Utah Jazz big man Walker Kesler is thought to be one of the most sought-after bigs out there on the trade market and now we know what the Jazz want in return I’m Trevor Lane this is the basketball bulletin make sure you subscribe right here to our fast growing NBA channel we sure are appreciative of all the support that we’ve gotten and we would love it if you would come along with us on this journey so hit that subscribe button right now all right let’s get into what’s going on with the Utah Jazz you know I I posted a video a little bit earlier this morning about Utah and the current situation round few specific players uh on the trade market now this is from Michael Scotto of Hoops hype uh the Jazz have put themselves in contention for kooper flag with the losing that they’ve been doing yeah absolutely they’re one of the worst teams in the NBA whether it’s Cooper flag or otherwise they’re going to have one of the better picks in this year’s NBA draft and this is a loaded draft class so I think Utah pretty happy with their their tanking so far uh due to the collective bargaining agreement Lowry marketing can’t be traded that’s right so he’s totally off the market forget about Lowry mark and cannot be traded till next summer Walker castler Jordan Clarkson John Collins and Colin ston are the players that teams are keeping an eye on with the Utah Jazz now I talked again a little bit earlier this morning about Clarkson about Colin seon and specifically quite a bit about John Collins and what they could bring to the trade market but now we’ve got a sense of what it’s going to cost to get Walker Kesler teams gauging Kessler’s availability in Utah have Come Away with the sense it’ll take at least two first round picks to pry him from the Jazz which is is a high asking price in their eyes Okay so a high asking price this is why when people say why aren’t trades getting done right now this is why because most teams around the market they know if you’re in the buyer position you know that prices are going to be high right now you start the negotiations and over the next month plus nearly two months really you’ll be seeing prices start to drop and drop and drop and then eventually it’ll get to a point where you can get serious about making a deal and conversely from the sellers side offers are low right now and they will go up and up and up as we get closer both sides figure why give your best offer right now when a lot of times team don’t really make actions don’t actually get something done until the trade deadline itself deadlines spark activity so that’s why right now things aren’t necessarily getting done teams are looking at the price tag for Walker Kessler would teams like Walker Kessler absolutely absolutely teams would love to get Walker Kesler but they don’t believe that he’s worth necessarily that price tag now is that accurate or are they just trying to drive a high hard bargain well let’s take a look at what Walker Kesler has done this seon I mean putting up a hell of a season right now for the Utah Jazz back in the starting lineup you look at what he’s doing 73% from the field that’s because pretty much everything he’s doing is just is dunks for the most part but 10.4 rebounds 2.4 2.9 blocks that’s absolutely fantastic stuff you know you’ve got he’s not going to give you a ton of point points he’s not going to be this finesse scoring big man but you need rebounding you need somebody who can roll hard to the rim and specifically you need somebody who can protect the bucket Walker Kessler can give you that the man is averaging a double double though just barely 10.4 rebounds 10.5 points but he’s also a very very young player and I think that’s got to be attractive as well now there is a negative when we look at his contract and we’ll get there in just a moment but he’s only 23 years old so if you trade for Walker Kessler right now in theory you could have it’s very rare in the NBA that this happens but he could be on your team he could be your center for the next decade like that’s that is possible here with Walker Kesler which is not going to be true of some of the other guys the other bigs that are out there on the market when we talk about say like eonis Valen chunis or Clint capella those guys are going to be more short-term stop Gap type players that you could plug in whereas Walker Kessler could be your guy for the next decade of course if you’re willing to pay him uh to go a little bit further though into what he producing this is where you can really see the value that he’s bringing we go into uh what he’s doing on the tracking side of things check out what he does at The Rim in terms of opponent’s field goal percentage look at that at The Rim he is lowering opponent’s field goal percentage by 16% compared to their their average less than 10 feet still at 16% so anywhere in that painted area now wemi is like 19% but think about that he’s not all that that far off as a rim protector from what he is very much deterring shots at The Rim he’s blocking a ton of shots he’s making a Major Impact there and if you think the Utah Jazz don’t know that you’re crazy the Utah Jazz know how valuable he is protecting the rim you can see uh compared to last season what Walker Kessler did at The Rim you can see how much he’s improved there 12% at 11% in the painted area last season so he has his game has gr as a shop blocker he is continuing to improve and if you’re looking for the ability to create a no-fly zone around the basket there’s few options that are going to be better than Walker Kessler that are realistically available on the market so is he worth two first round picks I mean he just might be if Rim protection is what you’re needing and remember not all first round picks are created equal so if we’re talking fairly heavily protected first maybe it makes sense now the other thing to keep in mind and this is something I love about Walker Kessler’s contract I mean he’s look at this I can’t even get him on the screen because he’s down here at the bottom he’s only making $3 million this season now if you’re a team that’s trading for him you have to be aware that he’s extension eligible next summer if you’re going to give up significant assets like two first round picks would be well you got to be ready to give him that contract extension and commit longterm to him next summer so that’s another thing that you have to keep in mind if you’re going to trade for Walker Kesler but in terms of making the math work I mean pretty much any team can make the math work on a Walker kler trade and that’s even the teams that are second tier apron clubs that can’t aggregate salaries it’s not like you’re trying to trade for Zack LaVine and he’s at $43 million you’re trying to stack up like four or five salaries in order to get there that is not the case at all with Walker kastler maybe the easiest contract of the desirable players in the NBA to trade for in terms of just getting enough money uh in a deal to make this work Walker Kessler again making 2.9 Million just under $3 million easy easy stuff and you’ve got him under contract next year at just under five million and zero of that is guaranteed I mean great great contract here uh for Walker Kessler or for the the Utah Jazz I suppose not a great contract for Walker kastler but he’s going to look to get paid this coming summer so again it goes back to is he worth two first I mean if they’re protected first yes he’s not is he the kind of guy where you can say that’s it we’re all in this guy is going to lead our team to a championship no no but I do believe he can be a very quality and very important piece on a contending team and I love the fact that at just 23 years old he’s a guy that can be in a system in a with a team for a decade potentially because I’ll tell you the other thing that brings that also brings and I know guys don’t stick with a team for a decade anymore that’s just not the era that we live in but the other thing that brings it it brings future flexibility that’s what youth brings future flexibility you look at the Nets Buon bogdanovich let’s say they trade him he’s what 35 36 years old if a team trades for him you know that he is providing the last of his value on your team you’re not going to be able to flip him down the road for other assets Walker Kessler it’s the exact opposite it’s the exact opposite as long as you don’t go crazy with this contract extension if you go get Walker Kesler and let’s say three years from now four years from now your team needs to Pivot and you need to do something else he’s he’s going to be what 26 27 years old he’s not going to be way past his Prime and he will be a guy that you could turn back into draft Capital should your team find yourself in a situation where you need to do that now of course injuries and things are unpredictable but Walker Kessler’s age I believe is a major advantage on the trade front as well so let me ask all of you out there is Walker Kesler worth let’s call it two top 10 let’s call it one unprotected and a top 10 protected first would you give up that much for Walker kastler right now the market is saying no and I think the market is hoping hoping teams around the NBA are hoping hoping that the Utah Jazz will ultimately come off of that two first closer to the trade deadline and be willing to take a first and like some seconds or something like that now I’ll also say if I’m Utah I don’t have to trade Walker kler I can can make a very convincing argument that I can just keep him and and I don’t have to move him at all because he’s young enough to to be part of the core of the future and he’s been playing really well so that’s the other challenge unlike with say again going back to the Nets with Dennis shuder the bulls with say Lonzo ball these veteran guys that are on that are on expiring contracts There’s real motivation hey let’s move this piece right now while we can because he’s probably not here next year with Walker Kesler unless the Jazz decide they do not want to be the team to pay him on his next contract for whatever reason if they decide that but unless that’s the case they really are not motivated to sell on Walker Kesler unless they get a pretty high asking price so going to be a fascinating battle negotiation that we’re going to see with Walker Kessler maybe all the way up through the trade deadline but a very attractive young player who can do a lot of things for you at the rim and the Jazz maybe rightfully so they want a couple of first round picks in exchange for him so again I ask you is he worth it let me know in the comments section down below and don’t forget to go check out our most most recent video on the other jazz players specifically John Collins who could find their way onto the market
