right then boys and girls hello that is uh Dutch for hello my name is Adam cley and the next time you think you are good at your job please remember that Anna slot inherited this Liverpool side that was losing its way let’s not forget didn’t spend a single penny and just casually made them the best team in Europe and last night against Real Madrid of all teams they in looked [Music] it right then uh let’s get into it this was your Liverpool 11 last night and honestly I’m not just saying this cuz you’re probably a Liverpool fan this is my favorite team and system in the world right now and the reason for that is because aror slot has not overly complicated what is a very classic 433 system we spent the last two or three years watching midfielders come in here and fullbacks and ver over there and it’s trying to do loads of different things they trying to keep the ball for forever but that is not what this Liverpool team is the center forward is the focal point the two wide attackers provide the width the two number eight get up in support the six is a single pivot he sits in that space on his own the fullbacks push up to give you nice little passing angles and the two center backs are good on the ball and play with the goalkeeper to have this little buildup structure it’s not genius it’s not overly clever but it’s so devastatingly effective with these players but the reason I tell you this is not merely uh TI simp it’s because the Simplicity involved is also kind of its weakness and you saw at the start of this game Real Madrid targeting this very thing their plan from the jump was to disrupt this buildup shape that Liverpool Ed to control the games and they did that by having three players in this area here one each to press the center backs and try and stop the balls going out of the fullbacks and another want to stop any Central ball getting into Ryan gravenberch and yes we are now several months into his second season at Liverpool and my brain still will not commit between Berg Birch and Burke and every single time Liverpool got the ball at the back you saw this shape appearing and this strategy being deployed you can see that even when they lose him for a couple of seconds the first instinct turn the head where is he I need to get back in the line I need to stop the pass going in there and in terms of the buildup this gave us this right this is every single pass that he managed to make in his own half so during the buildup in that first half now for him this is quite unusual there’s virtually nothing progressing the ball into the center of the pitch he couldn’t really get any carries off I think he got one successful uh turn and run virtually everything is straight back to another player Madrid actually did really well at shutting this down in the first half and as strategies against Liverpool go this one’s actually pretty effective because what it forced them to do because they had a man Less in this area Andy Robertson was kind of tucking in as a third Center back then either Jones or mallister would drop into this area here to sort of give them a far more cautious and conservative 3v3 so when the ball did eventually go out to these wide areas Central areas dropped off someone from Madrid would jump out Target them in the wide areas try and win it back there and of course if you can successfully do that that leaves Salah and Diaz really really badly isolated and every time Liverpool did manage to beat this press and get the ball up to them they were pretty much on their own they were either facing with their back to goal or had to play it back into the center or got swamped by the defenders in this area it was effective but it was mostly effective because Liverpool were being by their standards quite cautious with it like if you remember Liverpool’s best chance in this half comes from a very rare uh Counterattack Madrid have possession they have good territory and they get all the width in this sort of like 4222 system from the two fullbacks so Mendy is up here Valverde makes this run into the opposite flank and they leave this huge gap in both wide areas coincidentally and you like this Liverpool fans this is man City’s uh whole problem at the minute they’re asking their fullbacks to do far too much in both ends of the pitch if you do turn the ball over and you can’t get at them you can run into these spaces and because they’re relying on absolutely enormous recovery runs from the two fullbacks asencio here can neither stick nor twist he can’t commit to Nunes he can’t drop onto Diaz and he’s really lucky not to concede an own goal and it’s this sequence of play here this transition as it’s known that Liverpool are desperately hoping to avoid being on the receiving end of which is why they’ve got this far more conservative like lopsided 33 in their own half as opposed to a 23 what slot desperately desperately didn’t want to happen was for Madrid to turn the ball over when Liverpool had good possession and then attack that space in behind Andy Robertson still a great player still a fantastic footballer but the legs are not what they used to be and against either G or Diaz he would almost certainly lose those One V ones a lot more than he won them but there’s a little moment in the first half which must have set off a light bulb in his head here all his nightmares are coming through at once they have turned the ball over and Liverpool have slightly overcommitted and Robertson is there to be attacked this space is here to be targeted that’ll Force Liverpool back that could create a chance and they don’t do that instead they try to build possession more pragmatically they do not go for the jugular they try to insert their do you don’t insert your dominance that’s weird you assert your dominance that’s what I meant and if I show you first order G’s heat map cuz he was the one who was effectively up against Robertson uh 1 V one take a nice look at that let it absorb let it wash over you and then Brahim Diaz because he was slightly more on the center back but could drop into that area you’ll see neither of them really targeted that space at all but why is that Adam are they stupid or something and I don’t know potentially but that’s not the point uh I’m going to make as we’ve already said Madrid wanted all their width to come from their two fullbacks it’s a huge way too big an ask but if you look at Val SE map I should probably move my mug you’ll see that he was the one getting into that space and while that is certainly one way to get into that space the downside to it is that he’s actually directly up against Diaz who can track him all the way back from that position it ceases to be Andy Robertson’s problem and already here we are the big payoff of this video Real Madrid should have been targeting this space and wed would you like to know how hos slot used that little fact to win this game of football and of course you that’s why you’re here it’s certainly not for my alleged sex appeal the answer is plain and simply and you can use this one in your own real life if there is a problem you are worrying about but it does not seem to be happening then just stop worrying about it your big Bal pal and mine AR a schlot basically gets in at halim decides they’re paying Real Madrid way too much respect gets Robertson to stop worrying about inverting so much he pushes up plays his own game that has the knock on effect of freeing up mallister and Jones to do their thing a bit more and now all of a sudden there’s way better passing angles through the middle of the pitch and Liverpool pushed Madrid all the way back and just to bear this out in the data this is Andy Robertson’s pass map from that first half you’ll see it’s primarily sort of in these areas and it’s mostly backwards it’s mostly safe and this is it in the second half it’s not wildly different I don’t expect your socks to have been blown off but just pay attention to how much more willing he is to be in this area and how much more of these are forward into these players who are not having to drop in uh and help them out but the real place you see this change and this is so subtle I love it so much is in that first goal so first off having this extra man in their half really did Force Madrid back you can see what a low sort of compact block they’re in they really are defending quite intensely now Curtis Jones who was just absolutely magnificent in this game I thought like technically he was just dribbling around like kaminga and Modric uh like it was the easiest thing in the world but anyway he’s got the ball now but he’s fronted up by two players he hasn’t got a lot of space he hasn’t got a lot of options and then for one of the first times in the game Andy Robertson gets on the overlap outside him and this does two things that are so small but just so good right first off Gula cannot check to see where Val is hasn’t got time to do that so that run makes him take a slight step back and a slight step wider he just opens up a little bit more space but then also cuz Valverde is behind him covering he then massively jumps out of the position he’s in in the back line to make sure Robinson cannot receive that ball on the overlap and the main knock on this has had the Brian Butterfield effect I believe it’s called is that because valver has jumped and left this Gap asencio now has so much to think about like previous to this he knew exactly where he was supposed to be and who he was keeping an eye on but now he’s got to be aware of the positions and the movement of all of these players and then from there Curtis Jones suddenly has the space he needs to go and do something so he comes inside he manages to find mallister who’s on the edge of the box and just as he gets the ball right look at this massive amount of space right that’s the space created by Robertson’s overlap and nothing is going to happen in that space that’s not where the goal comes from but it’s such an obvious place for Nunes to spin into and that’s what’s in asensio’s mind and when the ball goes out to Bradley this draws rud to get out of position to close him down and just all of a sudden now aseno has to worry about this space in front of him as well as this space behind him the guy is absolutely paralyzed with different things he has to worry about and that’s why I always try and drill into these videos how massive these tiny tiny margins are cuz he does get out to mallister he very nearly gets that block in but he’s a split second too late and getting there and the reason he doesn’t cover that space as soon as it opens is because of the space that created behind him because Liverpool had an extra man in the final third specifically Andy Robertson stopping worrying about inverting and sort of helping out defensively and getting on the overlap instead and that is something Anna slot did and I do appreciate this might sound like I’m making a mountain out of a moala but virtually every single time I watch Liverpool you see the hand of the manager in changes that get made in the game and there’s not many other managers right now you can say that about or certainly not in a positive sense the guy has not just done an incredible job with this Liverpool team since he came in on the training ground setting them up to give them the power to go and win all these games he does an incredible job every single time he’s on the touchline and there’s a lot of people scratching their heads right now about why are they so far clear in the Premier League why are they dominating Europe as well weren’t they supposed to struggle well the answer is the manager he’s doing an unbelievable job and you know what my dear dear dear dear friends I would be so happy just to leave the video there give h a slot his flowers like share and subscribe we all get on with our days but it would simply be a crime what am I in this job for if not to also talk about Connor Bradley now you’re an intelligent sort and can I just say handsome by the way if you had your haircut it looks nice you’ll no doubt have noticed that when I was talking about Madrid exploiting these areas either side of the center backs I just didn’t mention the most obvious one surely if you’re trying to do that in this game the most obvious one-on-one situation you want to create is alleged one of the best players in the world Killian mbappe versus the lad from northern Island who’s just filling in but such was the dominance of Connor Bradley in this matchup it’s not even worth mentioning in The Wider tactical conversation it was a complete non-event about half an hour into the game everything Anna slot was trying to avoid has happened Madrid are breaking on the transition they have got space in behind and mbappe has somehow been left with Alexis mallister this is everything Madrid should have been trying to do and everything Liverpool were trying to stop happening it is game over surely this is the first goal and Conor Bradley just strips him for pace and then splatters him with a sliding tackle with all the vim and vigor of a much older boy in a bad mood playing against his little brother’s friends this was Bradley’s heat map for the game it’s all the tackles he wor it’s all the interceptions he made it’s all the ball recoveries virtually everything by the way in this corner is 1 V one against mbappe is one of the most one-sided like wide attacker versus fullback displays I have seen in ages and it’s Connor Bradley versus kilan mbappe he defended absolutely brilliantly when he needed to he completely took advantage of the fact that mbappe wouldn’t go with him to give Liverpool another Outlet uh down that side he basically he got on that pitch last night and told Trent Alexander Arnold just go to Madrid then mate no one’s asked and all of that does actually play into a wider part again about why Liverpool have been so good CU slot has set them up in a way that allows them to build really confidently that gives them nice passing Lanes gives them nice passing angles gives them good options in the final third but as I said at the start the Simplicity of this system getting so many players in areas they’re comfortable being in means that even if the system isn’t quite clicking or the opposition have got a good approach to stopping you doing things you end up with loads of individual 1 V ons across the pitch and individually this Liverpool team is incredible like I don’t think we realize how good individually they actually are like a lot of the talk at the start of the season was about Salah and Van djk and would they be going into a physical Decline and Trent Alexander Arnold is one of the most unique players the Premier League’s ever seen but you forget that like everybody else is it a top top level like Jones looked amazing mallister I thought Nunes was really really good Diaz is one of the best Left sided players in the league canate is just enormous all of a sudden they get an injury to the goalkeeper and ker comes in and you’re like oh yeah he’s probably one of the best goalies going to and I’ll not get into it now we’ve done like two videos on him already but Ryan grenberg bur BKE has just become this all conquering just play The Middle on his own proper proper proper single pivot number six and slot’s done that to him he’s coached him up to that level and there’s just there’s not a weakness anywhere so yeah as Ric Flair used to say you want to be the man you got to beat the man and Liverpool have just beaten every major test they’ve come up against so far is only that Nottingham Forest blip that stains their record in any way shape or form so can we please put to bed that it’s still early days and they’ve not really played anybody P because it isn’t and they have and they’re brilliant although of course conversely while part of me does fear for Manchester city and what this team could potentially do to them anybody else think it would just be the most premier league thing in the world if they have a stinker and lose 1 nil cuz I kind of do but I mean yeah also kind of kind of don’t see if you’re doing predictions always play both sides that way you’ll never be wrong anyway you have enjoyed this and i’ really have for some reason please let us know what you make of the performance what you make of Liverpool what you make of Connor Bradley what you make in the kitchen why not all of that in the comments down below thoughts feeling verse song anything that’s in your heart I dearly love to hear about it you can get me on all the social medias and I mean all Adam cley C R Y I’m good fun
