how’s it going Yankee fans welcome back to fir side Yankees with your boys Alex and Ryan so obviously things are going to be a little bit more slow and steady over the next couple of weeks as we really approach spring training in March it’s a long time between now and then but Yankees have a couple of moves to make we know the big one is in the infield whether it be going out and signing a free agent going out and trading for somebody and today we’re to break down Nolan arado he’s the one guy that’s been linked to the Yankees pretty aggressively over the last couple days we don’t know if this is real or not but we figured why not do a full player analysis and breakdown of Aron so that way we can get a better understanding of is he a good fit why would he be a a an asset for the Yankees why are they even interested in reportedly um I think there are some reasons but most of them have to do with run prevention and defense and not offensive upside you know this is a guy that was really good with the Rockies you know kind of came back down to earth with the Cardinals he’s always been an elite defender on the hot corner so that is certainly a benefit for the Yankees and I think that that would be something that we’ll talk about but in addition to that the financial part of acquiring arado what does that look like the Yankees got pretty creative this offseason with the financials I’ll break that down I love to talk about the financial part of these things and I kind of break down the salary and and luxury tax allocations because it does affect how we do things in the future and the Yankees did some things this off season that will impact the future in a significant way uh but Ryan you know before we dive into Aon a and kind of all the different topics we end up exploring in these episodes how you do today my friend I’m doing all right you know we’ve got some cold weather in New York which has certainly presented uh some issues to say the very least it’s cold uh you know my uh my fingies they’re cold uh my toes you know I had to wear had like three blankets on this night last night uh but you know in regards to the action going on in Major League Baseball a lot of news a lot of signings a lot of transactions over the weekend and today uh over the evening we found out about shanai going back to the Mets I think that’s like a 1: a.m. Jeff pass and bomb we had another pass and bomb at like 5 in the morning I have to wake up at 5 take my little brother wrestling and so uh you know I’m driving him there and I’m and I drop him off and I’m wait you know making sure that he walks inside I check my phone I’m like Jo Peterson the Rangers wow uh and then Walker bu a player who the Yankees had some interest in earlier in the offseason not sure if they continued that interest after they signed uh Max Reed he signed a one year with the Boston Red Sox and now the Yankees are kind of like in this mode where we’ve talked about it there’s one obvious hole left on this roster and it’s the infield and Nolan lonado seems like the most not likely player to be a Yankee but like a lock to get traded right like he feels like he’s gone right um we’ve talked about Brandon La is an option you don’t get that same sense that like the rays are pushing him out of the door basically we’ve talked about Brandon Donovan same thing with low uh well maybe to to a much lesser extent uh definitely doesn’t feel like he’s getting pushed out the door if anything the quietness around Donovan’s trade market would indicate maybe the Cardinals are telling teams no on him uh but when it comes to arado he is someone who’s going to get moved we can ba you can basically guarantee it um now Aeron we’ve talked about his offensive profile it does not fit New York very well I have a lot of concerns about how his Bat would play in The Bronx I know a lot of people will mention you know just because a guy’s bat doesn’t play in The Bronx uh you know in previous years doesn’t mean that the New York Yankees are that doesn’t mean that ronado will not play in The Bronx you know with the Yankees but you’re talking a lot about pedigree versus projected production right over the last four really over the last five seasons arado has one Elite year and that’s his 2022 season his 2021 season I’d say you take that from him if you got that that was that 112 WRC plus 4.3 War 34 home runs you would certainly take that if you’re the New York Yankees uh but arnado has not been that hitter uh you know over the last two years 106 WRC Plus in 2023 with 26 home runs again I think you and I would agree we would take that offensive production we’re just not certain we’re going to get it because this past year he seemed to Bott him out he had a a 102 WRC plus uh he had a uh 297 expected weight on base average he had his worst Barr rate ever at 3.2% uh there are concerns about his ability to hit the ball the other way because he’s never really done it I know his Chase rate went down uh but again the batted ball data really took a hit and Alex this is someone who hasn’t hit an opposite field home run since 2019 as a right-handed batter there are serious concerns about his offensive uh offensive production here and I think we can agree like that’s I I don’t think that’s changed for us I don’t think that’s going to change for us regardless of the Yankees get him or not we’re going to sit here and still say the bat doesn’t really play at Yankee Stadium um but the one thing that does become interesting and I think as the infield Market has evolved or maybe hasn’t evolved um it starts to become a question of CH it starts BEC a game of chicken for the Yankees are the Yankees willing to Blink and make a move now or are they going to wait out the market potentially let arado pass by and answer what is a questionable trade market you don’t know who’s a guarantee to get moved in the midd infield the middle infield isn’t full of established names the free agent Market has Gaber Hassan Kim Alex bregman one of those players is definitely out of the Yankees price range Hassan Kim might also be out of the Yankees price range and glaber tour is may be someone they’re not willing to bring back Alex if the choice is uh between NL arado or absolutely no body else right who else right who is who like what is what what are you what are you where are you at are you going to go for iron not are you saying bite the bullet or would you just say all right you know what we’ll just we’ll roll with what we’ve got internally it’s a good question and this is what leads me to the financial aspect of this kind of situation so we know that the Cardinals tried to trade Aon a to the Houston Astros they were willing to take on 15 to 20 million of his salary and Aron vetoed it he was like I don’t want to go to Houston he’s a California guy he preferably would go to the Dodgers I think um but you know he’s doesn’t get to choose that the Cardinals are going to go to the highest bidder whoever is willing to take on the most of his money now the problematic situation with Aon is he has three years left on his contract right this is a player who’s 33 years old he’s going to be 34 next year by the time his deal expires he’ll be 36 37 that is going to come with a significant downturn in production and guys Aron is always already a very average offensive player very very average and he doesn’t play well in Yankee Stadium the one thing that ronado does do he plays pretty much every freaking day and that’s something that Paul gold Schmid also provides consistent Health now the Yankees have dealt with a lot of injury over the last couple years whether it be Rizzo or anybody else on that infield um you know DJ lameu obviously his his decrease in production has been well documented um I do think that at this point in time Aron will have a 25 .5 million luxury tax hit for the three seasons the Yankees would be consuming that is assuming that the Cardinals don’t pay anything now we already heard rumors that the Yankees were willing to give Marcus strowman I say willing to give I said they wanted to give Marcus strowman at his $18.5 million salary and offload that and get Aron in return and probably take on all of that money my problem with getting ronado is is not that you know you’re you’re not going to get great defense because you are it’s that well offensively he’s going to be average he’s not going to play well in Yankee Stadium we’ll talk about how he fits in the Bronx specifically I know a lot of people in the comments saying like stop thinking about the stats he makes us better I mean guys the stats is all we have to work off of like that that is the data that allows us to formulate an opinion otherwise what are we doing here we’re watching him his highlight videos because if you watch highlight videos I certainly can assume there’s a lowl video out there you don’t want to watch um so I do think that when it comes to actually an analyzing a player you have to look at the numbers you have to look at the stats you have to look at the fit and we’re doing that for you so that you don’t have to um and I think that’s that’s that’s pretty good value for you guys um to learn about a player and Aron you know he doesn’t fit well here the financial aspect of it you’re consuming 25.5 million in luxury tax salary for three straight Seasons that’s going to strap you from doing a lot of other moves in the future and you’re basically just taking on a very average player now the defense is super valuable right but I think most people would agree they’d rather a much better offensive player than a than a really good defensive player you know AKA Juan stto really good offensive player horrible defensive player you could even look at Aaron judge and center field last year and say the same thing dude want an MVP not because of his defense that’s for certain because of his offense um and I think that that’s really what we look at Alex fugo good Defender bad offensive player he’s gone so yeah we’re going to Value offense more than defense at times the infield obviously run prevention is important ideally you’d find a balance of those two things you can marry those two things but 25.5 million Aron’s not worth that in my opinion and he’s certainly not worth that for three straight Seasons unless the Cardinals were willing to take on half of that contract or at least a large portion of it to take that money down to maybe 16 17 million per season if you can make that work maybe I would consider it then but the Yankees got a little bit creative right with how they are managing their their money right now the Jonathan Leisa deal has not been reported yet so there’s no money allocated to the estimated luxury tax they have a 2026 player option for him which is good but right now the Yankees are about 299 million um in luxury tax estimated uh salary so the last threshold is 301 million they’re not going to cross that they don’t want to cross that if you go get Aron you’re going to cross that it doesn’t make Financial sense for the Yankees to do this unless they’re taking on a significant amount of money and they they manag to offload marus strowman’s contract at the same time so you know financially it makes no sense for us um I and I imagine they want to stay below that 3 out1 mark because that’s kind of where they’re hovering and I don’t think that you know I think that’s there’s a reason that they’re hovering right there they also restructured Max freeze contract very interestingly they reduced his salary hit this upcoming year for the next two years actually to $4.5 million and then it escalates to $31.5 million they’re saving $17 million on those two years so they could bring in a Paul gold Schmid so they could bring in other players and talented uh guys who are making a little bit more money like Cody Bellinger’s 26 million or 20 $5 million in luxury tax allocation so when you’re talking about the financial aspect of it Aron makes no sense unless they’re able to date unless the Cardinals are willing to take on a substantial amount of money you know Ryan how do you perceive this I think that’s the part that I’m looking at like Aron is he a fit in Yankee Stadium not necessarily he’s a great defender absolutely but he doesn’t even fit us financially so I don’t know how they’d have to get really creative to make a deal like that work yeah I agree the Yankees would have to do a lot in order for them to be able to um you know that I mean how how are they they have to do a lot in order for them to make that work and it’s a lot of maneuvering and and and financial posturing to just add a guy who has a lot of question marks and people will go you know this is kind of a comment we got in our video regarding Paul gch it was like you’re calling him League average he’s a former MVP it’s like we’re not calling his career League average he is not in his Peak Years A League average player we’re talking about the production you got last season from the player or the the production that last season had or that last season kind of gives you there so um you know if you look at 2024 right Paul goon had a 100 WRC plus that’s a League average hitter we’re going to describe it as a League average hitter Nolan ronado had a 102 WRC plus last season I’m going to describe that as a barely above average hitter if not just League average those kinds of hitters for Goldman’s case the batted ball datea is very good the batted ball data does suggest that there’s Improvement to be had at Yankee Stadium that’s why despite him not being our first pick for first base with or without sto he is someone that I think you and I can agree has upside that there’s a real chance that Paul goldmit lives up to what are pretty strong and favorable projections I do believe in The Savvy veteran um kind of presence that gold Schmid can bring this is a guy who has been an above average base runner basically every year of his career despite not having great speed in his latter years that’s a heavy indication of baseball IQ an excellent base rang decisions he takes bases at a clip that is quite surprising for someone uh who’s his age and size and and and and uh not size in like weight but like height and all that stff he’s like a short like guy who’s like 5’8 can run around um non ronado doesn’t strike me as that same kind of player not in terms of like baseball IQ but in terms of his baded ball data his exit Vos have plummeted from his 2023 season his bar rates have also plummeted from his 2023 season he pulls everything that means left field it has to be an ideal situation for him to hit the ball out of the yard that doesn’t exist at at Yankee Stadium that exists in very few ballparks uh Yankee Stadium plays to lefties you do that if non arado was left-handed I think you and I would agree yeah we would love this because if Nolan arado came over here and was left-handed we would have I think we would have already traded for him Alex I think that’s fair to say the Yankees would have already gotten know arnado he would have been here yesterday it would have been here months ago uh the problem is just that the power doesn’t play at Yankee Stadium if the Yankees acquire him they H they’re taking a significantly greater risk offensively than they are with Paul Goldman who bat can play here he does have the raw power to do it now if the question is which is the one I present to you bringing in noan arado or doing absolutely nothing in the infield I think you can make a very rational argument that noan AR ronado is better than what we have internally uh it depends on what your view of the team is how aggressive are you to try to make this team marginally better are you aggressive enough that you’re willing to kind of you know take on a bad contract for three years uh in order to try to maximize the window as much as you can with judge and um and and you also you know there’s opportunity cost right now you can’t get an infielder if you need one you cannot go out and acquire at the deadline of third basem do you want the flexibility to do so if that’s important I understand I still come back to if the Yankees have nothing else to go to the Yankees should PIV it back to glabber Torres because there’s familiarity there he solves the leadoff issue he may not get more than one year he’s someone that you can comfortably trade or bench in that scenario as well uh and you know again we have familiarity with glaver Torres we know his game we know his bat plays here there’s a little less concern that there’s going to be a sharp fallof at age 27 or age 28 so um you know I think it’s extremely important to look at um you know where the market is at and compare that to uh you know where what no ronado brings you and whether you should get him or not and it’s also important to knowe do you feel like the second base and third base Market has moved to the point where you need to desperation heave right now I don’t think the Yankees need to decide on who their third baseman or second baseman uh depending on where Jack has plays in this scenario I don’t think you have to worry about where they’re going to play or who that’s going to be on December 23rd I think you worry about that if bregman goes off the board if Hassan Kim goes off the board if Cay R Torres goes off the board if uh you know arado gets traded if some of the other infield options get moved someone I’ll have my eyes on is Gavin Lux because Ken rosenal linked Hassan Kim to the Dodgers there hasn’t been a lot of smoke on Hassan Kim have you heard anyone linked to him really it’s the Dodgers report is probably the first one I’ve heard in a while we’ve talked about Hassan Kim but the Yankees have never really been linked to him so uh I know Lux is someone that they do like that being the Yankees and if the Dodgers were to acquire Kim it moves Mook bets a second it creates an opening for Hassan Kim Max Muny would play Third first would play first and Lux is a left-handed bat so you know there are still players you could develop this Market hasn’t developed yet that’s kind of my takeaway here so you know if it’s all if it’s nothing or arado I think I’m arado instead of nothing but we haven’t reached a point of nothing yet so I hope the Yankees don’t desperation heave on Aron right so you know with that being said if it was a one-year deal for arado I could justify it I could convince myself like yeah this this this makes sense for the Yankees but it’s a three-year deal and three years of Nolan Aon a is going to stop you from going out and spending on Kyle Tucker next year you know what I mean like that’s that’s the impact that a $25.5 million luxury tax allocation has on a team that if you want to go out and bellry picks up his option at 26.6 million and you got Max freed and his contract’s escalating after 2026 you cannot afford to go out and get a Kyle Tucker because you’re going to be way over that $300 million luxury tax threshold financially it doesn’t make any sense like and as you said are we willing to just bite the bullet and stick labor Torres back into a spot now Ryan I’m going to ask you a question probably a big fat no but is there a world where you know I’m not even going to ask it I’m not even going to ask it it’s it’s a stupid question I mean what was it it was just it was just like if gaber’s range is not great at second base is he a better fit at third I actually don’t think that’s a stupid question I I think that’s why the Yankees approach gber about playing third base and if I’m gaver Torres and I see the market right now and where teams are at I would be open to playing third he should be open to playing third the reason I also say that is that unlike the last time the Yankees asked him which was in season not in the offseason uh you know I understand not wanting to make that switch midseason while you’re struggling offensively because remember the context of that at the time was gabber Torres was having the worst year of his career uh at the plate he was in his free agent year the Yankees had basically at that point guaranteed he wasn’t coming back by playing Third Base you’re learning a new position while also trying to find your swing again in your walk year I don’t really blame gber for not deciding to play third base or learn it midseason that being said in the off season he should 100% be open to playing Third Base because it would do better for his market and I agree if the yankes were able to get him to play Third that makes a lot more sense because his arm is good he’s always had a good arm his problem isn’t throwing accuracy or arm Talent it’s range as you mentioned Jazz Chism has excellent range Jazz chism’s strength is ranged now he does also have unbelievable arm Talent jazz is just an incredible defensive player for being honest he’s a very talented defensive player but he is better at second base because I think arm accuracy can kind of kill Jazz at times Gaber is going to have the benefit of playing the Hot Corner as you mentioned playing NE not having to rely his range as much and also playing next to vulpi I think part of what hurt Jazz and vulpi at times this is a couple of times this wasn’t a frequent issue was that these are both extremely athletic Defenders who can make plays that other players at their position cannot make and get to balls that other players at their position cannot get to that led to a lot of like them cutting each other off because a ball that vulpi would have to get to because Donaldson or DJ can’t get there is a ball jazz can get to a ball that you know Jazz may not be used like if you’re Jazz you may not be used to playing next to someone as talented as vulpi you may think this has to be my ball I can get to this ball maybe vulpi can’t but hey vul’s right there he can if you spread out the range to both sides of the infield you have a rangy Defender at shortstop you have a rangy Defender at second base the two places where you don’t have range are first base and third base with gold Schmid and hypothetically gber Tor in this scenario but both of them in call Gold Schmid’s case great scooper excellent baseball IQ uh Torres excellent arm Talent pretty good arm accuracy as well uh I think that would serve very well for both Defenders I think you make an excellent point I’m glad you asked this question I hope this is something we can talk about you know I hope this is something that is a larger conversation maybe on social media at some point uh but I think glaber absolutely profiles for third and if we let’s let’s not forget in 2017 the Yankees worked him out at third base because that was a position of weakness Chase Hedley uh you know was the incumbent at the time they’re just I just view the Yankees as a team where you know they have gotten creative with their defensive alignments before let’s see if they can do it once again because if they can and they do it at third this would be a really Savvy Edition and in glaber’s case could really really really boost his Market not just with the Yankees but elsewhere I know the Nationals and the angels I forget one of those two teams they asked him to play Third Base I don’t know what his answer was we don’t know that’s not public information but I think it’s a very very good question I’m very glad that you asked that I think it’s really that’s a fun conversation it’s interesting it’s interesting cuz I mean look if you look at his Savant page right he ranks in the seventh percentile in arm strength but I think that’s not indicative of his actual arm strength because second base he’s a little bit more laical a at second base it’s shorter you don’t want to throw hard at second you could make your throws worse the more accurate one would be uh can you pull up do you have the Sant page up I don’t because I don’t have it can you click to 2021 does it have arm strength for that year 2021 it’s going to make me like wait for it to like load hold on I’m in 2019 it’s not even it doesn’t even show actually I don’t think they started recording 2020 so 21 20 was 81st percentile 21 was 70th percentile remember in 21 he shifted second base during the year so when he was playing short when you had to test your arm Talent he had a Howitzer he’s got a good arm man he’s always had he’s a strong dude he’s not a fast guy he’s always profiled better for third base it’s very stunning that Gaber hasn’t played third base in his major league career because it makes so much sense right it does it just makes all horrible he’s a I mean let’s be real he’s a horrible defensive player at second base how much worse could at third I think that’s question problem going um it’s it’s going uh it’s going opposite to side you have to go to at third cuz going to third you’re going to um your glove side at uh second the problem has always been going kind of up the middle and if you talk about shifts right glaber has to shift his position a lot because shifts have been banned so where you your starting position is and your range are far more important post shift than they have been pre-shift look at his defensive numbers in 2022 the last year with the shift look at he had nine defensive runs saved and zero outs above average that was his best defensive season at second base then you look at 2023 it regressed 2024 regressed again that right it’s the range is always gav’s problem it’s not the arm and also you think about from double play perspective he’s felt it felt it’s always felt like he’s been tough with the glove transfer flipping the ball receiving the ball like third base is in a frequent cutof off position Third Base isn’t a frequent uh double play POS like you’re never going to be in a position where he’s Fielding like he’s feeling a throw on a double play at third base it’s very rare very rare does that ever it’s not a force out it’s usually a tag play at that point um he he’s going to be throwing the wall at a second maybe he’ll misfire a couple of those but uh honestly uh you live with it because most of his errors are Fielding errors not throwing errors this past season four throwing errors 14 Fielding errors the year prior nine Fielding six throwing the year before that five Fielding two throwing he has he had a year in 2021 he didn’t have a single throwing ER at second base now granted at shortstop he had some more throwing issues right uh than Fielding issues but shortstop is also a more difficult throwing position right it’s not across the diamond it’s kind of like weird angles he also like you have to get to a ball and you got to quickly rush and fire the throw it’s a very weird it’s a much more different position so you know I I think glaber can profly third but like it depends on number one glaber’s willingness to play Third Base number two obviously the Yankees willingness to bring him back and again we’re not at the point with the infield Market where we have to go oh crap go bring Gaber back to like you got to hurry this up you don’t have to do anything so yeah patience is important the ink of you know they’ll they’ll bring back maybe Tim Hill right now Alex it’s in like wait or SE mode take your pick at the best infield that you can get um and you know try to improve your Bullpen if you can and that’s basically it the Yankees did a lot of their heavy lifting I think that’s good for them no Panic moves no you know Frick you know I didn’t want to curse so I said Frick that sounds a little lame though uh damn we’re going to say damn yeah that’s a little that’s a little tougher I sound like a man now like damn we have have to get arado we have nothing else left damn we like could you you know we we poo pooed a I poo pooed a little bit on that gold Schmid move when it first came out but you kind of look at the market now Carl Santana it was revealed that once Cleveland was in he turned down an extra year from the Mariners to go to Cleveland and more money then you know in the situation of Nate Lao I think that the reliever traded to the Rangers is better than any guy we had uh you look at the situation with Pete Alonzo we’re not signing Pete Alonzo Christian Walker the qualifying offer same situation the Yankees would have been left with nobody they would have been left with Ty France and like praying that the Rays decide to move yand Diaz and the Rays having you buy your balls basically at first base we talked about like we have the pitching Market buy their balls and we were able to pull Devin Williams because of it imagine what the Yankees would have to go up for yni Diaz if the Rays had them bu their balls if if he even had the best offer on the table that’s the other thing too you know who else is desperate the Mariners what if the Mariners offer one of their pitchers for yandi then you end up with no one so I appreciate that they jump that they identified that the market was moving fast at first base I can retroactively appreciate understanding that Carlos Anno wasn’t going to come here once he went once Cleveland got involved and I can also appreciate you know clearly they did their due diligence because all these move happened basically after the Yankees won the nailor trade went down there were reports about weight gain being an issue we talked about that on this podcast is that going to be something the Yankees you know have reservations about so far I think the gold Schmid signing has aged well in the last 48 hours is that fair to say is that me being a homer I don’t think so yeah I mean no I I think for sure it aged well because like you said the market accelerated immediately after that acquisition we thought it was going to be a lot slower and it seemed like Paul goldm was the dam and the dam broke and everything just came crashing through at the same time um so I I think yeah you’re right in hindsight it definitely went faster than I thought it was going to go I thought the Yankees had a lot more time so you know that good job by Cashman by executing something that was going to make us better um and not put ourselves in a position where we were fighting from behind so I’ll take that I think that was a that was a good move for the Yankees in the end gabber at third base you know uh you know kind of reverting back to that for a second the range issues you can eliminate um yeah you’re going to have to live with some errors you’re going have to live with some mistakes but you’re going to have to live with those no matter where he’s playing that’s just the gabor’s experience but if you get the The Hitter that we got um during the second half of last year for a full season you’re not going to you’re not going to care about the the errors you’re not going to care about the problems um he just has to be a little bit more Twitchy a little bit more reactive sometimes he’s a little bit lazy and he’ll he’ll you know short arm throws or you know he’ll even just be delayed he won’t get the throws out fast enough against you know quicker players and that could be a problem so I I do think that he has a little bit more urgency it doesn’t seem that he wants to move to Third Base he keeps refusing it at every chance I bet you a team’s been out there like you said it’s been like hey will you go play third base for us I don’t know why he wouldn’t because Third Base markets are a lot better than second base markets if he was even decent at third base he would get paid way more than pay than playing uh second base there’s it’s hard to find good third baseman these days um on the open market so you know I wouldn’t be surprised um if he did make the transition if he commits himself but you know I do think it would be a viable option for him it should be at least I mean we’re giving gurus some career advice here man like you play Third Base you’re probably going to get some money because teams teams need third basem maybe the Mets get involved if you get it and you know when you get two big Market teams in your Market maybe the maybe the Red Sox are like you can play Third Base right you can you know we don’t want to play bregman they the ERS are like yeah you can play Third right you can play a little third we can make this work’s let’s make this work right um You have to be I’m not saying that gleber has to play Third to get a contract that’s not close to the truth he will sign with a major a major league team is going to give him guaranteed money and it will not be less than $10 million per year and it will definitely not be a one-year deal like $8 million it’ll be a one-year deal like 20 million maybe or like 15 million it’s not going to be no uh you know like it’s it’s it’s not going to be no Paul gold one year 12 doll BS right it’s going to be some serious coin um but you open your Market a little bit when you’re able to play other positions the problem with gber is that he’s a one position guy and he’s a bad Defender a really bad Defender not a bad Defender a really bad one at this point in time at the position there are obviously concerns about how he responds to you know outside noise we’ve seen G Gaber can look like a pressure player but the one thing I like kind of push back on and I got this comment a lot and I was talking about this a lot yesterday and I got this comment a lot I thought it was really dumb culture like glaber you bring him back and that’s bad for the culture it sets a bad like you know what culture is to me Alex winning that’s what it is people like glaber I know I feel like the locker didn’t didn’t dislike glor I guess it’s more so in the sense of like he’s mistake prone and that’s bad for the for to have a mistake prone player but I mean he he helped the offense significantly like I i’ arue the players loved I mean Aaron judge and Soto probably loved having glaber second half the year and again like I like winning that’s my number one my number my Numero Uno was winning he had a one he has a 122 WRC Plus in his postseason creating at a 115 last year with a 348 OBP and some some pretty big plate appearances pretty big at bats Alex that’s the kind of player I want I want a good that’s a guy I want I want a guy who you know in 45 in his postseason career and I’m going to pull up uh his postseason career stats so among guys um with at least 100 plate appearances in their playoff career so you know decent sample size nothing like obviously 100 plate appearances isn’t a ton um we’re talking about you know one of the better OBP guys we’re talking about a guy who’s got you know good numbers in the playoffs they got a 12 120w WRC plus among second baseman and I’m going to put I hope he pops up as a second base on fan grabs he should unless he doesn’t yeah he’s one of uh 10 players at the position with at least a 359 OBP he’s seventh among second basem in uh playoff WRC plus uh he has a 16.2% strikeout rate in the postseason that’s pretty significant he doesn’t strike out not not the kind of guy who’s scared you want to say he’s scared of the big moment the numbers disagree with that right the numbers would suggest he’s thrived in the big his number numbers in the postseason are better than his numbers in the regular season he improves his performance in the playoffs so you know when I think about culture setting a culture do you know what setting a culture is it’s winning why do the Astros why does everyone talk about the culture like if Altuve went to the Yankees The Talk would be about culture right if kareo went to the Yankees The Talk would be about and we’ve talked about this culture bregman culture Tucker culture if Big Poppy goes to a team obviously he’s retired but if he was on a team when he was on the red so culture when Jeter played culture What’s the culture winning Tom Brady culture Eli Manning culture what do these guys do win winning is culture LeBron culture Kobe culture Shaq culture what’s culture it’s winning so when we talk about culture we talk about Clubhouse we talk about makeup we talk about personality what matters is winning I’m not comparing glaber Torres to Kobe Bryant of course what I am comparing glaber Torres to is saying he performs in the postseason and if you want to establish a culture in New York you have to win without a World Series it’s hard to make that argument if you win a World Series we’re the New York Yankees where recent World Series if theke won the 2024 World Series even if they don’t bring soda back do you know what their pitches to every free agent where the reigning world series CH Champions with the New York Yankees you’ll make money that you couldn’t even imagine making playing for the Yankees because of sponsorships you join Aaron judge the best hitter on the planet blah blah blah blah blah blah all that stuff right think of the pitches the Patriots have had for years you think it’s yeah you know Tom Brady’s like he makes cookies for everybody no it’s you know what Tom Brady does wins you think you think a free agent goes but but am I going to get coddled if I play poorly does does my second baseman make a lot of Errors I don’t want to play for a team that has a second base that makes errors no they go am I going to win here or am I going to make money here if I do both yeah that’s great that’s what I want to do win and make money that’s that’s the two goals the money might be number one but number two is probably winning number one is maybe GE geography plays a role in this but like money and winning right uh players would do anything to make more money and players would do anything to win a title that’s just fact right that’s matter of fact I’m sorry I just I push back on this notion that culture has anything to do with anything and and arado like you know you want to talk about culture right you know bring arado and changes what D we watch the Astros literally win for by cheating yeah about culture no one gives a crap about culture apparently and also like do you does anyone question Jose altu’s leadership skills cuz it happened no cuz he won another world you know what they did they won the World Series in22 so I’ll say this when it comes to baseball I don’t think culture as matters as much if you compare to a sport like football because football you are leaning on each other and baseball’s a very individual individualistic game like you are going up to bat alone you’re going into field the ball alone yeah you got to throw the ball to the first base you got you got to throw the ball to the cutof whatever but it’s that chemistry on field it doesn’t always matter you know what I mean it’s a lot of it’s individual catching a flyball you know you’re doing it by yourself football you have to be it’s all timing you know timing with your quarterback timing with your offensive line timing with your receivers it’s all one big element it’s one big machine baseball’s a lot of individualistic uh kind of performance so yeah like a a a bad locker room can destroy a team but it’s very rare that you see a bad locker room um the Yankees have the leadership man like Stanton’s a great locker room guy judge is a great locker room guy Cole’s a great locker room guy they have a flush full of young Talent who love to play baseball and want to be a good piece of they have no problems in the locker room let’s make that very clear bringing in you know somebody whoever it might be bringing back gabber Torres who’s been there for a decade almost it’s not going to it’s not going to ruin the locker room like let’s be honest let’s let’s be like that’s that’s a ridiculous narrative Ryan ridiculous so that’s not even on my on my peripherals what is on my peripherals is who the hell can play in the infield that’s going to make us a better team tomorrow right gor is playing Third Base maybe is better value than him playing second base at a very cheap price tag too so you the Yankees can say hey we think that you can make more money long-term playing Third Base we think we can eliminate a lot of your defensive issues playing third base and most importantly we can give you a one-year deal to reset your Market because right now your Market is not looking so good buddy not looking so good we can give you a chance to reboot reset and rearn and that’s what they should that’s what they should sell to glaber Torres you come back we’ll give you a one year deal where you can build your Market as a third baseman and not a second baseman right now good second baseman aren’t getting that much money man look bregman’s about to get 200 I know bre bregman’s a much better player I think gber Torres is but he’s also like three years older and he’s about to get 200 mil you know what I mean as a third baseman so you know if I was glaber I’d be like I’d be jumping at the bits trying to get uh a team to let me play third base for them to Matt Chapman Matt Chapman that oneye deal and he’s he has $150 million he can add to his bank account on top of the $25 million he took going for the Giants he turned that into a basically a 7-year $175 million deal granted that relies on glab tourist playing well and I understand that that’s you know something that’s important here but if he gets the market as a 28-year-old coming off of a strong year and he has two strong years sandwiched in between one solid year yeah you know like that’s going to work and you know I know Yankee fans are going to say in the comment section below look I don’t really want clayer and that’s fine right I don’t think the takeaway from this is that you should want claber but almost that like there’s another option the market I’m going to before I go to Aron and I think the way this ties back to arado is that you really are taking quite a risk I know people go there’s no risk in a $12 million player If he if they cut the salary to that no there is there’s a player you don’t get because you got arado to play that position it’s like when people go gold Schmid’s a no-risk player I disagree there is risk because you didn’t add a different first baseman you didn’t you know go all in on someone else maybe uh granted again the way I talked about reading the market the Yankees I think did great job of reading the market in that sense I don’t think the Yankees jumped on gold Schmid because they were desperate I think they did because they evaluated all the other options and as these moves because remember when moves get finalized it’s not like out of nowhere the Dbacks called up the Guardians were like hey it’s our first time talking you want Josh Naylor can I have Slade Sone and a comp pick cool done that’s how that works right these are talks ongoing negotiations posturing field offer for some teams evaluate your offers come back Circle two all that stuff get additional information look at other options of the market you think Dbacks were only looking at Josh Naylor no I’m sure they were in the low Market I’m sure they’re in the market for other first basemen seeing if they could bring Christian Walker back they were in on Paul Goldman who of course got his career started there and is one of the more legendary players in that franchise’s history um so you know the Yankees took their time with Goldman I think they took their time with the first Bas Market it moved very fast the Yankees were able to it’s kind of like a m it’s free agency is a game of musical chairs you don’t want to be the one left without a chair the Yankees have played musical chair in the bullpen in the rotation at first base and in the Outfield and they’ve walked away with one of the a major league caliber option at each position and in some cases with Max freed Devin Williams to some extent Cody Bellinger they got the best possible options they could one of the best possible options they could obviously Soto’s the best possible option in left field but or right field um you could argue Freed’s the best starter in for agency you could make that argument that he’s better than Burns You could argue Williams is going to be the best reliever moved I I would make that argument he’s the best reliever that’ll get change that will change teams this winter Bellinger’s probably what the the third best left-handed outfielder or how many outfielders are better than him on the market Hernandez right like that’s basic basically it but like we were talking about the fit for left field Hernandez can’t play Left Field at the Yankee Stadium so you know Bellinger is one of the better outfielders in the market the Yankees use one of the assets they have money to go out and basically secure him and and give the Cubs what they wanted while not giving up anyone of note uh the other that’s important is that the Yankees have all their trade chips so Alex if people become available the Yankees are could be at the front of the line of a lot of these deals they didn’t give up any draft picks to sign gold Schmid they didn’t trade anyone to sign gold Schmid they gave up Cody potit for Cody Bellinger no disrespect to Cody potit who I like but he’s not a he’s not a prospect he’s 30 and he has injury issues um the only player in which they gave up significant like draft capital is Max freed for and that’s a second and fifth round pick and that didn’t go to anyone it just disappears from the Yankees so um you know in trades that has no effect either you can’t trade picks in baseball so you can trade comp picks but not second round picks so um yeah I mean I I think if the Yankees someone comes available the Yankees have chips on the table and if no one becomes available they have glaber right there and if glaber’s gone yeah I guess we go to arado but there are so many fail safes built into this offseason plan with second base that like going to arado on December 23rd would be crazy I think that’s where I’m at right like it feels like you have too many fail safes built in to go oh this Market’s moving fast they got to hurry up like does bregman seem close signing anywhere nope pass on Kim nope the the Dodger going to trade Gavin Lux tomorrow nope right like that’s not happening none of those things are happening so Yankees have time Yankees have time to evaluate and I hope they take their time if the market doesn’t move fast I don’t I don’t want to rush anything if they go a month without making a move Alex I don’t care as long as the market doesn’t move where like if task Hernandez signs are you going to be like upset where was Hernandez going to play on this team you know like I’m not going to be back we’re clearly not in on him we’re clearly not in on Santan D we got to first got a left fielder yeah I’m like just hope the infield Market doesn’t move and hope Tim Hill comes back yeah I mean listen right now it seems the infield Market is slow but it always but at this point I’m I’m kind of thinking one piece is going to go and then the rest will fall you know the rest will start to come off one by one but now the Yankees have time I mean listen this is it’s the holidays I’m not expecting much to happen over the next week or so but after when the new year starts I’m expecting a little bit more you know a little bit more fire a little bit more smoke and obviously we’ll keep breaking down players in this capacity for you guys you get better understanding of you know where we sit where we feel the Yankees can pivot where they can look um it’s really just one piece left it’s just one infielder and just a matter of like wait and see who the best infielder you can get financially arado doesn’t make much sense unless they there’s a lot of salary moving uh out and in so going to be pretty interesting to see if they do go in that direction how creative they get with managing the salary don’t love the fit in Aon don’t don’t love the the money I think it will strap us down the road and I think there’s better ways to use it I think you save that money as much as possible to go get Kyle Tucker next year so we’ll see how things materialize we’ll keep you guys up to date as always make sure to like And subscribe if you’ve made it this far on the episode appreciate a festar review on Apple that would be really really awesome from you guys appreciate it um but enjoy the holidays I know tomorrow’s Christmas Eve should be a really nice time enjoy time with family and we’ll catch you guys on the next Fireside Yankees episode [Music] perfect [Music]
