[Music] the Reuben amarim era kicked off with a tactical display that showed both promising Evolution and concerning vulnerability as United’s new buildup patterns clashed with IPS switch’s intelligent exploitation of space so let’s take a close look at amar’s tactics starting with United in possession what impressed me most about United’s buildup was how quickly we’re seeing amarim Implement his strong tactical identity that he had at sporting and tactical identity is one of the primary things that ten hog struggled with and it started right from the buildup and when onano was on the ball the shape was fascinating it’s clear that amarim loves to have three defenders in the buildup phase to allow them to switch from side to side easily during the buildup and cover the width of the pitch so whenever onano was on the ball if they remained like this they would technically have had four in this deeper Zone and initially it seems strange to have the oldest Center back playing as one of the wider center backs as common convention is to have the oldest Center back in the middle to give them a little bit more protection like we saw with Thiago Silva when he was at Chelsea however the reason for this became clear very quickly delish is the best on the ball of these three and much like we saw at sporting amarim wanted his Central Center back to quickly move into the Midfield region whenever the ball was active and this worked in conjunction with the Midfield as this would then trigger Erikson to move slightly higher up as well what this also meant is where before they only had two in Midfield now they have three and it made them much more difficult to press as a result especially as IP switch usually only had a Midfield two as well and now Ericson could begin to move higher up the pitch and explore the space either on the left hand side where he was early on or later on more in this right hand space depending on if Fernandez was high or dropping in himself particularly early on we did see the center back moving higher up the pitch in order to compact that space But the big problem here is already obvious as this leaves a massive Gap in the defense so more and more ipswitch were reluctant to push their Center back that high up the pitch but ipswitch weren’t sitting ducks and they were adapting constantly throughout this match so instead of pressing with the center back what we ended up seeing is both of their wider forwards sitting deeper at least initially to make it much harder to find that double pivot whether it was Deli higher up or Ericson still there because now what this did was give their deeper pivots the room and the permission to concentrate on tracking any men who were dropping between the lines but things weren’t that simple because higher up the pitch ipswitch still did want to be more aggressive with the Press so we would see the Winger attempt to keep the pivot in their cover Shadow was still pressing however ipswich’s press actually wasn’t the most coordinated so the pivot could still find Space to receive the ball in this Midfield region and this caused massive problems as the KnockOn effect would mean now a pivot would have to abandon the man higher up and now United could begin playing through the lines so because the Winger had a lot of onus to press in the second half we saw another adaptation as now it was dap who would begin slightly deeper and his role would be to keep the pivot in his cover Shadow and this would allow the Winger to press more aggressively knowing that the pivot was covered and that they still had enough Central protection to deal with any progression but as the game wore on ipswitch pressed less and they were more concerned with being defensively solid and that was primarily by switching to somewhat of a back five as Burns was extremely deep down this right hand side and this moves us onto another element of United’s attacking play that looked highly promising which is their wide exploration it was clear from early on that the left hand side was where United would look to cause most of their damage and that was through the combination of Dow and gachu higher up the pitch United still stuck with a back three in the buildup except with Delish in a more traditional position and this would free up Doo to move up down the left hand side which is why Burns was deep so often and what we saw was that both Burns and TN zeria were looking to be more man oriented on their men down the left hand side and this led to massive problems for them doow wouldn’t always push high and he would be content to receive deep at times knowing that his man would remain tight on him this now gave him options as on a couple of occasions we did see him look to get past Burns which would then see more of a two versus one against tanabi but that was not the main way he used the wiip as what United were interested in was this one versus one higher up the pitch they now had options as they could launch the ball long and hope that gacha was able to beat his Cent to back and use his Pace to get in behind but at the same time when he did receive he had enough trickery and The Bravery to look to get past the center back so we saw this isolation between these two play out in United’s favor particularly in the first half before he switched sides with Fernandez but again United had other way to take advantage of the man marking as gacha was also happy to come deep not necessarily to get on the ball but knowing that the right back would be following him wherever he went and of course this leads to a massive space in behind and rashford with his pace could at times have look to make this run although that’s something we did not see too often but it would be interesting to keep an eye on that to see if that will become a staple of amorim’s attacking play and down both Sid sides we saw that United were willing to enact more of an overload to draw IP switch’s men across the pitch and while this was mainly used in the first half it still did provide the opportunity to play switches into the opposing Wing back who would always be making aggressive runs where there was Dio on the right or do on the left hand side and the promising thing for United when they did get high up is that this shape of theirs which is a rough 325 shape allowed them to flood the box as both gacho and Fernandez were willing to either run into the box or at least provide an option on the edge of the Box meaning that numbers weren’t United’s problem it was just a matter of finding that final penetrating pass but there is something that I found quite unexpected in this match and it was a situation that emerged when United were higher up the pitch which is how the new manager used his wider center backs earlier on in the match when ipswitch would be more aggressive in the press it was more understandable that both mazwi and Evans were quite conservative as they did not have the room to advance higher up the pitch but in that second half in particular we saw ipswitch be more passive and highly focused on protecting these Central regions so particularly when Shaw came on as the left Center back the expectation would have been for one or both of these men to push extremely high up the pitch especially with the ball as what this could potentially do is allow an overload in the wide regions but more likely because ipswitch was so obsessed with protecting the center it would draw men towards the ball and reduce how compact iwit could be and create the opportunity for United to then play through the Center in a more penetrating way this is another thing to keep an eye on as amarim gets time with the team to see if those wide center backs will end up being more aggressive with the ball but let’s now look at what happened when United were not on the ball the first thing of note is that both casemiro and Erikson could be quite high up the pitch when they were looking to back up the attack and of course the immediate issue this presented was on the transition where we saw ipswitch able to penetrate that line of two fairly easily but even when United were in a more set defensive shape we did see some concerning issues the first was less of a tactical issue and more of an intensity issue as much like ipswitch United defended in a 523 with the front three looking to remain compact to prevent the ball into the pivot however that did not really happen because at times the front three would look like they were in position to defend but it was still ridiculously easy for ipswitch to find that penetrating pass and take those front three out of the game defensively immediately and of course this would have knock on effect as now Erikson and casmiro would potentially be outnumbered thus allowing ipswitch to move up the pitch much more easily so the intensity and discipline to monitor the horizontal spaces will be important for that front three as they go forward but when United were deeper they still looked to remain compact through the middle and that meant that the space was out wide and EP switch immediately looked to drop their forwards into these deeper regions and mazwi in particular would often be drawn high up as he looked to back up the Press onto his men once again this left a huge gap in the defensive Zone and Dio is of course not a natural Defender so there would be plenty of opportunity for ipswitch to find a runner in behind and this almost led to some goal scoring opportunities for them and on the right hand side we saw Hutchinson looking to exploore similar spaces when Ipswich were on the ball he consistently looked like the danger running the play and looking to find key passes that would break the United shape open he wasn’t able to do that but of course he produced a great deflected finish that led to the equalizer of course it’s way too early to read into any of the results regarding amarim but I’m still curious to see what you made of this match anything else you noticed and is there anything I mentioned that you disagree with drop it down in the comments below and if you are a curious tactical mind you’re going to
