opening statement from coach and then we’ll take questions please let me know I’ll you thank um first off I want to just really thank Neel and Notre Dame like this game was easier to schedule than you would think uh meaning that I think our relationship and also just our our shared sort of Vision on what is good for basketball um it was it happened really fast and I said it needs to be at our place first just given the rest of our schedule she said okay we’ll go that back there next year um I just I think that needs to be said in this in this um time of games in neutral sites that everyone wants for TV and for money and things like that she was really quick to say let’s get this done and I appreciate that and they came out and they were ready you know they’ve dealt with injuries um she’s done a tremendous job and credit them uh you I just told the team in there you don’t schedule this game because you think anything’s going to be you know a 40-point win you schedule it because you you know have an opportunity to have a great crowd and play well and give yourself an early season signature win or you get exposed and I would have chosen you know option one if that was you know my decision to make but given the fact that it’s option two our only choice is to be exposed stay together and get better um you know we we we we had some intent with our game plan early on um they’re never going to make it easy they’re good um I thought we let them get going in transition in that first quarter I thought we clawed and fought our way back even though I’d never felt like we were really clicking in that first half and I felt like the fact that we didn’t win the second quarter by more when we had like if it we’d gone into the locker room down three versus down seven you know I just thought we could never rest control from them um and and then just disappointed kind of in the fourth um that we didn’t you know compete the way that we want to compete to keep this a game and gives ourselves a shot at the end but you know I I I’m I’m rocking every single day and twice on Sunday with the women in our locker room um when it’s hard it gets harder for everyone to block everything out and stick together but that is what we will do um and we knew this is unprecedented terms of expectations and so bring it on like we’ve got to get better uh no matter what the outside world says and and this is what this game will do for us and uh that’s the direction that we’ll go yeah um I just think this is a learning experience for the whole team um so much to learn as far as chemistry and everything so I think for me the biggest thing is just staying poised and under control of the whole game uh wasn’t the Prett is for me uh so just continuing to you know lock in what do you think the defense did to kind of make you guys uncomfortable there to start the game yeah I mean they’re a great defensive team um just Relentless so uh it was definitely an adjustment and you know yeah so we just have to learn to take care of the ball better a what can you say about this for me oh yeah um yeah she great player um great team so you know uh yeah just a good player I would say I think they did their jobs like they they they put length on Juju with Citron and prosper and then they sent Hannah running around you know like the sort of disruptor that she is and so I I do think that doesn’t work if the initial Defender doesn’t do their job um so I thought you know they put they tried to make JuJu’s life hard by putting length on her and then it it works together as a system but citron’s always been a you know a scoring threat um and I think they use her you know defensively to kind of be that that glue and then that lets Hannah do what Hannah does yeah I mean everyone always say it’s a guards game um they’re very Dynamic um you know the number one thing is you got to try and keep them out of transition uh because it’s hard to game plan for transition um you know they’re they’re both a threat uh you know where do you put your perimeter Defenders where do you you know what do you do with the bigs do you try and keep them off of easy things and I thought um you know you feel like you’re doing a decent job on Miles and she goes crazy in the second half right or then you think you’re making them take a tough shot um and then you know Hannah gets out in transition so it’s difficult it’s difficult to have two Dynamic guards out there but um you know I I still think it’ll make us better and um and we’ll do even better next time but they’re obviously a really good team for a reason and um you know credit to them for coming out here ready to go I mean shoot be a lot better be more disciplined um try to figure out how to play fast and be aggressive which should be a strength of ours but how to execute when it’s time to execute or how to not play into a team’s hands that has a defensive identity like that I mean you know the two games you’re referring to are Miss and Notre Dame who both have you know defensive um you know problems they face they they cause you um but we got to do a better job knowing that that’s coming and being better and again this is a a marathon not a Sprint or as TV has said before it’s a it’s a marathon but a series of Sprints all at once right it’s not like we’re like oh let’s just you know hope we can get better you know later so we got to speed up and get better but we’re not going to find that out unless we’re playing teams that can turn us over so here we areen two just how Bend infor teams yeah playing each otherly yeah yeah I’ll address Kennedy first I mean I I just to me injuries are just the worst I mean it’s just the hardest worst part of this world that we live in of at ICS and coaching I hate injuries um you know that that being said they’re part of it they’re part of it and um Kennedy has been incredibly important to us I think I’ve said this before she’s the best incoming freshman defensively that I’ve had in my career um and she is a big part of the things that we do and we’re thankful that she will be back this season I know it you know just sort of brok her not to be able to be out there today that said everyone deals with it and you know it will be an opportunity for other players on our team to step up and us really develop the depth that will make us good long term and if we can turn that into positive that’s what it will be um for the whole you know La being the center of women’s basketball Universe this weekend is really special um you know I I think from my beginning time in in women’s college basketball and especially when I was in the Pack 12 at Cal everyone always knew you know how how great USC and UCLA are as destinations right and as places but it was always yeah does La care about women’s basketball and I think we’re proving that you know look at this building right the sellout the the star power that’s here the the the regular people who come just to watch great basketball it’s it’s it’s really I think an important thing and and again credit to the opposing teams that are willing to come out here and do home in homes but this is this is a great weekend um for the sport in LA and we’re glad to be part of it we’re just disappointed you know we didn’t hold up our end for our home fans Tyler you mentioned beginning confence Point points and what for you those little differences might not seem a lot in the moment as they kind of up what do you feel like is yeah I mean first I’ll say I never felt like we were playing great you know so I I I I wanted to kind of and and I thought the the team was fighting right we got out in transition a couple times like but I think just from a mental standpoint you know to go in the locker room and say like we haven’t been good at this this and this but you know we’re right here um is a little bit easier you know when it’s three versus seven and I thought we battled you know in that third quarter but it’s still a seven-point deficit going in instead of three so um it it scores and stops scores and stops I mean it’s it’s making a big shot I mean we’re not and we know this like we’re not going to get where we want to go if we’re shooting you know 8% from three right but it’s also getting to the right shots and finding a rhythm making your own breaks getting stops when it’s not going well for you cuz I do think we had a different level of aggression and transition in the second half you you know we got juju going we got Kiki going a little bit but at that point right they’re here too and they’re a really good team too so if you if you can’t kind of string together stops and scores it’s harder um especially when you’re playing from behind so when you get over that hump maybe it defeats them a little bit so it just didn’t happen at the end of that first half henar yeah a couple things I mean we knew with Kennedy out um you know the the the young players we have coming off the bench or now Heckle starting and Avery and and Mia who’s still only sophomore would get more opportunities the first thing is I mean Avery was in a little bit of foul trouble right she picked up two quick fouls and not that I wouldn’t played her with some foul trouble but that was a factor um also uh I mean they play two point guards right with with Hidalgo and miles and so limiting them in transition uh Malia just does a really good job on the ball it’s not an Avery negative thing it’s a Malia a positive thing um and then quite honestly we didn’t go small like there’s more minutes for our big guards like Avery when we take either Kiki or rehea out I thought rehea did a really good job um protecting the paint um you know she had four blocks she kind of anchors the defense and so um there was just sort of less minutes for the for guard lineup um but it was a little bit of that as well more more about rotations and stuff than anything else yeah I think obviously it was a great opportunity um and to be on national TV in a ranked matchup like that early in the season um and to sell gayin out um obviously great things which we would have um taken advantage of it more um but obviously women’s basketball is on the r it was um great to have that game early in the season yeah I agree LT LT you know I was just thinking as I was looking at the upcoming for the big team we so used to playing pack teams twice a year and everything but now this is a brand new team never yeah you know staff has talked about that U having been in the Pack 12 for so long you know what people are going to do out of timeouts you know what they’re going to do when you’re down when you’re up you just know the personalities of the coaches better and you played everyone pretty much twice now we play everyone once except UCLA so we better get ready you know each one’s going to feel like a tournament game we don’t get a je over and say oh we’ll get them back at home and we’ll watch the Scout and we’ll see we need to bring what we’re doing you know in that one opportunity um and get ourselves ready but that’s an interesting unique challenge I don’t think our players you know when they face up against someone you know at Nebraska or or or at Michigan State are necessarily looking at someone that they played against since they were in ninth grade like we have in the Pack 12 so Personnel Scouts are a little bit new it’s new and fresh and at the same time no one’s as familiar with us either um but it’s just something that makes for a unique a unique um season in that sense yeah I mean I I look at the box score all the time um kind of hard to take my eyes off of it just seeing how um you know how many mistakes we made in in areas we could improve on so um yeah it’s just like I said great thing to learn off of last won’t show on the but Kay came in and showed a lot of effort instantly what can you say about someone who’s not usually starting coming and showing that of effort yeah I mean we signed her for a reason we believe in her she has really unique talents she’s so fast um you she’s a competitor uh difficult situation to be in and have your first start be against you know the Irish with this back court but we you know we have a ton of confidence in her this will be good you know for her going forward and good for us going forward and you know just got to be ready with various matchups you know that come and like we said you know with with what Kennedy brings no one is really her but everyone brings their own unique thing and we got to figure out how to you know get the best out of our talent while Ken is out and keep getting everyone else better um you the sport at times it just seems the ball kind of stuck in the half court situations how can you guys improve on that as the season goes on yeah I mean that’s on me we have to get better with it um we’ve seen every type of game plan so we want to play fast in transition before the game plan sets up but we have to be better executing we just do we have to be you know know what the what the play is um commit to running that play and then make reads off of it because you know we running a set and all of a sudden you know Hannah’s jumping the ball well you’re not going to run the set through but you got to be in the right spot so you know what the next right read is and that’s a growth and a learning you know thing for us um you know we don’t have small goals we have big goals and so wherever it is that we want to go we’re not going to get there just by you know scoring in transition and and being a team that that doesn’t get to what we want in the half court and we have to do better with that we have to have better communication on the floor I have to demand that of them better and and and and you’ll see Improvement there um I I I’m certain of that thanks everyone
