Raptor fans we are talking about your Civil War the RJ versus OG trade but we got to start with Scotty Barnes who went down yesterday with what looked like an ankle injury time of the taping we don’t really know all the details but I think it’s safe to say we’re not going to expect to see him in the lineup for a little bit tough to see him go down cuz he was playing very very well it really feels like the gods are trying to send a message I’m hurt dog I’m hurt sh dead [Music] re this is basketball Island Hine handbone West Fab and yeah the Fab is hurt I think we’re all a little hurt because Scotty’s playing awesome and it was fun we talked about the lose but make it fun and Scotty was making those losses fun he was he was on both ends of the floor too like not just as facilitating which I know we’ve made some money on as of late but man like it just we haven’t seen Scotty IQ and RJ play together and it just feels like that dream is just GNA go further and further away like it’s like it’s actually kind of like you said it man maybe the gods do have a message for this like maybe the Raptors Were Meant to tank like I don’t want to say that like after a guy gets hurt but it feels that way does it not I mean even going all the way back to the preseason when RJ Barrett had that shoulder injury I was like what’s going on like why is there a preseason injury that of that significance happening in you know in those games and you’re just seeing a carryover like you know each player after each player I I’m just sad that we’re not going to see the amount of Developmental reps that you want to see from them in a in a tanking year like this how many games are we going to get from them this year yeah I mean the first and foremost you just hope it’s nothing too crazy not too bad of an injury like an ankle roll is you know somewhat manageable but hopefully it’s nothing worse than that but yeah you took the words out of my mouth I mean this season is we keep saying this over and over it’s all about development and development while now your best player is not going to be on the court for a while and he’s not going to play with the other guys he needs to build chemistry with it’s a weird needle to thread right like cuz on the one hand if he does play with RJ quickly Raptors probably win more games than they should especially down the stretch when the schedule gets easier but now like you’re like is it time do we need to do we need to back off is this ISO ball you’ve been pretty frustrated about the Raptors fans and their lack of embracing of the tank it’s a lack of like um long-term thinking is is what like gets me going so like obviously a couple wins against a flawed Miami team a flawed Indiana team which we’ll talk about later like those are nice but they don’t mean anything down the stretch like we we were at the OKC game we saw what happened OKC’s been rebuilding for years they got to that point homegrown talent to get to that point now where they’re just dusting teams by 30 number one in the west like what do we want as Raptors fans as people who support the franchise like what do we want can say you’re not a rapers fan I’m going to be fake commenter being tanking doesn’t work all the time giving this example and Cherry picking example here I to the people in the comments yes we know tanking doesn’t always work but in order to get a superstar this is the best way do this is the debate that I have this is important for to distinguish between what type of fan are you do you care about winning championships or do you want your team to win 45 games every season in perpetuity there are two very different type of asks if you want to get to that Championship level unless you’re like us who’ve been there from literally 1995 watching this thing get built up you have to eat a lot a lot of you know doggy poo poo to get there all right that’s how it goes all right you eat pieces of you’re in big trouble though pal I eat pieces of you for breakfast you eat pieces of for breakfast no so just said okay it’s not that easy it’s not that easy to make a championship level Team come out of nothing right or you can just complain oh but I want to get into playing I want to be the Chicago Bulls every year so like so I was there’s a difference so we were talking about it yesterday at the broadcast this is for uh we’re taping this on a Tuesday so this is coming after the loss to the Knicks there’s no real like handbook on how to tank right there’s no real handbook on how to become a contender there are two different ways there’s one way where you can get it through the draft which is where I believe the Raptors should go in that direction or there’s the way that massai did it the last time around the Raptors won a title whereas you’re good for a while you see what you have you take cracks at it and then you make a big move that puts you over the top but has anybody else really been able to do that successfully not really um maybe the Celtics with Drew holiday you know what the Celtics thing was built through the draft though because it was built through T they did both yeah they did both there’s there’s clearly no right or wrong way no formula for tanky you can play the water bout game you could say well look the the Pistons it hasn’t worked out for them well it’s worked out for the Spurs it’s worked out for the magic and OKC they’ve gotten studs in the draft from from bottoming out and but the important thing is that this Raptor team is clearly full of holes they need to raise their ceiling talent wise how do you do that you have to get a good draft pick that’s that’s the only viable way to significantly raise your ceiling and even the kawhai circumstance coming into the is he ever going to play a game for Toronto is he going to be out there more than 10 games this season there was so much risk that went into that maneuver it’s not just like oh Raptors were in a position of you know power they successfully made a tra Spurs had to get rid of him because they couldn’t have him on their roster and the Raptors were willing to take on that risk all of this comes at a cost nothing none of this free did Z pulia win the Raptor championship by injuring Kawai odly enough that was a that was a true litmus test of like Raptor fans in ball IQ because it’s like the D rozan Fanboys there was a group of them that were mad about the trade then the people who like no ball were like oh like now we can win a title where we could before one thing I will say though about and and this is not an attack on the comments we love we love the community we love the discussion but a lot of people being like well look at Miami how come Miami never has to has to tank because they live in Miami and people want to go to Miami you live in LA people want to go to La we’re sorry we love Toronto Toronto’s a great City ain’t nobody lining up to come to Toronto as a free agent and that’s the big thing too like no one’s coming to toron what was the last like big free agent that came to Toronto turoo turo Mari Carroll like what Jason Capo stand up that’s what I’m saying like so you’re GNA have to do it two ways it’s either through the draft or through trade teams are smarter now yeah teams are a lot smarter like the the cap is a lot harder to kind of like work around the minations are a lot more complicated than they were in the past the best way to do it in my opinion is through the draft so are you going to really hang on to these like wins in November and December and then like you know finish around like 28 wins 31 wins and then like just find yourself on the like a treadmill of mediocrity like it doesn’t make sense I get it you want to see these guys that you have an invested interest in in this season who are playing hard do well we all do but the what’s happening right now the the way the Raptors are losing games and losing fun is what matters most make sure you put yourself in position where you’re finishing top six top five in the draft and yes I understand that the lottery is a lottery we’re not guaranteed what position the Raptors F like Pistons finished bottom four last year end up with a fifth pick like it happens but you need to put yourself in that situation to give you the best odds to get that next guy yeah just do to your point uh the wins against Indie and Miami are fun but there’s levels to this you play OKC you get boded you play Dallas Scrappy game but you lose you lose to the Knicks there’s a clear gap between those kind of like middle of the- pack teams and and super Elite teams that you’re trying to get to can I play commenter Devil’s Advocate one more time what about the people who say there’s more of a value to seeing your core guys get reps together and playing games so I they’re absolutely right I think the difference is you want to see them grow and develop in clutch time like they did in those in those two games the Nick game clutch Time game good performance Dallas same idea they had a very good performance in clutch after some bad ones early on in the year it’s not the wins though don’t talk to me about wins wins is not the wins is different than development those are two completely separate things you want to see these guys show growth on the court chemistry built up on the court that doesn’t necessarily equ to wins wins are a convenient byproduct of that but you want to see these guys ultimately just grow and get better each game and it is that Scotty Barnes he’s now we don’t know how long he’s going to be out again you just you just get upset at the fact that he’s had such good momentum these past like eight nine 10 games and what he has a start again coming back from whatever injury like recovery time period he’s going to be that sucks yeah I mean and I think at least we can say with him on the it’s been a good product I mean if you’re a raptor fan through 20 plus games this has been a fun season how many games have gone down to the wire these young guys are are showing out in these games they play hard so the product at least encourage yourself with the fact that has been pretty good if you’re tuning into these games and to me that’s actually important and I think Wes said it last week with especially with Scotty floor Razer and that’s the thing that sucks with him of all people going down because you see how he can make everybody else better and then now we kind of lose that Wes talked about the clutch stuff so this is from our our home girl keeks Raptors right now are s and 18 right the Raptors have either LED or been within seven points in the fourth quarter in 16 of their 18 games this season that’s pretty crazy and let’s just whisper it because losses sorry losses but fanduels listening keep in gaming against the Raptors keep doing it we made money last night again with the Knicks keep in gaming against the Raptor while we’re still on the Knicks I just have to sorry Carl Anthony towns you’re up two you hit that three you’re popping your jersey we win in New York buddy you shot 37% in the west finals last year yeah you’re you’re four games above 500 or something like that but when you’re me and West who are you bro when you’re me West and you had Nicks minus 2 and a half we love to see that Jersey pop like that I think I even texted him meow to the cat just cuz that’s how fired up I was that was vomit in my mouth typ stuff coming from that guy heroic even like there was some weird stuff in that game like but Jaylen Brunson holding that yeah for so long I’m like dude it’s been 10 seconds like what’s going are is there like some internal I like the they that I think they probably wanted to win that game for OG because like you know what this is a trade these are old teammates good job Nicks you beat the Raptors without Scotty Barnes by four Celtics in five have fun in the playoffs what’s the one thing we always say we want honest actors the Knicks cared and they won that game so credit to the next they weren’t winning the game for OG they were doing it for James Dolan suing the Raptor oh yeah there’s that too yeah that’s why that’s why the the lawsuit that would like didn’t even interfere with making a trade which but now at the same time though don’t you want to when you’re playing when you’re going up against your own teammates don’t you want to just really of course don’t you want to beat them you want to beat those guys it’s of course so now the the undercard is done let’s get to the main event because that Nicks game yesterday gives us a chance to revisit the RJ RJ and quickly for OG trade now don’t forget about precious that you yeah big block yesterday press was okay RJ and this is the this is the RJ story that I feel like we repeat week after week after week after week after week he looked good offensively but then at the same time was lost offensively and a lot of raptor a lot of raptor fans are revisiting that hamon I feel like you have a lot to say you can you can take the floor here ISO ball again we need we need ISO ball animation just to set this up a lot of passionate uh debates on the RJ Barrett subject I’ve been labeled emotional for my takes um I disagree with with that I think it’s actually incredibly calculated there’s a reason the Knicks traded two players for ogan and Obi there’s a reason for it right ogan anobi is a guy if healthy and obviously that’s a big if with him that game seven of the finals final last six minutes of the game he gives you amazing two-way play the fact that he can shoot the three and open three and he can defend your best player and you’re not going to worry about him defensively that’s not the case with RJ Barrett it’s just not like again offensively against flawed teams he’s been awesome like he’s been Tor torturing people from at home that’s great playmaking is leveled up as well that’s nice as well but he cannot defend he just can’t and I get it not g to say explore the space but like the season like you this what you want to see what he has throw him in there give him a chance to fail give him a chance to succeed and I think we’ve seen both this season both failure and like it’s just the defense for me man there’s a reason New York made that trade you you want guys like OG and you’re willing to not have guys like RJ because he cannot shoot consistently on catch and shoot threes yet again we’ll see if that changes but he also cannot defend can I let me let me ask one question based off of what you thought of RJ before the trade this is a two-prong question based off of what we thought of RJ before the trade versus what you’ve seen now I for one think RJ is better than what I thought they were getting when the trade was happening agreed course and then my next I’ll I’ll go to the second phase of this for everybody given the OG contract now and the OG injury history we saw it in the in the Pacers series who won this trade I still think the Knicks won the trade it’s incomplete how can we how can we give a final grade we we haven’t seen quickle play enough quickley is arguably like we’re talking about RJ quickley was probably the main guy the Raptors wanted back in this trade so to me it’s just incomplete who then has more value now though quickly or RJ is it still quickly think yeah yeah because quickly to me is still a point guard who can bang 40% from three theoretically we need to see him grow as a playmaker I mean okay here’s the I’m gonna big zoom out here on RJ Barrett if you are a team gunning to win a championship what is RJ Barrett on your team and how much does he make so the way it’s set up right now how he’s playing you’re asking him to be your number one primary scoring yeah he can’t be that on and so this is my feelings about the trade so you talk about you know comparing player a to player B the difference is they have different roles on the team that they play so if you have a guy like RJ Barrett right now who’s scoring the way he is you’re asking him to be your primary score well he has to be measured in a vacuum against every other team’s primary score whereas OG is in a completely different role and funnel for the Knicks he is their primary stopper he is their primary you know Outlet scorer off the perimeter you don’t have five primary scores on a starting closing lineup you have different guys in different roles who are supposed to excel what they do New York doesn’t need F five primary scores on their roster to win a championship OG’s a perfect fit for the fact that they have Julius Rand uh well they had Julius Randall and they had um Jaylen Brunson they already they already had two primary scorers and then Randle shipped off the Raptors what do they need right now at that time they didn’t need OG because they’re just trying to find more scoring RJ’s been a good fit for the Raptors it’s great Scotty Barnes we’ll see whether or not he becomes a primary level score but the way the team is built right now I think even three years from now any primary score on the Raptors would not even be in the top 10 in the NBA and that’s a harsh reality for raps fans but compare every single MVP caliber score in the NBA the Raptors don’t have one that measures up against Alca even Kyrie on the same team a shay so you’re asking RJ to be mono aono against those guys arej going to lose that battle understand what you’re saying like again I I instinctively answer the question with Nicks I just think that you’re trading for dudes who can be that guy guy you rely on an important playoff games that to me is the barometer right we don’t know what quickly is I’m tantalized by his potential definely can become I he can for sure was he great defensively New York he’s up and down RJ Barrett not really known as a good Defender who wins games when it matters the most what kind of players do you need on the court it’s the reason the Knicks gave up five first round picks fromel Bri but we we also haven’t seen OG perform at a championship level like sure he’s a good Defender but that’s not like there was frustrating moments with that guy offensively there was talk about he’s going to grow as an offensive player he didn’t really do that so you’re paying 40 million for this like kind of fourth Cog on the Knicks and that’s fine he was on the Raptor championship team he didn’t play they won a title without him even suiting up you also said you also said on the court and when their season was on the line he was not on the court well or he was in the final game but then couldn’t even move good job t biggest caveat is obviously his availability how much do we measure how do we measure that with someone like him because with some guys like the Scotty thing yesterday that was a freak injury yeah OG it’s beyond that he is injury-prone he that’s that’s there’s something WR you’re waiting for it to happen he’s been healthy this year good for him I’m happy for him but so then is how can you say that that’s I and I’m not I don’t necessarily think that the Raptors won the trade but I can understand people saying well the raps clearly won the trade because OG’s still that guy who always gets hurt and now you gave him all that money the Raptors traded for a couple of well I guess they see in their mind like tantalizing potential whereas the Knicks I think traded for a sure thing from a positional perspective yeah now again it’s lack of clarity on whether OG plays in those games he didn’t make it through the playoffs last year for the Knicks either although to your point tibs like please relax yourself playing these guys like 45 minutes a game like enough with that but to me I think ogan anobi fits the Prototype of a player you need to win the title yes he he happen to be on the Raptor Championship run okay cool that didn’t happen the Raptors were loaded anyway like across the board and yet you think he wouldn’t have helped that team like R playing Jody Meeks at time I’m just saying we don’t have a track record on on OG going to the finals or the Conference Finals like he was on that team with Van v he hit that against Boston the B amazing three so there’s no track Rec of OG being some like excellent playoff player yeah but the central question you ask is who’s won the trade right now and the reason why it’s incomplete is cu the Raptors were looking to get these two players because of the potential we’ve we haven’t even seen these guys on the court so we don’t even know what their potential is so OG I think is a known entity that’s what it is and the Knicks needed a known entity at this stage and where their team’s development is the Raptors 3 to four years from now like you said will very likely have the best player in this dra in this trade but what type of role are you asking of those two players to excel in comparing those people in that funnel against the best in the league at that role OG very likely in his role will remain the best in his funnel compared to IQ and RJ against primary score the best point guards in the league it’s going to be tough for RJ and IQ to get to the level that OG is relative to best two-way players in the league I like defense man like I like defense defense wins it just does right again I’m I’m I appreciate the swings on both these guys I do Raptors were in a position where they needed Talent they needed a talent upgrade last year was bad last year was ugly even down the stretch of the season for the Raptors like there weren’t any viable prospects other than Grady dick that you’re actually getting time to right like it was not great you needed a swing on talent I appreciate that but as of now like man oh we’re going to watch the Knicks probably get to the Conference Finals this year right OG will be a piece to that well here’s another another element of this is that RG and quickly RJ and quickly aren’t even that cheap you’re you’re paying them 60 odd million between them so it’s not like these guys are on great deals where you could then say okay well you know we we cheapened our costs here at the expense of OG well they didn’t really do that so once again I still think it’s incomplete I think OG serves the Knicks purposes better than he would the rap exactly and that’s it the makeup of which the Knicks are built and I think it comes later with the bridges trade too I it’s like we’re design we Boston is going to is who we’re aiming for they’re going to beat us with wings well we have two of the best Wing Defenders right now and I love the way their the way that they’ve built that team makes perfect sense time will tell my instinct was Nicks won the trade only because I can see early dividends from them look there’s a world where we look at this in 5 years from now and everybody won the Knicks in the immediate future they paid off and then the Raptors at the end of it in 5 years they have the two Highest Potential players showing up my only my only argument as to and I don’t once again I don’t think the RS won the trade I think the only argument you can make is we’ve gotten a lot more than we expected from RJ when that trade was made so that’s a win now those in the comment section take a break break from bashing hamone as RJ takes and let us know what you think who won the trade Raptors and Knicks and on that note let’s keep talking trade or trade rumors because right before we started taping we got it is it are we calling them Shams bombs or no because there’s no more W bombs so what do we got I don’t know whatever I’m sure there’s something other we’ll figure it out so Jimmy Butler if the heat are apparently open to trading Jimmy Butler and three teams mentioned the Mavs the Warriors the Rockets I think all of us I know do all of us have eay eema Futures now we do I I would love the rockets and I think they have the pieces to get that done we talked last week and two weeks ago about how Jamari Smith might be the odd man out there that’s a great piece where do we want us first of all hold on you’re the you’re a a heat lover do you want to see Jimmy delt and if so where um I do want to see him dealt I think I I just don’t see Miami having enough horses in this playoff race I just don’t I love them I I I bet them to win the title before play in race that’s probably that’s um if I had to pick a team from those three that you mentioned it’s the Warriors to me just don’t think you can waste Steph Curry’s final years here as like this guy who broke basketball I know he’s like what 35 36 years old he has what two three years left of elite play trade kaminga Moody psky whoever you have to do get Jimmy Butler on your roster with Draymond with Steph couple Shooters around them I think to me that’s the best case scenario but I do agree I think Houston has the most asset I I mean I I just want to bring up a note on Golden State they tried to do this like win now and win in the future with all this draft stuff uh the win in the future stuff messed up none of their future guys look like franchise level players they had a swing at James wisman they had Moses Moody they had Jonathan kaminga uh I’m sorry man the results speak for themselves none of these guys are showing that level of Promise so I’m with you um they better just like take their eat take their medicine uh this is their window there is no future kind of carryover window I’m I’m sorry is anybody on that team good enough to qualify that I think they just got to C as much as they can they also they’re flush with picks too right they can move all need to do that the Warriors owe it to Steph to to try and win the title while you still have this you know semi Elite version of him whether you want to say how good he is now compared to maybe a couple years ago but they owe it him to try to win so that’s an interesting fit Rockets is cool because Jimmy becomes the veteran there that might scare some teams in the playoffs you know and fit and fit their makeup we spoke about this a week we spoke about this a week ago they don’t really have a closer per se they probably look at that too and say well we bring this guy in all of a sudden that’s an alpha mentality with these young guys who all play defense so to me that’s the most fun version like I’m tired of the Warriors I don’t want to see these guys like you’ve had a run man I I just I don’t want to see it’s been 10 a decade of this can we move on from the Warriors I will say on the Rockets even though they’re like the best three for one type of candidate to go make a deal like this I get the inkling that they want to be kind of like OKC yeah let our guys let us slow build this we’re already in the top half of the playoffs in the west we don’t need to go take a swing this no one even expected us to be in the playoffs right now so they want to let their guys kind of build their confidence up they already have a great like front seven kind of thing but it’s diminishing returns at a certain point you can’t have seven young guys right like you can’t develop all these guys at once so you kind of have to cash it in now I don’t know if Jimmy’s the right guy to do that I don’t think I’m not going to question he too early as well I think he’s I don’t he’s not washed he’s like kind of you he’s on the he’s fading a bit dare he’s fading a bit compared to but he could turn up in the playoffs on a good team I think no here’s here’s the problem here’s the problem with Houston like if they trade for Jimmy who’s on a player option by the way 52 mil too many Alphas on one team with who too many too many too many Alphas Fred Van V’s an alpha e’s an alpha mentality manity hold on holdal those aren’t Alphas those are dogs and you want multiple dogs too many dudes who think they’re awesome and I love that for Houston so I would I’d be all on board for that I think one two we’re forgetting who Jimmy is early Jimmy I think if he goes to somewhere like Golden State Playoff Jimmy he can operate within he can do all the little things okay hold on though so why is Miami fed up with him why do they not want to pay him and why are they trying to trade him because well he culture he’s a winner I think Jimmy wears people out yeah as a person sure well and I think Riley was right he’s like you want the bag you play 50 games yeah like you need to be available at this point in his career I think he needs another guy to shoulder the scoring load so what about Dallas cuz Dallas is that that was a title team last year does he put Dallas in the conversation is the team that we think can be Bost I don’t think Dallas has the assets and also like the fit the fit is a little weird because binant he’s not a three-point shooting guy which these two ball dominant guys that’s what they’re looking for I honestly think like Golden State’s really the place to be because I don’t think Jimmy should be in a position where he’s the alpha anymore you go to a place like Houston where he’s going to disrupt all this good chemistry if they’ve built a red he blows that all of that up if he goes there and he screws in my learn from him I don’t see that’s a debate though right does he help the young guys or does he hamper them mentality man but look at how they got a coach who’s giving them that mentality so they don’t need they don’t need an external coexist they don’t need an external variable to mess all that up these guys went crazy I’m like you need dogs you need guys who think they’re the best Houston is littered with those guys I I think I think Golden State’s a great role for him where he can be that same way but he’s not the best player on the team fit in and be a cog as opposed to having to carry that weight and Houston and Golden State like if you believe some of the reporting in the summer try to trade for big guys like Houston’s going after Kevin Durant Paul George going like Warriors thrown after Paul marinin was in the The Warriors I think are going big game hunting I think dun leevy understands that so to me I think Jimmy’s a perfect fit Steph Jimmy Dre yeah oh my oh my goodness make that a title team say they do that depends I think so I think so that’s it’s like in the mix and then like they have in a seven game series a shot to knock out anyone yeah on that note that’s all for us catch us on Apple Spotify wherever you get your podcast we’ll see you next week [Music]
