the New England Patriots are 3 and 11 after a 30-7 loss to the Arizona Cardinals this was the Patriots fourth straight loss and their 11th loss in their last 13 games it may seem like an eternity ago but this team started 1 and0 with a road win over the Cincinnati Bengals then lost six straight then won two of their next three over the Jets and Bears and have now lost four in a row and I think this is one of the worst situations in the entire NFL and in today’s video we’re going to break down how the Patriots got here why I think is one of the worst situations in the NFL and what they can realistically do to get out of this situation the biggest thing to remember for the Patriots as we enter the 2025 off season is this is not going to be a one-year turnaround this team obviously wasn’t going to win six rings every 18 years for the rest of time but they made several mistakes during the final years under bellich and now they are paying the price and it’s going to take a couple of years to get this team back to going to the playoffs they have won playoff appearance in the past 5 years and there’s a reason for that and there is a lot to dive into in today’s video and without further Ado let’s begin and we are starting today’s video by discussing what one of the biggest problems with the 2024 Patriots is and it’s an overall lack of talent like every NFL roster the Patriots obviously have some great players on this team and I’m very pleased with their first two Selections in the 2023 draft in corner Christian Gonzalez and defensive lineman Keon white Keon is having a great second season as he has over 40 pressures and is one of the few bright spots on this team he is tied with di wise in leading the team in sacks with five and obviously sacks aren’t everything but leading the team with five sacks in the first 14 games is the start to showing how depleted this team is they can’t get after the quarterback consistently outside of Keon and when opposing offensive lines can focus in on one player it becomes a lot easier to game plan around schematically speaking opposing offensive lines aren’t heading into the week against New England stressing about how they’re going to stop a team with a pass rush like a health the Steelers unit and basically Wonder out loud how are we going to stop TJ watt Alex heith keu Benton and cam Hayward and even Nick herbig from our quarterback getting drilled On Any Given Play It’s really the opposite it’s more or less hey guys let’s stop number 99 because nobody else can consistently get after the quarterback and for reference three of Dietrich wise’s five sacks came against the Bears and Titans offensive lines whose offensive lines are pretty bad Caleb Williams has been sacked the most in the league by by far and it doesn’t happen by accident well Levis is also in the top five in the NFL and getting sacked and what’s even worse about that for Levis is he’s missed a couple of games so wise’s sacks were not exactly against the mid90s Cowboys offensive lines or the 2020 Eagles offensive lines if you understand what I’m saying the other two were against the 49ers and jets if you were wondering the Patriots can’t consistently generate pressure and they’ve also allowed 25 points or more seven times in 2024 and as you would probably expect they are 0 and seven in those games I know the obvious thing may be to say well we knew they were going to be bad in 2024 and that’s fine as long as we see some sort of promise from Drake May and we’ll get to Drake May in a minute but here’s where a lot of my concerns lie with the Patriots as to why I am extremely concerned about their future and why I think they are in a pretty bad situation the most worrisome part to me is that the Patriots unofficially knew that Gerard Mayo was going to be the team’s head coach in the post bich era for a couple of years years this was not a normal head coaching process where they fire a previous guy and conduct seven or eight interviews and narrow it down over the course of a week or two no this was pretty open that gerro was going to be the guy and we haven’t seen anything promising for New England in 2024 outside of a couple of players here and there this team only put up 20 points in a game five times this year and we knew it was going to be a long year offensively but they’re 23rd in points allowed defensively and what I think is one of the most concerning Parts about the 2024 Patriots is their 28th in turnovers forced they allow an average of 5.6 yards per play defensively and opposing quarterbacks have thrown for 22 touchdowns to just six interceptions against the Patriots in 2024 and you can see when you watch this team play that they are completely outmatched more often than not one key thing I want to highlight with the 2024 Patriots is what the expectations were heading into the season never in a million years would I have expected Drake May to come in and Lead this specific offense and and this specific Supporting Cast to 10 wins and have the week 18 home game against Buffalo be for the division or for a potential playoff spot but I was hoping maybe they’d win six games maybe seven and maybe we’d see a couple of good games here and there and really the lone good game we’ve seen from the defense to if you want to include the opener against Cincinnati was the Bears game and what was one of the lowest of lows for another NFL team I don’t think Gerard Mayo has what it takes to be an NFL coach and I think we see it every single Sunday not only that but there’s an enormous amount of the camera panning over to gerro on the sidelines where it genuinely looks like he has no idea what he’s doing and it looks like there is an extreme miscommunication or lack of complete communication between gerro and the players and often times you see coaches talking directly with players about whatever whether you can run this route better whether you can go through this progression better as a quarterback whether this stunt can be played better as a defensive lineman or a linebacker but often times you just see gerod just standing there looking like he has no idea what is going on and one of my other biggest concerns with gerro as the current head coach of the Patriots is the complete lack of communication between him and his coaching staff there was a situation in the Patriots Cardinals game most recently where New England had third and one on Arizona’s four yd line it’s pretty clear if they get a first down they have first and goal from the Cardinals 3 and a touchdown is almost inevitable after that especially with a quarterback as athletic as Drake May in the red zone They are a nightmare to defend even for as bad as the Patriots offense in 2024 has been it should have been very simple let’s just go ahead and get the first down maybe even the touchdown and cut the 16 to3 lead to a 16 to9 and pending the point after a 16 to10 game and go from there the Patriots called two runs right up the middle and did not get the first down and Arizona of course got the ball back and they didn’t make it 23-3 directly after this possession but they eventually made it 23-3 and obviously there is a substantial difference between a 23-3 game and a 16 to10 game midway or even late in the third quarter obviously once you’re down 23 to3 on the road 99% of the time and probably even more than that you are not coming back much less with a rookie quarterback but to make matters worse there was a question after the game in which a reporter asked gerod Mayo about the thought process of potentially running it with Drake May given that Drake May’s game resembles a young Josh Allen a very athletic quarterback who again is a nightmare to defend in the Red Zone because you always have to account for where he is and Gerard Mayo said quote you said it not me end quote and that is an extreme lack of media training that’s also a very very poor response because that is throwing your offensive coordinator under the bus and that also signifies that you and the offensive coordinator are not on the same page now I know we all get frustrated with Bill bich during interviews at times as in a situation like that he would probably say something along the lines of yeah we have to perform better and we’ll get better as a team collectively and you know we’ll talk about it in practice and meetings this week and we’re on the Cincinnati and things of that nature but the point is is Bill bich would never throw a direct offensive coordinator under the bus and then the next day walk it back and Patriots fans have started calling this walk back Monday where Gerard Mayo says the next day that well he didn’t really mean what he said and that him and Alex Van pel the offensive coordinator are now on good terms and that that was a miscommunication he didn’t really mean what he said there is a lot wrong with the Patriots organization right now but to have a coach constantly walk back comments is a bad thing and this is also a bad thing because Gerard Mayo was basically groomed over the past four or five years that he was going to be the next Patriots head coach this was again not a normal head coaching search it was all but written that Gerard Mayo will replace bill bich when the time comes and Gerard Mayo still effectively answers questions like a player now I want it to be clear I’m not anti- former player being the head coach as there are countless examples of great head coaches across the NFL currently that are former players and you can start to think of them immediately whether you’re thinking of Kevin oconnell Dan Campbell Jim Harbaugh whoever and I probably forgot a couple but the point is I am not anti- former player being a head coach but when your former player head coach answers questions like he’s still a player that is a problem and this is also a problem because the crafts the owners of the Patriots basically said for years that gerro was going to be a head coach and how would it look after they fired him after a single season which the Patriots severely underachieved would the next head coach come in and basically say well I’m coaching for my job every single season because the crafts can walk back what they said at the snap of a finger and again they are the owners so nobody’s really going to say anything to them and if they do it’s not really going to matter because they are the ones making the decisions on my job and ultimately the food on my family’s plate now I know coaches get paid in the millions of dollars so gerod Mayo is not going to be hurting financially after this but the point is how would it look for a next head coach candidate to want to go to New England in what is a very bad situation so I think they ultimately have to write it out with Gerard Mayo at this point although I would welcome the firing of Gerard Mayo strictly because when you ask this question of what part of the new England Patriots from September back in week 1 until now at the time of this video release in the middle of December what part of the 2024 Patriots got better from where we were back in September to now with gerod mayo as the team’s head coach and I’ll be honest I don’t think the answer is anything positive if you want to say Drake May has gotten better from September to now I don’t think you can attribute that directly to Gerard mayo and that Gerard Mayo is helping him go through progressions and helping him read route Concepts in the quarterback room I don’t think that would go to Gerard Mayo Not only would Gerard not get credit for that but truly what has been the most positive experience under the leadership of gerro mayo in year 1 is it winning on the road in Cincinnati in week 1 which I don’t want to take credit away from that that’s an impressive win for anybody but I think it kind of gets nullified when you throw in the fact that the Patriots lost the immediate six games after or maybe you want to say hey they won two out of three games over the Jets and Bears both of which will finish with double digigit wins I also have a particular bone to pick right now with gerro because he goes on a show called the Greg Hill show and I found this in my research for this video but gerro goes on the Greg Hill show every Monday morning and that is what it is coaches are going to make media appearances especially in the year 2024 I don’t have a problem with that but after the game in which the Patriots lost by double digits on the road and fell to 3 and 11 gerro was laughing and joking around like the Patriots were 11 and three and like they just won by double digits which is a complete lack of situational awareness and this was about 14 hours because if you think he was on around 9:30 a.m. eastern he had the postgame press conference against Arizona this Sunday night around 7:30 or 8:00 so we’re talking 13 or 14 hours after throwing your offensive coordinator underneath the bus we’re now laughing and joking around with the media in a game in which we got beat by double digits on the road for our 11th loss of the season and that doesn’t sit well with me for the future of Gerard Mayo as the head coach of the Patriots and I can’t imagine that any player looks at that and thinks man we have a great leader as our head coach and this is the guy that I truly want to play for so when you look at the situation entering the offseason do the crafts make the decision to admit their wrong and to fire Gerard Mayo after year 1 in which I would put the season in the likes of the Urban Meyer and Nathaniel Hackett or do they try and ride it back with a year two and effectively waste another year of Drake May’s rookie window and that is a very easy decision at least to me but I don’t know what the crafts are going to do because that would also have to acknowledge that they were significantly wrong on gerod mayo and then basically say to a new head coach look we were wrong please come in and save our franchise because at this point we desperately need it now positively I will say the Patriots have over $130 million in cap space and if I were the general manager of the Patriots Elliot Wolf the first decision I would make this offseason is to call the Cincinnati Bengals and say look I don’t care what the cost is reasonably of course I’m not going to trade two number one picks you get the point I don’t care what the draft capital is assuming it would probably be around a second round pick maybe maybe a 2026 first round pick we can iron out the details like but the point is if I’m Elliot wolf I am calling the GM of the Cincinnati Bengals and saying T Higgins is going to be a patriot we are going to pay him let’s get this done I do not want T Higgins going anywhere else assuming that the Bengals are not going to pay T Higgins and if they do pay T Higgins then I am doing absolutely everything in my power to upgrade the receiving room to bring in a Chris Godwin or a Stefon Diggs to give Drake may an actual chance in his second year the offensive line around the Patriots right now is also terrible as Vian low is a former late round pick for a reason and it shows every Sunday and granted he was a backup entering the year for a reason but leaden Robinson has also been pretty bad as a rookie and the Patriots offensive line needs upgraded as well in the worst way and whenever the Patriots select in the first round of the 2025 draft that has to go to the offensive line I know taroa McMillan would be a very enticing pick for the Patriots to draft but at this point I would rather them go with a receiver in the second round and upgrade the offensive line to give Drake May a Fighting Chance because what he has right now is not going to help him win this team multiple games and to legitimately get to a point where they can compete in the division and be a 500 team because they are very very far away from being an 8-9 or 9 and8 team at this point in time one thing I do want to quickly clarify with the offensive tackle receiver situation both of which positions do England will need this off season is if they were to sign a Ronnie Stanley or a cam Robinson both of whom have played well in 2024 and especially cam since being traded to Minnesota is that they don’t have to draft an offensive lineman in that specific scenario I also don’t want there to be this belief that if taroa McMillan is available and is the second or third best Prospect in the class but the best offensive lineman is the 13th or 14th best player in the class that they have to go o line at number three or number four overall when they address the offensive line in free agency by bringing in big veterans like that that would be an ideal scenario for New England to be able to bring in veteran guys that can really set the tone in the lock room which New England does not have a lot of the moment but why I think the Patriots are in a pretty bad situation is because they are in the opposite situation as to what they had in the early 2000s whenever they were the big Dynasty in the early 2000s nobody wanted to go play a Tom Brady or Bill bich team and nobody did for a span of again 18 to 20 years but it’s similar with Josh Allen and Shawn mcder nobody wants to go play Josh Allen On Any Given Sunday now for Patriots fans watching obviously it is not to the level of Tom Brady and Bill bich but the point is there is an Elite quarterback in the division that will probably win the MVP this year and is a guy that is only 28 years old and a player that will be here for not just two or three years but probably the next decade and that’s a disadvantage for a head coach coming in to look at and say all right well we have to coach against this guy for the next decade because Buffalo is not going to allow him to leave the building and Josh will always be very well compensated and will probably be one of the best quarterbacks for again the next 8 to 10 years I really don’t like to get into the discussion of the N fell of anything more than two or three years but with Josh again if he stays healthy I am willing to say that he will be one of the best players for the next several seasons and that’s a disadvantage for New England and that’s one that the AFC East had to go up for for 20 years with Tom Brady and that is not something head coaches want to go against I don’t think the Patriots are doomed by any means and I don’t think Drake May is completely out to dry either that he’s going to be a complete failure as an NFL player he has a lot of talent but the situation around him right now is pretty bad and I think it’s one of the worst in the league and how the Patriots attacked this offseason is going to be detrimental to May’s success over the next couple of years they have to attack free agency with both the offensive line and the receiving room and even then I would still rather them draft another receiver or offensive lineman in the top five to do everything they can to ensure Drake May does not fail because The Supporting Cast that he’s had during his rookie season has been downright woeful not just from the offensive skill positions which we knew heading into the season was going to be bad but from a coaching staff
