[Music] you know obviously the Maple Leafs have had a disappointing playoff exit last year um and there’s no doubt about that there’s a lot of fans that are going to point to that and say you know why are we resigning Mitch Marner why are we resigning Mitch Marner I have been an advocate of saying I mean you just at the end of the day you just got to do it unless you have a better plan to win right so we did get an update from Darren Drager that uh I mean a lot of the Insiders not just him but also Pier LeBron has touched on this as well that he really does believe that the contract extension is going to come together at some point likely before the um become before they’re essentially alluding to the fact that he’s probably not going to become a UFA now I have predicted that I think that it’s going to happen in season much the same that William neanders contract did for the reason like I always keep Ane on what the Insiders are saying and when they’re starting to all allude to like okay you know it’s coming together it’s coming together you know that that is pretty promising for getting the contract done in season like I’m pretty sure William neander signed it in season it was about a little bit over halfway through I can’t remember exactly what month it was uh but they did resign him now with William neander he is absolutely worth that amount of money I mean the guy’s on Pace for like 55 ghouls um now there’s two schools schols of thought here um there is the school of thought of why aren’t you just waiting why aren’t you just waiting now I’m going to push back to that mindset a little bit because you don’t know like you you have to manage human emotions in this if the leaf start screwing with him there’s nothing to stop him from going to UFA and I am sorry but if you lose a guy that’s on Pace for a 111 points let’s be clear he’s an upper echelon Elite offensive talent in the I know he hasn’t put it together in the playoffs but how many times have we seen other players in the playoffs leave Toronto and have success in other teams Zack Heyman for example right he’s been fantastic in the playoffs in my opinion but he wasn’t that good in Toronto in the playoffs so there’s something deeper going on here um uh than just that oh he just can’t win in the playoffs cuz I guarantee you Mitch Marner will go to another team and you you really don’t think that he’ll have success in the playoffs I absolutely do now the real question is is how much is he going to get paid now the Insiders all allude to the fact that agents like to go from the perspective of cap percentage which is actually completely fair by the way because you’re going to be signing him to a long-term deal I think he’s probably going to sign for eight years um I don’t know why the lease wouldn’t want to go for eight years it locks up cost certainty you know he’s only 27 so if you lock him up that will lock him up to around his mid-30s he’s a smaller skilled player he’ll probably be able to perform pretty well into his 30s much like you know guys like Taris and stamp goes will you’re still going to get a good performance albeit in the later part of his prime but the real question is is what is the dollar total and can the Leafs afford it now of course they could do it the aav is starting to concern me a little bit but if you actually look over the cap percentage into the future because the cap is again is going to go look go up it’s completely fair for the agent and the player to look at the cap going up um and but here’s the thing even if you get him at a certain dollar amount you’re still going to get the benefit of the cap going up and up and up and up and up you know three four five six years into the future which is going to be good for the Maple Leafs in my opinion right that’s why you want to sign him to eight years now again I understand the criticism of signing Mitch Marr you look at his Playoff stats and he hasn’t been the same player in the regular season the playoffs you could say that for a lot of the leaf Stars William neander has been I think like above average but he hasn’t been a stud either although he’s probably been the best of all of them scoring clutch goals and whatnot but that’s a that it’s a it’s a fair argument that people make now when I debate this with people it’s always it’s always how can I say this it’s it’s always like that they’ll make a fair point and then I make this point to them what trade are you going to make that makes the lease better in their contending window okay so you can’t just trade him you also need to trade him and make the team at least the same skill level but different right or preferably better what trade is going to do that now yes you could point to that Matthew could chuck going to Florida Panthers that’s a re but is that trade out there probably not right so you’re literally going to give away 1100 well he’s never broken 100 points I get that but you’re literally going to give up a 100 plus point Point player he’s probably going to hit 100 points unless he gets injured uh uh uh this year for for what some picks and maybe a decent player you change the the look of your team can you imagine with Matthews being injured if we didn’t have Mitch Marr performing I mean this guy scored a hatti last night he looked unbelievable last night like the you know you just you just have to pinch your nose and you have to sign him in my opinion now if if you have a different opinion on this please drop it down low I have no problem debating this but I don’t know I I really do think the maple leafes should just resign Mitch Marner I’m starting to settle into that very comfortably now Mitch marner’s Camp is looking for about 13 or 14 million from this article um which on that that actually does make a lot of sense again I’m not saying that that’s what he’s going to end up getting but that’s it probably makes a lot of logical sense right like that’s what they’re looking for which I mean it’s a negotiation that’s what’s going to happen right now William neander got 11.5 right so you know what what I what I would do is I would start around there so you look at it 11.5 to 14 something like that and then you then you’re going to probably want to select some kind of Middle Ground around there but the starting point is going to be 11.5 he’s not going to take 11.5 I’m just saying that’s a starting point right I’m going to tell you right now I’m going to give my prediction for this contract I think it’s going to look between 12 and half to 12.75 at 8 years that’s exactly what I think this contract is going to be book at right now I think it’s going to happen in season it’s going to be 12.5 to 12.75 on an 8-year contract that is my final prediction uh uh for this contract but it does seem from what the Insiders are all saying now we have LeBron we have dragger touching on this they’re they’re almost certain this is going to happen Drager did allude to the fact that before free agency I think it’s going to happen in season but we’ll see if I’m right or wrong about that um anyways I just wanted to touch on uh Darren dreger’s comments on uh Mitch
