The Jeffrey Springs trade involves the Tampa Bay Rays sending left-handed pitcher Jeffrey Springs, along with fellow lefty Jacob Lopez, to the Oakland Athletics. In return, the Rays received right-handed pitchers Joe Boyle and Jacob Watters, first baseman Will Simpson, and a 2025 Competitive Balance Round A pick. Springs, who had a standout 2022 season with a 2.46 ERA over 135 1/3 innings, signed a four-year, $31 million contract extension with the Rays in 2023 but was sidelined by Tommy John surgery. His acquisition by the A’s adds a seasoned arm to their rotation, aligning with their strategy to increase payroll and avoid grievances with the MLB Players Association. For Tampa Bay, the trade helps manage their payroll while acquiring prospects with potential for future development π

so you’re telling me that just a few days after giving Louis saino an overpay of $70 million the A’s made another Splash in the starting pitching Department of acquiring Jeffree Springs one of the nastiest starting pitchers in baseball via a trade what is going on with the A’s well I’ll tell you what’s happening in today’s video they were this close to having a grievance filed against them by the mlbpa The Players Association essentially the PA was going to accuse the A’s of mishandling shared Revenue funds saying that hey we’re giving you a lot of money and you’re not investing it in onfield product and again they were this close but because of some things behind the scenes they’re probably not going to get in trouble anymore so let me try and paint a picture as to what the A’s have been up to recently and what their plan is going forward to avoid getting in trouble all over again so the trade is very simple Jeffree Springs he is going to the Oakland Athletics with another guy named Jacob Lopez and in return the rays are getting a flamethrower by the name of Joe Bole he reminds me a lot of Tyler glaz now they’re also picking up a lengthy infielder SLC Corner outfielder will Simpson and a guy Jacob Waters who’s going to be a complete project so before we talk about those guys let me briefly explain why the A’s are making these trades and moves so we know the A’s just joined the Warriors and the Raiders as professional sports teams to leave the city of Oakland now whether you want to blame the city itself the politicians John fiser it sucks to say but Oakland is just losing teams left and right in response the Oakland A’s fan base protested by not going to any of the games which actually kind of helped John fiser the owner of the a let me explain so the way that Revenue sharing Works in Major League Baseball is according to the 2022 CBA they actually changed it from 31% to 48% of your local Revenue money it all has to go in one pot and it’s divied up evenly between all 30 teams in baseball the poor teams who get a lot of money are called the payes the teams like the Dodgers and the Yankees who put more in than they get out of Revenue sharing they’re called the payers so let me repeat that one more time Rich teams like the dods and the Yankees put more in then they get back out whereas a team like the A’s they put less money in and get more money out because they’re not making as much and the way that Revenue sharing works it’s based off revenue from the last 3 years but it’s heavily weighted on the last year what happened with the a0s the last few years and especially 2024 no one went to the games so the revenue was almost none that’s where Luis srino and Jeffrey Springs come into play so according to the CBA you have to spend a certain amount of your shared revenue on payroll or there’s a little loophole of onfield product so according to the estimates I’ve seen across the game the A’s are getting roughly $70 million in shared Revenue according to the CBA you have to spend one and a half that in onfield performance upgrades and I wish it wasn’t worded like that because it should be going all towards payroll in my opinion but we’ll talk about it later a lot of teams skirt that by upgrading the stadium and building club houses at a minor league level and that’s on field performance upgrades but for the sake of today’s video with the additions of Luis srino and Jeffree Springs they’re hovering at about $90 million in money against the luxury tax threshold so $70 million in shared Revenue estimates they now have to spend $15 million total so the A’s they’re only spending money because they’re being forced to so $70 million and revenue sharing money they’re at 90 right now they need about $15 million left so the A’s are not done unless again they skirt the rulle by paying for renovations in Sacramento now let’s say that the mlbpa decided to actually go after the A’s and say Hey you have been misusing the money that has been shared to you from the other owners they’re not happy and our players aren’t happy either because you’re not spending money on them we’re going to file a grievance and the first example I can remember of this was back in 2009 2010 if you guys are young you probably missed out on the absolute mutant that was Josh Johnson he was a 6’7 monster who could throw 98 99 after eight or nine innings but the Marlins were accused of mishandling the shared Revenue system money so what did the Marlins do in response to avoid a grievance from the other owners in baseball because they weren’t spending any money their payroll was going down they gave Josh Johnson a big contract just to get everyone off their backs and pretty much the exact same thing is happening with the a a carbon copy situation of Josh Johnson just insert Luis srino and overpay just to get everyone off their backs I know I’ve probably jumped through a few rabbit holes but I’m trying my my best to get you guys to understand that the A’s sure they might come out publicly and say that we want to impress the new market of Sacramento we want to start spending money but behind the scenes they’re literally being forced to because they had so little in game revenue and local Revenue because the fans protested John fiser that they’re going to get more of the revenue sharing pot and the other owners are not going to be okay with them not spending that money so a grievance it was probably being made up before the sey signing and the Springs trade so again they’re basically Off The Hook by overpaying now that we got that out the way I feel like that was important to give context let’s talk about the trade itself Jeffrey Springs and Jacob Lopez they’re going to the A’s the rays are getting three separate Players let’s talk about the A’s players first the A’s picked up 32-year-old Jeffrey Springs who over his last 230 Innings has a 2.6 eray and by the way those 230 Innings have come over four seasons so he has an insanely high ceiling despite not throwing very hard but he also comes with a lot of baggage when it comes to health related issu ues again he doesn’t throw hard but he somehow generates a lot of whiffs and chases I’m not saying the a are going to win the AL West in 2025 but with that young lineup who showed a lot of promise just a season ago with Brent Rooker Lawrence Butler being absolute superstars in the second half when you add a Luis saino and a Jeffree Springs to your rotation I do think that these are good baseball moves and do I think that they’re trying to impress their new market and make a good impression on the rest of the league by saying hey guys see we’re doing the thing that we talked about we’re spending money and again I know the city of Oakland has some work to do on itself but it just it makes me so sad that they’re making good baseball moves right after the season ends and basically spitting in the faces of Oakland fans who supported the team for decades and I know recently it hasn’t been the case but it’s not all their fault a are also picking up Jacob Lopez I’ll talk about him very briefly he has been kind of lit up at the major league level but he’s a 27y old arm he’s got great extension and that’s basically in terms of what the A’s are getting the A’s are simply picking up Jeffree Springs $ 10.5 million to try and get close to that $15 million threshold that they need in order to avoid a grievance from the mlbpa now let’s quickly talk about what the rays are getting in return because they’re going to try and turn some of these guys into a Tyler glas now 2.0 and and specifically Joe Bole because he’s a 6’7 25-year-old flamethrower and again emphasis on flamethrower he throws a 101 to 102 as a starting pitcher but the Bugaboo about Joe Bole I don’t know if this sounds familiar he walks almost seven hitters per nine with a lot of strikeouts who does that sound like a tall flamethrower who walks a lot and strikes out a bunch it sounds like Tyler glas now and the Rays they were able to acquire glas now from the Pirates and chop his walks per nine almost in half he was hovering around six walks per nine innings with the Pirates when he left the Rays he was at a 2.8 so they fixed the command issues Joe Bole is a young flame-throwing monster with a lethal slider and a developing Cur curveball he gave up zero hits on the curveball last year he only threw it 36 times though the Rays also picked up will Simpson a lengthy 23-year-old infielder like a corner infielder corner outfielder type of build he has 44 doubles 24 home runs and a near 880 Ops and 162 Minor League games great pickup and then also Jacob Waters a 23-year-old former strikeout machine like we’re talking about back in college he’s completely forgotten how to do that at the pro level so the Rays they’re confident they can use their voodoo magic to fix his command and one more thing the Rays also got a competitive a pick those are only given to poor teams the Richer teams get competitive B picks which are later in the second third rounds competitive a picks are in the first round so that’s the Jeffree Springs trade in a nutshell the A’s are doing this to one impress their new market and two to avoid getting slapped on the wrist by their buddies before we end the video three small small moves we do have to talk about super quick the Cubs are getting Carson Kelly who was the best nine hitter in baseball last year he had a 137 Ops plus and 115 bats as a nine hitter he’s a sick Defender he’s going to be a good platoon guy with Miguel Amaya who fell off after a hot July and August Brian De La Cruz he got a split contract from the Braves which I’ve never heard of uh a split contract means that Brian’s going to get more money if he makes it to Major League Baseball less money if he plays in triaa or something like that he’s been an extra base machine and then that trade happened to Pittsburgh where he was one of the worst players in baseball and last but not least Emanuel Valdez he got traded to the Pirates and he has one of my favorite swings in baseball but he is a butcher on defense he’s got no speed he has a noodle arm but he impressed a little bit as a rookie before completely regressing in 2024 across the board the Pirates they’re just hoping that they can unlock the 35 double 28 home run 920 Ops guy two years ago in Triple A
