πŸ“ Video Description:

The UVA Basketball team hosts NC State on New Year’s Eve in the ACC home opener for the β€˜Hoos, with a lot on the line, including, apparently, the job prospects of interim head coach Ron Sanchez.

I’m overstating that, as I discuss in this podcast – the writing is on the wall as far as the coaching search is concerned.

We go into that, and also get into the weeds on the odd story coming out of Tallahassee regarding a suit filed against FSU Basketball coach Leonard Hamilton over NIL payments.

welcome to Street knowledge with Chris Graham what UVA basketball fans need to know about NC State Chris Graham here austa Free Press now remember back all Isaac mcely had to do few months ago was make one free throw one free throw and that NC State final four run would never have happened Kevin Keats is probably done as the coach down there in Raleigh instead Tony Bennett who was the front end of a one in one from the 85% foul shooter away from being in another ACC tournament championship game he’s the one who’s won and done and Kevin Keats is extended through 20130 it’s funny how things work out now Keats is leading his NC State team 8-4 1-0 in the ACC uh into an oddly time Tuesday at noon ACC home opener for Virginia seriously who over there agrees to this stuff these nonsense time and schedule things from the ACC and ESP into DAV O Brown and cor Alexander will be on the call for the matchup of the number 102 and number 103 teams in the ne seems a little bit like Overkill to have your a team there you could have gotten away with having some schlub like me back when I worked at ESPN plus and they gave me a couple hundred bucks to do a game um looking at the forecast for this one uh I I consult generally with five uh algorithm services I don’t like the to look at Vegas Vegas’s money and people could influence that uh three have NC State winning this game Evan Maya ESPN’s BPI and Hasam metrics I’ll have NC State winning this one by one Ken pal has Virginia winning this one by one and Bart torvi has Virginia winning by three so tight game and the score range is you know right around 60 either side of um I think that’s generous we’ll talk more about that in a couple minutes getting to know NC State uh even Kevin Keats is still trying to get to know his team they’re n and not say nine and four they’re eight and four already gave the record overall so through 12 games he’s still trying to figure it out three transfers and a freshman in his rotation his leading scor is a guy named Marcus Hill a 64 senior who was at Bowling Green last year he was a Jo All-American for a couple of years uh he’s averaging 12.6 a game 50.5% from the field just 23.5% from three the other double guy for this NC State team is a 64 senior Jaden Taylor now he’s a hold over just like the third leading scorer 610 senior Ben Middlebrooks um they both played at State last year but they had transferred in before last season Taylor played two years at Butler middle Brooks played two years at Clemson um middle Brooks you might remember was a tough matchup in that ACC tournament semi-final last year he had 12 points and six rebounds and 20 minutes off the bench and the GU he’s really good at uh the being on the back end of pick and rolls so got to watch out for that given that um you can assume that Kevin Keat is going to use a lot of pick and rolls with him in the game got to be able to defend that dant Styles a 66 senior transferred in from Georgetown after two years at North Carolina didn’t play much in Carolina average double digits at Georgetown last year averaging just under 10 points a game at NC State so far this season shooting 45% from the field 35.6% from three he’s a 66 senior so this is an old team as you can tell with all the seniors I keep talking about um that’s the fourth so far in this lineup another one is uh so the fifth one will be another ACC transfer Brandon Huntley Hatfield n points 5.3 rebounds a game 53.3% from the field he’s a 610 senior he was at Louisville for two years Tennessee for one Michael oconnell another senior a fifth year senior uh he’s the guy who hit the three banked it in at the buzzer last year to send the game to OT that allowed state to eventually pull away and win that game in OT 6.5 points for assist the game uh he’s a second-year guide state three years of Stanford so uh all those guys are uh guys who have you know been elsewhere um before getting to NC State uh in some cases for a while uh how the teams match up Keats goes with a four guard lineup I looked at Ken pal which gives you a lineup analysis for their last five games uh 36 the 40 minutes per game uh Keats will go with um either middle Brooks or hunt Hatfield at Center as the five and then at four he’ll use Styles or Dennis Parker Jr both 66 guys as as basically guards at the four spot uh this uh you know I think is going to force the hand a little bit of Eva head coach Ron Sanchez he’ll go with Jacob Kofi who is more of a four than he is a three uh he’s basically a forward instead of a guard but kofi’s got guard skills um he’s 69 a freshman averaging 8.3 points 6.2 rebounds a game um kofi’s going to have to avoid foul trouble he’s averaging 4.0 fouls for 40 minutes we saw him foul out of the game was that the the um uh was it the Memphis game that he fouled out of uh here not too long ago uh so it’s going to be important for Kofi to be able to just stay on the floor uh to be able to defend I see Blake Buchanan who averages 5.7 points 5.1 rebounds 611 sophomore getting minutes opposite middle Brooks in the post um middle Brooks again on as a guy who’s really good at you know setting those High screens rolling into the basket he’s got good lateral quickness you canot see him matching up pretty well with with him one that um I see aoga Saunders for Virginia 11.3 points 5.3 rebounds a game uh getting minutes at the five opposite Huntley Hatfield and then at the four when Kofi needs a break um but that he might be he might have some matchup problems guarding Co he being saers might have matchup problems guarding the the the you know couple inches shorter and quicker guards at the four spot for NC State so that’s going to be something to keep an eye on defense in the paint is going to be a a need to be a focal point for Eva tomorrow um NC state ranks in the top 10% nationally and points in the paint 36.5 points per game in the paint and over their last five games the pack is shooting 57.0% in the paint um the magic number there uh St has averaged 16 makes in the paint over its last five games so we be keeping an eye on that during the game I do a live game cover Rich uh post on Augusta freepress.com um I’ll try to update that and I will update that throughout the game every 4 minutes at the timeouts four 4ish minutes at the at the media timeouts so we’ll be we’ll be keeping a close eye on that one uh this is not a good perimeter team the State team 32.0% from three ranks 271st nationally so that’s bottom 25% nationally um another focal point for UVA will need to be on transition D the pack average is 17.9 fast break points per game that’s in the top 1% nationally that’s about as good as you can get um Sanchez thus is going to want to limit easy buckets in transition limit dble penetration in the half court double the ball the hands of The Bigs and make state check up threes that’s pretty much Tony Bennett basketball um the issue is going to be can Virginia score enough points you know I I’ve analyzed the heck out of that for last several weeks um definitely have questions as far as that goes I mentioned the computers have this game being in the upper 50s or low to mid-60s I think that’s ambitious um so again check out tomorrow I’ll have live coverage of this uh with you know with an eye towards sort of the preview I’ve given you here and how things are playing out according to the game plan that I kind of laid out for you here um that’ll be on Augusta freepress.com check it out during the game we’ll have postgame as well uh and uh we’ll have the comments from Ron Sanchez and players Etc our first dive into the pool of guys who could be the next head basketball coach at the University of Virginia Chris Graham Augusta Free Press so uh you know you may have read the column I wrote this weekend you may not have um you should have you should still go back and read it we’ll go over it here the feeling around UVA basketball before the season was that the interim coach Ron Sanchez would need to get the team into the NCA tournament to put himself in position to secure the job on a full-time basis based on the preseason prognostications it looked like you know the the feeling was he was going to be able to do that but with Virginia sitting at 7 and5 here at the end of the Christmas break the writing is on the wall on that point now and the word is circulating about an organized behind the scenes effort in involving a group of Heavy Hitters working to identify the next head coach I know who they are I’m not going to tell you who they are I I know that this is a group of people that you just it’s like a dream team of people who are working to put this together um the candidates I’m about to present to you are candidates that were presented to me um I think I may have added one name to the list I won’t even tell you who that is just to preserve the uh sanctity of the process but uh no this is uh this is something that is is very much uh uh an ad hoc effort but also an unsanctioned sanction effort maybe I can say that um at least one of the names being vetted I’m kind of hting to you here some things is an obvious reach others are interesting in terms of being diamonds in a rough all Tony Bennett back when he was at Washington State uh and was on practically nobody’s raidar when he got the job back in 2009 so without further Ado here we go here is the courtesy candidate first to start with Richie McKay at Liberty uh you can guess who is uh the seeking the courtesy of Richie being on the list McKay 59 is on the list because he served as Tony Bennett as top assistant for six seasons before going back to Liberty in 2015 uh Liberty symbl to an 18 and 14 record last year which broke a string of seven straight 20 plus win seasons which included a 29-7 record in 2018 2019 and a 30 and4 Mark in 2019 2020 unfortunately that the year that was cut short by the co pandemic ending That season before the NCAA tournament we like to have seen what that team could have done now the advantages for Richie McKay he’s intimately familiar with the culture at UVA particularly he’s familiar with the challenges of recruiting uh to UVA um his age would be one drawback he’s 59 years old uh if you’re thinking about building you know longterm that that would be a drawback I didn’t write this in a column but another drawback would be the similarity in play and there’s there’s a feeling that we kind of just need to get away from the Tony Bennett Style no offense to Bennett they won a lot of games but the the style itself seems to kind of played itself out at the power four level uh in terms of you know it needs uh guys to be a part of a program for three to four years to be able to learn the intricate offense the packline defense um and in this St age with the transfer portal nil it’s just hard to have guys around that long you almost you’re changing your roster year to year um another draw back would be he’s been away from the ACC for a decade now and it’s not like he’s had a lot of chance to learn how to deal with life in this Cutthroat nil transfer portal era down at the Conference USA level so that would be a drawback there now here is the reach candidate and I want to emphasize to you this is not the guy that I’m throwing in the list no this was given to me um as being someone that the search committee very much thinks is a possibility and it’s Matt payter at Purdue okay then I didn’t come up with this one I’m want to emphasize and I don’t see this one happening at all painter Purdue 54 is a Purdue Alum he’s been the head coach at his Al moer since 2005 so this is year 20 he’s 4555 and 207 at Purdue he’s coming off a national runnerup finish he’s pretty well paid he’s making just under $5 million this year for reference sets about he’s making about 800,000 more than Tony Bennett was set to make this year in his new contract money is going to be a hurdle though I’ve been told that it’s you know whatever Virginia needs whatever this whatever the folks decide they need they’re going to get uh so if it’s going to take five or six or seven million they’ll get it so money alone is not going to maybe be able to lure him but it’s not also not going to be an issue if that would be the issue um the rationale behind reaching out to painters agent is again this is what was explained to me um and I could kind of buy it I mean it’s an argument and the argumentative part of it but okay Purdue is forever going to be treated as a second class citizen in the Big 10 this was part of the argument and so he might have a sense that he’s done what he can do there whereas at Virginia he could build on what Bennett has done to insert the program into the conversation with Duke and UNC at the top of the ACC you know Virginia say what it is six regular season titles in the last 11 Seasons it’ll be the last 12 after this year to ACC tournament titles the 2019 national title um I like the sales pitch I just don’t know that it’s uh GNA have a chance of Landing but hey you know whatever the intriguing idea guy is Shaka smart at Marquette smart 47 formerly as we know a VCU which he led to a final four he spent some years at Texas didn’t go so well he’s making just under $3 million at Marquette per season and so he’s not going to be priced out of the market um he rather famously struggled at Texas 109 and 86 in six seasons exactly zero NCAA tournament wins there now at Marquette he’s rehabilitated the reputation he took Marquette to a sweet 16 last year he has 29 and 27 wins over the past two um the problem he had at Texas uh in addition to you know just struggling in general to win games was being perpetually second fiddle to a place with a big time football program that would not be an issue at UVA UVA plays football or power for football but football second fiddle uh with the alums with the money people Etc to the basketball program it may be hard for smart not to at least take the call from Virginia if his number were to be dialed and I expect it will be maret’s a good job he’s done a good job there but the folks in Virginia are going to be throwing the kitchen sink I mentioned money’s not an object so in terms of salary budget for staff for nil um if Shaka smart wants this job it could very well be his so um I’m thinking that this is something that needs to be looked at more there um another one that needs to be looked at more is Ryan odm at VCU now odm is his name has been out there a lot publicly a lot of folks just assume that there’s a lot there’s a lot that makes sense about this move I’ll go into that he’s 50 years old he’s getting the most external Buzz I’ll throw it out that out there external Buzz um you remember the name first because he was the coach at UNBC when UMBC pulled that shocking upset back in 2018 for some reason he hung around there for three more seasons um and they weren’t very good Seasons he you know credit to him he wanted to build on what he had done there it’s hard to do that at at that level um he did he did eventually you know work his way into another job at Utah State out in the Mountain West did a you know had a good second season there that parlayed into then VCU hiring him he’s he’s now in year two year one in the in the NIT um the other side of this that some folks know I bet a lot of folks watching this no not everybody watching this no he literally grew up in the UVA basketball program his dad Dave odm was Terry Holland’s top assistant for a long long time a lot of folks including I think Dave and Terry both think that Dave should have been the coach when Terry stepped down in 1990 uh he was not he was at Wake Forest and went to South Carolina and had good runs at both those schools um but Ryan odm was a he was a ball boy for the team I mean he he was he was round for a long long time his VCU team can be fun to watch I didn’t mention that with with Marquette obviously the uh uh Shaka smart uh you know coaches a fun style of basketball Ryan odm at VCU has his team ranked ninth in adjusted defense his 2022 2023 team in Utah State ranked 16th and adjusted offense so he can coach both sides of the floor um I’m not feeling this one but there’s a lot of there’s a lot to this there’s a lot to this one so name that I had not even thought of until it was brought up to me Bucky McMillan at sford this is the name that’s getting the most Buzz internally okay so I said externally it’s you the folks who are commenting on social media and message boards or Ryan Odum Bucky McMillan among the Insiders has got the inside track and seems like to me lots of ways McMillan is only 41 years old he’s won 20 plus in each of the past three years including a 29 and six record last year now Samford is is at the socon level so yeah it’s a small conference uh his teams play Up Tempo which would be a selling point for fans and donors I mean it’d be a selling point for me after 15 now 16 years of covering embrace the pace um the drawback is not a lot of experience at the top level uh before getting the job at Sanford in 2020 he was a high school coach for 12 Seasons down in the Birmingham Alabama area and so the light resume would make me worry this is just me but it would make me worry about his ability to hire an ACC level staff and at this level your staff is as important as Who the head coaches so that would that would concern me just a little bit there um one other name among the what am I calling this list is the Wheelhouse list of mine is Mitch Henderson from Princeton um they’re just saying the name Princeton tells you you know why there’d be some idea fit here Henderson is 49 years old he’s 241 and 126 six and 14 Seasons at Princeton a sweet 16 appearance in 2023 his last three seasons have played out to a 70 and 21 record so he’s averaging 23 wins a year over the last three years the advantage for Henderson would be experienced recruiting to and winning at an academic school um he would have to feel like that recruiting to Virginia was easy considering he’s recruiting to Ivy League um where nil is not going to be a player uh you’ve also still got to get the guy into an Ivy League school so this would he would probably feel like he’s taking the prophylactic off and put to go out do what he wants to do um I’m calling these next two guys wild cards but they’re not wild cards from the internal perspective I’m calling them wild cards more from uh what most of you would think of as wild cards these are not names that you’re familiar with I’ll go first to Drew Valentine One of the guys in the search committee is really a big fan of Drew Valentine he’s at loyala Chicago he’s only 33 years old he’s on the list because of getting a lot of push from one of the guys um despite the young age this is his 12th season as a college coach stops as an assistant at Michigan State in Oakland which is an alma moer Oakland up there in Michigan um which is a school didn’t they beat Kentucky in the tournament a couple years ago and get to the sweet I think they got through the sweet 16 um maybe it was last year yeah I just remember that name from from recent uh basketball lure uh Valentine was an assistant on the 2018 Loyola Chicago final four team that you might remember he took over his head coach in 20121 after Porter Moser the head coach who led Loyola to the final four that year he left to take the job at Oklahoma uh Valentine’s first Leola team was 25-8 uh his next team was 10 and 21 but last year rebounded at 23 and8 his teams played D ranking top 30 nationally in each of the the two Good Seasons that he’s had there um and what I’m told is he is looked at as an ace recruiter and just imagine what he would do I’m told uh at the ACC level the last name I’ll throw out I didn’t write a lot about in the column um but I going to be writing more soon Bob Richie at Ferman 41 years old LED Ferman to that first run up set of Eva in 2023 I was sitting there in Orlando right behind Kevin Harlem when he almost fell off his chair into me uh when uh the Ferman kid stole the ball half court pass it to the other firmer kid who made to three with two seconds left yeah that one um for a young guy he’s in his eth season as a D1 head coach he’s 16 168 and 71 so he’s averaging over 20 wins a year um after a run of 52 plus win seasons in six years between 2017 and 2023 Ferman was 17 and 16 last year but uh at this writing uh they’re 12- one in 2024 going into 2025 um I got a long email from a former longtime College assistant uh who is pretty familiar with the firmman program and says that uh one that Richie Bob Richie doesn’t really uh isn’t really the kind of guy who’s looking for another job he’s really happy at Ferman I’m told uh but on the other hand uh you know this assistant went into great detail which I’ll be sharing pretty soon I guess um about his coaching chops uh and after reading an email trading emails back and forth with the person who was in contact with me um I’m I’m I’m becoming a bob Richie supporter so um to a point where okay so Ferman is also a socon team both Ferman uh uh with Bob Richie as the candidate and Bucky McMillan at sford they both play at VMI just about an hour down the road where I used to do a lot of broadcasting work uh coming up uh in January and February uh Scott German and I are talking about making road trips down to watch the games cover the games and then you know be part of the post game talking with these guys just for a few minutes and getting a sense of their coaching uh philosophies of course how those particular games go and you know just kind of get a sense of what those guys are like U if Virginia’s going to be hiring somebody which they are uh it’s going to be sometime mid to late March so I mean you know clock’s ticking and uh so those are the top guys now um I’ve had some people email me some names uh one person nominated as if this was this is not my nomination list to emphasize this is a list that was handed to me by people who are actually leading the effort but um uh you know so so this isn’t something Chris came up with but anyway uh I had one person nominate to me Don Staley I had to make the point to that particular person I think Don Staley’s next job after South Carolina is not UVA men’s basketball or any men’s basketball at the college level if she’s going anywhere from South Carolina it’s probably the NBA um I had someone throw out Griff Aldrich from Longwood he’s a UVA Alum actually a UVA law Alum um I would see now and he’s someone who worked on the staff actually with Ryan Odum uh when Ryan odm was the coach of UNBC I could see a nice tag team there perhaps with uh you know if if Ryan odm got the job he could bring Griff Al along to to to be a guy on his staff alri has done a great job actually at Longwood taking him to a couple NCAA tournaments what last year was a surprise the team two or three years ago was a dominant uh Big South team you know dominant team for that for that League last year’s team came out of nowhere to win the conference tournament and get the automatic bid so anyway he’s done a great job there um so uh you know feel free to to drop names to me I’ll I’ll you know add them to my own running list we’ll probably update this list uh as the season wears on we’re only I mean as I’m recording this is December 30th so 3 months before uh we’re likely to have a new coach in place um but uh you know there’s there’s plenty of time to to vet all these candidates and uh you know whatever process basically what I’m doing is reporting on the process nothing I’m doing is going to have any sway on anybody but uh definitely want to as I learn more about the process I want to keep people up to date so any case uh uh as you’re watching this uh okay the uh youv basketball team starts ACC play on Tuesday as I’m recording this on Monday December 30th so keep up to date with uh with u with a afbs coverage of UVA basketball uh here on Augusta freepress.com according to a lawsuit the FSU basketball team threatened to boycott the Duke game last year over nil payments this is a story right here Chris graah austa repress to this group of former FSU basketball players including J Worley who was briefly at UVA um I guess this summer and this fall uh with the basketball program before leaving after Tony Bennett uh stepped down this group has filed a lawsuit against FSU basketball coach Leonard Hamilton alleging that Hamilton reneged on promised $250,000 nil payouts now here’s a quote from the lawsuit um and I’ve got a link to the lawsuit actually on Augusta freepress.com there’s a link to that on the uh the video here so here’s the quote I mean I I’ll give a lot of quotes from the suit the plaintiffs in this matter who W who were on the FSU men’s basketball roster during the 2023 2024 season were all made the same Promise by Hamilton if they committed to and remained enrolled at FSU performing for the men’s basketball team they would each receive $250,000 Hamilton promised to sum a money directly and reinforced it many times over to the plan and their family members this lawsuit was filed in Leon County uh Circuit Court down in Florida today and it gets better per the suit the group which include J included jayen Worley uh Darren Green Jr Deontay green Cameron Fletcher Josh nickelberry and Primo Spears threatened the boycott that February 17th game against Duke over the non-payment issue the suit alleges that Hamilton panicked in a team meeting where all scholarship players were present Hamilton reiterated that each player would be paid $250,000 that it would hit their accounts the following week Hamilton stated that he understood while the were frustrated and committed to fully paying each player $250,000 before the conclusion of the 2023 24 men’s basketball season none of the six as you might guess are still with the basketball program at Florida State as we know uh warley was briefly Eva before leaving in the wake of the October retirement of Tony Bennett he hit the transfer portal again he ended up at Gaga he’ll be uh red shirting this season at Gaga and going he’ll have one year of Eligibility to finish out next year 2025 2026 today’s news makes you wonder about his departure gota say that u fair or not uh Darren Green and Josh nickelberry are done their college eligibility was run out after the 2023 2024 season Deontay green transferred to South Florida he’s averaging seven points and 4.9 rebounds a game there this season uh Cameron Fletcher is at Xavier he’s not playing much uh 6.4 minutes a game averaging two points now Primo Spears uh is at UTSA and he’s putting up big numbers 2.3 points a game this season uh down there at UTSA all those guys were rotation guys for FSU last year Daron green Junior average 11.3 points a game Primo Speeders average 10.6 points per game that Florida State team you might remember got out to that 5- one start in the ACC and now it was surprising you know they struggled a little bit in the November part of their schedule got that 5 in1 start they were actually still seven and three going into the game with UVA uh in early February about a week before the Duke game as a lot of the stuff was playing up behind the scenes um the lost to UVA uh so that they Flor State lost to UVA then lost at Virginia Tech before the Duke Fiasco uh that started a that was a the beginning part of a stretch of eight losses in 12 games that turned Florida State season around in the wrong direction that Fade Out makes sense now given what was going on behind the scenes so here’s another quote from the lawsuit every player on the 2023 24 FS schans basketball team roster reli on the promises that Hamilton made when they either decided to transfer to FSU or remain enrolled at FSU to play out the season however as as heon continued many players including the plaintiffs became very frustrated by The Continuous failure to failure to perform on the Myriad promises issued by Hamilton um so uh it was February 10th that Florida State lost to Virginia February 13th the loss at Virginia Tech and then between the loss in blackburg which which was on a Wednesday night and then the loss to uh Duke at home on Saturday uh quote from the lawsuit members of the 2023 24 men’s basketball team including the plays decided to boycott an important practice leading up to a game against one of the most powerful basketball programs in history of college sports Duke so if you’re thinking the important practice it would have been the only real practice between a Wednesday night road trip game and then a Saturday home game they would have come home not practice on Thursday uh they would have practice on Friday and then so um The Players walked out of the gym according to the suit because none of them had received the $250,000 in nil money I’m I’m suppressing laughter here repeatedly promised to them by Hamilton then they decided as a group they would not participate in the game against duuk holy crap can you imagine if this had happened okay more quotes from the suit I’m just quoting the suit a lot here when Hamilton discovered the player’s plan he sat the team down in the film room where he told the players they would certainly be paid the $250,000 in nil money he had previously promised each of them and specifically stated that the money would beeded by them no later than the following week Hamilton added that he understood where the players were coming from and that he remained committed to making all the promis payments The Players Once Again RI on the promise from their head coach and played in the match up against Duke as well as all remaining games in the 2023 2024 men’s basketball season the money never came obviously because otherwise we wouldn’t be talking about this right now now there’s been no comment from leard Hamilton or FSU on this but it doesn’t take much to figure this is not going to end well for anybody involved par particularly Hamilton he’s the dean of ACC coaches now with Tony Bennett gone with Coach K gone with Rory Williams gone Jim beheim gone he’s 452 and 285 in 23 Seasons at Florida State three sweet 16s 2011 2019 2021 one Elite 8 in 2018 one ACC regular season title in 2020 so he look at listen to what I just 2018 Elite 8 2019 sweet 16 2020 ranked in the you know ranked in the top four in the country when Co shut that season down 2021 back in the sweet 16 um there for a while Florida state was at the top of the ACC here we are at the end of 2024 l l Hamilton may be soon out of a job
