hey everybody welcome back to the Senators round table I’m your host Jacob Billington joined by Paul and Dayton as usual uh how’s it going guys good I’m I’m cold I’m cold it’s winter yes it’s winter is officially set in you getting much snow out there in saskat you on Dayton yeah we had a a winter storm morning the other day so that was fun it got like really warm and then just froze overnight with some freezing rain too uh yeah so everything was super icy the next morning and that was fun yeah I bet we’ve only had about six inches fall here um it was just the other day so um not too bad yet not yet um so let’s just get right into things um the Ottawa Senators um has anybody ever heard of drama coming out of the Senators organization I know we don’t see it too often um but somehow some way they’re probably going to end up for having to Forfeit another first round pick for all of this um but we’re um we’re going to jump right into this whole uh Brady kachuck and the New York Rangers thing so for those of you that aren’t fully up to speed on things Larry Brooks put out an article on the New York Post uh and said that the Rangers are going to something along the lines of the Rangers are going to aggressively Target Brady kachuck and or are actively targeting Brady kachuck um and so everybody was like whoa this could be something um and especially with like Chris kryder mik benad Jacob trouba at the time um like so many names on their way out of New York and all of a sudden Brady kachuck name comes up well just 40 minutes later Ian so in the tweet that Liam Brook um Larry Brooks put out uh he said uh the Rangers are targeting kachuck and what could be a Whopper and then Ian Mendes who is a brilliant brilliant man uh went on the sor.com and looked up the synonyms for Whopper and screenshotted it and the synonyms were lie story um Unfaithful and just made up and so he posted that and it was hilarious Bruce garok posted an article saying um a well-placed source called it utter BS um and that it’s totally false and then we’ve heard from Darren Dreer there’s nothing going on then we heard from Michael anlow and that’s kind of where the story gets really interesting um it happens all the time that names come out and then it gets denied whatever but Michael anlow um said there’s never been a conversation about Brady kachuk wanting to leave or the team wanting to trade him never even been a thought um and this is uh we just passed the year mark of Michael llau being in Ottawa Dayton he did a great job covering his first year um on an article for the hockey writers and this is the third time Bru’s name has come up in trade rumors that have been completely false so he uh accused the Rangers indirectly accused the Rangers of uh soft tampering which we all know that the league just put out a big memo saying we’re going to crack down on tampering it’s going to be a big fine um and there’s going to be a lot of consequences too that’s the rundown of it um Chris jury and the New York Rangers said that’s uh irresponsible allegation and to talk to Gary Batman Dayton what are your thoughts on all of it so there’s there’s a lot to sort out there um I never bought it for a second that Brady kachu was in trade talks he is the face of the franchise it’s everything would have to go catastrophically wrong and I know the Senators aren’t in a great place right now things are not going like most things are not going right this is not a catastrophic collapse they still have a lot of young talent and they are continuously improving they’re making strides it’s not moving much forward this year but they’re still at least mild progress as as much as we’ve kind of crapped on how this team is doing this year and I think deservedly so they they haven’t been performing to what they should be um there there’s some stuff that is going right so that’s not a Time to ever talk about trading your captain who’s I he’s not 25 years old yet is he I think he just turned 25 i d turned yeah like barely at that cut off and that’s no like no way would he be going anywhere let alone to the Rangers like if there’s a worst team for history in trading with the Ottawa Senators I don’t think it’s like anyone tops the Rangers the M mik aad trade is arguably one of the worst trades in franchise history because it wasn’t just zad for brassard the Senators added a draft pick it was worse than you think it was yeah it was a second round pick too it’s not like it was like a fourth or fifth yeah it was awful one of the worst trades I think I’ve ever seen like outside of any franchise just terrible absolutely terrible um so like I don’t think that is going to be taken likely especially trading for you know a a franchise player like kachak um and then yeah and low just comes out and says it like this is somebody’s trying to mess with the team and we’re going to get to the bottom of it and I think it’s pretty telling that Drury said this is bad accusations and just go talk to Gary bman which to me sounds like somebody messed up and they’re not fessing up yeah and so then there’s the conversation of whether it is or isn’t tampering um and so Kevin weeks so my assumption here and this is nothing but an assumption is uh as soon as Ann laau came out and said um the soft tampering thing somebody from the Rangers texted Kevin weeks and said will you put this out there and say that um there’s been no internal discussions uh about getting Brady kachuck will you put this out there so that was kind of them covering themselves obviously they can text Kevin weeks and say whatever um and I mean I’m sure Kevin weeks like he has um a lot of pride in his work but if that’s what he’s told that’s what he’s told um and so they’re just out there covering their butts I don’t know how do you prove I mean unless you like subpoena their phone records or something how do you prove that there was any tampering at that level like cuz they didn’t reach out to Brady kachak that’s a known fact they didn’t reach out to the Senators whatever um so how do you like do you look at Larry Brooks’s phone and see um who told him that I I don’t know I don’t know how that’s going to work with this Crackdown on tampering Paul what are your thoughts well I think you raised a good point I mean how do you prove it answer you can’t really so my question for andlau is why did you throw the hissy fit that you threw and I maybe I’ll get shot here in Ottawa for characterizing this comments as a hissy fit but come on um you know you need to put your money where your mouth is if you’re going to make an accusation like that uh then bring a formal complaint I was reading the the uh the rules and it’s set out there clearly if you believe there’s tampering then there here’s the process for bringing a complaint and he hasn’t done it uh and you know when he’s put on the spot well exactly that why haven’t you uh well he kind of shuffles around and gives a mey mouth uh response to it um I have no idea what what is soft tampering as opposed to tampering beats the hell out of me and you know I I don’t know what he expects the league to do with an accusation of soft temp tampering I saw an interview with Gary bman uh I’m not sure when it was might have been yesterday or early today and he kind of smiled and dismissed this he said look um no one’s brought any evidence of anything and and we’re not investigating any allegations of tampering so and the Rangers you know they came right out and said this is a ridiculous accusation um and so we look to the uh commissioner to uh weigh in in on this thing so I don’t know if I think if he had to do that over again whe whether it was a pit of a fit a peak I’m not sure but it it was an ill-considered move in my opinion to to make that accusation so I look at the comments that he made and he didn’t directly say the New York Rangers have been soft tampering he was very smart with the way he worded it he said um I don’t know if it’s Larry Brooks just making things up or if he has a really really bad Source but if it’s coming from the team then I wonder if that’s a case of soft tampering so he didn’t directly say uh the New York Rangers are tampering and so that’s kind of like he kind of covered himself a little bit with his words um which is a good thing because then he can’t get in trouble um I’m GNA actually completely disagree with you um [Laughter] shocker uh but with the uh the fact that like you said you’re going to get shot for saying that he threw a hissy fit and BL blah blah that’s exactly what this team needs they haven’t had somebody back them up before uh Eugene Melnick sat in an office and traded away the good players because he wouldn’t pay them um and now I mean sure it’s a nice thing to not have the owner as involved as um like well Eugene Melnick was involved because it was negative but he was involved in everyday stuff but he’s coming out here he’s been here for uh here in Ottawa for a year and he’s coming and backing the captain he’s backing the Cornerstone of this franchise uh and he’s saying listen uh he’s putting out the fire we haven’t had any conversations with Brady kachuck um and so it’s I think it’s a fantastic thing for him to shut it down immediately for the team sake and Brady kachuck sake because could you imagine your Brady kachuck and that’s three times in a year that all of a sudden everybody’s saying you want out you’re getting traded and this and that yet you’re the captain of a team well I I don’t know what backing his team means um you know so you know a journalist Larry Brooks at the the New York Post comes out with a report and says that this the Rangers are targeting uh to Chuck uh it would be perfectly acceptable if the Rangers went that they as the organization went to the Ottawa Senators organization and said how about a trade and that hasn’t happened and there’s no evidence that they went around around and tampered and a tamper is when the Rangers go to to Chuck himself or his agent and propose a trade so I I I don’t understand what what the backing up of the team is here um you know there are better if look if he wanted to reassure to Chuck that he’s not on the trading block there were better ways to do this than than throw a hissy fit in the press that he frankly he can’t back up um you know at one point you know he’s I take your point he is weaving back and forth here uh first it’s the Rangers that are soft tampering then he backs away from that and says no no no the problem is uh the uh the media is uh putting out false information so is is your quarrel with the media or is it with the Rangers I don’t understand Michael um you know and if your quarrels with the med putting out fake news well I don’t know call Donald Trump and see how he handles that I I don’t know see but it’s also tampering if the Rangers tell Larry Brooks to put this out because then you’re putting the idea in Brady kck’s mind you’re also um you’re then trying to incentivize him to come to New York and you’re talking about um whatever so he’s not sure where the report came from whether Larry Brooks made it up or it was given by the Rangers or somebody from another team and he didn’t specifically say the Rangers he he could have said um he just said any other team and so that’s I mean like you’re I think that’s where the soft tampering comes from is because um you’re putting that idea out there just to try and get drama started and to get people sweating and get the idea in Brady kachuck head to go play in Manhattan well fact that oh no go ahead Paul well like I said I I think there are probably better ways to if you want to reassure to Chuck if that’s all you want to do there’s better ways to do it than this and sure and I think where the problem is it’s not like one of the three of us bro it it’s Larry Brooks he’s one of he’s the biggest Rangers reporter um out there um and no discredit to all the three of us but um like we’re not we’re not to the level that Larry Brooks is well was at I don’t know where his reputation sits right now um but I don’t know it’s when you put something like that out there and you’re Somebody Like Larry Brooks um I don’t know if you remember the um the video of John torella with the Rangers and Larry Brooks in the uh press conference but that was a funny clip so look that up if you if you don’t remember that um but like he’s been around forever and he’s been the top reporter in for the Rangers for quite a while now um or one of the top so it’s not like it’s a nobody doing that’s like Bruce garok going out and saying um the Senators are targeting paner and and then panarin’s like well would vot Ottawa he wouldn’t but yeah that’s what I was going to say um that the fact that it is Larry Brooks makes it seem like there is something going on and I understand why Michael andlau would be ticked at these comments and sure maybe he did overreact a little bit I I can see that side um but it is three times that somebody has just kind of come out and said oh oh you guys are trading Brady kachak and he’s like that’s no I’ve never had a phone call nobody’s ever said anything Brady hasn’t said anything there’s been no ask and so he’s frustrated but I think he also thinks maybe he can’t do anything about it because the league is just going to punish them anyways because how many times has he been punished already in his like what year and a half of owning the Senators you’re in a month 1 months right like he has sorry no I was just going to say t you know the whole the problem here is tampering you can’t prove tampering um you know I know the league issues memos on it but uh I don’t think anybody listens or even reads the memos it’s it’s uh almost unenforceable so you know the question I’d have for anlow is knowing that is this the hill you want to die on and apparently he does yeah I don’t know I think if it is serious enough accusation and andl does want to pursue it there are methods of figuring out if something was done um and I think if they go that route then people are losing their jobs right I don’t think andlau is in risk of losing his job he would lose reputation for it for sure but you know you can dig through someone’s emails and you can subpoena someone’s phone records like that’s that’s you can do that it’s not easy or fun or you know that it takes a ton of time but it it could be done and if they are serious about it they could pursue that I just feel like andlau might be a little trigger shy because if it proves he’s wrong the league might just say well you don’t get your first- round pick anymore well if if he does it I’ll tell you what guys I’ll buy the popcorn we’ll sit back and watch the fun so that’s that’s fair I’m pretty safe in sasketchewan so I I’ll do that I’ll send you some yeah fantastic all right so we’ll move on from that for now I don’t think there’s going to be any more news on that but if the if there is then obviously we’ll talk about it next week um but let’s move on to the goal tending so um over the past week and a half week or so um Lena Sark has really found his Groove he’s been fantastic for four games in a row now um Anton forsberg has not to put it lightly um so Anton forsberg has started uh 11 games this year he has two shutouts outside of those two shutouts so his other nine games of the season do either of you know how many games he has a save percentage over 900 out of the other nine games these games are never fun Jacob I like them I have fun what is it zero it’s one it’s one so three games he has a save percentage over 900 two of them are shut outs great good for you it was against uh Seattle and Utah congratulations like I don’t know um and the only other game that he has a 900 or better was against New Jersey where it was still a 3-1 loss so he’s not instilling much confidence in the fans he’s not instilling much confidence in uh the team they don’t play very well in front of him either um or you know what actually they do they do play pretty well in front of him against the Islanders they had 12 shots and they lost 42 that’s completely unacceptable um so I like I don’t know I don’t know what you do about your backup do you have a solution do you call up forsburg or um soard no he’s injured do you give me Oran a chance do you trade for a backup I like what what do you do Paul well like you say uh you know there’s really no one down in Belleville that’s demonstrated even when they’re healthy that they’re NHL caliber goalies um there just aren’t any goal tenders out there floating around that general managers want to deal and if they did want to deal it Colorado’s already acquired them yeah uh you know the Senators are at the cap so when you’re at the cap uh you know it’s a tough uh a tough trade to uh engineer you know you’d probably have to package up forsberg as part of a two or three player trade and then you get into okay how do we line up salaries how do we line up the term um so I just don’t see any way out of this other than uh rehabilitate them try it anyway way because you know he doesn’t have to be a a vzna trophy winner all he has to do is be good enough to keep them in the games that that uh all Mark’s not going to play and you know allmark pay plays what the most he’s ever played in the year is 50 games so between here and the end of the year you’re GNA have to tap forsburg for what um 20 games maybe uh if he can just keep them in um I’d argue that you know if you look at his numbers he’s not far off in terms of safe percentage and goals against from what an NHL average goenda you know he’s gonna have to improve a little bit he he may be a horse you can ride um and you know to be fair to the guy I you know I I heard you talk Jacob about the Islanders game I took a bit of a different takeaway from that um to two goals that the Islanders scored were the fault of ottawa’s Defense they were I thought I was watching a junior a game uh I think Jensen and um and uh Sanderson were involved in those goals and and they just missed their coverage uh in front of the net I don’t know that I can blame those goals on uh forsberg so and I can hear that argument that’s an ongoing problem with Ottawa is the defensive coverage Counterpoint to that would be you need Jolie to make a save like there’s only 12 shots um doesn’t matter what defensive coverage you get um could be a three on0 you just you need more than nine saves in 60 minutes yeah no wasn’t his best game but um I you know your the question is okay what do you do about it um not sure there’s anything you can do about it but okay Dayton what are your what are your thoughts on borberg right now like is he going to get better he wasn’t last year he’s actually uh one save percentage Point worse than he was last year um do you do you ride it out do you give Mir Lan a chance do you trade for somebody um you call up Malcolm suban I mean I think all of those are valid uh he is really struggling this year and I wonder if it is maybe a confidence thing goalies can go through those you know significant slumps that they need to work through before they can get kind of back to their Rhythm and so I think probably a stint in the miners would help him the most I think there’s a reason that forsberg was a waiver claim and I think he’s been on waivers multiple times in his career yeah because he lacks consistency he’s always lacked consistency he has some really bright moments like he did in Ottawa he’s had some really bad moments too um and you know I think he is currently playing significantly below average goal tending he’s 13 points below League average right now yeah he’s also allowed 30 goals on 241 shots um on like among the goalies who have played at least 10 games that ranks 42 um in terms of shots like he’s not facing that many shots and he’s allowing a lot of goals like that’s he’s still also the bottom quarter maybe even yeah uh yeah the bottom quarter of the league in save percentage with so few shots um that’s that’s really concerning so I think if I’m in charge I send him back down to the miners if he gets claimed great he got 3 million bucks free on cap space and if he’s not he gets dispensed some time with Belleville who are doing you know they’re doing okay um maybe you can call up Levi marinan get him to play a few more games like you’re not going to develop a goalie when they just don’t play and currently the uh the Belleville goalies are playing once a week it’s it’s a pretty tough rotation for all of them there so bring up marilin and he’s been the most consistent um he deserves some shots and I think he surpassed soard at this point uh sard’s struggled with injuries this year and currently on the injured reserve if I recall correctly um yeah uh I think it’s just it’s time to cut that cord and send him down and whatever happens happens and bring up one of the young guys who needs to get some more NHL starts yeah I’m I’m going through right now I can’t even find a goalie on this list that would even potentially be available um like I look at Utah Carell Vela has having a really good season um and then they still have Conor Ingram would they be willing to move one of them um VTEC vanich and San Jose he’s not doing great but they have um they have uh yav askarov coming up that they could kind of figure something out with it’d be nice if Ottawa had yonas Corpus Alo [Laughter] don’t even hey he’s got a 909 save percentage that’s that’s a lot higher than anybody Ottawa has or has had who play better hockey yeah I don’t know I I don’t there’s no solution the only two that would come to mind that are even available um would be John Gibson and Tristan Jerry definitely don’t want um either of them either of them especially if they’re capit like John Gibson I can understand F but not while you have um no not while you have wmar signed so and then Scott Wedgewood just got traded um Eric com’s not going anywhere yeah vly hoo’s in the mine like there’s no options no and like never say never they managed to trade Corpus Salo who I thought had an untradeable contract um and so maybe there is somebody that we’re not considering that is available that would be a great fit and would take forsberg as a as an exchange it’s possible um I just don’t see it and I would just I’d go the easy route send him down flipping for a young guy or flipping for suban you know those guys haven’t been doing too bad most uh most GMS in the league understand that once a golender gets out of Ottawa they just uh enjoy a Renaissance right just rise from Flames so is true yeah it’s a safe bet so we didn’t come up with with the solution for gold hending um not our job we don’t get paid the big bucks like Steve stos does and Dave pulan does zero to my salary yeah really though I actually uh I heard uh something about Dave Pand the other day um he so when he was playing with the Philadelphia Flyers in the NHL um he would spend the summer working on Wall Street in the offseason I found that incredibly interesting I don’t know if that’s like a public thing or not but I thought that that was a very very interesting um tidbit about so he’s a smart guy apparently probably pays better than TSN so yeah probably um all right so we’ll move on um we’re gonna wrap things up with Tim stutzel um he’s been absolutely dominant this season um he’s leading the team with 34 points in 27 games um I believe that’s 15th in the league or unless that changed over the last day or two I don’t know he he’s been the heart and soul of this team he’s been unreal he’s uh he has three more three less points than Conor McDavid he’s tied with he has one less Point than Jack Hughes um he has more points than artmi panarin uh Matthew kachuck obviously Brady kachuck Quinn Hughes um bar of missed some time like he’s been he’s been unreal he’s among the top players in the league right now um what’s his ceiling is this like the best we’re going to see of Tim suil um right now he’s on Pace for uh let me figure this out real quick 103 points 103.2 Five Points so 103 points um is this the best we’re going to see of Tim stutzel what do you think Paul well you know 103 points uh puts him on uh in the same category as Austin Matthews right who last year scored 107 points uh Leon dry Sidle 106 last year uh ranin 104 JT Miller so uh you know I I I suspect you know can he get Beyond those guys maybe not this year I wouldn’t bet on it I think he’s peaked uh for now but he’s you know he’s young guy right who knows what the future is going to bring and I go back to a uh a drubbing I got a few weeks ago when the question came up as to whether stla could be the uh best German in the NHL and uh I said he could and I think you guys disagreed with me so uh now I’m saying n a boo boo um maybe he will so take that yeah I mean like right now I mean dry Sidle is an unreal goal scorer like he’s got almost twice as many goals as stel does but he’s only two points ahead of Tim stoel right now and as much as I am absolutely a leon ddal Defender um and I think that he is an incredible um player on his own he does also play with Conor McDavid which certainly helps his goal scoring um but he he I defend him he’s not a passenger to McDavid at all uh but it’s it’s going to be a lot closer than I expected and I I fully admit that I was team Leon for this season Dayton what are your thoughts on Tim stutz’s start so far incredible uh I think he is like you said the heart and soul of this team he is doing fantastic um what is his height his I think I don’t I don’t really foresee him getting much past 100 points I think you could hit Triple digits um at least a couple of times um like he is a a true kind of cerebral Puck mover he is a very very intelligent player he’s a great hard worker and I’m thinking back to the the world juniors that I saw that like he could kind of command the play and whatever he did everyone on the ice responded to because he was that talented um I wondered if that would maybe limit his offensive abilities when I was first looking at his uh his draft you can go back and and look that I capped his points I think at around 90 he’s already hit that he’s 22 he’s going to get better than that almost definitely um yeah I I think he’s just like he’s he’s really smart and most of his benefits of the team won’t be on points like he can move the puck really well he can score goals really well but setting up things and making other players better around him I think is going to be his his absolute you know that that is what he brings to the Senators he is that kind of player that you can kind of build a team around along with Brady kachak who is that you know heart and soul type of player you know wears his heart on a sleeve will really get into the you know the face of he’s a perfect Captain right um so I’m like I’m struggling to find a a player to compare him to that isn’t like overshadowing maybe schuts is like a poor man’s Mario Lemieux like he’s not ever going to hit Lemieux levels please nobody take me out of context on that um but I can definitely see him being kind of that Commander that makes everyone better around him especially playing on that first line like who would have heard of Rob Brown if he didn’t play with Mario Lemieux and maybe most people listening don’t know Rob Brown but he he had a lot of points when he was on Lemieux’s wing and that’s that’s I think schutz’s impact and effect on the Senators as he grows older yeah absolutely um so to wrap this episode up I have another trivia question Tim stutzel number five all time for German scorers with 281 points who are the top four well you got to say Leon drle he’s number one with 886 other Germans um who played forever well um Marco Sturm he’s number two with 487 yeah uh why am I uh Christian aoff he is number four with 339 you’re just missing number three and I’ll be honest might be a I might sound stupid here haven’t heard of the guy uh is it Sasha go it is not I know he played for number eight with uh 188 okay any idea Paul you got me longtime Buffalo saber in what in what decade the 90s uh early uh the 2000s so we played in Buffalo from 2002 until 2013 I don’t know how I haven’t heard of this guy ah uh Yen heck yes there we go very impressive so Tim stel is uh about 60 points behind Christian aoff for fourth and then another 120 behind hash um for third so he’s climbed the ranks very very quickly um I mean like Mor Ider JJ petka and NCO Sturm aren’t going to catch him anytime soon so he’s it’s all uphill from here so um how many games did aoff play by the way because you said he’s 80 points away yes he is he he’s 60 points away from aoff or 58 yeah um 789 games to Tim St was 312 yeah yeah aoff played for a long time and that’s what happens when you’re on a defenseman right so exactly um and even like uh HH he played 833 Sturm played 938 so like he’s gonna pass them very quickly yeah he is going to be at least top two in German’s alltime NHL easily um yeah for sure whether he surpasses dry Sidle I guess we’ll find out dry Sidle is incredible I’ve always been a big dry CLE fan just like you yeah um but he’s second Tim schel is second in points per game among all Germans all time um I I think like Paul though uh it’s it’s a lot closer than I expected yes it’s gonna be gonna be interesting to
