π Video Description:
Alabama came to the Smith Center on Wednesday night and rolled the North Carolina Tar Heels 94-79, notching another win for the SEC over the ACC in the now one-sided early season challenge. UNCβs starting guard trio shot 11-41 collectively while the Tideβs length and athleticism across the court produced easy basket after easy basket on the other end of the floor. The one bright spot for the Heels? Freshman Ian Jackson tossed a career high of 23 points in the losing effort. Dewey Burke joins host Tommy Ashley to break down the disappointing and familiar loss for the Tar Heels.

welcome in to another inside Carolina postgame show I’m Tommy Ashley we are sponsored by Johnny t-shirt and congruity mat congruity hr.com that is Dewey Burke this is is North Carolina’s third straight loss Carolina drops to 4- four 9479 Dewey uh opening thoughts I mean everybody wanted to see the starting lineup change and Drake pal certainly deserved to be in it I’m not sure uh it makes a lot of difference with the issues that this team has yeah there’s not a lot of positives to point to Ian Jackson would be the only one for me in terms of of this game Drake Drake’s been good and will continue to be good but uh yeah look outclassed in the front Court um I’m shocked statistically somehow we outrebounded them in that game it didn’t feel like it certainly and if there was a stat for Meaningful rebounds versus meaningless rebounds they definitely had more meaningful rebounds they made more threes they got to the rim without putting up much of a fight lots of dunks lots of layups and as you said to me off air unfortunately it never really felt like we were in it and it was sort of eerily similar to the Auburn game but I think the problem uh and we’ll get into the the X’s and O’s and there there are things there but uh I think we’re we’re outclassed from a roster perspective unfortunately I mean our bigs just they just give us nothing and it’s very atypical as has been talked about ad nauseum and we’re getting nothing from the front court and then in the back court we’re small and it’s it’s not a good recipe yeah let’s start on the defensive end and something I said tweeted it and this is something we talk about a lot on the football side on defense at least is is like find something you’re good at and do it figure out what you’re good at and commit to it 100% in football it’s stopping the run or whatever you want to do this Carolina team I don’t see a Rhyme or Reason doy with what’s going on defensively and it’s not new phenomenon this has been an issue for North Carolina for a few years last year they figured it out what do you see in there because whatever they’re trying is not working yeah last year we had an anchor though we had a fifth year big who was you know statistically one of the 10 best bigs we’ve ever had you wouldn’t call him one of the 10 best bigs to ever wear the Jersey but statistically he was up there and he was solid he was reliable you knew you basically had 17 and 10 out of of him and maybe 17 and 17 you could throw the ball into the post and occupy eyes you and I have talked I don’t know how long we’ve been doing this Tommy feels like 10 years but I always talk to you about occupying eyes you know you throw the ball into Bott he occupies eyes people have to pay attention to that and so on the offside your your motion your screening your fundamental uh stuff that you’re running is more effective RJ occupies eyes but he’s my size guy I mean he’s just he’s small and he’s not Elite from a quickness perspective and so we just struggle to scare anybody when we have the basketball who are they worried about and um I know you asked me about defense uh when the other team is big long and athletic and you’re just not uh you have to be the gutti toughest you know refuse to give in group if you’re going to really guard and we’ve not shown the ability to do that I mean you can think back to players that car I mean think one of my teammates right Wes Miller right he he’s also my size but he was the toughest grittiest you know in your in your stuff guy and he made up for his lack of size with that I don’t see that here um and so unfortunately we’re undersized we’re not as athletic we’re not as long and and then I also don’t see uh un fortunately the the toughness to to dig in and grind that you would need uh given the things I just said you know for so many years we’ve been Elite from a talent perspectiv and and spoiled and gifted we aren’t that you know we’re quite ordinary from an athleticism length and size perspective so you have to be really great at the things you can control and we just aren’t not so far yeah that’s like we talk about all the time control what you can control and you’re right I mean case in point the effort level on on defense Alabama has a run out in the first half Drake pow runs down Sprints prevents the initial layup and there’s four maybe all five Alabama guys there to get the offensive rebound laid in and no other Carolina guys in sight that can’t happen I mean and that’s that’s one of those things I I know what pass coaches would have done at that moment um huberts in a jam because he doesn’t have anybody else that he can put in there but we’ve talked about the effort that Withers puts out there we talk about the effort that Jaylen Washington puts out there um Seth Trimble was off tonight I mean he was in somewhere else and and to your point RJ and Kad are just not big enough or physical enough to handle it and then it seems like they’re running up against these High I mean could you imagine an Alabama and Auburn game I mean goodness me that’s going to be a war there’s a war going to go on down the road in Durham and a little bit same type thing but do we how do you correct the effort issue if it I don’t doubt that these guys play hard you know they think they’re playing hard but looking at it from afar and and whether you’re there or on TV doesn’t feel like it and it certainly doesn’t seem like it so somebody in the chat says it’s effort coachable I know what Roy Williams used to say never had never wanted to have to coach effort never did I’m your thoughts there with this team because something is to your point they’re not good enough to get by just being good enough they’ve got to play hard and play harder than the other team and and let’s be let’s be fair that is something that coach Williams said all the time I refuse to coach effort I I never should have to he still did right I mean you you had plenty of guys that he had to kick in the ass to play hard and so that it sounds nice and I’m not speaking poorly of my my coach but you have to coach effort you do I know he didn’t like to or or say that he had to but every coach does but uh and I don’t I didn’t play for Hubert uh even as an assistant so I don’t know what he’ll do tomorrow in practice or if they’re off the next day but if that was when I played we would likely walk into not the gym but the practice gym and there would be no rims and it would be two and a half hours of defense and conditioning and that was him sending us a message that it’s it doesn’t even matter what you want to try to do on the offensive end if you’re not willing to dig in and guard and box out and be tough why do we even need a rim and why do we even need balls and we had a couple of those practices every year I played and they were awful uh as as you’d expect but you know he was you know red hot mad coming into those practices is and uh it worked it mattered and so there’s some kind of a reset here that needs to take place um they’ve lost three in a row they’ve been outclassed uh on the backboard again athletically all those things those things we can’t fix there’s no other new bigs walking through the door this year and so again the things we can control are how hard you play you know your pride in the jersey and you know not just sorry I’m getting a FaceTime from my spouse um the things the things you can control um are not in our control at the moment and and that’s unacceptable if I’m a if I’m on the staff if I’m a player if I’m around the program uh we aren’t we aren’t doing the things that we should be doing and uh you can call that coaching and there’s certainly a part of that I I I’m not going to sit here and not say Huber on the staff are not responsible But I me I believe that’s more on the guys like you it’s inexcusable you only get so many times ask any of the guys I’ve played with anybody who’s done it’s an old adage but like man one more time one more time to put it on in the for me it was the ACC Big 10 challenge this is the ACC SEC challenge Marquee game ESPN I’m in New York City walking back to my hotel every bar I walk by every bar I walk by this game is on that’s what it is and we didn’t play like it was that big and it certainly ref reflected in in in the scoring Carolina down at half down by double digits at the half uh let’s talk about the offense a little bit because Carolina I felt like this year was going to be Pack 12 football right like old Lincoln Riley football I’m going to outscore everybody the defense is going to give give up a ton of points I’m going to outscore everybody we’re going to win some games might be might have to win 100 to 98 but we’re going to do that Elliot CAD 0 for four combined with RJ Davis seven for 24 so that’s seven for 28 toss in Seth Trimble at 4 for 13 so you going 11 for 41 from The Big Three that you have to have RJ struggled this year Dewey um is it is it time to be concerned and worried and red flag and Sirens at this point in the season eight games in yes I mean you you have to say yes to that you know we talked on an earlier podcast Marcus paage struggled and I I want to go back and look at his first 10 games his senior year because it wasn’t what he was in his junior year he eventually got there and was a marquee player that helped carry a team all the way to the National Championship I just make the point that they’re they somewhat similar you know they were they’re undersized they weren’t Elite from a quickness perspective they were skilled they could shoot it but Marcus really struggled in the early parts of his senior year so it’s not like it’s for gone that we’re never going to get him back um but he’s pressing because the team is struggling uh he had so many other weapons around him last year and so many of those guys were so experienced uh and we had size and we just we don’t have those things and so he’s he’s clearly pressing and that’s tough and I don’t know how much look Ian tonight showed he could be a threat and more minutes for him are warranted obviously career high 23 uh but who are you worried about if you’re guarding us other than RJ well nobody and so they put a 610 guy on him and said hey we’re just going to guard this guy with length and make him shoot over the top if he you know if he scores 30 he might but we still think we’re going to win and he didn’t shoot it well he didn’t score 30 and they blew us out uh I just don’t think on a Scouting Report perspective you’re you’re real worried about what we’re doing offensively when you run the pick and roll all the time it looked like Alabama wasn’t even worried about the rle man or the pick man so is there a change you can make there in the offense what if and I’m not saying you know Hubert Davis needs to change up everything but what are options for this team that you see watching from afar um because I saw a lot of standing around guys standing Each corner and RJ to your point trying to find a trying to find an opening to get a drive because he couldn’t get a shot off over whether it was Grant Nelson or the Freshman big they had on him at times so so what are the options here because it seems pretty limited it does and and you know you you mentioned that Alabama wasn’t concerned about the rle man it’s because they’re they were so big and athletic at The Rim it was like they were daring us to to throw the roll P to jayen it’s like well I’ll just meet you at the summit and and I’ll take my chances and then when we had several pi pops for Jaylen who’s marketed to be a good shooter he didn’t make any of them right so you’re not concerned you know every four minutes you have a timeout and you go and you assess what just happened the last four minutes and if you’re Nate oat in your staff you’re saying if they want to throw pick and Pops to Jaylen Washington and he wants to shoot threes let him do it right because he’s not under the rim to offensive rebound and we just rebound it and go and so you’re just continually telling your team focus on RJ he’s the only one that can get 40 on us and that to me that’s what it looked like their defensive game plan was all eyes on RJ let’s dare the rest of them to beat us and we shot the ball horribly so um look there’s no there’s no good answer right I mean how so how do you solve that good ball Mo go good ball movement good screening good schematic uh but the best screening in movement it’s still hard to score when the other team is so much bigger and longer than you uh and we’re not going to solve that and so uh to me the only answer is getting in transition and the only way we get in transition is if you guard and defend and box out and finish the defense with a rebound and we’ve talked about this defensive emphasis the number of times on our practice plan the defensive emphasis was finish the defensive possession with a box out we don’t do that enough we don’t guard well enough that we can get out and run because that’s how you beat size is you outrun them uh um but we what was our points in transition I don’t have it in front of me tell me they it was actually better than I thought they they had 18 to 15 this is why I don’t really look at Stats a ton Carolina outscored them in transition 18 to 15 Carolina out rebounded them Carolina had 15 points Second Chance points to eight for Alabama the bench outscored Alabama points in the paint Carolina huh points in the paint what was that Carolina outscored him 50 to 44 which I never would have W thought that watching that game I mean they made a bunch more threes but I to answer the question you asked how do you figure out a way to score more baskets uh the half court doesn’t appear to be it we don’t have a post player to throw it into RJ struggling uh kadoo can’t really create for himself because he’s not a threat from the perimeter Ian Jackson can create his own shot the way we score more and get some kind of flow is in transition to me absolutely so many in the chat said they kept missing layups Carolina actually wasn’t terrible miss it was 17 of 26 which I would have thought it was a lot worse than that I would have thought Alabama had more than 23 layup attempts um but they did not it’s just a weird stats don’t tell the story it’s funny how it felt versus what the stats are but it just it we didn’t feel like we were a threat unfortunately I think Alabama was very comfortable they ran their stuff they got to the rim when they wanted they you know they set a bunch of back screens and side screens for open threes off penetration um I just you know somebody just said in the in the chat I don’t think Alabama broke a sweat it kind of felt that way yeah exactly Alabama lead wire to wire pretty much um we’re going to end it with a positive though we’re 16 minutes in we’re talking with Dewey Burke and Johnny t-shirt and congruity of sponsors Dewey Ian Jackson 23 tonight uh 10 of 17 from the field he did it at all three levels he played a little bit of good defense he gets lost on defense some too um Drake po had another nice game didn’t shoot enough Drake scored 18 I think a week ago against Michigan State only scored six tonight but he’s another one of those guys are those two guys the hope for this season at least to make it somewhat joyful watching I think I think you just got to let them go you got to live with the fact that they’re going to make mistakes I mean in being fair and I don’t think I’m being overly critical like Ian made some brutal defensive mistakes like he got switched on Sears a couple times and he was in the in the blender like yeah no shot and uh but that’s what being a Freshman is and I think you’re gonna have to live with that uh because he’s pretty explosive on the offensive end and and look I I think you Hubert started Drake right for a reason Withers Withers is tough for me to watch out there for a number of reasons and he’s 23 years old like the future is not there and so Drake’s got to play a ton Ian’s got to play a ton um the one thing we haven’t tried is like super small ball and and maybe that’s something we attempt it would be anti the way we’ve always played and uh but I think you got to consider it you know try put Drake at the five um but I think Ian’s going to play more and more so explosive offensively like you said all three levels finishes at The Rim mid-range made some catch and shoot threes made a the the step back three on the bottom left of the TV screen was that was NBA level right I mean that was that was beautiful so look yeah we got to play those guys it’s not even a question yeah Carolina struggled against Alabama goes to four and four on the season the SEC is Flatout killing the ACC um I like when I see the ACC commercial and I don’t know if they showed it in New York but it’s like the best college basketball conference the ACC and I was thinking this like been a while hadn’t it I was going to say this is not the mid 90s the SEC is dominating Carolina dominated uh Dey it’s always a pleasure to talk to you I know you’re out and about but uh you take the time to join us at inside Carolina man it’s always fun somebody asked why do y’all keep doing these shows Carolina sucks blah blah blah blah and I said because there is a job to be done and ins South Carolina’s going to do it so appreciate it it’s hard to do them when we when we don’t play well it’s much more fun to do it when we uh when we win but uh hopefully we give some perspective and uh look I think we have quality kids good character kids and they’re they’re getting tested like they’ve probably never been tested before everybody’s talking about it they’re four and four they’re about to be unranked uh so what are you made of the schedule doesn’t get much easier absolutely it does not shout out to the 600 people that were in the live chat shout out to everybody at ins South Carolina and everybody be safe and stay warm do we appreciate it we’ll talk soon
