okay welcome to sel Sidelines you got Bruce the old man here uh we’re going to be uh breaking down the uh postgame Press Conference held by coach Mike noral after the nolles defeat the Charleston Southern Buccaneers 41-7 and actually beat the Las Vegas spread uh which was 33 and2 points and NOS go ahead and uh uh surpass that spread for the first time this season and Come Away with the victory now moved to 2- n and uh the Buccaneers moved to one and 11 yeah you heard that right both teams came in with one win and I don’t think I’ve ever seen that in my history of being around Florida State football and that’s been since the mid 1960s and that includes when we went 0 and 11 in 1973 when I was sitting in the stands I mean it’s incredible that this game uh could be that way both teams coming in with one win but the simal take down the Buccaneers in a probably the best uh offensive performance that they’ve had all year round because they came in averaging I think just a little under 15 points a game so it was a Monumental win for the seminal but we’re going to go ahead and break down this this press press conference I’m going to I’m going to let Mike do the talking uh it lasts about 13 14 minutes and I will throw in my comments where I think they’re pertinent but Mike does still give a lot of word salad I say a lot of word salad that means you know he gives a lot of Coach speak a lot of coaching 101 typ filler material uh certainly around questions but let’s try to get through those weeds and and see if he tells us anything that we can really uh uh hang our hat on and really understand where this program is going to go because that’s really the most important thing you know last couple weeks um tough season you know in general um but I was really proud of them for how they how they approached this week and and the work that they poured in um you know just uh you from senior to freshman you know there was a lot of investment just going to to to go push to be better and um you know I mean obviously um you know it’s been it’s been one of those Seasons where you know we faced we faced plenty of adversity um but like I told him you know at the beginning of the week you we we do always have the choice of how we respond what we’re going to be willing to pour in what we’re going to be be willing to uh to invest in others now that’s one of Mike’s favorite uh words is response how does a team response to adversity now in this case this was a likely response this was not going to be a close game and the and the nlls covered to spread 33 and2 points and they did have their best game of the season obviously the the standard of of how we want to play and what we want it to look like and uh you know you know ultimately with with every player I just want them to be able to come out and and you’ll be their best in the moment and I was definitely pleased for the response that we saw even throughout the course of the game uh some good some bad some uh you know things that showed up U but I thought our guys were uh were were encouraging to each other they picked each other up and then you know guys whether as a good player or a bad player I thought they maintained Focus to and and you’ll make the most out of the next one and it was good we were able to play a lot of different lot of different guys uh I thought we got some some good experience for them and uh you know obviously you know leads us into uh you know this uh this last week and it’s a huge week for us I mean immediately started talking about uh about it in the U in the locker room and I mean this week means so much for our program um you know it means so much for for our team and each individual that’s in there um and we want to make sure that we uh we continue to to push forward to go be the absolute best we can be uh and and you know go put a put a stamp on the end of this season uh with a you know finishing up uh with a great great performance here in a week from now but Mike’s exactly right on okay he’s already flipped the script and that is moving from this win which they expected to get uh and moving on to the University of Florida Gator coming up this week this is a critical game I mean it’s a game that if Mike wins this game he’s going to take a lot of sting out of the her of the fan base he’s going to take a lot of Sting away from the suffering and the anguish that Florida State fans have gone through there’s two games that mean a lot to this program and the one and lost record has always been immaterial to both teams in these conflicts that’s when you’re playing Miami and when you’re playing the Florida Gators okay I don’t know which one I hate most but I hate them both so winning these two games or winning one of these games is almost Paramount if you lose both games it’s really a bad season no matter what your record is so Mike can help this fan base and the nolles can help this fan base if they could take down the Gators worst case scenario they need to keep this game close they need to keep this game compe itive because they’re facing now not a Charleston Southern they’re facing a D1 FBS SEC team that has caught fire they’re bow eligible they have six wins they have a legitimate college quarterback and their defense is now playing very aggressive ball and they’re gaining confidence so that is going to be a problem for the simal coming into this game this week um you know for our guys uh you definitely proud of them and I thought it was a a good response you know hear uh you from all the experiences we’ve had over the last couple weeks what went into this the decision to start Luke tonight and I guess what did you take away from from his performance you know I mean I thought I thought he’s uh you know done a good job um you know trying to you continue to work whether it’s through through through practice you know obviously you know out there in his his opportunities he’s got in the game um you know he’s done a you know obviously an emphasis of of trying to make sure that we’re protecting the ball make sure we’re we’re uh U you know creating the explosives um you know and then just the overall operation um you know it’s been you know nothing you know as you go through it you know it’s not really been clean for you know either guy that’s been playing quarterback you know for a um you know to the standard of what we’d like but um you know but I thought Luke has done a good okay okay this is how Mike answers most of his questions he could he could just simply say I started Luke because Luke has earned this now through practice and through the opportunities he’s had he’s not Head and Shoulders above Brock but he has earned this this uh this job to start this week and thus Luke does start this game he plays three and a half quarters uh and Brock doesn’t go into the game to Midway through the fourth quarter so uh Luke uh uh definitely got an opportunity even though it’s against an inferior opponent job in in uh you taking advantage of opportunities uh you had some good plays some bad plays but you know really love the the mindset that he’s brought uh and I thought he he showed a great response here today and you know had a couple misses you know you there early uh but uh you know really uh you got thought bounce back you know there right before uh the you know the end of the first half and then you know obviously starting off the second half with a bang with a with a great throw you down the field of jakai and then you kind of saw him just you know U really relax and kind of you fall into the the comfort of getting out there and playing and um you know it’s a it’s a uh you know every experience is a big experience for Luke for Brock mean both those guys being as young as they are and so uh I thought it was a you know a good job by him and I was really proud of Brock when he came in on on on his drive and he let us down to to to score a touchdown as well okay let’s let’s talk for a minute here about what Mike’s trying to do uh Mike’s obviously concerned about this quarterback room for 25 his mind has kind of moved on now with the University of Florida Gator in front of him he can’t entirely move mentally on because this game is like the start of the 25 season okay he’s facing the University of Florida there will be no bowl game CU we’re not Bowl eligible and then he’s got to play the University of Alabama so he’s going to play two top uh well one top well two SEC teams okay Florida’s not at the top of the SEC and neither is Alabama because they just lost uh uh another football game so but these are going to be tough opponents he has to be concerned about his quarterback room he would like to keep Brock and and Luke on this team for the 25 roster the question is can he do that so he’s playing a chess game with these two quarterbacks and trying to get them motivated enough to stay on this team and to battle it out I don’t think he is going to have them as starters either one of them going into 25 my belief is he’s going to go get an O he’s going to bring in a new OC and that OC is with Mike norell is going to find a quarterback to bring in here to run whatever offense that’s going to be and that OC may even bring his own quarterback in but I don’t believe Brock or Luke will be the lead quarterback the starting quarterback for this team in 25 that’s just my opinion and because there’s just not enough experience for Mike to ride either one of those horses into battle uh but he does need a good solid backup okay needs that for for sure because you need to have two good quarterbacks what did you think about the the defense and obviously the third teamers give up the late score but overall what’ you think of the yeah you know I was pleased and you know I was play an offense that has the you know elements of the triple option like they do uh you know comes down to discipline you know Focus communication I thought our guys did a a really solid job of that there’s some plays that you know you’d like to have back and uh where maybe that wasn’t as good as it needed to be um but you know to be able to go majority of the game you know keeping you keeping them out of the end zone and and not not allowing points I mean it was really a good you know you know um performance by those guys and I thought they uh I thought all three levels you showed moments where they a shout out to coach Randy Shannon for doing an admiral job of keeping the defense together basically shutting out Charleston Southern late touchdown against third teamers really a material what what is material is a lot of guys got to play in this football game both on the offensive side and on the defensive side a lot of young guys these games are evaluation games evaluation of talent for season 25 where they did really good things coach you mentioned throughout the year the team sometimes lacking confidence can a game like today give you guys some of that uh take the edge off going into a big game next week oh man I think youve got to take every experience and grow from it and um you know whether whether it’s you know a good result or sometimes even a challenging result I mean you know sometimes the you know the the challenging result I mean I think could still give confidence if you will respond to them and you mike always chooses his words very carefully he’s almost like a political candidate he he he’s not he’s not really telling you what totally is on his mind he’s very careful in picking words if you can show that man you know the the issues that have that have shown up man I I’m aware of them I understand how to correct it and I’m willing to go take that step I mean it’s the it’s a belief in what can what you can overcome and you know obviously it’s it’s good to get out there and to see guys operate to see guys move with a with a little bit different step uh you as we were starting to have success uh success um and you know so I think it it definitely is something that you can build upon uh some of the positive elements that we’ve been working in in practice seeing those showing up on the field and guys performing in the moment in height you won by five touchdowns but it was only three to nothing and it’s third and 11 and he hits jakai for a I guess a 12 yard gain in the middle of the field kind of stood in the pocket was that when maybe he kind of clicked a little bit or you thought he kind of clicked and made some plays yeah that was a big play and there’s no question I mean it’s you know you get in you his first start you know I there always going to be nerves always going to be things that you’re working through but I mean I thought that was that was a play for him that kind of sparked just to you take a deep breath go play the game trust your eyes trust your feet you know hold it in the pocket and uh you know there’s times that you’re going to have to you’re GNA have to move and you know you know ultimately that’s a that’s a part of now for these quarterbacks whether it was Jordan Travis Brock Glenn or Luke these quarterbacks have to move you need given this horrible offensive line and we know why Alex Atkins was released from the program they have the worst offensive line in the history of Florida State football and one of the worst in the country totally worst in the country at FBS level in my opinion these quarterbacks have to move when they don’t want to move so standing in the pocket is not always a good option uh you know so it’s it’s a good thing they do have running ability and they use it when they have to the downside of that is these guys are taking some shots and when you take some shots you can lose a quarterback very very quickly playing that position um but I thought that he really did you know did some good things working through the you his progressions with his eyes uh trust in his feet you know in his drops and but that was that was definitely a big spark for him and ultimately kind of got us rolling now Luke does look like a a physically he looks like a quarterback you know this guy is uh he’s what 6’2 63 maybe 6’4 uh a little bit over 200 lbs he looks like a guy who should be playing quarterback he looks like a guy when he’s running the ball he’s G gaining more confidence he can pick up those five or six yards if he had time to sit in the pocket and deliver the ball he delivers a good pass okay his problem is he hasn’t gained confidence about being a pocket passer and I don’t blame him because of the offensive line you talked about I guess was it was it the plan coming in to kind of not do the back and forth of quarterback but but give Luke Luke time and give kind of extended time to Luke and I guess what do you think the the success after the weeks where like you said there may not have been a ton of it can can do for him and his confidence going into one more game and then the offseason yeah no I mean I think it’s I think it’s big and it’s was good to see uh you see him kind of get in a rhythm and you know we were you coming into it uh still you know open to the possibility of what it would what you know if there was going how much you know the quarterback would uh go back and forth um you know but you know as we started getting rolling and you know kind of had of my mind I was going to try to get through uh you know three or four drives and uh you know just really see Luke as as he started off you know what that could uh what that would look like and you know as he as he got rolling and we put together touchdown drives um you know I thought it was U you know something just to kind of let him continue to build upon the confidence that he was showing and just you some of the things that uh um where you saw him you know the game was slowing down a little bit for him just just throughout and so yes it’s I think all those things will um you help him you know take a positive step you he going into this week and um and what you know like I said earlier I mean I really like the fact that um you know Brock came in and you even in that in his you know I think had one drive tonight but you know was able to go make some throws laid us down and uh you know finish in the end zone so it was it was good just being ready for for his opportunity because you know there’s there’s been the back and forth and uh you know I thought he capitalized on what what he had today okay it was a good question from the Press about what was the plan going into how to use your quarterbacks and Mike dodged the question pretty well he pretty well dodged the question of course there’s no followup from the Press uh but Mike basically says uh well we’re going to give Luke about four reps uh four different drives see how he did but once he got into the Rhythm he just decided to leave him in so you know I’m not sure what the plan was going in I think there was a plan to rotate them both he didn’t think that it would probably go that well but Luke ends up going three and a half quarters so at this point I would say uh uh it’s going to be very interesting to see what Mike norell does for a starting quarterback against the Florida Gators I am going to make an assumption that the depth charts will say Luke or Brock but Luke will start the football game I I I I I don’t have much doubt about that you’ve been getting the young skill players um action over the last five six weeks but it seems like today they were making tougher catches maybe blocking a little bit better are you seeing them make that step yeah I mean it’s you know they’re putting a lot of work and and that’s one thing I am I am pleased with is that I see I still see the continued investment for I mean regardless of uh you know the record the you know the the feelings I mean these especially those those young guys I mean they’re hungry to be differen makers for this program and you know they’re all at different places you know in their in their Journey um you know and and continuing to grow continuing to mature you know you know building a a confidence in uh what it is that they’re they’re being asked to do and how they’re being asked to do it but uh you know also just the the physical and mental um you know maturity that’s growing in them with each with each uh you know rep that they get and was really I think this is the better part of what happened in this game this is another player evaluation game this is to find out who can still play who wants to play who wants to stay on his team and who do the coaches and Mike norell want to be on this football team in 2 who can make contributions either as a starter or a backup okay a quality backup and the young talent that we saw out there I was impressed by okay some of the young receivers had a very good day all right uh the the running backs Cam Davis uh a sing a Singleton uh Sam Singleton uh these guys uh put it out there kaziah Holmes is not a young guy he’s going to be gone but the these guys showed up I don’t you know the word from the fandom has been and some FSU Talking Heads is that Mike norell has quit and a lot of these guys have quit I don’t believe that is true if you’re a competitor which I’m still a competitor at my age in competitive Athletics you don’t quit you have too much uh Pride uh that’s going to stop you from quitting no matter what your record is you always want to do your best you’re always striving to do your best so I believe these kids are still trying now have some of them hit their maximum ceiling as players that’s probably true that’s probably true but I don’t think there’s any quit pleased to see those see those guys be able to go out there and execute in the moment and um you know it was a it was big for us because you know like you mentioned there’s a couple of young tight ends had big big catches you know kaid Dany you I was so so happy to see because that was basically the same you know and he’s talking about the tight ends I think that Amari Williams this guy he’s got a good future as a tight end as a slot receiver I think he could could do either and he’s got great hands so he’s been very reliable and he looks like a guy that needs to get used more I’m a little disappointed in that we’re not using our tight ends more for our quarterbacks that we don’t have uh safety valves uh for our quarterbacks to dump the ball off uh you know quickly uh one thing that’s going to have to happen is Mike norell and the quarterbacks coach in the OC need to start training these quarterbacks to get rid of this football within 2 and 1/2 seconds the average in the NFL what you’re training these guys to go to is two and a half I think it’s 2.6 seconds to deliver the ball the average uh the average pass on those yardage wise is about 72 yards per pass on that type of release however you you for the offensive lines that we’ve had which are horrible and we don’t know what we’re going to have for an offensive line coming in a 25 we must get rid of this football same same play that I can’t remember maybe Clemson or what uh whatever game that was you know a few uh you know weeks back but to see that response on that throw on it was it was really big for him you know all the young young receivers I thought you know got in got some action uh you know Elijah you know we’re going to we’re going to red shirt him um you know you know here so he did not play today but uh um you know and won’t be you know won’t play next week but uh you know for all those guys who were able to get in there and get to work um you know I thought it was really positive coach 175 rushing yards for you guys six rushers over 10 or over 10 yards just with this season when it’s been you know so close to breaking out for you guys just to get that game under your belt with the rushing yards how big is it for them yeah I mean you even even in that you know you still there there’s still opportunities that we we left out there but you know to be able to yeah 175 yards against Charleston Southern an FCS opponent we can’t forget that because it we need 175 yards against the University of Florida let’s see how many yards we get there because we’ve come in not averaging very many yards on the ground if we don’t get the Russian game going against the Gators there’s going to be it could get ugly to have some of success for to see The Backs um you know I thought we had some really good track runs where guys were right where they needed to be and and uh able to uh you know to create enough space to to allow for the explosive um you I thought you know the quarterbacks did a good job uh being able to control the uh you know control the edge uh you know for the for the most part and um you know obviously the offensive line and tight ends you know they were they were battling I mean there’s still plenty of things that we got to got to get corrected even from today but you know I thought they were they were uh definitely you know fighting to to make that to where we can have the balance and to be able to uh you even help us a little bit with the play action game how do you when you’re playing an overmatch team how do you put in perspective the win with your players um I know you want them to enjoy it because it’s been two months really since a win but is it on to the next one do you let him jojoy it today like it’s okay this is a good question this is a good question about you know how do you balance this all out because they are a crap opponent this is a crap opponent you know and you don’t learn a lot by uh uh being beating up somebody that is not even close to where you are or where you should be so and now you got to make a transition to a much tougher opponent coming in a week later it’s it’s a kind of a unique thing to win a game like this and then have Florida the next week you want to celebrate the win yeah I mean it’s it’s you know you enjoy you enjoy the experience that that you just had um and then you know our focus goes to uh you know what’s ahead and you know it’s a it’s a huge game for us uh I absolutely want them to en enjoy to day and you know winning football games is hard and yes I mean um you there’s there’s still good and bad that came out of today’s contest where we’re going to have to have an opportunity to go get better uh but you you enjoy you you enjoy the the experience we came to to win a game today and we’re able to accomplish that and you will enjoy that but you know just like I said in that locker room everything between now and you know next Saturday seven after 7 o’clock I mean it’s it’s going to be putting us in the best position to achieve success or you know has a potential to to hold us back and uh you know I want I want everything from these players coaches everybody involved in the program to go fight for this next week and uh do everything in our power to finish this season the right way now also in that regard there’s going to be a lot of recruits at dop Campbell there’s going to be a lot of recruits at Bobby Bowen field watching this game and that’s why if Florida State cannot win the game they need to be very competitive and they need to keep this game close if they allow it to get ugly it is going to turn off even more recruits that we hope to keep in the 25 class coach you mentioned a little bit earlier but with so many moving Parts along the coaching staff just how did you feel that operation was today I I thought the staff did a good job um you know defensively I thought it was a um very coordinated approach I thought you know you Randy did a nice job we kind of moved and changed to some dynamics of of how we you where we were Randy was down on the field you we moved a couple coaches up in the Box um I thought they communicated well um you know it was uh uh everybody has to take on a little bit little bit bigger role and you know our coaching staff I’m grateful for the work that they’re pouring in and you know I’m just pleased to to see that uh you know be able to execute the way that they did uh let’s remember Randy Shannon is no newcomer to football Randy Shan’s been in football a long time he’s been a head coach uh he’s been a defensive coordinator uh so he uh you got Odell Hagens uh you know I don’t think that was a big deal all right and especially against this opponent you you’ll be in there for our players a Ashlin Barker in particular but other guys have had opportunities to not finish plays um for him to do that and then you also got the the fumble recovery on special teams too that’s something this team has really lacked all year yeah that was as big I mean you know for us we we have to have those explosive plays and uh you know it’s been it’s been something that we’ve been really good at here the last few years and obviously this year it’s been a challenge for us and you know Willie Suarez you know on on the uh on the punt you know I thought it was awesome just you seeing a freshman you know we worked the drills young wide receiver obviously got great speed and something I’m excited about you know for what his future can be uh but to get to see him out there on a um on a punt cover and to take a shot on the ball get the ball out and for us to be able to recover it that was huge uh for ash to be able to finish the interception get a big return um you know those are things cuz we’ve had we’ve had our moments we’ve had our opportunities but we just haven’t finished and it was uh good to see you know you your guys step up and be able to make that play um you know and obviously it was it was big for for you know today’s outcome and then obviously the overall expectation what we’re trying to do thank you guys we had to bring in our expert here to give us a breakdown of what a coach we don’t need that we don’t need that okay and that’s it that’s Mike norell uh post game on the Charleston Southern Victory uh yeah I mean it is what it is uh you know was probably one of the least interesting games for me uh I got more interested in watching the young players who uh many of them I expect to be on the roster in 25 uh the older players uh they’re going to be gone uh so we can wish them a farewell and they have one other opportunity uh the older players have one other opportunity guys like farmer uh uh Patrick pton everybody thinks he’s going to go to the NFL I don’t see it personally I don’t see him as having any type of domineering season he he’s really can’t seal the edge uh he’s not getting that many sacks okay he didn’t dominate the game in Charleston at Charleston Southern Marvin Jones you know he hasn’t had a great year so I I don’t these guys have a chance now against the Gators to make a statement the older guys have something to put on tape now if they expect to go to the league it’s going to be difficult but they have an opportunity the young guys get a chance to prove themselves for season 25 but that’s it that’s the press conference uh uh KB and I will be back uh later this week week and uh we will be uh going over to preview the Florida game Florida Gator game and talk more about Charleston Southern talk about any other news that are coming up so I want to thank you for joining me tonight and I hope that uh I hope that you enjoyed this session with the old man and breaking down the press conference with Mike norval all right y all take care out there and have a great work week coming up all right byebye
