welcome in to another Ralph report where we typically talk about my biggest takeaway from the last night of college basketball action but because Thursday night slate was pretty light we’re skipping that and I want to focus instead on something that had a ground SW support on social media this week was something of a social media movement within college basketball circles and that was to have a new college basketball video game but I’m not just here talking about it because of some tweets because of my own personal desires to have a new college ball video game there’s actually some substance behind it and I I think we’re as close to getting a new college basketball video game as we ever have so as you all know if you’re watching this video and you are a college basketball fan or especially a college basketball video game fan no college basketball video game has been released since 2009 when EA Sports released NCA basketball 10 that was the last one that was ever made 2K stopped with college troops 2K8 which many still consider to be one of the greatest sports video games of all time certainly the best college basketball video game of all time is still played frequently by college basketball fans and sports fans and video game players of of every age I still have my own that I play quite often whether you have PS2 version PlayStation 3 Xbox or Xbox 360 still a very playable game was last Main in 2007 the last version of col B of any kind was 2009 it’s been 15 years since we had a college basketball video game there is I I think appetite for it is obviously shown in the college basketball fan base by the outcry this week the reason why there was outcry this week more so the normal is that EA Sports college football 25 was officially announced that that became the highest selling Sports video game of all time this year in the number one selling game of any genre in the United States for 2024 it was something no Sports video game had ever done and it was a resounding resounding success prea sports with EA Sports col football 25 sold over 6.5 million copies so far made them over $500 million they were over there were $500,000 people that played the trial of EA Sports college football before the game officially got released I was one of them it was a lot of fun was a fun time how that compares to the last n football game that was released so just as there’s been this long drought with college basketball video games there’s been the same drought with an football games the last football game that got released before 25 was an Football 14 was released back in the fall of summer fall of 2013 that sold 1.5 million copies it was a very successful game that game went away because of the Edo Banning case that EA had to start compensating players for using their name image of likeness in the video game which EA had kind of skated by by using player jersey numbers and not names but the course kind of realized that yeah you’re you’re using their name image and likeness we need to compensate them which at the time you could not do Under NCA rules that game got paused once the NCA flipped it on and said you could prop from from nil this game got back into creation it was finally released this summer to the resounding resounding success now the cause B video game went away for different reasons it was not because of the nil case the Ed oanon case it was because the game didn’t sell quite frankly there was not a huge market for it in 2007 when College troops 2K8 and N basketball 08 both came out the two combined split roughly down the middle slightly more towards Su roughly down the middle combined to sell 530,000 copies which is a third of what NC football 14 sold NC basketball 10 the last game that came out in 2009 sold just 150,000 copies it was then discontinued because there simply was not a market for it at the time the reason why there’s a real chance that it might come back as we saw from in uh College fole 25 is there’s a huge support in the College Community College sports fan Community for updated games I don’t know if we need one every single year that’s a a personal preference and for game developers to decide but when you go a decade or decade and a half without a game almost two decades now between College TRS 2K8 which again still one of the greatest video games of all time still very playable you want updated you want updated Graphics you want updated uh conferences certainly you want updated rosters you want updated features transfer portal and all the different things you want to be able to immerse yourself in that Sport and a video game the same way you do with the NFL soccer NBA things like that the fact there was such resounding support for the AA sports college football game far beyond what anybody had anticipated EA Sports themselves Market experts themselves college football fans themselves maybe not all culture ball fans I think a lot of culture ball fans knew how big this was going to be but because it was such a resounding success it’s causing the game developers particularly EA and 2K who made the college basketball games in the past to look at what they’re doing Mike straw of Insider gaming.com tweeted out that both studios are looking at process it would take to make a game of college basketball not together this would be you know they’re talking amongst themselves 2K to create a 2K a 2K game EA to obviously create an EA game but there are conversations about creating one which is a place we have not been at and place we would not be at without the success of college football 25 I also don’t know if we would get there without the increased interest in college basketball in general a lot has been made of the the growth of the women’s game with particularly with Caitlyn Clark and that’s been phenomenal to watch but the men’s side has grown immensely as well the last several regular seasons and N tournaments have set records post pandemic for being the most watched n tournaments col B regular seasons uh in history they keep topping themselves even that 2023 final four national championship game that everybody kind of rode off because it was Yukon FAU Miami and San Diego State weren’t the brand names in that final four those games still outperformed every single NBA Finals game from That season there was more interests in that than there were the NBA finals and the NBA there there’s lot made on social media this week too about how down NBA ratings are they’re down almost 50% from where they were just over a decade to go yet despite the diminished TV interest in NBA the ratings for 2k’s NBA 2K series sales went up for 2K 25 and there are people have their own issues with that game and the microtransactions and things in there that is something for a different day but we’re not seeing the interest on the front end but we’re seeing it on the video game side of things college basketball has the rising interest on the just TV and interest side of things if you com just extrapolate that to the video game side of things it’s safe to assume that based on that and the desire for a college football game there’d be a pretty good interest in a college basketball game that it would do pretty well I don’t know if it would top college football 25 I I don’t think that it would it’s be hard to say this game would be the bestselling game of all time again but this is a deprived Market a one that by the time a game would be released potentially would be two decades since College got released potentially since potentially two decades since nay basketball 10 got released keep in mind they are talking about whether it’s worth making the game right now when they decide to it’s still going to take a couple of years for it to actually be released and be in our hands so we can play it it’s going to be a long process this is not something that they can turn it on make a new college basketball game for next year but it will be something that if they decide to Could Happen a couple years down the line one of the big hurdles of making a college basketball game this was a big hurdle with the college football game too was how do you get everything into it from a cultural ball perspective you had 120 plus FBS teams you had to get all their stadiums get all their rosters how are you going to license 700,000 players and get all those guys in the game all of the the school features and make things a true authentic experience well EA didn’t go to all of those sites and get everything they needed they did for some of the things but a lot of the things they had the schools send them and there was such a ground slow of support from the schools to give a what they needed so they could be a part of this game that EA got what they needed they figured it out they sent out a form for players who wanted to opt in they compensated them with $600 on a copy of the game schools sent in pictures of stadiums from every single angle different lighting pictures of uniforms and it allowed EA to capture everything in in a truly authentic fashion in a way that before was a very painstaking process because you didn’t have the technology that you have today college basketball is a bigger you’re a beast cuz there are 364 teams there are not as many players there are 364 different programs you’d have to encapsulate and try to represent authentically or as authentically as possible in this game EA has already laid out how you can do this and E already has a lot of the licenses from college football they don’t you know it’s just the FBS teams but that’s a third of the way there the groundwork has been laid out for the logistics of how this would happen and that was one of the big hurdles with this so if you have Logistics figured out and it looks like there’s going to be significant interest or would be significant interest in this game that has led to getting the ball rolling to
