we are moving on here on Monday night football though to Manchester United’s new head coach Ruben amam who joins on November the 11th from Sporting Lisbon and we are of course joined tonight by a former Manchester United striker in Dimitar bpov so we thought we’d take the opportunity to have a look at what Manchester United are getting uh sporting as you can see pretty good at most things uh dominating in Portugal top for goals uh the expected goals categories the best defend in the league as well they have the fewest chances against them they dominate possession with the most short passes and Progressive carries and they’re also third in the league for final third tackles that they make this is what Ruben amarim is is moving towards the job that he inherits is a team which is really struggling at the top end of the pitch you just don’t expect to see this from a Manchester United side 18th uh for goals uh the fewest since the this this stage of a season since the 1970s also XG against is not great either they’re not figuring amongst the very top teams in terms of possession or short passes so all this has happened at Sporting Lisbon with a very distinct style of play Jamie so let’s talk a little bit about this because we’ve seen it I mean can described in either of these two ways I suppose 3421 343 but it all figures three or five at the back which we don’t see from Manchester United and we don’t see from many teams in the Premier League we go back to con’s time one three at the back I think that’s the only time we can remember that happening in terms of someone winning the Premier League title but when you actually look at the numbers and you just on on the wagon wheel there I think it’s important that we say because some people might say but it’s only it’s only Portugal you know maybe they said that about an iot or it’s only the Dutch League now what you’ve got to remember is sportting are the third biggest team in that league if they above PTO and Benfica who were established champ iions League clubs probably over the last 20 years PTO took I think Arsenal the penalties last season so they’re no mugs so for them to be faced in everything and be top of the league in portug is an amazing achievement and hence why you know he’s got the job but I think in terms of we’re all fascinated not that it’s just a new Manchester United manager it’s just that the setup of the team is going to be different than what we’ve seen in the past from Manchester United and most coaches coming in so what are the key features of this team then this this sporting setup well what I will say is I had a good look at sport and sort of towards the end of last season and the reason being was I I thought Ruben amaram was going to get the Liverpool job that’s what I thought after shabby alono dropped out the race I I thought it was going to be this guy so I had a little look and the actual middle Center back’s interesting deande here because last season that was Sebastian quarz who I played with at Liverpool so I watched them building up from the back so building up from the back the two center backs used to come a little bit narrow and Sebastian quart as it was and imagine dimand does a little bit the same here at times the middle Center back would go into today and we’ve seen Jon Stones do that you know for Manchester City at times but and he’s almost create like almost like a diamond here with the goalkeeper and try and play out from there but andasio there’s no doubt he’s almost like the best on the ball they try and build up from the back through him what what’s interesting is you got you got your two Central Midfield plays but the wing backs and that’s I think the the one area way when you look at Manchester United Squad because we know Center back wise they’re quite covered in terms of the numbers now theya got five or six center backs at the club you do scratch your head and think what is he going to do Wing back wise because it is a specialist position but when you actually look what he’s got here of sportting he’s certainly on on one side he’s got someone who’s more of a Winger so we’re trying to think of maybe Manchester United what would they do would it be a Winger in that position or would the wide players come as number 10 because Manchester United have a lot of Wingers and then you’ve got your sort of two number 10s in these position behind joarez who’s been an Absol sensation as a center forward and these players we know them a little bit I think these two players have both played for wolves as well so it’ be interesting again will the wide players Manchester United go in there or be a Bruno Fernandez type of player so I but the one thing I would stress here is we’re talking about what they’re going to do with the ball his team are dominant in Portugal and I think it’s really important when you’re dominant in a lesser league is that you’re going to dominate the ball more Manchester United is not one of the top teams in this league so they’re going to be against the ball so his out of possession setup is going to be vital between now and the end of the season to try and make Manchester United competitive and see if they’ve got a chance for Europe or an outside chance for the top four maybe do you think it would be strange to me if if this manager this this coach has has used this formation for the whole time he’s been with Sporting Lisbon or something similar that he would move away from this just because he’s moving to a new club I think the first thing he’s probably doing it right now assessing what type of players he’s going to have in United are they going to fit his way of playing uh if not is he going to bring new players but for sure I think he’s going to stick with the same system at least give it a try give it a try and see how it’s going to be working I agree with Jamie and way that who are going to be the wing backs this is going to be a problem for United in my opinion because you need someone who is really the whole game up and down the pitch up and down the pitch and who this is going to be of course in the middle of the park he already work with ugard so he have trust in him I think from what I hear so he’s going to probably be playing in the middle of the park covering the pitch but up front as well is interesting because this guy Victor gorz he scoring goals for fun right now so I think there is a special connection uh with with the coach so maybe maybe we probably going to see him in United shirt at one point from what he’s showing right now I think yes because our Strikers at the moment are not doing and producing and scoring goals like we see from the wheel wagon 18 in the league with scoring goals which is embarrassing for a stature of club like United so this is a position that I would like to see Improvement well J’s had a little bit of uh a bit of fun and a little glimpse of the future so we can actually see a projected 11 that he may decide to to go with all right well yeah I mean I mean di you have your say and then and Dimitar can come yeah but I think listen sometimes certain players are used to you know I actually think Martinez in this position I’ve mentioned this before listen we got might suit him might suit him gives you that balance with a left foot I I can’t see Delo Maguire being in the wiish and they can’t he will not be able to cope so it I don’t think Dela McGuire could play in the same back three because whoever was in the wide position would get really now yo always coming as a young player he’s a project for the club I’m sure yeah he’d want to work with him get him in young player probably can deal with maybe the pace down the sides of it as well so but they’ve got the numbers if there’s injuries or suspensions we know they’ve got that I’m thinking ugti and Mayu ugti is as a player who knows and also when I’ve seen Sport and Lisbon play these two players don’t just sit and don’t move here in terms of pressing at times they will push right up and be really aggressive on the opposition’s Sens so do you think energy is important in there rather than ER and a casemiro type in there 100% it will be about energy there because don’t forget the center of the pitch how often do we see teams not just with three players in there with four players in people talk about playing the box in there that’ll be really interesting how they cope with that defense and that’s why I say is out of possession setup will be fascinating when he hasn’t got the best players in the league or the best team in the league because that that will cause a problem I go to sort of the setup and I’ve almost put like one attack and fullback on one side and Garo on the other because when you look set up at spoken at times these players are actually asked to be really high and Wingers and they’re going to have to be good in 1 V one and again that’s talking about Manchester United dominating with the ball maybe being at Old Trafford but when you actually look at the fixture list very early on I think they’ve got Arsenal away maybe after four or five games that’ll be an interesting decision if you’ve got gacho and he starts well maybe in the left wing back role but you’re playing against saak and Arsenal are dominating and they’re at home and they’re on the front foot and gachu was getting ask the players a left fullback that’s that’s probably that’s probably the only thing I was just thinking to myself I don’t think that’s going to work garach to defend I don’t think he’s going to like that maybe sha let’s say if sha is fit enough it’s a big question it’s a big if isn’t it but but the question there is if when you’re a team who dominated the ball so in sport Lisbon so on the on the wing back positions he’s got attacking players because he’s probably thinking well I won get at show One V one if I have a fullback there all the time on both sides when they get into this attacking end of the pitch can they beat a fullback can they play one so it’s just getting that balance isn’t it between the offensive side of it and when they have to defend but is he going to ask him to come back in defense as well because then without a about are we 541 or we again 3 43 or 3 421 what we doing because again it’s attacking player garnacho I am pretty sure he’s hate defending and going back because he’s going to waste his energy defending and then when he needs to up he’s going to be tired well is that what makes this system difficult because you have to have specialists in the wing back position and there’s not many of them about yeah that’s why I think sha if his fit is going to be better suited for that position going up and down the pitch because he have that quality to do that as well are the goals in this team uh you have the guy who can produce and make the difference with a pass with a shoot with a free kick with with a goal as well you have rashford who sometimes you know what he’s going to bring sometimes you don’t he can surprise you but he in his in his right frame of mind he have goals in him still garach if he plays up the pitch I think with his youthful youthfulness you can go and beat people as well di if there was a chance let’s say okay if gachi wasn’t going to play as a wing back let’s say you’re right and he plays him higher up the pitch do you think Fernandez is capable of playing in one of those positions there alongside maybe a ugti or a Manu do you think Fernandez could do that job I I think he he he’s able to do that because from what I see right now he wants to be everywhere in the pitch he he is the captain so he wants to show everybody I can I can be everywhere if he ask to do that he can do a deep line playmaker let’s say do you think he’s got the discipline to do that uh if the new manager explain what he wants from him look you’re my captain you lead by example I want you to do this this this and this I think he he’ll do it but then how we uh force him to stay deep down here when he’s not so strong and his best position is around here final third where he give that pass split the defense and then make the make the difference I think this one is going to be enough Manu you have three in the back Onana is good with his feet maybe they will do that diamond that you show they’re doing in sporting so they will they will try to play from the back the same thing but these players they need to be good on the ball and intelligent enough to split the line with with the passes with the ball we know from Ruben am that his preference would have been to come at the end of the season he would have had a preseason to work with some players and and maybe bring in some some players who are used to the way that that he plays um maybe he he’s already seen the squad and thinks they need a bit of an injection but this is the first 55 days that he faces he arrives on on the 11th during the international break his first game is Zips it away on that Super Sunday and then he’s got 12 games he’s he’s pretty much got two a week for this entire period and and as Jamie was saying some really big tests in there as well Arsenal away coming up he’s got some key games in Europe he’s got Manchester City away he’s got a carabal cup tie as well which which could be hugely significant in this his first season in charge uh and before this run of games is finished he’s got to go to anfield as well how hard is it going to be for him to get his message through to create what he wants in terms of in possession and out of possession with all those games to manage as well well it doesn’t I think that it doesn’t matter which the opponent is and now in the situation United you need basically in the Premier League you need the points to get higher into the table uh in Europe you need the wins as well so for him the assessment of the players that he have now in the team is very important it’s crucial to know okay I can count on this player to fit into my system and then go up from there if though the question in my mind is if they’re not fitting into his hisem what is he doing then I I think that’s a really important point because we’ve spoke for years about 10 AR not really having an idea what’s his style of play what’s his what’s his plan I think if Ruben Amarin comes away from that so quickly I think he’s almost got to say this is what I’m about this is my plan almost the players might be 100% suited because they won’t be they’re not his players not they’re not the squad he’s built but he’s almost got to put an idea into this team about what he wants as principles as players system and he’s almost not writing this season off but he’s almost building a lot of this squad not everybody for next season and then get into the summer transfer wind on and bringing players in that Su well final thoughts on this and I don’t sure that any Manchester United manager really has the luxury of writing a season off he arrives with the team in 13th what do you think would be acceptable by May qualifying for Europe at least at least I think I think they can manage a long way off isn’t it it does but the same time not because as we can see City can lose points Arsenal can lose points Liverpool is to the top all right but they have a chance and I’m curious to see coming into the team is he going to stick to the system that brought him success in Portugal yes Portugal a good league but Premier League you know guys it’s up there one of the best in the world so is he going to stick to the system or when he sees the player say okay we need the points we need the results we’re going to change it a little bit and maybe see what happens can’t wait to see how it all unfolds it’s going to be fascinating to see it play out isn’t it with IP switch that first game on the Super Sunday in a couple of weeks time
