Speed boots frequently represent the pinnacle of a brands development and technology, so, you’d hope that we might get excellent take down models as a result of trickle down. Unfortunately that’s not always the case. But, this time around Puma have really stepped up their game with the Ultra takedown models and the Puma Ultra Match offers great value for money at just $80 with Excellent performance.

Thought out the video I’m using Teqnigrip grip socks and use code BOOTWIZARD to grab yourself a pair at AT LEAST 15% off.

Of course a good option is to get an older colourway on sale, but, if you want the most recent colourways, you can do a lot worse than the Ultra Match.

🕵️‍♂️ Transcript:

this is the Puma Ultra match which is the third tier takedown model from puma and they 80 and I’m like well now I’ve got to try them let’s have a look at the upper to start with and this is the entire reason that I picked up this boot it is so unbelievably soft like this is easily on par with how soft the the ultra ultimate is the very top end now they do feel quite different in terms of how thick the upper is but in terms of just pure softness this is very impressive and it’s not something that you get very often at this price point so these are not rubbery or sticky like you get on those upper tier models but you still get a good amount of texture from still this mesh based upper hold on should be able to hear that and that gives you an idea of the level of texture that’s across the boot and that is really nice in terms of the additional thickness most of that is in the 4 foot here because there’s a foam layer underneath the top of the the the top layer there’s a foam layer underneath it and there’s nothing wrong with that now it takes away from kind of that that Barefoot speed boot feel you might be looking for but if you’re just looking for something that’s comfortable maybe has a slightly more dampened touch on the ball which at this price point is a thing that a lot of people look for then these are really really nice and to top it off they’ve also got an internal strip that runs around the front of the boot here which is designed to give you a little bit more durability which is something I’m all for all the time now that kind of plush comfortable padded feeling actually only runs to about this section here and then you TR transition backwards because the padding is removed from there so it’s a seamless material but this area here is very much thin and Barefoot and it even has a variation of the cage that’s used on those other models on those more premium models and what this does is it does give you a very solid direct touch on the ball in the midfoot now admittedly that gives you two very different feelings which isn’t IDE deal but what it also does is it means that this area here becomes very responsive because when you push against it this pushes back it keeps your foot in place we’ll talk about lockdown in a minute but in terms of the upper being responsive I think it does a really great job again for a boot at this price point and the passing and receiving with this solid feel I also really like and I have no problems with this soft more padded feel through the toebox all in all the upper on this texture and all is very impressive for the 80 that you’re going to have to spend to get hold of it so we mentioned that the midfoot is fairly responsive partly thanks to this mimicked power tape but generally just due to the construction of the boot and looking at the rest of the boot for responsiveness we of course want to take a look at the Outsource which again for this price point you are usually expecting something that is very soft and doesn’t give you a lot of stability not the case here this is stable stiff and stable through the midfoot on the heel almost to exactly the same point as what you’re going to get from the top end model now this is a very different material it feels a lot heavier in hand and you can tell there’s a lot of weight in the sole plate when you’ve got them on feet but I would I would take the added weight all day every day if it meant I got something stiff and stable like this over something that’s about as structured as a chocolate Fire Guard in the middle of winter the the fire’s on you get you get where I’m going with that I’ll I’ll move on so on the whole I am delighted with the responsiveness but let’s have a talk about the traction how do the stud shape and St pattern hold up what kind of bite in the turf are you going to get well in this instance it’s actually reasonably similar to what you’re likely to get from the the ultimate version but with a few modifications so this is FG AG so we’ve got conical studs or more conical studs in a few of the positions but you still have some of these threep pointed studs which are pretty aggressive and you still have the three points in the heel now is this suitable for an AG pitch I don’t think so I think it’s overall a bit too aggressive and I think the studs are a little bit too long I wouldn’t recommend it it’s a good FG option uh but fgag even with those conical studs added I say too aggressive and I probably wouldn’t but in terms of just actual traction it’s really good impressively good in actual fact H you get enough rotational movement while also feeling like you’ve got enough aggressive straight line speed changing of direction is also really good now I have only used these on an AG pitch because I’m a crazy person uh but my experience on an AG pitch I imagine is very similar uh to what you’re going to get from an FG and if anything an FG pitch would be even better because of those longer studs the more purchase you can get in the ground this sole plate for 80 is really good uh you just have to accept that it is that l little bit heavier all right so what is my big problem with the ultra match it’s the heel and the heel seems to be my problem with every Puma boot at the moment uh in this instance you’ve actually got a reasonable amount of padding on the inside um it’s not overly slick at all and I think they’ve done a reasonably good job with that however it is only running around the area of the Achilles and it doesn’t do a Hu an amazing job of holding your foot in place but heel lock down is okay my main issue comes from the feeling that you get like I say the lockdown is okay but this is an internal heel counter that is very hard it runs all the way up here and it’s very stiff all the way around and that provides me with some pressure points while at the same time feeling too shallow so despite being very solid it just doesn’t feel right it feels like I’m only being held in around the bottom here and I don’t love that I don’t like that at all in actual fact now this is a different issue to what I have with some other Puma boots but I think the heel here you’re going to feel like it’s too shallow and it’s also quite hard and it gave me some pressure points so it’s the one thing that kind of you might have to get over if you want to go with the 80o Puma Ultra match which in all other areas so far is massively brilliant I mentioned the heel lock down there the lock down in the boot as a whole again is probably better than expected for a boot at 80 talking about lockdown and we’re talking about laces um the laces here are probably they feel look a bit cheap which is the opposite of the rest of the boot the rest of this boot has a really high quality look to it a high quality finish to it for a boot again of this price you usually these seams and everything look awful on take down Nike anadas boots and I think they’ve done a really good job of making this look like a premium boot aside from these kind of thick ugly laces all right let’s talk about the fit here now the fit on these is different to what you’re going to get from the ultimate the ultimate I went down half a size and I absolutely stand by that and I think that gives you the best fit I absolutely wouldn’t do that with the match I would stick with what you would normally Buy in Puma boots if you don’t know what that is it’s also what I would normally Buy in a Nike boot just for reference um I think that’s the way to go going down half a size is going to be just quite simply too tight Too Short absolutely would not recommend in terms of width there is a reasonable amount of width here like it’s not too bad so if you have a wider foot you can probably wear these no problems the opening is reasonably small so bear that in mind but you do get a nice fit around the ankle there’s no space um when I put that on kind of put my finger down which I think is really positive but if you have a wider foot these should be fine regular or narrow feet no problems at all I don’t think uh if you have a very wide foot I probably wouldn’t I just don’t think there’s going to be enough uh space in there and it does taper a reasonable amount just at the toe here but there is plenty of volume overall without it being excessive I don’t think again for a boot of this particular price point the shape of the boot is actually excellent with the exception of that one heel issue I have I just think they’ve done a really they seem to have put time and effort into this boot and I am genuinely really impressed for comfort in general I have no problems apart from that heel and I’ve not had any stud pressure to wearing these on an AG pitch so I’m pretty pleased with that in general and then in terms of durability I don’t really want to comment I’ll usually give some kind of advice at the moment uh but these have literally had one session on an AG pitch and I feel like that would just be unfair uh to comment on the durability at this point but I wanted to get the review out I wanted to let you know what I thought of this boot because I genuinely think it’s something that people are on a budget should be considering so the main competition for for this boot is going to be the F50 league and the Nike Vapor 16 Academy Superfly 10 Academy they’re both in testing so get subscribed to pick up those videos and if you want to see what it’s like against the ultimate then click this video right here
