the World Series champion Jose Moda now Jose Daniel Hudson said we’re all World Series champions so I’m going to claim this one but the difference between me and you is you are getting a World Series ring I am not I’m going to get one of those giveaways during the season but do you have the Angels one and is it going to get a brother here I mean let’s uh see what else you got big brother’s coming there’s no doubt here’s the 2002 Angels ring wow which obviously means that’s a flex yeah I got got the big a on the side I got the uh motor and everything there there you go but you know what doy congratulations to you and to Dodgers Nation because you know what it’s such a great feeling and an honor and a privilege and and how fun to be recognized and be United to had nothing to do with it but to call games but to say you’re tach world champion I mean that’s it takes a lot of work man in the world series that was draining I mean it was draining to watch to call it was a ton of fun but nonetheless you can see all that work that went into beginning an early February Dodgers P two first teams in Arizona the first two teams to play a regular season game over in Korea Dodgers last team standing in the Bronx of all places against the Yankees of all teams and certainly two iconic franchises get it done in the ders Prevail now to complete all the comments about 2020 and the 60 Game season all that stuff that I heard about well it’s here to stay and the guy that got it done was number 30 Dave Roberts absolutely and you put it that way Jose mod by way we got Dodgers play-by-play analyst sports net LA analyst Jose Moda joining the show yeah when you put it that way you can really get the sense of the accomplishment of it it was a wire-to-wire championship it’s not just the postseason everything you do during spring training that you do in Soul South Korea that you do during the regular season all the attrition and overcoming injuries from your perspective though you’ve been on a couple World Series teams at this point as far as being involved and World Series teams they’re special they’re different from your point of view your perspective what really stood out with the 2024 Dodgers outside of just having a roster that added sh Otani and T Oscar Hernandez as far as just the chemistry the makeup of this team what really stood out from you just being around these guys all season long just watching these guys with a blue collar attitude I mean you look at the payroll and you look at the Ferrari Lamborghini and Mercedes look and Rolls-Royce and Bentley but these guys went out there and pretty much were in the workshop taking care of their business early on took care of the business when guys were absent I mean Muki was not playing I mean pers was out sometimes so many guys were out and so many injuries to overcome but they never look Beyond just what they had under the hood and so we have enough cylinders to go out there and get it done I mean you know it’s great to think about it and Dave and I talked about this a lot there’s a long period of time with the Dodges were 500 team a 500 team and that’s a comparisons so people are going well there they go with a payroll and look who they are well who you are is not who you are in July and August it’s who you are at the very end and one thing that really stood out to me is the way they played in September baseball this is different and even when I was AAR with the angels I kept an eye on Trends and tendencies and and just ways in which by talking to myad and so many probably friends with the Dodgers how things were managed this was different I mean there was no five six seven 10 game Comfort to go how do I manage the guys who get him rested to get to the postseason this is urgency at the best Dave Roberts did his best managerial job he’s done to me in my opinion as a Dodger and obviously as a manager and it was different because from the execution and also the implementing of different variances to your offense it was quite noticeable that the way he managed mid-september on through the postseason was managing with his heart imagine what what the game provided for him and what the offense provided for him obviously in slugging in home runs in driving the baseball I’m Bas Dogers right at top right but it was a different feel and a flow in game to the offense to we to maximize what they could do but certainly uh Beyond so many things too Doug is the way the pctures are managed I mean I go back and look at just Walker Builder Okay in San Diego he goes out there and gives up a five six spot he stays in for five innings you think about just the repercussions from that and how that set up the rest of the bullpen for the rest of the playoffs and and the Royal series and you have a guy that you know the second end he could have got you know what here we go again it’s not my day and this and that he’s like no I’m I’m ticked off I’m going to below that poer right now and people are going to pay attention I’m staying in there because I believe this team can come back they met it close enough at one point but things like that just we cannot Overlook because it seems like everybody need something like that to get them to they wanted to be where they willing to be but then that bull at the end was absolutely Mighty yeah that’s what makes this such a special run because all Championship runs aren’t created equally but what makes this one so special is like you mentioned you had a dog mentality from not just the superstars but that elimination in game four it was the bullpen that comes through in a big spot and then game five you have Yamamoto he steps up and they get the two big home runs one from Kik and one from teoscar Hernandez previous postseasons it was what could go wrong did go wrong this one was what could go wrong did go right and what could go wrong went wrong for the other teams right it was the Yankees in the fifth inning it was the Padre’s not be able to score runs late in that series and it was just an incredible ride for this team but you mentioned Walker beer and that was the turning point I mean overcoming that disaster second inning get the six runs you had the bad play by Miguel roas you had Manny Machado go in the Baseline Freddy was planed injured everything just came off the rails there and he stays in that game and he doesn’t give up a run for the rest of the postseason I mean how impressed were you from that version of Walker beer and do you think that carries over into the next season and that you get that version or close to that version of Walker beer obviously going to get some runs but that’s the more Frontline starter version of Walker be that he’s going to be moving forward listen Doug I do have a a tendency I I like to separate guys from uh projections from expectations of regular season to a dog mentality when it comes down to the bigger game walker beer has always had that Walker bilder as much as sometimes he even doubted where he could come and how far he could come in 2024 he never doubted that there was something in there that was never going to leave and that’s what I think there great Ator between guys that you acquire for example Michael Copic you know he brought something to the bullpen that was needed I mean hey Jack FL needed to bring something as he did through that edge to the rotation but going back to beer in so many of the analysis obviously on on postgame on the show on 570 it was like what could go wrong for any pitcher right now in terms of play not being made a blooper somebody not covering a base and all those things it happened to wab into anybody else on that rotation and I’ll saying that staff but I always kept saying you cannot give up on a guy that shown you that when things matter the most he’s there forget about stuff forget that now in all that let’s remember that he was a little more flexible and making adjustments on what he pitched on the mound and something so important too is he minimized the usage of certain pitches early in games to find one or two because at 95 96 with his stuff movement and off speeding velocity he was able to neutralize some guys he finally found that out he didn’t need six pitches in the first inning to full guys he needed one or two or three max he found that out now another adjustment was which I always ask a lot of Major Leaguers why is it not done Mo pitching from the stretch with nobody on base I mean Doug the Japanese do it a lot of the asan pitchers do it and I have a chance to first time I asked somebody about this was to hoki in J Japan who was um show his former pitching coach and I said okay tell me about pitching from the stretch when so many people in the US are worried about the wind up and getting behind the basb velocity he goes Jose if the most important pitches they have to make in a game are from the stretch why not make him all important where there’s nobody on velocity is not going to be lost yeah yeah maybe you think because you don’t have to pushup but once you recognize and have your mechanics all lined up it doesn’t matter so to me the waber just a mentality of flexibility the toughness and then knowing that there are certain things they need to change and he did but one thing you knew though when he was in the clubhouse the way he acted the way he talked and then walking around that field you knew he was going to be back and he was Walker all the way back 100% I think for me it’s it’d be one thing if he was using the same mix and the metrics on his stuff was exactly the same in the regular the season as it was when he was having success in the postseason but the truth is like you mentioned the pitches were just more effective the four seen fastball usage went up because I think he got more confidence in it the whiff rate went from 177% the regular season to 29% in the postseason knuckle curve same thing big increase 27% whiff rate in the regular season 39% in the postseason I is a guy that’s figured something out as far as uh two Tommy John surgeries getting Health to getting that confidence back I feel like he’s a must resign and one one I want to specifically ask you about tar Hernandez because teoscar Hernandez really had the dream bet on yourself season for the Dodgers makes the All-Star team wins the first home run derby in Dodgers franchise history puts together an incredible season wins Silver Slugger and then he selts himself up for a nice Payday the Dodgers need an outfielder I feel like you look at what he brings to this offense the team chemistry the clutch hitting I think you have to find a way to bring this guy back and he is familiar with everything that happens in Dodgers baseball and that to me is a key element that might be worth another million2 two million dollars if I think about his agent right and now tusker is very um cognizant of something else too is he might be enticed by somebody out there with a say a four or fiveyear deal but he also understands the value that it has the fact that he won here he knows what’s expected here and the family likes it here too beyond that tasar is very ingrained and being a guy that’s stable and bring a lot of stabilization and and a a quiet mentality to the clubhous wuk Bez was telling me during the season Jose I never seen a guy that he could missplay a ball in the Outfield he can go 0 for eight he goes 0 for 12 at one stetch in the postseason but he always walks on the club I saying guys it’s about us it’s not about me and you just love guys like that because they’re not caught up in their paycheck or the their bank account or saying I fit here because you’ll make me fit let’s talk about fits now here Doug there’s certain guys that throughout baseball and through the years have not been good fiscal organizations or clubhouses and I always say that the Dodgers have done such a great job through the year especially Andrew Andrew Freeman to making sure to just not just add guys just because the numbers say so there’s a need in that position but is he the right fit in the culture will he adapt and what does he bring to everybody else and that’s something that tasar has and I talked to tasar couple days ago and there’s no doubt in my mind that yeah he’s entitled to all the that he’s enjoying right now the attention and uh the offers and the flirting by other teams but I know that he wants to come back and hopefully uh we’ll see it work out yeah and I think a lot of guys say the right things like I’m happy here I want to be happy and at the end of the day the money is the biggest Factor I’m not asking for him to take 5060 million less but it does feel like he’s one of those rare players that is going to Value happiness and fit and how comfortable he is in this organ gation and it’s going to be a major factor he’s not going to be someone who going to go to the highest bidder so I love hearing you say that now Kik Hernandez is another guy that I mean he turns into an elite MVP player in the postseason big hit after big hit the team chemistry is off the charts with him in this group and I think he’s someone where he saw what it was like to play with the Boston Red Sox get an opportunity to have an everyday role he knows that he’s fitting perfectly in with his organization with this role I also think he’s a must resign to be that guy saying let’s run it back with everyone but those are my three guys ber teoscar and Kik I need to see back in dodger blue a lot of Blake trying to be honest yeah yeah I mean k add try into that too I mean k is a guy that um he sometimes hard to figure out um even other managers are like which version am I going to see today in the regular season but there’s one thing you know is in the in the postseason you know which version you’re going to see because K becomes an everyday player because he forces you by the way he plays by the way he prepares by the way he says many many times I visualize being the big spots and he’s not scared of it I mean uh there there’s very few players in baseball today even with big salaries and big contracts that have more to prove in October than Kik Hernandez does and Kik is a guy that enjoys it he Treasures it I mean the fans are so intrigued and and and absorbed with him because he plays the game the right way now in the regular season he could be a different version I think there’s some things that mechanically he needed to adjust through where his body was in certain aspect with the hips but ke is a very smart player versatile on defensively he does not have to Envy anybody in any position that he plays and think about when when Freddy Freeman was out and the way the keik played first base it was aable there’s no excuse about I need extra work no just hit the ball to me I know what I need to do with the because he pays attention to what guys are doing when he’s not playing so Kik to me is also a must he’s uh he also got a taste of what it was like to not have a job came spring training last year so all those things play into your mind you expect the market to change but I think a lot of players have said that through the years and things go to the worst sometimes but there’s not a whole lot of activity right now which is an indication that um teams are waiting players are waiting because when it falls man it’s going to be a lot of fun there going to be even more freance available now when uh non- tendons come around that’s a really good point because players going to be lining up to play for this organization because they’ve seen what it did for JD Martinez what it did for TAS Hernandez Kik Hernandez giving these guys opportunities to go elsewhere chase the money if they want to or also get paid and pursue championships with the Dodgers now I consider you Jose pretty much the world leader the world expert on all things show he Otani you covered him in Japan with the angels now with the Dodgers in the postseason he had his moments I mean I still believe that the Dodgers don’t win the World Series potentially if he doesn’t hit that three-run home run of Dylan se’s with how hot the Padre were it could have been a sweep so a lot of things are there where he had his handprints all over but didn’t have his best postseason of course he suffered the injury in game two with the laam and he was one for 11 after that but what do you make of shi otani’s first postseason experience I would say that um sh knows what’s a stake now the expectations the fact that you know this guy’s got a Target on him he knows that he could have done more but now it’s not a matter of thinking about averages or Max MSY didn’t get a hit in the World Series true and they won so my point is this and I’m glad you brought back the uh Dylan SE home run because I think you cannot deny that every person associated with the Dodgers when they’re facing the pad down three nothing they’re going oh my God no not again Padres October Division Series they got to get out of this right then comes one hit show Hill ‘s home run change everything when we spend the whole offseason last year talking about what where was mooki where was Freddy where was uh you know the rest of the offense well that one hit to me changed everything because from Muki to Freddy to Max MSY to Will Smith going oh guys let’s forget it’s not forget we have SH now one swing could make a difference and to me that was pretty much a turning P also on the confidence going forward for the team to say whatever happened last year forget about it we just out to a Dylan seas that was of the best pitchers in baseball who was clustered and frustrated on the way the D approached him but you know in otani’s home run is a byproduct of not just him it’s just the way the Dodgers face and approach Dylan CES in that game and later on too when he was just like what what what is going on here I mean the walks forcing teams to make plays as they did to the Padres they did to seino and the Mets that did to the Yankees but all those are byproduct from saying we need one string from somebody and always say that I’ll never forget this from aie gito and Cal Fon when he told us before the National Championship in 1984 he goes listen when you are associated with a winner nobody’s ever gonna ask you when you have a ring what you hit that year but you know what they know they play for a winner and that’s all that matters nobody’s gonna care about what Max Muny did or Shani did otasco or Gavin Lux or Will Smith but they know one thing these guys are part of a championship and I think for shy atani a Learning lesson in the fact that sometimes yeah the swing got a little bit too long we know he got hurt but also understanding the way that they pitch him it’s going to be important moving forward too 100% winners win I love that and I think too you mentioned Dylan CE I mean the game forward they staved off elimination show had a single early in that one to put him up two nothing he gets the double in game one that leads to the tie that sets up the Freddy Grand Slam later so I don’t buy into this whole narra that shi didn’t have a good postseason I think that his presence alone puts so much stress on pitches and I kind of like the fact that he has a postseason where hey he didn’t play his best cuz we know what he’s capable of that’s all-time greatness and he goes into the offseason saying okay next time I get a crack at this I want to win World Series MVP I want to win NLCS MVP but I also want to ask you about the pitching s cuz you saw firsthand how dominant he can be on the mound an ace level starting pitcher how do you want to see them handle him early on next season cuz he’s coming off the labram surgery push his throwing program back but what Fair expectations for him on the mound next season how do you want to see the Dodgers handle Shi uh to begin with now that he has his shoulder injury um obviously he’s going to be very careful the kids go left to begin with we know one thing that sh is not going to make 30 starts for you he’s never done it he’ll never do it and you have the space of having a very deep rotation regardless because there’s so many bodies coming back that he doesn’t have to be a guy that you say I got to push him to be at the top three in the rotation because obviously there’s a different schedule with SH and when Yama M so sh needs to be the guy that needs to be guarding himself against in other words sh needs to be guarding himself against sh because he’s going to come in and say I’m ready I want to pitch I want to do both things and then overall because you know he he’s not 26 years old anymore and he wants to play a lot right he want to be on the field the Dodgers are gonna have to make a decision at some point okay you on the rotation starting you know May 1st or whatever okay but there are some days when we will decide that you’re going to be off meaning the day that you pitch or the day before the day after I would never go back to what the Angels did as first year where it was no playing no hitting the day before the day of and the day after that’s way too many have bats lost from Premier you know Slugger and then sh was the one that said and Joe Madden said hey how much you want to play pman ask and ask how much you want to play I want to play every day now they also found out that he’ll push himself sometimes a little bit too much and they need to guard against that so you want to full showon because you know other thing dou that I learned as as I join the doers is they don’t manage and they don’t just project player for six months they always project for seven months and for show yamam Mon and especially those guys it’s a matter of I need to take you out in the month of May at 85 pitches and fans are going to get all over me they may not understand why there’s some other issues going on behind the scenes that I’m not able to tilt the press or Express publicly but at 85 and five give me the baseball because I need you at the end of September and into October so there’s a lot in the equation that goes through this there’s a lot at stake but for Shani is going to be a matter of when do you find that one day when he needs to sit no matter what because obviously he is not going to be be Iron Man for the next nine years and that’s something that they’re gonna have to contend with but obviously a six-man rotations uh is in play yeah that brings me to that six-man rotation you have to have the depth for it I love that you point that out that the Dodgers are perennial World Series contenders they’re playn for October you have to consider that we saw it happen this time around you had three starters and you found a way to win the World Series they clearly don’t want to have to go through that again what is your viewpoint on the Dodgers going to a six-man rotation in 2025 it’s way more acceptable now that it was five years ago and you see more teams going through the same thing and you know even though teams generally baseball don’t like to talk about it or admit it go back and look how many how many teams use only five stared injuries obviously get in the way you not able to do that but there’s so many more ways in which you can maneuver with the opes and with the I and just saying hey I need more than five guys going through three or four times because the game Demands a whole lot more now and and it’s m differently I’m not saying that guys are not pitching as much anymore let’s be honest nobody’s making 33 34 starts on a consistent basis the guys make 30 or like applaud him 180 Innings is a new 220 so in that regards six-man rotation is acceptable guys understand why it’s being done with all the advances uh medically and and clinically and body composition and bio mechanics and all that even though they’re better athletes and better suited in the weights and in nutrition system but these bodies are not taking they can’t take 250 Innings anymore they can’t take 120 pitches anymore so it’s what we have the game has evolved let’s live with it and not try to live in 1980 or 1975 because six rotations are beneficial especially for a team that needs to first of all get a lot of looks on guys Implement you knowl Knack here in their ran pepio in years past and know that a river Ryan you know and guys like that need to be given a chance sometimes when one guy pulls out you’re not saying well where do I squeeze them now you have six guys to work with one goes out you insert the young guy and the Val through the years I’ve done a very solid and consistent job incorporating young pitching and for that I think a six mon rotation gives you way more options yeah and you point out the depth is there especially if you add a couple of guys now couple more questions I have for you excited to ask about this one because you’ve seen Roki Sasaki pitch you’ve known about him probably longer than anyone and he’s someone that is the talk of the off season now there’s a lot of rumors maybe a handshake deal with the Dodgers his agent turns that down when is he going to be posted there’s always been so much circling about Roki Sasaki but first and foremost as a pitcher how special is this guy and what do you think his ceing is at the big league level he’s quite special but I I’ll point out right away he is not as polished as shoh was or as Yamamoto was and one thing with him is because the recent injuries at a very young age you have to be very careful on how you treat him now could he be a dominant number one guy in the big leas absolutely is he there now no but man when I saw this kid pitch and I saw his bullpens and I have people close to him that report to me as to how he’s doing the ceiling is quite high it’s infinite because explosive fastball lanky body a lot of deception look at this arm swing arm slot movement and stride and you’ll go you’ll see a lot of things before you see the baseball on top of that velocity he’s got some rise he got some movement laterally and then the splitter is different than other splitter because it’s like one of those bottoms that drops off I mean it’s not a splitter that Glides in it just disappears and and drops off big they call it heavy bottom splitter because the way he executes and the way his arms pronate the baseball and certainly because of the looseness of his body he’s one of those guys that it’s like you know like double jointed kind of thing where he is able to just maneuver the basball so many ways and SE his body in so many ways and maybe that’s why he’s had some of these early injuries but you get him to a system in the US regardless where he’s from and he’s only going to get better because with the system here now that the longer season he’s going to be adapting to the care and the projections and all those things that go along this gu pretty special man but uh also ability to pitch inside I saw pitch inside I love the ability to do that not hating guys are setting up everything else in the in the outer half of the corner out against right or lefties to make him feel himself more efficient and he wants a baseball here’s one thing too Doug the time that I’ve seen him and some of the PS I’ve gotten is he wants to be a guy that’s standing there in the seventh finish and not looking at the bull after four and the third or five innings and go I think I’ve had enough and I think we’ve seen that with SH you will see that with SH you see you see that with Yamamoto more and more and uh with Loki is they call him in Japan Loki Sasaki should be one guy that um hopefully lands as a dodger but I know for sure wherever he lands is going to be a bright future because the kid does bring it and he’s been pushing for this for a couple of seasons one of the very few young Japanese players besides sh that has really said and kind of battle with his team to say I want to be posted early I want to be a free agent and remember that he is not one of those guys that you get into a bitty war in high amount of money he becomes an international free agent just the way they sh was that’s what stands out to me the fact that he wants this at this age that he’s saying look I don’t want to wait to get a$ 300 plus million doll payday in a couple years I want to go to the show now and compete with the best players in the world and that really feels special to me and it to me it’s does sh get involved does Yamoto get involved how do you say no to those guys how do you say no this Dodgers organization that is to me on the brink of a dynasty potentially and being the team of Japan so it’s going to be very fascinating I hope he doesn’t end up with the Padres but uh we’ll see what happens to Roki saki okay I want to get you out on this one Jose being in that Booth being at Dodgers Stadium calling Freddy Freeman’s walk-off Grand slam I mean just take me through that moment do you get chills up your spine how to react I mean is your jaw drop how do you think of something to say cuz you’re so speechless just seeing that moment what was that like to see the first walk-off Grand Slam in World Series history and to call it I could only go back in detail and I remember Blake trining gives up a run and I point out the fact that and at this one I’m doing play bypl in the 10th inning and I point out the fact that the Dodgers had not watch up to that point and I’m going back to my mentality of okay the Dogers had built on Mistakes by the opponent look how many walks scored against the mess of all the walks issued right almost half of them right I go they haven’t walked yet then I see the Gavin Lux will I go you know what this is good indication something good is gonna happen here because that’s pretty much the destiny this team has followed throughout the polities then comes a big pitching move they bring netor Nestor get T out let’s not forget about that because over here about why did they bring Neer and this and that and then Tim Hills numbers against Freddy were not very good right so Aaron Bo can’t win this one right well Tani is retired by Nester Fortune for the Dodger the balls up the other St out of hounds and well Runners do Advance opens up the base you can Freddy and just I’m telling you is I’m broadcasting the that inning that at bat I’m thinking I can recall Freddy telling me before the postseason we need to hit fast balls Jose and he openly talked about this like teams know that we missed a lot of fast BS last year in the postseason and I’m going I guarantee you whatever Jon is gonna make he’s not gonna be thinking about let me just push the ball the other way he’s going to look fast B wherever is and just go out there and rock something and boom there it was man I’ll never forget that call because Tri was like is this really happening and there’s no doubt it’s Joel Davis all that you think about Kur gift he immediately think it’s one of those moments it’s a game one and is this going to be a Setter for the rest of the series and a momentum Builder and confidence Builder and it was but man D thing about is he ran the bases everything that Freddy has gone through and me knowing that Freddy also has a bad rib that he’s been playing through and I’m going my goodness I mean talk about divine order and just a blessing for this guy for everything he got through and just the ath that he is and in very few words I call the Home Run and just let the crowd talk because that’s what VY taught me to just say let them do the talking because you said enough he did it with a bat you called it now let the crowd talking down exactly what happened yeah know it was Hollywood it was a movie I mean you mentioned all those things that led to it the Verdugo catch and foul territory where the runners Advance it opens up first base for the intentional walk to mooki puts Freddy at the plate and then all things that he went through the parallels with Kurt Gibson playing injured hitting it to the right field Pavilion and yeah I love the flex when he round of the bases ah to the bullpen just I watch it honestly like 25 times a day like I can never get used to that I mean never gets old for me but so awesome that you got to experience that and Jose we
