welcome back Baseball fans the 197376 carry over League another look tonight at a card set box where we continue in the 1973 card set box to look at four potential four Keepers that each team has to evaluate um plus there’s also cards of players who have their 74 475 card presently in our league we’ve looked at the American League and uh we’re going to go to the National League East the national league north tonight uh just to recall this set would have been sorted into 640 players 32 teams 20 players per team uh the stratomatic inventory was not that large so we had handwritten in a additional cards um to get to 640 redistributed them all so that the expansion teams had a farm system if you want to call it that and so that’s how we started with 640 but six 1973 cards are on 32 teams in the carrier of League that’s 192 so basically you’re only looking at about 3 and uh 50 players here here once you take the nameless cards out plus you’ve got wavered players and guys in retirement list let’s begin tonight and I got a spreadsheet up so I know what the [Music] um I know what the uh keepers are we’ll begin with the Atlanta Braves they’re keeping Rico Dusty Baker Rico cardi Johnny oats and Ron Schuler Dusty Baker still a two in Center still great defense great arm great card now he 321 last year but you know that’s still a fantastic card to have so that might this might just be the card the Braves select Rico cardi um he got injured in 70 uh one came back in 72 and 73 he’s not so much here he’s with Oakland he has better years believe it or not in the future with Cleveland and Oakland so I don’t think they’ll take this card John Oats it’s almost like well no he’s actually was going to say the power versus lefties is there but he actually hits better over there which is what you would expect 248 reasonable left-handed hitting catcher and Ron Schuler he was the Swingman last year oh that’s a lot of home runs to allow starter seven decent pitcher not quite on the rotation 387 ER what you might expect just kind of like a number four starter or Swingman nothing special there but certainly at least good enough to get into the league I’m going to skip looking at the uh traditional players I’ve been doing that the last few it doesn’t make a lot of sense CU we know that all these car guys have better cards in a future year and very seldom do I do it retro go back into the past so we’re just keep focus and speed these videos up a little bit by focusing on the four Keepers we’ll move into the rest rookies and so forth in future season sets all right next up is Florida always interesting to see see an expansion team what they might have they made a move to get Louis epu from the white socks as he’s getting older Manny Moda they got V Pinson from Cleveland and Ellie Rodriguez so that’s actually some nice players but they’re kind of getting old give me all those guys 10 years ago and I think you got something special but so here’s apparicio he’s a three at short and the white socks have Bucky Dent waiting in the wings and he’s a Red Sox now but he’s got a 271 average this team will clearly take a three at Short Stop they’re not going to be choosy you know that’s a great apparo card this card will certainly be Tak taken Manny Moda this could be taken as well he’s sitting over 300 anytime he’s over that yeah it’s worth taking then you got V Pinson still a three in center field a minus one arm that’s a fine year 260 so you got three guys to consider now only two players can be taken from any individual year so one of those three you just saw will have to be taken in a future year of 74 75 or 76 along with Ellie Rodriguez this is a nice card for him always drew a lot of walks and um you know that’s a reasonable number of walks he actually has better years in the future all right next up the [Music] Mets the Mets will have on um it’ll be Matt laac McGraw Milner and St all right so Matt laak’s great story at 72 rookie card had four years and was magnificent in it practically outpitched Tom Siver over that timeline in our carrier League meaning that he was luckier than Tom and I had some was a big reason why that one the when the 6972 World Series on 73 he’s still fine erra is up a little bit to over three finally but still a decent card for mat laac one to be considered Tom mcra now finally that sub2 erra is over he had that 170 earn run average in 71 and 72 I believe and now 386 119 Innings it’s a lot of work out of the pen well want him to get the righties out and he does what we got 24% over there yeah we yeah that’s about right too yeah and he’s walking lefties as well not giving up hits though is he looking that the hits allowed that’s not too [Music] bad cuz he was giving up a lot of hits to lefties at the 72 card so that this is actually pretty reasonable to a card that had a 170 ra John Miler lot of power on base with the walks uh a little slight step down yeah 239 yeah 23 home runs but he’s down to just 12 doubles down with 239 average I think he’s got a couple good years coming up in the future might want to postpone till end and here’s stall but three with a minus four arm I don’t know what his best year in New York is is it this one 2 79 with 15 homers 74 walks with a broken arm or yeah fascinating story there yeah this could to be the stall card we take yeah nothing really stands out to distinguish who they should select of if they’re going to just take two and you don’t have to take two by the way folks um you could take a free agent from 73 it’s just that the maximum is two and we’ll do the Phillies then we’ll pause it’s going to be Steve Carlton Pat Dobson Terry Harmon Tony Taylor all right so here’s Lefty you win 27 games and then you win 13 very high erra lot of men on base he’s put 400 men on base here 29 homers allow there’s a lot to not like about this card you can almost say he was lucky to keep that ra below four so I have to probably utay on this card he’s got to be better in one of the future years Pat Dobson I don’t like him being a starter six but it’s a quality six Innings 424 ra it’s a lot of homers against lefties I guess oh there’s a triple double over there I don’t like that either yeah it’s not that special either Terry Harmon oh he’s got better ears than this that’s terrible and Tony Taylor the same crappy card well the Phillies have a dilemma here we know we want to keep these players but they’re going to have to probably come out of the years of 74 75 and 76 which means that in 73 the Phillies are going to have to look at the waiver List look at free agents and just generally low prioritize guys cuz uh first four picks in the draft the uh can be done in any order of the four years so your fourth round pick could come from 1973 be a free agent and then it is the eighth round for 1973 which is the least important player on the team so that’s it’s not a bad G if you don’t like your 73 guys it’s really not that big a deal and that’s a good case for Philadelphia if you don’t like 4 years out in the future when you’ve got an entirely open rookie class and you don’t like anybody there that is a big problem CU whoever you do sign has a four-year contract you’re stuck with that guy for four years or it cost you a draft pick to cut him before then so not a bad situation for Philadelphia all things said plus we saw some nice pictures in the waiver wire including Bob moose and Joe Coleman uh those two names off the top of my head sound better than Pat Dobson that we just looked at all right we’re going to pause for a moment and then we’ll pick up in the best division in the league the national league North stay tuned all right we’re going to continue the Chicago Cubs the team that almost won their division was a wild card won the Wild Card r round lost in the divisional round versus the Reds a team that also beat them in the regular season um Cardell Russell Santo and Williams are the four Cardell had a great 72 card and he’s got a really good 73 card leted the team in hitting in 73 what’s the speed still a be stealer great perfect perfect yeah i’ take that one Russia can pitch on three days rest now they traded bird hooton to make room in the rotation for Russell so it’s one of the four years that he pitches on three days rest the ER is three always had good control didn’t walk a lot of guys give hits to lefties like that Adin that’s a nice out so the walks are problematic but overall not a lot of homers and he’s good against radiy I like the card star seven could this be Ron Santos last good year one thing you’re going to lose is the versatility to play short and second and they use that versatility to get Glenn Becker and kessinger out of the lineup and put bill madlock at third base now you’re look you’re limited to Santo at third with Bill madlock as a designated hitter but you got to love this card right I think the two players can coexist you know 600 plate appearances for Santa we know uh madlock wins the batting title in 75 they can Co coexist for probably one more year and somebody’s going to have to go all right Billy Williams all right Hall of Famer finally starting to look mortal he’s a 288 hitter now with just 20 home runs down from hitting over 300 with 37 home runs but still a great player and of course the ability to hit left-handed pitching yeah if the decline due to age continues I have to assume he’ll be on a series of one-year contracts beginning with this one so I would say Cardel well this is a tough one cuz really you have to wonder about the longevity of of Santo and Williams if you can get a better Cardel and Russell C than these you might want to take those two for 73 and the better future cards for these younger players interesting dilemma the Cubs are going to have those are four quality cards right there and of course one other thing you can do is uh you can improve internally uh your 1973 carry on guys and move them into uh out of their 73 card to create space for additional 73 cards uh one player that comes to mind is they have 73 Doug Ral so if they moved out of that 73 card then you get three cards from 73 and you could take three of those four we just saw all right next up the Big Red Machine Runners Up This Time in the World Series beat the A’s two years ago they lost to the A’s this time around bench bbone Klay Carrol Gary Nolan one of those players will be missing so here’s Johnny Bench just 253 and 25 home runs still got the 83 walks got the minus three minus four arm yep you know as he has just an ordinary kind of year for Johnny Bench most players would love a year like this but for him is just a kind of an ordinary one what I do like is that uh the Homer here is a 12 against the righties I actually prefer whenever you see a right-hander crush lefties it’s always enticing but the sad part is you don’t face it that many lefties so I’d rather have him over there and he’s got the 12 he’s got the one and an out there bbone you’re righty who gets lefties out in air quot without giving up home runs actually he’s more symmetrical here as a relief three 216 ER 11 and four got away with putting met on base though 137 hits and 121 Innings but the one loss in ER are outstanding his offense helped him there Klay Carroll oh I don’t know about this I think he falls off a bit here yeah from 72 yeah 368 500 record 93 Innings but that’s not a goodl looking 368 is it I don’t I don’t like that at all over there and he doesn’t really demonstrate locking it down over on the right side either extremely ordinary and Gary Nolan does is injured so he doesn’t have a 73 card I’d probably go with just a bench barbone here not particularly exciting for the Reds but again the reds are much more exciting in 1975 and 76 all right the Pirates uh defending Champion World Champs got knocked out this past season Dave JY Richie heavner Al Oliver Manny sangi and oh boy those are important players and JY was the closer and he can do it again my goodness 9-2 230 60 99 Innings yep there’s your closer boom Rich hebner the one thing we can appreciate is hebner’s pretty consistent year in year out don’t like the defense being a four and he’s always known to hit lefties very well I don’t know what happened this particular year but you’re rewarded by a great performance on this on the right side 25 homers and a 271 average from a third baseman everybody in baseball would sign up for this and except for Richie hner who who would say hey I can do better I can do better than this Believe It or Not Al aliver here we go he’s going to have a couple 320 292 here he’s going to have a 320 year coming up in 76 I believe has 20 home runs they really still need him to play center field and some first base it’s not it’s not that much of a priority because again he can’t be in in two places at once but they have no center fielder and they have to wait till Moreno shows up mat Aloo used to be the center fielder he couldn’t field anymore so they got him got rid of him and startles at first actually as a lefty he doesn’t get hit lefties as well as he does um he normally hits lefties very well and he doesn’t that much there many S I believe hits 328 and 75 I do recall so as great as this card is everybody would take all of these cards yet the Pirates are going to be picky yes and justy the other three guys I’m going to keep shopping around definitely good enough to be in the league but we believe that all these Pirates will be better in a future year that’s some pretty pretty lofty expectations and they should won the World Series last year and the last team tonight the Cardinals this is the the team of misfortunate divisional alignment there’s a division in the America League I like to point to in the same region Cleveland Detroit the Expos the Ohio Players and frankly you put the Cardinals in that division they’d be awesome but they’re stuck in this blend ER of the best offenses in the National League pretty much and the Cardinals are like the little bird that gets kicked out of the nest they just don’t have a clear path to the playoffs and it’s going to be a long time before Rie Smith and Lonnie Smith show up in 82 so the Cardinals are going to be in the in the dark side of their uh franchise record Steve Barber John Curtis Bob Gibson Ted seore [Music] well Steve Barber is pretty reasonable actually wasn’t really associated with them they got him as a free agent was an angel and he is you know a left-handed and doesn’t suck which means he’s a candidate to get into the league if you’re good and left-handed he’s good and left-handed so he’ll probably get into league with this card same with John Curtis but we like this one I think oh yeah so now Curtis can pitch on three days rest actually did it with Boston Trade was made bobing Rick Wise regie Smith and some others in the trade we made so yeah this he can move up to the one or the two now if you’re wondering if he can move all the way up to the one the answer is to replace Bob Gibson presently the number one still starter eight but he doesn’t pitch on three days rest anymore 277 ER you know and look it wouldn’t be a big deal if John Curtis moved past Gibson you know as the guy pitches on three days rest while Gibson pitches on four days rest it’s not that big a deal even though I think Gibson’s still the better pitcher here between the two and lastly we have Ted seore just kind of a ordinary consistent second baseman decent range not much power good bat Handler good base reasonable base runner doesn’t make a lot of mistakes doesn’t make a lot of Errors 282 average but just 24 total extra base hit 68 walks that’s good decent card and actually when you think about this team I like all four of those cards so that creates flexibility focus on the future years and then when you have two guys left over just pick you know whichever two you need out of the 73 set because you’re not going to be disappointed with any two here in this group that’s good that’s good news for a cardinal team that needs every bonus available so we have gotten through three of the four divisions when we resume this series next week we’ll take a look at the uh Mountain Time Zone the National League West and then we’ll take a look a first look at all 64 players on the waivered list and a handful of um players on the retired list very small three guys really meaning that’s actually pretty good that there’s only three guys on the retired list meaning that uh the other guys don’t have don’t play baseball anymore but these three guys at least played then of course we also have hitters and pitchers that have not been in the carrier League yet and this is the last chance they have with their 1973 cards they would then have to of course wait till their 74 and future cards are available so that’s it tonight the 1973 card set box thanks for checking this out and we’ll see you next time w
