wanted to sort of bring it all together so let’s start out with the injury updates because quite frankly that is uh pretty important for the New York Islanders dealing with so many injuries and we’ll start with the good news JG Paso who had missed the last two games with a lower body injury was back at practice yesterday Monday uh before the Islanders headed up to Montreal to face the Canadians and he was not on the top line anymore and we’ll get into that a little bit more uh but Pou did indeed skate was a full participant in practice had uh third line uh was where they put him where Patrick W put him in between Kyle mlan and Oliver walstrom on his wings uh whereas you still have the bo Horvat Anders Lee Simon Holstrom Trio at the top of the depth chart and look obvious pageo he will be a game time decision for tonight’s game in Montreal and it’ll be important I mean you you get a 60.4% Faceoff winning percentage if JG pageo is there he is a penalty killer he is one of your better checking and defensive forwards and he can add occasional offense five goals five assists in 23 three games that puts him roughly on what about a oh maybe a 33 Point season so you know not the greatest Pace offensively but Paso you know still able to do other things whether it’s faceoffs checking penalty killing that contribute to the team’s win so game time decision for JG pajo then there’s the bad news the Islanders basically announced that goalie semian varlamov is day-to-day with a lower body injury and so for Monday’s practice they recalled goalie Marcus hogberg from Bridgeport on an emergency basis now the team did say that they do expect varlamov to travel with the team to Montreal whether or not he will be ready to be the back up goalie or not remains to be seen But at the very least that is uh kind of the expectation that you have uh vley should be ready they wanted maybe just to rest him in practice and we’ll see whether or not he is ready to go as the backup if not then hogberg will take over and back up Ilia soken so we will see what ends up happening hogberg not expected to travel with the team uh to Montreal if that changes we will certainly know now just to go over the lines at practice it was Horvat Lee Holstrom on the top line Nelson sov Palm on the second line Pou mlan and walstrom on the third line cek Martin and fashing on the fourth line Pierre enval once again on the outside looking in and then on defense it was Romanov and poock George and Dobson cholowski and Mayfield Hutton serving as the extra attacker and Patrick W spoke to the media after practice and was very direct and very uh blunt I would say about why he is going to scratch Pierre Ang ball again tonight against the Habs he said very simple bring the puck to the net and stay at the net that’s it it’s sad but right now there’s guys that are playing better than him they’re probably not as talented as him but they’re playing better than he is if he was helping me I promise you this he’d play it doesn’t get too much harsher than that when you are discussing a player who you know is not going to be in the lineup and I think a big question will be and will become when everybody is is healthy again when you’ve got guys who are ready to come back into the lineup whether it’s Anthony duclair or Matthew barzal you know at what point do you see a decision will have to be made about pier angal and I could tell you right now if enval is not going to be ready to play the kind of game Patrick W wants him to play I would say it is fairly safe to say that he may it be back in Bridgeport again or he could be a a black Ace for a long long time where only if somebody else gets injured do you end up seeing more from Pierre angal so you know where does angal fit in he is clearly not a top six guy uh and if he’s not going to play the style of play that Patrick W wants him to play uh then clearly he’s not going to play in the bottom six let alone the top six how far did this go Patrick W told reporters that if JG Paso is a nogo tonight if he you know the game decision is he needs another couple of days to rest he’s not quite ready yet he’ll go back to 11 forwards and seven defenseman just like he played Saturday against Buffalo so right now Pierre angal is so deep in Patrick W’s dogghouse that he would rather play short one forward and add another defenseman rather than put Pierre angal in the lineup and keep in mind again not only is this a situation where you know this team is already missing two-thirds of its Top Line in Anthony duclair and Matthew barzal by the way no no progress right now with Adam pelic and uh Anthony duclair they’re still skating on their own they have not participated in a full practice with the T uh and by the way uh Matthew barzal still not skating even on his own yet so that that is the latest updates but when you look at the forwards not only are you missing barzal and duclair but you’ve got Kyle mlan who has three points in 25 games Oliver walstrom with two points a goal and an assist in 21 games Casey cikas a goal and an assist in 25 games Hudson fashing no points in seven games Matt Martin one assist in 14 games yeah he had a goal overturned on a questionable call the other night but again it’s not like this team has guys who are producing in the bottom six and yet Patrick W clearly feels like his best option remains not playing another forward at all not calling up another forward from Bridgeport he’ll go 11 forwards and seven defenseman again because Pierre Ang ball is just not doing the things he needs to do to get back in the lineup and again this is a little bit of accountability something that this franchise needs to do more of you need more accountability on this roster and it shouldn’t just be Pierre angal but you know again even with all these injuries if enval cannot get in the lineup that just tells you how deep in the chatau bowwow of Patrick W Pierre Ang Bal is right now we have got more to get to on today’s show we’re going to talk a little bit more about Noah Dobson and where he’s at as he continues to try to get his way out of a disappointing first 25 games to the season we’ll talk about Dober we will talk about uh we will preview tonight’s game against the Montreal Canadians and for our Islanders birthday of the day uh another Suter brother who you may not remember was briefly an Islander during the 1994 95 season let’s see if you can guess who that is it’s not that hard there’s only so yeah there’s six Suter brothers from the original group let’s see if you can guess which one it is we’ve got all that and more coming up on today’s locked on Islanders podcast today’s episode is brought to you by your friends at prize pick you can now win pretty egregious you know I mean he is really struggled he has one goal and 10 points in 25 games that puts him at about what a 35 36 point pace for the season I’m doing the math real quick in my head last year he had in 25 games 23 points so more than double he had five goals and 18 assist sis and now Patrick W in addition to sending that message to Pierre angal he sent a little message to Noah Dobson as well and every dayers you’ll remember this is something that I talked about a couple of weeks ago and I asked why why would Noah Dobson be out on the ice in the third period of a game where the Islanders are trying to protect a one or two goal lead in the final few minutes because he is just struggling so badly in his own Zone turning pucks over uh getting caught out of position making bad decisions chasing behind the the goal when his defense partner is already there failing to pick up the trailer he’s he’s made a lot of mistakes in his own Zone well Saturday Saturday Patrick w i i i maybe he listened to the podcast who knows but Patrick W did not play no adoption for the final 6 minutes and 41 seconds of the game with the Islanders ahead two to nothing now part of the reason he was able to do that is that the the Islanders did have seven defensemen on the roster and that allowed them to not have to worry about you know tiring out guys because you know you had five other defensemen uh or six other defensemen Five Guys who you could certainly turn to if you’re going to sit uh Noah Dobson and W basically on Monday explained in that game we just felt like the guys in front of him were playing better hockey that’s all there’s nothing behind this in that game I think Tommy as in Tommy albolene thought the guys were playing better than him again less ice time for Noah Dobson and and in addition send that message get him to sort of shake himself out of this slump but more importantly if you’re protecting a lead very little to know if you’ve got seven defensemen on you know active in a game I think there is very little reason if you’re trying to hold on to a a lead late in the game by one or two goals to have Noah Dobson out there on the ice until he shows he’s playing better defensively and you know you don’t want to pile up on a man when he’s slumping you want to support that player you want to help them get out of that slump but at the same time Noah Dobson right now 10 points in 25 games that’s less than half of the number of points he was on Pace for a year ago he is a minus n plus minus right now which by the way happens to be the worst on the team and you know he just continues to struggle really in all facets of the game and that is something that the Islanders need to work out and fix hopefully he gets the message but we’ll see now a little Cole Eiserman update Eiserman continues to do really really well right now in Boston he is at uh you know at Buu and he has nine goals and 13 points in 14 games well the uh World Juniors are coming up at the end of this month and right now on Team USA it announced its preliminary roster and Cole Eiserman is on there now 15 forwards 10 defensemen three goalies 28 players uh announced in this preliminary roster and uh great to see Cole Eiserman make the team and hopefully hopefully uh he will not only be on the team but play well now Danny Nelson who was on the team a year ago also invited uh Quinn Finley who was on the team last year did not get an invitation for team USA’s preliminary roster Team USA gets started on December 26th uh so we’ll see they face Germany in that first game but Cole Eiserman barring knock wood an injury should be a part of the team and you know I it it’s it’s been great to watch Cole Eiserman watching the highlights watching an occasional uh part of a game or game that he’s playing here’s the thing and you know fans you got you got to sort of be aware Cole Eiserman is scoring and he’s doing the things that he does well that we knew he did well before the Islanders drafted him the important thing and it’s not something you’re gonna see if you just read the box score or the stat line you have to watch the games but the key is not going to be just how many goals he scores or how dangerous he is what Cole Eiserman does without the puck does he get back and and back check is he sound position does he battle for pucks 5050 does he go to the net does he do the little things that an NHL player needs to do to get ice time the one thing you don’t want to have happen to Cole Eiserman or any Prospect is to see them develop a game similar to Pierre angal where there’s no physicality you don’t go to the net you stay on the perimeter uh maybe you don’t play defense which may you know not necessarily be Ang Ball’s issue but you want to see him develop into a full hockey player not just a goal scorer and again the fact that he’s got 13 points in in 14 games against college kids it means something but that doesn’t mean he can replicate those numbers against bigger faster stronger and smarter as in more experienced NHL players so I’m enthused I’m happy he still is according to most scouts at least another year away but hopefully hopefully uh we’ll see more good stuff from Cole Eiserman and having him at World Juniors is a plus for Eiserman for the Islanders and for all involved so I’m glad to make that announcement all right more to get to on today’s show uh we will preview tonight’s game against the Habs an emotional home coming for Patrick W going back to Montreal we’ll have that we’ll have our Islanders birthday of the obviously an emotional homecoming for one Patrick W and you know him going back to the place where his NHL career started where he won a Stanley Cup or two in 1986 and again in 1993 that remains believe it or not the last time a Canadian based team won the Stanley Cup the Habs are struggling and you know they have lost four of their last five losing to Boston and the New York Rangers in their last two games and the big issue really has been defense although offense not great Montreal 24th in goal scored 29th in goals against uh the power play right in the middle 15th in the league the penalty kill surprisingly enough is seven in the league they are actually doing pretty well uh the goenda and Kaden Primo now montmo has started 17 games Primo seven and Primo started the last game against Boston so it is very likely we see Sam monmo tonight against the Islanders he’s six 10 and two on the year with a 3-12 goals against in an 897 save percentage Primo 23 and one but a 4.45 goals against and an 844 save percentage so obviously neither of these goalies is shining at the moment Nick Suzuki leads the team with 15 assists and 24 points including uh four power play assists Cole callfield 16 goals to lead the team he has 22 points now uh keep in mind uh there are some dangerous guys on this team but they also may be getting back and it we may not know this until game time Patrick l he has not played yet this season at least not during the regular season for the Canadians but he may be making his season debut with the Habs could be tonight could be you know in their next game on Thursday against nville but keep your eyes open because L is a dangerous scorer and even if he you know isn’t at 100% you know they could activate him for this game and we’ll see what happens the line combinations for Montreal Nick Suzuki Cole Coffield and Alex new hook are the top line Christian Dvorak yuce lovsky and brandan Gallagher of the second line from left to right Joshua Roy Kirby Doc and Josh Anderson are the third line and then it’s Jake Evans as the center Emil heinan and Joel armia are his wings on defense Lane Hudson and Mike Mat are the top pair Kaden ghoul and jayen strumble are the middle pair uh and then you have David Savard and Arbor Ash kaj as the third pair with the goalies as I mentioned manmo and Primo on IR Patrick Li Raphael arve pinard and right now David Ryan Bacher is out of the lineup we’ll see if he is able to return look if you can’t get some goals past this Montreal team that is struggling that is 29th in the league defensively well you know the Islanders they have to take advantage they have to be able to do that and then the way the Canadians are playing and struggling to score their power play is good five on five they really struggle the Islanders need to stay out of the box and obviously they’re going to need a solid game in goal from uh Ilia sokin who is almost certain to go tonight based on the fact that VAR Lov miss practice yesterday he may be ready to be the backup but obviously the Islanders would rather give him a little bit more rest seven o’clock Eastern Time start looking forward to this game and the emotional return to Montreal for Patrick W all right time for our Islanders birthday of the day we all know Brent Sutter and Dwayne Sutter they were part of the dynasty years winning Stanley Cups but there was another Sutter brother who played for the Islanders I’ll be it briefly and that was Ron Sutter the native like all the Su Brothers a viking Alberta 6 feet 180 lbs drafted in the first round fourth overall by the flyers in 1982 played 10 games for the Flyers that year and then stayed with the Flyers until the 9192 season when he played for the blues then he played for the nordique and then in 9495 the lockout shorten Year Ron Suter played for the Islanders a goal and Five Points in 27 games later played for the Bruins the Sharks and the Flames before hanging up a skates after the 2201 season for his NHL career Ron Suter 1,093 games 205 goals 533 points and 1,352 penalty minutes add eight goals and 40 points in4 playoff games none of those however with the Islanders his best game as an Islander this one was easy to pick April 7th 1995 Islanders visiting Madison Square Garden where all the Dennis pot van fans still chant his name every game and uh facing the New York Rangers it’s Tommy soderstrom in goal for the Isles it’s Mike RoR getting the start for the Rangers and the Rangers jumped out to a two nothing lead on goals by Alex Koval and Pat verbi but Bob Beers and Travis Green responded for the Islanders Mark Messier gave the Rangers back the lead in the second period but Travis Green responded and the teams went into the third period all even at three and then our Islanders birthday of the day Ron Sutter scored his only goal as an Islander Marty mcginness the only assist and that was the game-winning goal coming just two minutes in minute 59 into the third period Islanders beat the Rangers at the Garden by a final score of 4 to3 Ron Suter he scored the game winner he was a plus one and he had four shots on goal which tied him for the team lead in this game with Travis Green sostrom with 31 saves for the Islanders to get the win but Ron Sutter the other Sutter the Forgotten Islander Sutter brother he is our Islanders birthday of the day if you
