’s great right now I love that stat um the first thought that came to my head is I’ll never understand the mental makeup when you do something like that and you were visibly scared to shoot the ball earlier in season yeah but that seems to have gone away he’s cam Rising now oh please no please he went he went from cam hiding to cam Rising cam rising and me have a very very skewed relationship I don’t know the backstory there we can talk not it’s not for this video okay well uh there is another Purdue player on this list Grady eer remember Grady eer how many Purdue players are on this list just two it’s the top 15 Grady eord is 14th top 15 and Purdue has two players yeah and and they’re Grady eord in cam [Laughter] Heidi Purdue so back they’re so back the last thing that matters in this preview to me is Matt painer and Chris beard Head to Head what do you make of that because look say what you want about the guy Chris beard there’s a lot of stuff there we know the guy can coach he was consider considered like the hottest next up New Era coach five years ago when Texas Tech made a final four run and uh I think the early returns of him both at Texas into where he’s at now at all Miss like the guy can coach so is there an advantage on one side of the sideline here Chris Pier versus Matt Panter um I I think there’s a slight advantage to paint but it’s it’s it’s very close because I think like you said take everything else out just pure baset wise Chris beard is a great basketball coach so that’s that’s something the factor in here like you talk about coming up against a team that even on a you know if you’re coming on a short rest right like a quick turnaround playing a team you want to maybe take advantage like if there’s like a Hubert Davis on the other sideline right Beer’s gonna have have them ready and have the game plan in place uh for this Purdue game yeah yeah he’s a good coach yeah so is Matt paner yeah really good where do you get the edge I think it’s about a draw to be honest you think yeah like if G to my head I have to pick one I’ll pick paint but I wouldn’t have picked paint two weeks ago when paint was playing a lineup that made no sense true so like timing of it now now that paint seems to have figured out his Personnel I’m like yeah in in the game give me paint but I feel like Chris beard came into the season knowing his Personnel a lot better than payter did so yeah I agree they’re both great coaches I would put both in the top 10 in the sport right now um but Integrity when it comes down to Integrity one side has a a pretty clear Advantage the projected score Purdue four and a half I would get all over Old Miss in that case but this seems like it’s going to be uh this game’s going to come down to the that last four minute stretch maybe out of the last media timeout um and you know Purdue might be up five at that time they might be down they might be you know it it’s going to be close I think so I’mma take Purdue to win the game I’ll I’ll go I think they’re gonna score more than I’m gonna go 79 to 70 you know what 76 7976 Purdue I will say this if Purdue wins this game I think it it’s highly likely they got a great Braden game and if they lose this game I think it’s highly likely they got an average Braden game like we Braden’s not gonna be a disaster he’s I think he’s pretty incapable of like playing purely poorly at this point in his career but like I think this is one of those games you need great Braden to win this game and we’ve seen great Braden multiple times this season it’s been about a week right yeah la last thing too I’ll say about this game though yeah the Old Miss is gonna have some opportunities in the SEC right of course like they have that in their bag good win against BYU that’s a good resent Booth like this win against Purdue could do wonders for them come March that’s a really good that’s a really good not that’s that would be two really good noncon wins in my opinion after playing a little bit of a
