we took a look at the worst player on every MLB team we took a look at the best player on every MLB team but you know what we haven’t done looked at the best and worst player at every MLB position independent of their squad so that’s what we’ll be doing today starting with the worst players in baseball at every spot in the field our rules here are simple firstly a player has to have played at least a third of the 2024 season to even be considered for the worst player in the league at their position a third of the season to me is around 50 games give or take a few with the final discretion being up to myself secondly any potential candidate must have played at least 51% of their games in 2024 at the position they’re being considered for this means they can have played other positions as well but must have at least made the majority of their appearances wherever I’m considering them for and lastly I’m going to select five different pitchers for this list three starters two middle relievers and a closer why three starters and two middle relievers honestly it just feels right for a list like this less than that feels like it’s too few and more seems like Overkill especially as I’m not putting together a bench or anything like that all right with all that being considered let’s hop right into it starting at catcher and making our way from there with pitchers coming last how could we select anybody behind the plate but the abject disaster that was a player who somehow managed to bat just 119 through 147 plate appearances and 48 games that’s right I’m talking about Martin Maldonado along with that Earth shatteringly Low batting average he also posted some of the other worst numbers you’ll ever see including a negative 1.3 War 174 slug 230 OBP and insanely low 15 Ops plus with 100 being League average last time I talked about him I mentioned how Clayton Kershaw’s career numbers at the plate were better than this well guess what Garrett Kohl’s were comparable and his once standout defense could even make up for this in the slightest as his Fielding run value of negative five was amongst the worst in the game as a catcher with poor grades in pretty much every metric possible when your best overall value comes on the bases when you have the slowest Sprint speed in all of the major leagues you know you’ve had a truly atrocious year first base presents bit of a dilemma as Jose Bru was easily the worst player there in 2024 but being as how he didn’t even manage to play a full quarter of the Season at just 35 games easily a full 10 away from even serious consideration for a third of the season I can’t with good consci just give him this title don’t worry it’s not like our actual Choice here DJ lameu was some sparkling ray of light the guy who’s being paid $15 million a year by the Yankees managed to throw up just seven extra base hits through 221 at bats with obviously the majority of those being taken at first base this also included a 20 4 269 259 slash with an abominable 51 Ops plus negative 1.6 war and atrocious negative 0.6 D War though his Advanced numbers per stat cast were a bit better than this regardless having a guy slug under 260 and play the majority of his games at an offensive heavy position can be considered nothing less than an active drain on your squad shout out to ell Heros Montero here as well who rivaled DJ’s incompetence with his own 55 Ops plus campaign in which he hit just four home runs RS in nearly 70 games at Coors Field second base somehow might be the easiest pick of our entire list despite the player I’m going to end up choosing here having had a really solid 2023 in Brandon Drury this guy went from about a two war in 125 games to a negative2 war with an Ops plus dropping nearly 80 points from 114 to 35 a barely above 450 Ops a sub 230 Slug and just 11 extra base hits in 97 games cements this is is not just a bad season nor even the worst season for a second baseman which it obviously is no this puts 2024 Brandon jurry amongst the worst seasons in Major League Baseball history as since the integration era only eight other players have had a lower war in a single season when they spent more of half their games at second base with that being said his Ops was actually the lowest of anyone on that list only two Short Stops in 2024 had winds above replacement totals lower than negative one and I’m pretty sure you could guess who they were Javier bayz at negative 1.1 with his Subterranean offensive numbers complemented by now withering defensive profile and Tim Anderson at negative 1.5 who’s going to end up being my choice here as he posted one of the more anemic campaigns we’ve seen in the modern era when it comes to anything resembling pop in 241 plate appearances Tim managed just three extra base hits all of them doubles coming out to a slugging percentage of 226 but what was perhaps even more bizarre was the fact that his batting average was 214 meaning he posted one of the rare instances in baseball history where his average and slugging were basically almost identical and guess what his 237 OBP wasn’t very far off these other two numbers as well as you can probably guess all of this came out to an atomically low 27 Ops plus and 463 Ops at this point it seems unlikely we’ll ever get a chance to witness the Tim Anderson we got to see from 2019 through 2022 when he made two All-Star games and even won a Silver Slugger and placed top 10 in MVP voting in 2020 perhaps the most telling aspect of how bad DJ L mayu’s season was was the fact that he was among the worst third basem in baseball as well though being as how we’ve already picked him at first base where he played more of his games he never really was in contention for the spot and honestly he probably still wasn’t a worse player last year than Noel V Marte who through 66 games posted the worst war for a third baseman at netive 1.8 one of the worst defensive Seasons we’ve seen in recent history at the hot corner with a negative 8 feeling run value in an abysmal slash line of just 210 248 301 among the most jaw-dropping numbers for me personally as well was the fact that he actually only walked nine times while striking out 75 yeah that’s almost 10ks for every one walk that’s obviously not going to cut it at the big league level it was a massive disappointment for a player coming off of an exciting showing the prior year at just 21 years old and with that our infield selections are complete moving to the Outfield now specifically with right field we have Jordan Walker who is being shuttled back and forth between the minor league Squad Squad in the majors all last year with this obviously having a pretty clear impact on his play as he went from an impressive 113 Ops Plus in his rookie year to a mark of just 71 with the mediocre 619 Ops combined with some of the worst defense in the sport tallying both a negative 0.6 DW and ne5 Fielding run value in essentially a third of the Season all of this amounted to a negative 0.9 Total War the worst total for any right fielder in 2024 hopefully the Cardinals will actually let him have a little Breathing Room in 2025 which may end up giving him a chance to utilize his am men’s potential to be a difference making bat in their lineup for years to come or at least figure out decisively if he’s more bust than boom heading over to center field now we have another disappointing young Talent who is extremely exciting heading into the season as Pittsburgh’s Jack swinsky managed to throw up some pretty impressive numbers in 2023 including 26 home runs 75 walks and a near 800 Ops sure his defense wasn’t very good but that’s a hell of a lot to build on for a 24-year-old unfortunately this would not come to pass in 2024 not only would his average slip beneath the Mendoza Line at 182 but that once impressive Ops fell more than 200 points all the way down to 588 his Advance numbers slipped his already poor defense got a bit worse and he even ended up having one of the worst overall wars in the sport at negative 1.8 reaching nearly Drury levels I do want to say the same thing here for swinsky as I said about Walker I really do hope both of them can figure it out and potentially even become stars in the future and a rivalry between St Louis and Pittsburgh that could last for years to come rounding out our fielders we have our second Miami Marlin of the list with former top prospect Nick Gordon somehow managing to have posted the lowest total value on a team that also had Anderson that’s right he actually had a worse War this came with a barely over 600 Ops an ugly 68 Ops plus and as seems to be typical for the worst players in baseball some truly atrocious defense with a negative 0.9 D war and negative -2 Fielding run value like many players in the Marlins he stands as a glaring example of what happens when you have no idea how to develop your players alongside a heap of other at this time wasted talent in Jesus Lardo Jesus Sanchez and Edward Cabrera our final position player before we get to our pitchers is going to be Nelson Velasquez whose 78 Ops plus 366 Slug and 640 Ops all left a lot to be desired from a position that is solely focused on hitting production as a DH while his total of 17 extra base hits through 64 games doesn’t look too bad on the surface it becomes a lot worse when you realize he was striking out about three times as often as he was walking and rarely getting hits outside of these as he had just 24 singles to complement those xph the lack of production from the DH spot overall ended up being a pretty massive deal for Kansas City as the year wore on and will probably be an issue going forward unless Velasquez can manage to tap into some of his impressive raw power more routinely or just gets replaced outright okay now we’re moving on to Pitchers starting with a player who’s undoubtedly one of the most talented players in this list and therefore one of its most confounding members Bobby Miller who had the lowest ER Plus among any pitcher in Major League Baseball with at least 45 Innings pitch who started started a majority of their games at just 46 along with the worst ra overall at a ridiculous 852 that’s right he gave out more runs in 56 Innings than he registered in strikeouts he also posted the second worst home runs per nine at 2.7 the second worst walk rate at 4.8 all while allowing almost two base runners per inning for a guy who can literally throw 100 mph with an at times devastating change up and above average slider this just hurts your head to look at and while he’s only 25 years old as of today one has to wonder what kind of bounceback is even possible from a season like this one that wasn’t even marred by any major injuries tywon Walker would have to be my choice here for starting pitcher number two while Keaton Miller had the second worst ra among the batch of guys I laid out in the previous section his fif was over two full runs lower than either Miller Walker or our third choice here but we’ll get to in a second Taiwan also managed to somehow rival Miller’s whip at 1.72 while giving up a ridiculous 11.5 hits per nine and 2.1 home runs per nine and all of this from a fairly pricey free agent signing who was meant to help add some stability to the Philly rotation a role that he managed to fill decently in 2023 unlike Miller he was significantly injured for parts of last season so perhaps a comeback could be on the horizon but with overall diminished stuff last year that only resulted in 6.2 strikeouts per nine it still seems to be an open question if that’s at all a realistic possibility our third player also had an RA lower than win but with pretty much every other number being way worse than him I’m talking about Rocky’s pitcher Ty black who while he might have posted the highest e plus we’re going to look at today at 67 probably posted overall the most unimpressive numbers as unlike Miller or Walker he could even manage to break five strikeouts per nine while giving up a ridiculous 13 hits per nine he struggled in Kors field for a couple years now but it was never quite as bad as this as his nearly 1.7 whip two strikeout to walk ratio and 694 ra all represented career worth totals as you’d probably guess being as how the Lefty is now 34 years old it seems unlikely that he’ll last even another partial season of the big leagues if he doesn’t manage to improve his overall level of stuff over this off season our first of two middle relievers was a kind of starter SL Bullpen guy a pitcher who managed to start seven games while peering in nine others throwing 49 Innings along the way Louis varland in those nearly 50 frames varland managed to give up 12 hits per nine while posting a 761 ra somehow only marginally better than Miller with a comparable Whip and home run total given up the difference between him and a few of these guys is obviously the fact he was able to strike out almost one batter per inning as well meaning that there is something in this arm that has at times gotten into the upper 90s even if basically almost none of that ended up coming across in his final numbers in 2024 our second reliever was more of a pure Bullpen guy Scott McGuff in 26 games with the Dbacks last year spanning a little over 30 Innings McGuff posted a nearly identical ra to varland at 744 however he did it in a fundamentally different way where Arin was getting hit around like a whack-a-mole machine at dve and Busters Scott was walking batters like they were his dog on a Sunday morning at a rate of 5.8 per9 did he at least offset that with a great strikeout rate not the slightest only doing marginally better than this Mark at a nice rate of 6.9 this is another classic tale of a mid-30s pitcher with mediocre stuff in hitters ballpark though I got to be honest that 57 ra plus definitely points to more of a lack of performance than bad luck in Chase Field rounding out our list we have our closer now in order to even qualify for this role I wanted a pitcher to have saved at at least 15 games so we can at least convincingly call them a closer as well as our other standards of them having played a third of the Season Etc it’s with those filters being applied were left with three major options Greg Kimbrell David Bednar and Cameo dval all three had ra pluses under 80 and eras around five but the guy who was probably overall the least impressive out of these options was David Bednar where Kimbrell and doval both managed to excel in strikeout rate with both of them being around 12 per9 bedar sat at an unimpressive for a closer Mark of just 9.1 this came with the worst whip FIP and ra of the bunch as well for a guy who’s just 29 about to turn 30 this was a bit baffling especially coming off of three straight Seasons with an RA south of 2.7 and K rates around 11 per9 the stuff still seems to be roughly the same as during his Heyday so hopefully he can get back on track come 2025 all right that was the worst player at every MLB position comment below if you think I got anybody wrong or didn’t include somebody that should have been in this video as well as letting me know who you would like to see in a video that’s the opposite of this the best player at every MLB position which should be coming in the next few weeks
