[Music] hello there’s probably music there I don’t know hi YouTube how are you so I decided since I’m only doing holiday movie reviews on the podcast this month that I still wanted a space to talk about some other news and notes that come up and um you know Pat isn’t this what the patreon’s for yeah but some of my patrons don’t care about sports and so I decided let’s put it out for the public and let them figure it out you can fight over it or not you could just skip it it doesn’t matter to me so so here we go so uh today is December 9th it’s Monday and baseball’s winter meetings are underway this is when all the GMS and donors and whoevers get together and talk about deals and whatnots and uh changes that could be coming and things of that nature and so generally what will happen is the big name players will sign or they will at least have like more aggressive conversations about signing at the winter meetings and so I have to say that it was nice you could see it on the screen what the deal is and if you follow Sports then you probably know or if you follow baseball you probably know the news already that Juan stto the biggest free agent on the market is off the board he chose the New York Mets and uh you know you know what I got to say we’ll get into the contract in a second what I got to say I’m going to shout out Juan stto and Scott Boris his agent for making this deal happen before the winter meetings because now like every team there were a couple teams that were in on Wan sto the Yankees were in the Dodgers were likely in the Red Sox were in there were probably a couple other M the Blue Jays I believe were also in um and so there were teams that were waiting for like not every team was realistically in on one Soto but when you have a big name like this the teams that are bidding on him will have to wait to address other needs until he signs somewhere so if you say hey if you’re the Blue Jays and you say okay we’re looking at Wan stto but we also need a pitcher or whoever you got to wait five weeks for him to make a decision and he doesn’t pick you well the pitchers that you wanted may already have signed somewhere else and so I got to say bravo bravo to wano and his people for doing this before the winter meetings and uh not making other teams worry about it because now it’s like oh crap we didn’t get one sto but we still have a couple months to get our ducks in a row and get the guys we want and go after those guys so now we can pivot and prioritize the people who won’t cost us $765 million and and we’re going to be okay hopefully so that’s the goal so I like that this is like now this is going to start the domino effect as they say and now the the biggest name’s off the board so you could say Okay whether or not you had a a realistic chance of getting him now that Pursuit is over and now you can turn to I don’t know Rory Sasaki from um what’s the Japanese team called I don’t know but he got posted so the uh the window to speak with him to negotiate with him actually it’s tomorrow it runs from tomorrow through January 23rd so good luck everybody else whoever’s going to get him is going to handle that um so yeah Juan stto chooses the Mets instead of the Yankees he is it’s a 15-year deal $765 million that is an insane amount of money let’s be real that is crazy but the Met owner Steve Cohen um he has said maybe he hasn’t said this outright but he definitely has more money to burn than a lot of other people do in the space and he’s like yep I’m going to use it so the deal includes a $75 million signing bonus no deferred money and there are opt outs available for Wan sto after year five I don’t know if they’re team if they’re Mutual or if that’s a player option but after year five if wodo decides hey it hasn’t gone how I like you know if they haven’t won a title or two or three or however many uh wano and his people deem acceptable for the money or maybe he just decided you know I mean of course everybody wants to win he’s already won but you know you want to win more right you want to win more like I won an award at work I would to win more it’d be great but um mine doesn’t come with a massive race but anyway but maybe he just decided hey I want to put down roots and we’re going to stay in New York I like to playing here let’s uh let’s figure this out I know the division he came up with the Nationals so who knows I don’t know it should be good though I mean okay for the Mets it’s good because now you put him he is one of the best hitters in baseball he get this guy’s going to get on Bas when I say that I don’t mean that he’s going to hit 340 and uh you know and match 70 home runs or whatever that’s a crazy stat line but I read the other day that since he came into the league and came into the league in 2019 he leads the league in on base percentage I think that’s what it was and he’s also led the league in walks three years in a row well no 21 22 and 23 so the guy’s going to get on base he’s a guy you want in your lineup his defense is uh let’s call it suspect at best and but look when a guy can get on base and get enough big hits as Juan sto does and can then you can Overlook shoty defense in the Outfield it kind of I don’t want to say it doesn’t matter but it doesn’t matter as much right like you’re going to overlook that he can’t really play the right field play The Outfield because he can get on base and he can set the table and he can help your team win games despite being a not so good Defender so you’re going to take that you’re you’re going to take that do I think that uh I don’t want to say half a player because he’s not a strictly a DH but do I think that a guy like that’s worth 765 probably not but it’s not my money and I was talking to a buddy the other day um actually yesterday when this was going down and he said it feels like MLB skipped from $300 million deals to seven and he’s like where did four five and six go and I looked it up in an mlb.com piece from December 7th said the top 10 uh richest free agent deals and this doesn’t include when Mike Trout signed his extension for 425 whatever it was and it’s the number one is well as of again as of the seventh was sh Otani 700 million and number two was Aaron judge 360 so they literally did go from 300 million 300 plus million doll deals to seven so they just blew right past four five and six and went to seven and now like you’re not going to go lower like Juan sto wasn’t going to sign for less than Sho Otani even though you know we can argue if you want Shi versus Juan sto um what who is better who you’d rather have whatever we can have that argument there was no way Scott Boris was going to let his guy be lower than the last guy that’s just not the way Scott Boris operates right you’re going to get the most money then I’m going to get the most money it’s going to be great so there was no like once Shi signed that $700 million the 4 five and six for the Marquee guys was gone it’s going to be seven or it’s not going to happen and so yeah it’s crazy 765 is a crazy number and 15 years for a deal is a crazy contract um yeah my son will be graduating from high school by the time that Deal’s over so yeah that’s uh just put that into perspective but but ju again Juan sto could opt out after five years so say he spends five years with the Mets he’s 31 at that time at the end of the five years he can opt out and be a free agent again at 31 years old and potentially get an even bigger deal at that time do you think here’s the question that I have if like say Okay run with this scenario say the Mets win a World Series in the next five years just pick one whichever year pick one and Juan stto decides okay that was fun I wonder if I can go Inn somewhere else I’ve been having fun but I wonder if I could bring somebody else a championship and five years go by and he goes you know what he calls Scott Boris he calls the Mets and he says you know what guys I’m gonna opt out of my contract do you think Juan SoDo World Series champion in the last within the last uh during the deal let’s say that within the last five years during the deal won a World Series so the investment paid off at least in that regard uh for the team anyway and he goes he’s like hey you know what I want to go uh I’m gonna opt out Juan stto 31 years old let’s just assume he keeps up his production maybe gets even better between from 26 to 31 you know puts up more numbers do you think he gets the billion dollar contract because it’s coming the billion dollar deal for a player is coming it’s gonna happen it’s not a matter of if it’s a matter of when do you think Juan SoDo is that guy say he opts out after five years sorry Mets fans for this hypothetical but in this again in this hypothetical you won a World you’re team won a World Series at least one so there you go you’re welcome God bless you woto whatever do you think if he opts out after five years let’s assume he doesn’t get hurt he doesn’t really drop off in production he stays about the same or better or you know a little regression here and there but generally the same player do you think Juan SoDo Juan Soo I don’t know why I said it that way gets the billion dollar deal or is it somebody else is it somebody we don’t know yet is it Sho Otani again somehow not again but is it sh Otani somehow that’s what I just thought of while I was thinking about while I was talking about this does Juan sto opt out after five years whether or not the Mets win the World Series how about that CU if they don’t then he’s like I don’t know but if they do then he’s like well let’s go win somewhere else which could be fun and so do we do the wo the Jesus do we do the woto bidding war all over again in 5 years who knows time will tell as a Phillies fan I’m uh I’m a little bummed out that I got to see this guy in the division again but uh you know good for you Mets fans and uh good for you Juan stto more money than I could ever fathom in my life I just I like you could give me that $75 million signing bonus and you’d never hear from me again like if somebody said hey hey sign this I give you $75 million and I guess it would depend what it is but you give me 75 million you you may never see me again I’ll just I’ll be cool like hey look man I can pay all my stuff I can go buy a house and we’ll be good everything will be handled and I’ll be fine but 765 million that is hey man good for you take advantage your sport does not have a salary cap good for you get all the money you can while you still can and hope nothing bad happens so there you go so one sto to the Mets 15 years $765 million no deferred money opt out after 5 years 75 million smackaroos just to sign your name there you go I wish somebody give me money to sign my name be great so there you have it little uh little more than I was expecting but uh there you go little bonus segment for you today little appetizer for you some MLB news and notes well one MLB news and note for uh on the woto deal since I will not be talking about about it on the podcast proper so there you go with that and the Baseball Hall of Fame ballot voting is in about a month right or no voting’s already happening and it’s going to be revealed in like a month so we’ll probably get to that on the show at some point um or I’ll come back here how’s that sound good good all right break we’re good we’re gonna go do a thing and then um yeah this week on the podcast we’re reviewing the movie on Netflix hot Frosty very excited but there you go speaking of hot frosties you shouldn’t have a hot Frosty from Wendy’s that that just sounds that sounds like coffee I guess I don’t know anyway that’s all I’ll talk to you soon Wan sto is on the Mets h h ah good for him I’ll talk to you later we’ll crap open a cold one [Music] oh [Music]
