this is the New York Rangers and they are in the middle of a complete freef fall with fans booing them off the ice and rumors swirling around daily the fact that things have gone so bad so quickly is a major concern coming into the season it was fair to say that the Rangers were considered Stanley Cup contenders making it all the way to the Conference Finals last season only to be eliminated by the eventual Cup champs themselves indicated that the Rangers would be knocking on the door yet again but things have gone completely off the rails with management sending a memo saying that the team is open for business and following it up by trading their Captain the Rangers have fallen out of a playoff spot and right now they look flat out broken something has gone rotten in the Big Apple and it goes beyond just what we’re seeing on the ice let’s rewind this sucker all the way back to just 8 short months ago the New York Rangers are President Trophy winners and they set a franchise record with 50 5 wins and 114 points before appearing in their second Conference Final in three years and if they didn’t run into the defending Cup champs who knows what could have happened fast forward to this season and the Rangers look like they were picking up where they left off with a 126 and2 record however GM Chris jury wasn’t fooled by that at all he saw how this team was playing and sent out a memo to all 31 other teams stating that the Rangers were open for business the two big names included were Captain Jacob trba and longest tenur Ranger in Chris krider after that it seemed like the Rangers crumbled with all the noise a stretch of six regulation losses in seven games compelled jury to act by trading the Rangers captain Jacob trouba to the Anaheim Ducks now it seems like with every game that passes the losses get worse while the fan base grows more disgusted so what the hell is actually going on here how broken is this team truly and is there any hope that they find their way back well let’s start with the gigant antic fat elephant in the room with this team and that is defending looking at the advanced numbers in their first 17 games compared to their last 10 their defensive numbers have only gotten worse with this core and under Peter lavet this team has lived and died off the rush last year the Rangers and their D consistently had the green light to jump up in the play to create offense with a weapon like our Tami panan being one of the very best in the game at changing speeds and playing East West to find the late man the Rangers can and have crushed teams when they D steps up at the right moment to present themselves as an option but in this stretch the Rangers have been a disaster with their reads the Rangers give up 6.04 Rush scoring chances per game that’s third worst in the NHL and they also give up 5.81 odd man rushes per game at five on five that is the worst in the NHL some of it is game management like we see here this right now is a0 Z game with three rangers below the hash marks here pinching is flat out irresponsible the Rangers do it anyway though sure enough it’s a two-on-one and a goal against and when you concede that first goal you’re forced to chase the game but you have to understand that this is how the Rangers want to play they thrive on aggressiveness and it’s why they’re also seventh in the NHL at generating High danger scoring chances when five on five if there is a 50/50 Puck the Rangers give their D the go-ahead to drive down the wall hold on to the puck and look for a play into the middle the main key that’s just torching them right now is the lack of support in case things go wrong their style of play doesn’t have to be high risk and high reward like it currently is take the defending Cup champs aggression is key to their success but their execution is far more calculated Defenders are more aware of when to step up and when they do they have the forward support in place to cover for them to avoid constant odd man rushes for the Rangers there seems to be a disconnect between the forward and dgroup in their execution because the Rangers want to be on top of their opponents they’re vulnerable to having three players getting caught the hash marks to create pressure here Fox Say the D is below the hash marks trying to hold pressure but with krider being the last forward he’s going to swing in below the hash marks as well to provide support now all of a sudden you have four Rangers below the hash marks you either win this Puck battle or you’re screwed kryder does fill in for Fox but he seals the wall instead of holding the middle and with one pass it’s chipped off the boards and this entire play is just a reflection of how things are going for New York kyou strips lingren of his soul and goes in on a breakaway for a goal having a responsible High F3 is crucial for limiting a man rushes but when the Rangers F3 are above the hash marks the communication and execution is still way off on this play the F3 and will kulie is in a decent spot as the puck is carried out he retreats to the middle to prevent a change of sides okay that’s fine but then here comes the switch Florida gains the line and both Defenders are pointing to a guy for kie to take the left defender in Jones wants him to take the trailer so that he can take the man driveing the net and the right d can step up on the puck carrier meanwhile Schneider who is the right d is pointing to the puck carrier so that kolie can apply pressure while he takes the driving forward what happens well two Defenders take the driving forward and no one picks up the puck carrier as he steps right in to wire one home it’s these tiny details in communication that are crucial for defending with the ranger style of play it has almost become a vicious cycle because they concede early goals and are playing from behind they’re forced to get more aggressive to create off defense and when you swing and miss it can turn into a track meet however when the Rangers are able to execute on those details good things happen like this goal here versus St Louis they’re still down by two in this game and with a 50/50 Puck the D gets aggressive and the high of3 and Koli again stays patient and Sprints towards this ice to cover up the Rangers have layers they keep it in and sure enough he and New York get rewarded with a goal that right there is what calculated aggression looks like however the issues for New York go far beyond just defending the rush the $92 million man in neor shurkin simply can’t bail them out each and every game he saved 8.45 goals above expected in 13 starts through November 19th over the past 10 games shurkin and quick have stopped 81.2% of slot shots on net that’s good for 23rd in the league but that’s down from 87.5% over New York’s first 17 games which was second in the league at that time again that seems to be partly because of an adjustment that they’ve made to their defensive system we’ve talked about on this channel of the movement of teams playing a hybrid system because four out of the last five Cup champs have played this system to win it’s a Zone coverage down low and when the puck goes near the top of the zone you attach to a man on man last year the Rangers just played a straight man-on-man coverage all throughout the zone and although they didn’t reach their ultimate goal of winning the cup it’s still aligned with their aggressive style of play on both sides of the puck now it looks like the Rangers and their staff saw this trend and decided to hop on the hybrid system it’s also worth noting that in the last 15 years not a single team has won the cup using a man-on-man coverage which is really just another reason why they made the switch with the Rangers now moving into a Zone coverage or box plus one when the puck is low they are struggling to defend here the Rangers are in decent position everyone has a quadrant but zabad loses body positioning down low and lingren is just too slow at picking up his man almost the exact same play happens against Carolina everyone’s in a quadrant Puck swings low and Miller loses body positioning while shurkin is sleeping at the wheel teams are seeing this and they know that if you can get the Rangers to defend down low you can get body positioning on them and cash them with their pants down when trying to sort out their coverages without the safety net of eagor or quick playing out of their skull the Rangers are getting exposed now when you see all these tiny mental errors and mistakes it’s not hard to believe that the team has stopped responding to the current message when GM Chris Drury sent out that memo everything started going the other way the Rangers do still have weapons and pieces to be a good hockey team but in order to have success with any system everyone needs to buy in and when you don’t it becomes clear as day usually either rightly or wrongly the first Domino to fall is the head coach especially in today’s NHL where you can get fired a year or two after you’ve won coach of the year the fall from Contender to fraud for the New York Rangers has been Swift and right now they look like a shell of their former self with every loss that PS on it looks more and more apparent that changes to the coaching staff and roster will become inevitable with that message of change looming over the organization every player looks unsettled and the Rangers look broken and unless they find a way to fix it quickly there will be another massive change in the
