it’s time for the hard truth Indiana basketball post game show with former hooer Todd [Music] Ling now here’s to L and from Courtside your host Jim Cole welcome everybody to the hard truth Distilling Company Indiana basketball postgame show with Todd lirry of course I’m Jim Coyle your host and glad to have you guys along here on this uh Monday evening that’s a little different Todd yeah no doubt like playing on a Monday they’ve had a weird schedule playing on the Friday and then the Monday no uh a little hard to get used to but but I I hope that they don’t make a habit out of that because I don’t I don’t love those game days no uh not fun and uh the crowd kind of what the crowd was uh okay Monday Monday Monday and an early start like those are that’s a recipe for even though it was the first Big 10 game should have been you know on paper looks like it should be hyped up but a Monday game that starts early is almost always that way you know barring maybe playing you know like a Kansas or Duke or somebody that it’s always going to be like that I was going to say if this part you know if this was Purdue or Oregon or some like that it probably would have been different but you could tell by the uh the energy level was really low in here as well uh until sometime in the second half but that was uh the game was a little I don’t want to call it I I hate to call it boring but it was a little slow paced it seemed it was it was really a two-point game and by that I don’t mean difference I mean everybody was just scoring two points at a time uh for the longest time that game was being played from eight feet and in uh no long distance shots and then did a couple and but uh it was working so I guess when uh you dance with who brought you but uh five players and double figures tonight for Indiana a very balanced scoring attack is every all these guys were within a few points of each other first and we’ll talk about Bryson Tucker and Kaden Carlile coming off the bench to provide 30 bench points which is uses Umar ballow at the free throw line uh what he end up eight of 11 that’s uh that’s pretty damn good I don’t think I’m not sure I could beat him tonight on that one for a 50% free throw shooter eight of 11 will take every day uh you know it man uh but Indiana did what they had to do they were in control of the game for uh most of the part most part of the game but Minnesota stayed close but that again it was because this was you know two points at a time so they weren’t doing anything to really stress them yeah look this is I’m not gonna I’m not going to be the polit politically correct person here and analyst with this I I’ll just tell you Minnesota’s ter terrible they’re a bad team yeah they’re awful if it weren’t for that run in the first half where both teams were scored going back and forth which was kind of fun because both teams were making some good shots and tough shots it wasn’t all bad defense some of it was bad defense but you know if it weren’t for that it would have truly I mean you could you could easily have gotten away with saying it was a boring game because it it was a boring game for the most part um but and and I’m you know I’m probably going to say it four or five more times on the show like yes it was a big 10 game um on paper that looks like it should be enough to get you excited but it’s not Minnesota’s terrible like they’re bad uh the announcers Tred to sugarcoat it and make it out like you know congratulations to Dawson Garcia for coming back for another year and the fox kid playing his 37th year in in the Big 10 and I mean it’s just they tried to make stories out of it end of the day Ben Johnson’s a great dude I I’ve heard interviews with him awesome Dude Looks Like like a fun guy you’d want to play for but their team’s terrible they have no nil money they were complaining about and it shows because they’re not any good well they they don’t have even though Indiana played a very mundane game they were able to but they were able to because they were just better than Minnesota at every position Minnesota didn’t other than Garcia who’s obviously a pretty good player but he probably looks a little bit better because he’s like a diamond in a goat’s butt man he shines uh look and he’s and he’s a he’s kind of a stretch four player and and they had no one I mean Indiana has two bigs are are you know I’ll say the the go-to players on the offensive end for Indiana and they there was just no one from Minnesota to um to defend those guy the big guys on the inside and and so look we’ve said this and and I’m not backing off of it yet like maybe I will later on but but right now I’m not backing off of it in that you can beat bad teams when you only make four three-pointers you can beat them on a pretty regular basis and that’s exactly what happened tonight if they had been playing Nebraska or Wisconsin or teams that that are going to score a lot of points and can throw in some threes Michigan they this game would not have resulted the way that it did Indiana is going to have to make more shots end of the story four three-pointers is not going to cut it they are they are not going to win against a a top 25 caliber team you are not going to win 10% of your games only making four three-pointers in 2024 college basketball no I was thinking that very thing while Indiana is you pulling away and having their way with Minnesota again it was because Minnesota didn’t have anything to throw with Indiana they had one guy yeah and when you don’t have that Talent it’s and this this conference man every day now you know I started the season saying well I don’t know who’s going to be what who’s I’ve got a pretty damn good idea I don’t know who’s going to win it but I know that there are nine probably nine teams that you don’t want to have to go play at their place for sure and that’s half the conference so when you have something that deep and you’re going to run into those kind of problems you better win these games because they’re going to be few and far uh between yeah there’s no doubt about that but I mean you’re looking at a situation and I was trying to think the other day I was having a conversation and trying to figure out who who were going to be the easy wins in the Big 10 because it seems like you know I thought Penn State wasn’t going to be very good and then I don’t know why I thought that just because I hadn’t seen their roster but when I saw how many guys that they have back that’s not going to be an easy win and and really the only team that I think is is a team you should run over is Minnesota and and you know I I hope for their sake that they are able to you know catch on to something and and jail together and make a run and play pretty well I just don’t think they they they are not skilled enough uh and that’s a terrible thing like I hate to be that way I’m not trying to be a dick about it I mean they’re just not very good and well you know what that’s that’s why we’re here to give the hard truth it’s not about the it’s hard it’s hard truth because they’re not good and that it is what it is and I I was thinking again the same thing I’m like man everyone is probably going to be happy with this but this game is scary to me if I were looking at it from a fans perspective because boy I I know what they’re going to run up against and while they won the game easily it’s how they did it and which I’m not knocking but I I’m saying basically the same thing you said that’s just not going to fly against talented teams that have got guys that are as good or better than what Indiana’s putting on the floor in a scenario where they’re running an offense where they’re trying to score and trying to put you in stressful situations other than just being bigger than you right well I mean Minnesota tonight has I mean Dawson Garcia is a very good player u a couple of their guards are pretty good players um but outside of that like they’re just not they’re not division one big time college basketball level players and and so you know I’m I’m not here to try to beat down Minnesota I’m just saying I will be I hope Indiana is able to prove me wrong but I will say you’re not going to go to mines or I’m sorry you’re not going to go to Nebraska on Friday and only make four or three-pointers and win like I’m I’m pretty confident in saying that’s not going to happen I think you would have to be hoping that Nebraska had a monumentally bad shooting performance day and I don’t this is not like the old Nebraska teams they’re not they’re not that great a shooting team they don’t have tominaga anymore like they’re they’re not as good a shooting team as they were but it’s Fred hyberg NBA Le offensive system and they’re going to be cutting and moving and Indiana is it won’t surprise me if there’s not a whole bunch of layups given up in that game because hyberg is just good at designing plays where his players are all moving all the time you’ve got to be connected defensively to stop Nebraska and this is not like an anti- Indiana thing because I’m thinking about some of these other teams Purdue Purdue is a team also that they’re going to be in trouble because they have what they’re doing right now is going to win some places but other places they don’t have the horses either uh right now it seems like or not just Purdue but there are a lot of teams to where it’s going to be about matchups in this league a lot of the time it really is a lot of teams um are going to have days when they look like a national Contender like they could possibly win a championship and they’re going to have days when they look like like like Purdue looked at Marquette they’re GNA have days where they just look like they’re not that competitive and I I we’re just singling Purdue out in that scenario but you know so far I think Michigan’s probably the surprise of the Big 10 in their consistency they were able to go in and I think they got a big win at Wisconsin was it Wisconsin they went and won on the road for Dusty May’s first big game is to win a road game like that and then they were able to come back home um I don’t remember who they played at home but they beat you know they beat somebody again at home I like they’re they’re just a surprise and a good team um but but are you really surprised yeah mean no you’re right not not I think I am a little bit I’m surprised um that they have jelled as early as they have because I’ll say that their roster is you know out mostly new players a lot like Indiana’s is Indiana actually even has more returning players than Michigan but but it Indiana and I I firmly believe this Indiana’s gonna be pretty good like I’m I’m kind of negative on him right now because they haven’t played that well but it’s what December 9th or 10th or whatever it is like we don’t need them to Peak right now like I need them to consistently get better I thought they did get better tonight I thought they were better tonight than they were last week and and against Miami and um I I think that they are getting better I think there’s some improvement I don’t think that they’re playing that well together I think the two big guys every single game we’re seeing them get a little more comfortable with each other being on the floor at the same time I thought they fed off of each other really well tonight um but again you know I I’m gonna go back negative here again for a second I’m just going to say a lot of those post feeds that we were able to make tonight when you just lob that ball up over the top and and have our guy be able to get it you’re not going to get that against teams that have a seven-foot guy in there I mean we’re doing that against a 610 guy that is not athletic at all and I don’t mean Garcia I mean the other guy that was in there and and you’re just not going to be able to get away with that against most teams so it’s just um yeah some of the things that they were doing in this game I wasn’t all that thrilled about on some of the post feeds because you know you’re not going to get away with that Derek Queen’s a great example that’s that’s a good comment Derek Queen you’re not GNA get away with that with dery Queen I mean you watched him go up against Purdue the other day uh and I mean that’s amaz what do you think he’s gonna play like when he plays against Indiana yeah but you know what it’s gonna be tough he going up against the body the size of Balo or renew um it’s going to be tough and and like it’s like you said what you said a second ago Jim is exactly right the matchups are gonna kind of dictate maybe not just who is important in the game or who has big games but defensively what you can take away from those other teams and Indiana is a tough matchup because of the two big guys um but on the flip side of it it becomes kind of difficult to defend people and if if Derrik Queen’s able to step out and make two three-pointers like he did at Purdue the other day that’s a tough guard for Indiana and so you know it’ll be interesting there I I’m just singling Derek Queen out now but you can go down the list like there’s a lot of good players on good teams that you’re not going to be able to just lob the ball up over the top of like they did uh absolutely and the three-point shooting I mean there’s not a lot you could say tonight because Indiana puts up 14 of them uh although a lot of those must have come late because boy it was a slow start to to the shooting aspect of the game they hit four of those 14 28% obviously it’s not a big part of their game and it’s not a successful part of their game for most of the time which is is going to come back to haunt them I think especially in these bigger games where they’re going to need something more than b or renew or whomever getting loose in the post uh they’re going to have to have that shooting when they play these more talented teams yeah they are you can’t be one-dimensional in today’s college basketball you can’t be just a three-point shooting team you can’t be just a pounded in the paint team you’ve got to be able to drive kick um you know I I I honestly believe you know you know imb’s satation and the next thing that he can work on and get good at is getting a shot off the dribble creating his own shot and you hear that a lot about um you hear that a lot about guys going to the NBA and that you know what they learn there is their their shot making ability and able to create their own shot and you know he’s just not able to do that at this point right now in his career so stand making standstill shots I mean he made the only three-pointer for Indiana’s starting lineup tonight he was one for three no one else uh Renu attempted two he missed them both Galloway attempted one he missed them both Balo obviously didn’t shoot one rice uh didn’t shoot one so you know it’s obviously not a focal point of the offense we all know that that’s not going to change no matter how many times you and I sit here and have this conversation that’s not going to change but you have to be capable of making it and four of them is not showing that you’re capable of making it you got to make I I I think six is the bare minimum and I think that’s you got to do a whole bunch of other things well if you only make six three-pointers in a game but and your defense better be pretty solid but you know the average team I think’s going to make seven eight nine 10 plus three-pointers and those teams are going to be hard to beat for teams that are not capable of making them some uh great some very positive things to uh talk about Bryson Tucker you have to start right there he has become one of the consistent scorers for this team and he does it in different ways he did it driving to the rim tonight he did it by some short range jumpers uh did he attempt or make a three-pointer tonight uh I don’t know why I can’t see his name I’m looking I think he did he attempted one and he missed it and that’s okay now he was one of four at the free throw line that’s not good when you have Umar balow knocking down eight of 11 yeah no Bryson Tucker was four for six from the free throw line one for four was Trey Galloway oh I’m looking at the wrong one my bad yeah yes but but I mean you’re right on all account like Bryson Tucker you can see him getting more comfortable you can see him feeling out the the program and the process and you you can see it won’t shock me if if we don’t see him break into the starting lineup maybe some a little bit although you know I don’t care about the star lineups and all that it’s who gets to play the most minutes but um you know I I will just say like I thought Bryson Tucker first half and I trying to pick on Mike Woodson so I I I’m just I’m just stating this because I noticed it I thought Bryson Tucker earned to start the second half the way he played in that first half not just because of the points that he scored but he rebounded really well he hustled on defense he Dove on the floor um I thought he earned the right to start the second half and that was one of the things that I always loved about Coach Knight in our program back then was how many times I did not start a game just using myself as an example but I played well enough in the first half I started the second half and I always took a huge amount of pride in that and I think coach Woodson it’s just his philosophy and it’s it’s kind of an NBA thing but he’s much more set in his rotations and how they rotate and and I get it there’s something to that guys knowing when they’re going to come in guys knowing who they’re going to play with they know the kind of the game situations I get it I just don’t think you have to be that hardcoree on it I thought Bryson Tucker maybe more than anyone else I’ve seen throughout this entire season so far I thought he’s a guy that earned the right to start the second half and I wish coach Woodson had rewarded him with that hey you know I never thought I would hearken back to Lil roie Archie Miller but he was that was one of his downfalls he would not alter the state lineup start a game mid half halftime it didn’t matter no and I I it doesn’t make sense because hey man if somebody’s hot you ride that hand and ride that hand and I I don’t even know why don’t even take them out of the game unless their tongues drag it I mean you go I I also like I get it I I you can see when a guy’s starting to run out of gas a little bit and I I’m I’m not saying you know run them until they make bad mistakes but I thought Tucker’s performance tonight was different and it wasn’t just the points the points were great they were important they needed them but but the way he rebound the way he cut um I really thought he earned right to be on the floor and I thought I thought that you should have rewarded him otherwise um for guys to know the lineup is that set what I mean I think foul trouble’s probably the only thing that’s going to change that lineup right now unless coach Woodson changes his philosophy a little bit um and honestly I think the more that we talk about it and say it and people ask the questions and all that the least like he is to do it like I I think that makes him less likely to pull the trigger in and make a change he doesn’t like to be told what to do I don’t think um but but I just I I really thought if it was me I would have rewarded Bryson Tucker based on his effort not he had six rebounds like I said his shots were points were coming in different ways he was rebounding the ball he was just very active and that’s another thing you didn’t see a ton of tonight some people think that the game was faster paced I guess I didn’t see it that way because at the beginning of the game it was they were going back in like Indiana a couple times um Minnesota scored in Indiana no no dribbles like inbounds pass throw aead pass and a guy was able to lay it in or a guy took a shot quickly and so um there there were some times in the first half I did think that they played faster and even with Balo Balo ran the floor one time we threw it to him on a on a fast break he beat everybody down the court so I’m not just saying it needs to be the small lineup um I I just think I think there’s I think feel better if I thought coach Woodson was more open to playing I I feel like he’s very reluctant and he doesn’t want to do it and and I’m not gonna say he’s he’s hoping that the other lineup is more successful because I I’m just being petty at that point but but right I just hope that the that they they play the lineups the way that the guys are playing well what the point that you made about riding a hot hand like that is the NBA that’s what the NBA does I mean you watch I’ve watched the Lakers before and they’ll get Austin Reeves getting hot one day and LeBron and Anthony Davis won’t take a shot for like 10 straight minutes they just keep feeding him the ball and letting him shoot because when guys get hot you ride them no matter who it is and and well I mean you played with plenty of guys who you all you had a roster of great Shooters but that didn’t mean everybody was good on a particular night and sometimes guys just get hot man it doesn’t matter why you for example at the end of that damn Duke game I mean the fact that you didn’t get that ball and Jamal got it uh I’m sure fans was still pulling to pull their hair out because you were on a heater and that’s different but uh it’s the same point but you get yeah you you get the point and you get that um you know you just hope that um that it some point in time you know the lineups end up shaking out and guys are able to recognize when someone’s hot and keep it going and feed them the ball and and and I think for the most part they do that like there was a lot of really good things I think happened tonight I’m not I think we’re sounding pretty negative mostly because we’re negative about Minnesota like they just are not very good there’s I’m not going to sugarcoat it like this is some great Victory it’s a victory you have to win you have to win this home game end of story and they did so they won it pretty convincingly so you feel good about that shooting you know 18 of 29 from the free throw line that’s not good only make it four three-pointers that’s not good defense wasn’t great especially the first half defense wasn’t great we gave up too many easy baskets but you’re gonna do that like every if I was talking after you know who just won big games like Kentucky just beat Gonzaga um you know I’m sure I could say some negative things about Kentucky in that game like they they did some things that weren’t great especially heck they were down 16 in the first half and came back in one these guys are not going to go out there and play Flawless games I understand that but we’re talking about them building and getting better and anding game by game and these are some of the things I think they need to do well there’s what uh actually what we talk about each game it’s not to be positive or negative it is to be analytical and Todd is the analyst and that’s what we do we break down and talk about what happened it’s not about being Rah raw and being cheerleaders that’s for you guys to do but Brian’s comment that he’s happy that Indiana won but that didn’t help them get into the dance could not be more accurate that’s not a win that is going to propel you into the NCAA tournament uh there yeah but it’s one it’s one that if you don’t win it’s one that if you don’t you can eliminate you from the tournament when you get down to the end of the year so yeah I um I’m not really sure what the point Brian’s making there is they they had to win they had to win this game or or it’s a you know it’s a big black mark at the end of the season oh and they think he understands that it’s just they’ve got to work on that RPI right now they’ve got to stack stack some wins and get that RPI back up there because it’s not good again a and this is you know what they went through last year at the beginning of the season when you have opportunities to beat certain teams and to beat them in a way that uh leaves no doubt tonight they kind of did that but uh well I mean they did but they won the game and they won it kind of in a way that they needed to and that’s fine the problem is they haven’t beaten anyone going to improve your RPI South Carolina’s by far the best win that they have right now right I mean would you agree with that that’s absolutely because and that’s a home that’s a home game against a team that’s likely not going to make the tournament anyway so at the end of the year right now they don’t have any victories that that that are going to bump up the RPI now they will have I’m I’m not being negative and all of a sudden you know acting like Doom and Gloom but at this point in the season they’ve had they had a couple of opportunities in Atlanta to win to get some quality wins and right now Indiana doesn’t have any quality wins thankfully they don’t have any real negative losses Lille possibly but yeah um that’s that Louisville may end up being we’ll have to no I I don’t think so I mean maybe you’re right they they might be I just I you know they’ve played some good halves against other teams they just always other teams end up winning I mean they had Duke on the ropes yesterday and Duke ends up winning by what 10 or whatever it was like that’s what should have happened in that game they should have got on a run against Indiana and had a chance and then Indiana pulled away and won that’s what good teams do her says it’s a win it is a win and they’ll have to string together a lot more of them to get where they want to come be come March that is exactly right uh you can take the positivity out of the win uh out out of Bryson Tucker’s play uh you know coming off the bench I I don’t know how much longer you keep you could keep him on the bench uh but you still you have to have someone coming off the EV that’s going to provide that spark that play he he brought the spark tonight there there wasn’t a lot of energy like I said earlier when he came in it didn’t take long he got he got to work I mean like that he was four five and had eight points just that quick and he brought the energy with him it was a noticeable difference but you need to have more than one guy that does that and you need to have somebody that does that from the start or multiple guys and I’m not saying that they’re not playing hard but it’s not playing hard it’s just uh there’s a difference between playing hard and playing with energy um and with purpose and and and all of that but man he is really really going to be a good player for Indiana a good player period he’s young he’s a freshman and he is really just coming into his own kind of on his own it seems well the one thing about it you know you and I have gone back and forth about this for years but I do not care about the starting lineup I don’t care if they move him into the starting lineup do I wish that I I love the fact that we can say we at these bench points and all that stuff what I do should happen I think he should have started the second half like I’ve the starting the game doesn’t matter but there’s a difference between starting the game and starting the second half because but everyone seems to fall into that say I shouldn’t say everyone a lot of Indiana fans and a lot of basketball fans in general when guys start stacking together good games immediately jump to why is he not in the starting lineup and maybe there are guys and I’m not saying Bryson Tucker this way I’m just I’m stating this is a fact and I think people who played this game for a long time understand there are guys who play better coming off the bench there are guys who don’t play near as well the bench and it kind of gets into your head at some point but I don’t I do not read anything into the whole who starts the game any of that I read much more into who starts the second half because I do think I think that first five minutes of the second half is probably the most important five minutes of the game and and I think the you know coach Knight used to always say the first five minutes of the game and the first five minutes of the second half and and I think because he always wanted us to get off to a good start but I I I would say in my opinion the most important five minutes is that first five minutes of the second half and you either have played a good first half and you come out and put your dominance out there again and show it’s not going to be any easier in the second half or you get a chance to turn things around and you haven’t played that well in the first half and you have a chance to get it going and use that energy you’re talking about and get going in the second half and that first five minutes is what’s really important to me that’s why I would have rather seen the hot hand on the floor I mean Trey Galloway did not play very well at all in this game he had some terrible turnovers he didn’t do a whole lot right miles rice didn’t I mean this a couple games he played pretty well in the Miami game but but he’s just not been the miles rice that I think we’re expecting in the last few games I wouldn’t have cared if either one of those guys didn’t start the second half um that doesn’t mean you have to do that the next game that doesn’t mean they have to start the next game it just means I would have rewarded the guys who played better in the first half I would have ridden my horses a little bit more than than what I think coach Woodson did yeah I I’m looking at the end of the uh first half uh with nine minutes or less to go uh and looked like Minnesota had just a little bit of a a bulge in points one two three uh five six eight and yeah they they so getting off to a great start at in that second half after they had pretty much started started to control the game uh there that’s exactly what you’re talking about and Man Tucker was the guy who was really just he didn’t need anything else he was making he was creating his own shot uh you know everybody always talks about ibako well he’s go a they need to run sets for him and do this for him and and I’m sure that there’s some truth to that but there is talking to you long enough Shooters will find a way to get open and Shooters will shoot uh Bryson Tucker is finding his opportunities to get the ball into the basket I’m gonna say this about Bryson Tucker and I’m GNA compare him to Greg Graham back from my era because I think Greg Graham I don’t think anyone would have classified Greg Graham as a shooter I think they would have classified him as a scorer and he was more much more of a mid-range guy could he make three points yes can Bryson Tucker make them yes is it his strong suit no wasn’t Greg Graham’s strong suit but he was capable but he was a scorer and he was a slasher and he could score from that mid-range and you know Ricky Callaway was another guy that that was kind of in that mid-range game guy and I think that’s where I put Bryson Tucker he’s much more comfortable and a better scorer in that mid-range and getting made a great move on an inbounds play today where he caught it um and and improvised and came down the lane and got got an easy bat wasn’t that easy but he made a nice shot in the lane um so yeah I me there’s some things that Bryson Tucker can do um that that are kind of ahead of his years and ahead of his time and that’s his strong suit he is much better I know why he scored a lot of points in high school because he could overpower a lot of people at that size and that age um you know getting in there he didn’t have to shoot the ball that well he could score in a bunch of different ways and that I I think he’s better at that than imbak is now standstill shooter mbako is one of the best in the country like I will I I’ll I’ll Stand Grant my ground on that one like he is as good as anybody as standing there knocking down shots but from you know creating your own space and scoring and and you know getting the ball on the move and scoring in the mid-range I think Bryson Tucker is better than he is at this point yeah and again I want to reash that it’s just not trying to be negative just trying to talk about the various things about this game because every we we look at the future we we look at this game and then know that hey there’s something else coming here so what’s it going to be like from this game to the next game because this game this game’s over yeah and I don’t know if you I don’t know if you can see it with your stats and stuff that you have there but but I mean if I had to guess when Bryson Tucker came into the game in the second half I bet it was after the 14 minute Mark maybe 13 minute Mark I mean maybe somewhere there I think was in before the second TV timeout but it wasn’t right away and I know he didn’t score until there was 1151 to go I can tell you that if I’m gonna guess I would say it was the the you know 13 14 minute Mark which I’m just saying like you take a what a long time 15 20 minute halftime break and then you go take you know you sit on the bench for another 15 minutes while they play that five or six minutes of game time and you there’s a half hour you haven’t done anything and that’s that for a guy that was hot and playing well I just like to seen him be able to get out there and start sweating you know to start the second half and reward guys it was always something that we we took big pride in it not just me a lot of people a lot of guys did and and and then think about it this way if you’re a guy who did start get to start the second half what about what about the guy that didn’t what is that you battle you better work harder that’s right you don’t want to lose that spot and and there’s the competition the the in inner team competition is something that that makes you really good and I I thought I thought those guys should have had to earn their spot back second half and I’ll stop saying it because I’m just beating a dead horse here I’ll stop talking about it but but I would have liked to have seen get rewarded for that first half he play absolutely and I that’s the one thing I wonder about this team is how much inner competition there is because if you know you’re starting if you know that you’re going to start to half when you come out if you know your minutes are not going to be you know clipped you’re going to play X number of minutes no matter what there’s not that doesn’t create any um anxiousness it doesn’t create uh or cause you to really work harder to say tell your talk to yourself and say hey man I gotta get with it I gotta bust my ass here I’m getting behind I’m I just turned the ball over three times or I haven’t done anything um you have to have something that pushes these guys if they’re not pushing themselves yeah I mean like let’s just look at an example like this is why I think Bryson Tucker played so well because yes he had 16 points and yes that’s awesome and obviously was extremely important but Luke good he played 19 minutes and Bryson Tucker played 20 minutes Bryson Tucker had six rebounds and an assist Luke goody had zero rebounds and an assist and and I said this before I looked at Good’s numbers on there I said this about Bryson Tucker earlier I thought the best thing that he did in the first half was rebound rebound and rebound overall and you get yourself involved in the game and that to me I felt like I don’t think I don’t think Luke goody ever got involved in the flow of the game and the best way to do that is to to take a charge get a rebound um make a good defensive play get a good assist yes obviously scoring a basket like everybody knows that’s good part but but the six rebounds from Bryson Tucker in my opinion was just important for the flow of the game as his 16 points Maybe not maybe not quite but close 16’s a lot if he had had 10 points I would have said his six rebounds was just as important as his 10 points 16 points is a lot that’s great like it’s probably not quite as important but that six rebounds was big and I thought that’s what made him get into the flow of the game and hopefully Luke goody that recognizes that and is able to come out and get himself more involved Kanan Carlile in this game had three rebounds and five assists in 22 minutes yeah he had 14 points but but I’m telling you the the three rebounds and the five assists is just as important like it’s a big deal and I thought that what those guys did in their contributions just as much as their 30 points they threw in um you know nine nine rebounds and six assists between those two guys is a great statline 21 assists on 30 made uh field goals that’s pretty damn good too when you look across the line and see that Minnesota only had 12 on a 26 mfield go so they’re uh moving moving the ball a little bit but again there’s probably going to be a lot more assists when a lot of the shot shots are coming from closer in yeah you’re throwing it in you’re you’re throwing it to a guy who’s going to shoot it there’s not as much dribbling and you know a lot of those teams that don’t average very many you saw Minnesota tonight they pound the heck out of the ball like those guards are dribbling like crazy it’s hard unless they drive and kick it’s hard to get a ton of assists because those guys dribbling and are going to shoot it at some point so um yeah the the assist number can be it’s a little skewed sometimes it can be a little weird but Indiana shared the ball pretty well tonight and and that’s that’s definitely a good sign and the next game in Nebraska Carl’s going to start the only reason he didn’t start tonight was he was coming back off of that injury and Mike said that well we we started Gallow last time so they just thought they would start him this time and ease him back in which uh maybe that helped IND theana I mean you get 30 points coming off of the bench man that’s not a lot of teams get get to do that but that’s not that’s an exception not the rule for this team because he’s going to be in the starting lineup uh most of the time and can they mix these rotations well enough to where you’re not losing this when you make those changes because that’s something we’ve seen before and uh hopefully he doesn’t get too anxious to take all those guys off at the same time and then you mentioned goody you know the last came out man he was in the flow he was knocking out shots and not only that he he was taking those Caitlyn Clark shots and that’s how good he was feeling how or I should say how goody he was feeling um but you you could just tell he was in the moment he was in Rhythm he was looking for the ball wanting the ball never saw that really tonight from him yeah and I’m telling you that’s that’s a part of it every game out is a brand new adventure it doesn’t matter what you did the game before you know the second half doesn’t matter what you did in the first half you’ve got to get yourself going in that Rhythm and and I’m telling you I learned this um I learned this really early in my career and and I appreciated it and you know I’m a guy I’m a I’m a shooter I’m like I’m known as a shooter I’m scorer like in high school I played shooting guard like that was my job on the floor but um but I learned pretty early on from somebody that to get yourself involved go get a rebound get yourself involved in the rebounding for I don’t know why I don’t know what it does but for whatever for one thing it puts the ball in your hands it does but it makes you feel like you’re connect like you’re a big part of the game like rebounding is one of the most impactful parts of a game um that you know it does get celebrated because they hear you know them talk about double doubles all the time and you know the guys that lead the nation in rebounding are always celebrated and talked about and Balo Shores that up for Indiana big time like he is a really really good rebounder um but but I mean I I learned that early on you know a good way to get yourself involved in the flow of the game is go get a couple rebounds and that I mean I’m I’m almost usually always the smallest guy on the floor but so’s Braden Smith and he’s probably their second leading rebounder if not he’s pretty darn close and and so it’s not size it’s more effort of anything in rebounding some of it size of them just go goes to the bigger guys but I I learned that early on and go get yourself involved by getting some rebounds and and I’m telling you um if this statline tonight well first of all I don’t think it would have been 16 points had he not had the six rebounds but I don’t think he would have felt near as comfortable in his play in tonight’s game I I bet he feels pretty darn good about those six rebounds and if he doesn’t I hope somebody shows them to him because I noticed it early in the game he was rebounding and and I you know I said it here sitting at the house like he’s going to have a good game because he is mentally connected in this game and he is making a concentrated effort to go get rebounds and he did and and it never really L up for him and you talk about rebounding uh between Bryson Tucker miles rice and uh Kanan carow they had 14 rebounds uh which is good on paper but also though they only had one two three four five six seven eight guys that even played all played all night so somebody had to get the rebounds but uh it’s good to see guards grabbing the board seven AP piece for the big guys about hey if we’re going to sit here and complain and say we want a smaller lineup and a faster lineup then those guards are going to have to rebound and they are and and I’m not I’m giving them credit for what they’re doing I’m not saying they’re they’re they’re not doing it but we as fans want the faster Pace well then those guys are going to have to to rebound and they did it absolutely uh let’s see miles rice didn’t have a great game from a statistical standpoint tonight two points only took four shots on the night did not put up a three attempt only one free throw attempt in which he missed um he had the five rebounds and four assists in his 21 minutes he was solid he was solid he was okay I mean Galloway was the one to me that that never got involved in the game in a good way like he had one point one rebound three assists but he had four turnovers and they were all pretty bad turnovers and that’s in 26 minutes of play I mean he only took they only take the one shot all night and he was one for four from the free throw line and so that to me is it like you can just look at that on paper the three assists he’s on the floor for 26 minutes you’re almost going to fall into one or two assists so uh you get lucky off a guy making a shot or he feeds the post a lot so that’s probably where his three assists came from and and Trey Galloway is one of my favorite players on the team so I’m not badmouthing him I’m just saying this was not anywhere near the level of play that we’re used to seeing out of Trey Galloway and and um you know I he and goodie you know Indiana has eight really really solid players there’s not a lot of teams in the country that can say that and and I think I think the three guys that came off the bench tonight Luke goody Bryson Tucker and Kanan Carlile all three could very easily you know slotted into those starting roles maybe maybe only two of them because I don’t know that you’re taking renew mbako or Balo off the floor to start the game but you know there’s eight players that um you know there’s six of them that are pretty interchangeable two of them are are big guys but there’s six of those eight that are pretty darn interch and that’s a good to be in if you’re Indiana uh up next for the hooers Nebraska at the end of the week a little bookend games again another Friday game hell’s with these Friday night games man come on come on man uh but they have to travel on the road on top of that you go to Nebraska on a Friday night uh probably not the boy this is not gonna sound the way I ain’t me it because I love Lincoln it’s a great great town but Lincoln Nebraska is probably not where you want to be on a Friday night uh if hopefully their fans are bored too and all stay home and hopefully they’re snowed in and can’t come to the game and it’s a dead crowd and Indiana has a chance to go in there and steal one well they’re gonna need to that that’s a game that Indiana actually I hate to use the word has to win on the second game of the Big 10 season kind of a game Indiana has to win I think well has to is I know this time of year but I know just when I look at the rest of the conference that’s why I think that what you’re saying and and this is always true and and when you’re able to get off to a good start and you know all the teams every team in the Big 10 is playing these two games you know out in front of when the whole conference season starts and you’re able to get off to a good start and win and put yourself at the top of the Big 10 because if there’s going to be a bunch of teams that are two- 0 but if you’re one of those teams that gets to start out two- 0 there’s a awful lot of good teams that didn’t and aren’t aren’t going to start out two and 0 and you just give yourself such an advantage plus I will say like Indiana’s got to go on the road and and steal four five victories I don’t know if they play Minnesota on the road or not um but they’ve got to go steal four or five victories on the road to have a even have a chance to win the Big 10 and Nebraska is not as good as they were last year they’re still pretty good but they’re not has three players out for the season what’s Russell saying three players are out for the season did they get suspended or they no I I I’m assuming by injury which I I wasn’t aware of that I only popped that up because earlier I said that Louisville’s probably a tournament team if they’ve got three guys out they’re not making a damn tournament that’s for sure well one of them Chucky burn they’re definitely not but uh but I mean you know you’ve got to steal some road games and this is one I think I think Nebraska will be favored I think based on what they did last year um I I I think Nebraska’s probably you know this is a game Indiana is not going to be expected to win but um this would be a great one to steal this would be one be a good one to go get You’ put yourself in a real good position well every game like this that you don’t get you’re going to have to get it someplace and whether that’s on the road against a much tougher opponent they’re they’re going to have to steal a win like that someplace during this season if they want to to move forward in the postseason because I I don’t think a a sub 500 Big 10 team Big 10 record team is going to play in the tournament so it’s going to be very very tough with 18 teams that are going to be fighting in those 20 games that you play you’re going to have to steal a win somewhere and I’m looking it up right now like they they do not play at Minnesota so um that’s not going to be one of the ones they’re going to be able to go get they’ve got between at Nebraska their first two big 10 Road games are at Nebraska and at Penn State now I would have told you before state was one you you probably should win I don’t really feel that way anymore because I watched Chanel Purdue that wasn’t even a g that wasn’t even a game that because they have a bunch of veteran players and they got off to a good start and you know they’ve got a guard Le team um I mean Ace Baldwin is still there believe it or not like I I swear I think I played against him uh but he’s still there and when I looked at their lineup puff Johnson’s still there the Hicks guy is still there uh I mean the the nucleus of their Puff Daddy they’re all right yeah I mean puff Johnson is a much I mean this was a festar recruit that was at North Carolina and and you know now he’s got a little confidence at Penn State like he’s a different player and so I’m just saying like when I when I’m looking at stealing you know games and we just watched Illinois get beat at Northwestern Ohio State’s not going to be an easy one Iowa is your other Road game got go go to Iowa michig State Ohio State Northwestern might be a game there Northwestern not they were just got beat Illinois just got beat there uh you’ve got to go to Wisconsin where Indiana’s had no luck for the last 3,000 years uh Michigan State I mean the real opportunity is going to be the end of the Big 10 season and they the two of the last three they play at Washington and at Oregon I mean that’s Oregon got beat at home by UCLA last night I mean maybe they’re beatable I don’t know enough about them but yeah but UCLA is one of the teams one of the better teams in the conference this year probably yeah Oregon was too they were undefeated like 12 I know it just I mean that’s what I mean like every every single game every single Road game is an opportunity to steal one and put yourself in a great position like if you had to guess right now like like let’s just throw it out there I I’ll say the winner of the Big 10 might have four for sure maybe five losses think about that I I I I may be nuts I talked about it on the show today I I said will the Big 10 winner have up to seven losses maybe no way no way I only think that because there are I’ve never seen this many teams usually there are I agree with you two maybe three that are at the top that are like oh crap nobody wants to play and then you’ve got that middle it’s all middle right now it’s from the very outside of Minnesota like I I don’t know enough about Washington UCLA or Oregon or USC yet um but but I will say this um I don’t I I don’t know where Indiana is gonna get I mean I I don’t know I’m just trying to look at I can’t figure out I can’t figure out without Indiana figure playing better I kind of lost my train of thought sorry but um these Road games are going to be difficult they’re going to be Indiana is gonna have to do some good stuff and play better than they’ve been playing um and and they’re gonna have to play good at home that starts this oh for sure no doubt about it but that starts this Friday like this Friday is your opportunity to throw everything that happened in Atlant everyone will forget I promise you everyone will forget what happened in Atlanta go win this game on Friday like I I and I firmly baby winning cures everything uh and that covers a lot and that would certainly cover this well uh looking forward to the next game of course we’ll get to talk to you before then uh so we’ll get to
