okay uh happy Sunday and uh good to see the people that are here today and uh certainly looking forward to announcing that we are playing in the sunbowl against Louisville um which is I think they played in the ACC conference Championship game last year and um it’s a really good team it’s a team that you go back and you look at some of their uh eight and4 football team that had a seven-point loss against Notre Dame a seven-point loss against Miami uh you know the the they beat Clemson I think couple of field goal loss against Stanford but uh really good team beat Kentucky by 27 points and um so we know uh we’re looking forward to having a great game we want this to be a championship game for our guys I told our team today we had a banquet that we were playing the sunbow championship game and our goal is to go out there and win the championship our goal is to get fans to come we want people there um that helps our players that helps our team that helps our program uh we want to make sure that our team is excited excited uh we are excited this was not what um we had no idea what our team was going to look like in January in April and in June and for us to go out there and get to a point where we’re playing in a bowl game um that’s something that we’re very proud of we’re excited about going to the second oldest bowl game um I’ve never been to the sunbowl so there’s a new bowl game on my checklist and we are going to make it a fantastic experience for our team J this is now the third consecutive year that Washington’s played a postseason game in Texas how important is this you know you mentioned recruiting a lot how important is it to keep having that visibility down there in a state like that yeah um and then on top of that we played the Arizona staff played in the alamoo bile last year so we’ve been like I feel like we are the we’re always in Texas right now for bowl games uh yeah I think it’s obviously football in Texas you know my wife from Texas it’s Friday Night Lights she grew up with it it’s why she asked me questions about the Red Zone harder than you guys do it’s why she asked me why we didn’t convert on that third down uh you know people in Texas they love their football so for us to be able to go get football players out of there for them to know us see us see our brand see our program see our staff down there uh is a huge Advantage uh we’ll continue to use that as an advantage and um we’re we’re excited this a new area you know I think playing so now you’re talking about playing in San Antonio Houston El Paso so three different areas of theate state three different places where the University of Washington brand can be uh a focus any history with Jeff Brown or the Louisville coaching staff no I don’t know anybody uh I don’t know I don’t think I know anyone over there um I think I might have met Jeff once um but uh no experience there no he does a fantastic job uh know he does a great job coaching quarterbacks uh have seen the uh uction of his offenses over the years and um very much uh very much let’s say aware of how good of an offensive coach he is and how good of a team they have and he’s now been there two years I believe and both years his teams have been um very competitive very good and uh we’re looking forward to that challenge a couple of guys that have already announced they’re going to enter the transfer portal and I’m sure you’re expecting more how are you going to treat those players for the upcoming game and anybody you anticipating in just opting out and not playing um opting out no I don’t Envision that uh I don’t Envision people opting out and not playing this is a great opportunity this is a bowl game on New Year’s Day New Year’s Eve day so no one’s hung over yet so everybody’s tuning in it’s at noon uh eastern time I believe so or something like that noon or 1:00 1:00 maybe Eastern perfect time perfect time to play football uh everybody can watch it uh so I would expect everybody to tune in um and so no one to opt out uh I do expect people to transfer uh that’s the world we’re in and um I’ve said to the guys for the most part uh obviously situations are different it you know so I don’t want to speak as like a a rule of thumb but this bull game is to celebrate this past season entering the portal is is moving forward into next season so they could enter the portal and still play in this game the question becomes if you enter the portal and you want to start going on visits to other programs then you’ve now eliminated yourself from playing the game because we’re practicing during those visits so that’ll be every uh issue will every situation will be unique uh Jack mallister is going to play in the game uh he’ll be our punter for the game um the rest of the guys uh I I don’t Envision knowing exactly what they’re going to do just yet I’ll probably meet with some of the guys next week but uh most of the guys that entered the portal so far are probably entering with the mindset of looking to find a place to go play you’ve had four that have publicly announced how many do you think total would you guess that that are going to do this oh I don’t know I really have no I don’t even have um an idea of how many will go in the portal now how many will wait till April how many will want to be involved in competitions and see where they fall with the new players that are coming in um you know see where they land and then make their decision in the April portal I don’t think any of us know uh we need to get it fixed I know that I know we have to find a way to be better as a uh industry and how we’re handling um you know the the idea of is just constantly going and coming from a team but um I don’t know how many is taking visits one of the few things that would keep them out of a bowl game or is there any other circumstance you’ve imagine though uh academics if they’re not fulfilling their obligations in the classroom uh these final few weeks but nobody would do that because that would work against them in the portal um if they don’t follow team rules that would work against them but for the most part I don’t expect any of our players uh they’ll either go in the portal and decide that they want to mediately begin talking to other programs and visiting so therefore they won’t play in the game or they’ll go in the portal and say I want to be a part of the team I want to finish what I started I don’t need to go on visits I could handle it through zoom and um you know I want to be at the game and playing the game on the 31st those are really the two options the other side of that how hard is it to balance going out and trying to add guys while prepping for a bow game yeah just welcome to college football 2024 you know uh we have signing day three days after uh the season ended or whatever it was four days after the season ended I can’t imagine uh and I hope to imagine it but uh or to live it I should say uh preparing for the Big 10 championship game next year and also having a signing class on that Wednesday but um it seemed like the teams that played in it uh were able to sign some good players so I know that it’s possible um I think that with the portal opening up uh our goal would be to prepare for in the future cfp games and if we’re going to play in those games we got to be ready to uh start game planning right away this game’s a little bit different because we don’t play till the 31st but um yeah with the calendar the way the calendar is you’ve got to be able to sign a class you’ve got to be able to get a portal class going and you also have to be able to prepare for games it seems to me that that’s a little bit off on the calendar world but uh the argument back is the academic calendar doesn’t permit it to be any other different way which is a good argument cuz it’s true poll games aren’t the same as they were a decade ago so in youing for Louisville do you tend to make these practice periods more about yourself getting better or do you treat it like a regular game and really focus on Louisville is there more time on Louisville more time on just something you guys want to accomplish for you GL you ask that question I don’t agree I don’t like the fact that people don’t give credit to Bull games I think bull games are exactly what they were and people have decided not to make them that uh these are opportunities for players to play in a postseason game there are opportunities for players who gave a ton of Blood Sweat and Tears In Spring ball in training camp in the season during 6 AM workouts lifting all throughout November December to be able to play in a game for some reason recently we’ve decided that they’re not as important and I don’t agree I don’t think it matters if you’ve won six and you’re six and six or if you’ve won nine and you’re nine and three if you have a chance to go play in a bowl game it should be a championship mentality a championship opportunity and our goal is to go into that bowl game and win our goal is to go in that bowl game and compete at the highest level play our absolute best practiced our hardest we’ll spend two weeks preparing for Louisville we’ll spend what it would be about a week and a half getting better as a football team and we are Allin in the bull world I think that players should be rewarded for going Bulls I think coaches should be rewarded for going to Bulls I think it is a very important part of this process especially when you play a AME conference season not an eight game conference season or schedule when you have to play in the Big 10 and you play games like we did at Penn State and at Oregon and at Indiana and at Iowa and neutral sight game against our rival that for us team for our team to be there uh we’re very grateful we’re very appreciative and we’re going to live it up you already announced Deon being your starter how does will approach this does he approach it as the backup a guy who’s going to split time a guy who’s going to play how are you doing that yeah just was with Will in my office um talking about life and um talking about his future and how proud I am of him uh he is going to continue to compete he is going to continue to make the man better uh de man will start and we’ll do the same thing we did with the Reps that we did leading to Oregon where it’s about a 75 25% split the way we practice and then we’ll run about 75% of the scout team um and 25% of good on of the our starting reps and then he’s going to continue to work on all of the things that will help him as he begins to train for the NFL which is weight room speed accuracy take doing all the individual fundamentals being a part of a great nutrition program and um continue to learn the game and we will continue to rely upon will that if God forbid something happened um regarding injury or whatnot uh will is ready to walk in and play and um be the starter and help us win the game but right now it’s de man’s team and uh Deon will use this month of December to uh to really uh put his foot down anybody else ruled out besides like Russell Davis and Jayvon and all those previous guys um der Murphy Davis uh Parker and I think m i you know I guess Charlie Crowell guys that have been on long-term injury lists Quinton Moore will not play in the bowl game um so those those five that I can tell you right off the bat or um they will not be healthy enough to play in the bowl game but other than that I don’t think there’ll be anybody ruled out due injury I imagine you might have seen the rumors about everything with Steve and Bill bich over at North Carolina is there any conversations you may have had with Steve during right now no there’s no indication to me that um that I need to continue on in those conversations um but whatever happens I mean I don’t I don’t think there’ll be I’m sure there’ll be a story every time that coach bel’s name gets brought up for any job whether it’s the North Carolina job or the whatever the Chicago Bears job I guess is open or whatever it might be or any other job um and then they’ll ask whether or not his son will join him or stay here and if he joins him then we’ll have to hire a new defensive coordinator and if he stays here then we won’t have to hire a new defensive coordinator but um I I I think that they’re separate bill belich is not on our staff Steve bel’s on our staff so Bill will determine whether or not he wants to continue to coach he’s the greatest coach of all time so if he goes and coaches somewhere then he’ll make a decision and then Steve will make a decision and then we’ll figure it out from there you obviously had the Almo Bowl experience last year as head coach what did you kind of take away from that and how do you hope to kind of maybe take some of those lessons into this uh with yeah uh we played Oklahoma uh we had a huge win for our program um and uh we did that because we took the game very serious uh we it was a championship game we treated it as such uh we treated it like a playoff game or whatever you want to look at these bowl games as and um we are taking that exact same mentality we’re going to practice hard we’re going to wear full pads we’re going to grind it out we’re going to meet we’re going to watch tape and we’re also going to make it an incredible experience for the kids we’re going to celebrate going to bowl game we’re going to have parties we’re going to have we’re going to do some amazing things for the kids we’re going to include all the families and we’re going to make sure that our players understand that this is an a great accomplishment and it’s just the beginning of where we want to be thanks thank you appreciate it e
