all right ladies and gentlemen welcome back to the show we have Nathan Marion coming back on for I believe his fourth appearance on the show and if you’re new here hit that subscribe button I cover a lot of college basketball um some Combat Sports I want to do some more entertaining some more fun stuff outside just me talking Sports maybe some one-on-one basketball videos more uh adding on to that series maybe we’ll even get Nathan to hop on for a game we’ll see but uh yeah Nathan welcome back to the show how you doing doing well doing well getting ready for this big game we got on Saturday this is I mean I was thinking about it like this is the biggest marquet Wisconsin game possibly ever in terms of just how they’re ranked they’ve never played in the tournament or anything and I don’t think they’ve ever both been ranked this High when they’ve played so I am very excited and as you said this is I think my fourth year on here and their own three in the years I’ve done this they’ve lost three in a row so hopefully this is the year that Marquette finally gets a win and you know can uh break the little skid that they’ve had under shock of not being able to beat Wisconsin yeah yeah no doubt no doubt so well yeah before we get into this preview I know that you were at the Wisconsin Badger Michigan game and I also heard you were beefing with Bucky a little bit would you mind sharing your story with Bucky I think Bucky hit you with like a 107 a 108 round it was it was pretty brutal it it was it was Devastation but go go ahead and tell that story so yeah we were in this suite and you know I’m I’m watching I had some money on Michigan so I’m rooting for Michigan but whatever and obviously I just I’m going to root against Wisconsin but yeah Bucky came over and was like a little he was over like just the like one little section over kind of like waving to the crowd or whatever and I just said hey Bucky go Marquette and he started like you know pointing to a certain area and then giving a little too small s and I was like what the what is going on here well then he also then came around into the suite we didn’t know he was doing this but he came around into the suite and like kind of scared us because he like knocked on the on the glass and we all like kind of looked back and then he kind of started like chirping at me now now we were like it was in good fun at that point like he was like yeah I think giving me the L or something like that and someone was recording it so we think they might be putting it on social media possibly on Saturday either if they win or maybe just in the morning I don’t know but we we saw someone taking video like it was like a planned thing of like okay you go around and like you know say something or like like you know give him some give him some trash talk and someone was recording it so we were we were waiting to see if they were going to post it that night or if they might post it on on game day so I didn’t know Bucky added in him I mean that that’s that’s pretty that’s pretty rough stuff right there I’m not gonna lie but game recognized game game recognized game but uh yeah and you you said that this is you know perhaps one of the the highest ranked games ever between the two teams and just imagine the hype had both teams would have won earlier this week heading into this it’s still huge but there is an opportunity for this game to just be massive so but it’s still exciting still going to be a lot of fun and yeah tell me your thoughts when you were at the game what were you thinking about Wisconsin and Michigan yeah I mean Wisconsin plays like I was kind of trying to figure out the play style a little bit I know one game doesn’t always totally it’s not indicative of a whole season I mean if you watched maret yesterday you probably didn’t think they’re a great defensive team but they’ve been a fantastic defensive team so I get all that um yeah I was kind of trying to figure out okay what are some maybe ways to exploit them and I I also was just trying to figure out I hadn’t watched tan I hadn’t W like you know I know Blackwell a little bit but like I wanted to see kind of tan because I hadn’t watched much of Wisconsin at all this year I knew he was playing well and kind of see okay how is he playing and he’s definitely impressive like he’s a good player I just noticed and it was kind of a confirmation of what I thought that he he loves to get in the paint he loves to you know try to draw fouls and get to the line and that’s a big part of his game not that that’s his only part of his game I mean I know he can score outside of that as well but he really loves to try to get fouls and so it’s going to be something that marquette’s going to have to try to avoid because if you can if tan is able to get these guys in foul trouble we’re going to talk about I’m sure you know some of the injuries Marquette has that is kind of affecting their depth right now and they’re not going to be a ton deep it doesn’t look like if if Chase Ross isn’t able to play and it doesn’t sound like Zade Lowry’s is gonna be playing so if he can get them in foul trouble it could be a huge game Cher in a game that you know will in all likelihood be pretty tight that could be something that completely changes the game so it’s going to be a main focus for for Marquette I think is trying not to get in fou trouble and trying to prevent some of those free throws that Tan’s been able to get throughout the season no doubt tan is shooting 93.7% from the free throw line so far this year and he averaged 8.8 attempts per game which is nutty and then another guy who also for Wisconsin will get to a hoop not as well as ton but it’s Blackwell Blackwell’s averaging 4.3 free throw attempts per game shooting 82% and then yeah Wisconsin that is kind of the strategy this year to a certain extent just to be physical and get to the hoop because they’re actually leading the country in free throw percentage this year so far and so it’s been a good strategy uh so far for Wisconsin um but going into this uh Marquette Iowa State game last night Iowa State’s really good they were really hot and uh it’s it was at Iowa State but just give me your thoughts on that game a little bit I know that you were watching uh Nathan was actually at the Bucks game yesterday and he was watching it on his phone did you get a chance to maybe watch the highlights how did that go yeah I I mean I was able to watch a decent chunk of the game and like really get I mean I at halftime in the Bucks game I was kind of able to lock in and and really watch more of it but I definitely got the flow of the game I kind of could tell what was going on I know for the start of that game Marquette did a really poor job of keeping Iowa state from the rim they kind of got whatever they wanted there and then I know Chase Ross got hurt and cam Jones struggled which I’m not I wasn’t surprised at you had lipy guarding him um on Iowa state who’s one of the best defenders in the country and I just I knew that would probably be a little bit of a tough matchup for cam I was hoping he’d shoot better than six of 21 but I mean at the end of the day like I I didn’t expect him to completely dominate that matchup if he did that would have been insane um still had nine assists so he still like had his impact on the game but didn’t do enough for them to be able to win that game you know against a really good team on the road and then I mean it’s it’s I’ll talk about it you know when we talk about the game but David Joplin it’s just too hot and cold with him he has some insanely good games he had 29 against Georgia played great and he has some really good games against some of the you know worst teams that they’ve played this season but too many of these you know just kind of disaster games where he just shoots you out of these games we saw it we’ve seen it a couple times against Wisconsin especially last year when he was I think three of 13 or yeah three of 13 from the field one of nine from three last year against Wisconsin just like he has too many games in big matchups that are just brutal last night eight points three of 13 against Purdue nine points one of six from three against Maryland seven points one of seven from three he’s got to be better and it’s it’s kind of gonna be I mean it always is for this team in big games but it’s gonna be a big X Factor of like which David Joplin do we get do we get the one that showed up against Georgia or do we get the one that we’ve seen in the other big games this year where it’s it’s not just like oh he wasn’t great it’s man he was a disaster and that was once again the case that was once again the case last night I’ll give him credit that he’s at least been better on defense this year so he’s not a liability on both ends but it’s the offense has to step up and again if if Chase Ross is out and you’re you know you got Zade out if the the depth is continuing to get less and less you’re going to need those top guys to be better than they usually are and he’s got to step up yeah Joplin got his ass clamped by wall last year no doubt about it and and the thing about Joplin is kind of what I’ve been hearing from Marette fans and when I watch I think of uh and this is not political commentary at all but I think of that Trump meme where he says get him off turn off the lights you know when the lights are bright Joplin is not at his best he’s the depal killer he is I just I just you know he probably has some anxiety that that’s kind of my guess when the stage is a little too bright like know go ahead well I was gonna say we always well it started this year but we call him or we say like small Arena Joplin because when he plays in these small Arenas he plays really well you know depal win trust Arena um when he plays in the in Marquette they have like the one game a year where they play at the AL Maguire Center instead of at f he plays really well and and then as soon as he goes back to playing like in the big Arenas and it’s like all right well all of a sudden he plays worse so yeah there is definitely some of that and I think yeah Marquette fans can see that too where it’s like okay he’s in most of these big games he is not very good and it’s something that’s been concerning because I mean if they’re going to make some type of run this year if they’re going to be a legit team he’s got to be way more consistent than this and he at least again I’m not saying he has to be like the 29 Points he he got against Georgia he doesn’t have to do that every game but you you got to be better than seven eight nine points on you know three of 15 shooting like you can’t have it that bad um you got to at least be a little bit better than that absolutely and I actually felt really bad for him against NC State where he had a really rough first half and then he got fouled on a three-pointer at the end of the half and it was one of those things where he’s a good shooter and I was like okay now they have three free throws to get a little rhythm and then have a good second half but he missed all three and the second half was just as bad as the first that that that was that was rough to watch that I I genuinely felt bad for him so we’ll see you know he’s a senior now maybe he can turn the corner as the season progresses who knows um but yeah marqu has a lot of new faces this year that are getting some minutes and uh they two guys coming off the bench putting double figures against Iowa State who are some of these new faces that could make some noise on Saturday for Marquette yeah the two big ones are Demaryius Owens and Royce Parham those guys have played really well in their minutes this season and they’ve definitely shown that they can make an impact right away they’re two freshman and you know we were all pretty excited to see them didn’t know how much they would play right away this season but they’re playing and again as as these injuries come up and you know marquette’s already been missing Shawn Jones to start the year and again i’ I mentioned mentioned or I mentioned several times Zade Lowry’s out Chase Ross might be out these guys are going to continue to get more minutes um Demaryius Owens played 26 against Iowa State Royce played 2 three and that’s that’s a lot of minutes to put on two freshman and they’ve you know at least been up to the challenge of like they they’ve played pretty well they’ve hung in there Demaryius had 11 points last night Roy had 17 um those guys are going to have to play consistently pretty well uh while this team has these injury issues because they just again they don’t have that much depth but good good uh start to their Marquette careers for them I think they’ve got a lot of fans pretty intrigued by them just with how they’ve they’ve started the season no doubt and if Ross is in play Saturday and it’s He’s listed as I think this in the long term I know from Marquette fans they want to get this game against Wisconsin I’m not saying it won’t happen but I think in the long term this could be a blessing in disguise for Owens to get more reps to get more comfortable expand his role then you bring back Ross and then Owens is ready to go off the bench I I do think big picture that could actually be a blessing in disguise we’ve seen it happen before around college basketball so we’ll see that that’s just a little bit of a you know a silver lining for Marquette fans here to think about um because that that wouldn’t be the first time something like that’s happened and then um yeah so Marquette new faces uh do you think Marquette is better or worse than they were last year on paper they’re you know they’re not as good when you lose kak and Oso and you lose that that pick and roll and everything but there’s something about this team that I think they are better than last year and I I for some reason trust them more than I did last year the defense is better I mean I think that’s kind of I think pretty much everyone agrees on that I mean they’re now a top 10 defense I think they’re sixth right now in kenpom defense and um the the the formula that they have and and it’s not that they didn’t have this last year but it’s even better this year than it was in years past is they dominate the turnover battle and so they they don’t turn over you know they very rarely turn it over and then they force a ton on the other end so they end up getting more shots than the other team and all the shots they take are good shots they take threes and they take layups they don’t take mid-ranges they’re all efficient shots so it’s like if you’re getting more shots and you’re getting good shots you’re probably going to usually win and the way in the past to beat them was okay if you were a really good rebounding team then you could you could kind of exploit them a little bit but they are better this year defensive rebounding I mean last year they were 270th in defensive rebounding I know I mean it’s still early but last year they were 270th defensive rebounding this year they’re right outside the top 100 so they’re definitely um better than they were last year in terms of you know preventing offensive rebounds not getting killed that way we were really worried when we played Georgia how that would how that would go and they did a really good job of um kind of swarming the boards and being able to get those they have several guys it’s not like they have any dominant big man that is you know gobbling up rebounds but like Joplin averages six a game cam Jones averages five rebounds um Chase Ross four like they they’ve really done a good job just as a committee um fixing the rebounding a little bit it was something that even like Oso struggled with with he just he wasn’t a super physical big and someone that could really just dominate the glass and sometimes that got exploited and I think this year they’ve just been a little bit more balanced with their rebounding sure if that makes sense so yeah I I think that that has made them a little bit harder to to exploit and again just the defense is so so good and they’ve had games where and I know again last year or last night it wasn’t fantastic they gave up 81 to Iowa State but but it’s Iowa State yeah it’s Iowa state they’re good it’s a road game against who’s you know team that’s going to be number two in the nation after this week so you know nothing to be like ashamed about but when they played Purdue I mean we Marquette shot eight of 25 from three nothing special and really just dominated the game because they got like I think it was 10 or 12 more shots than Purdue again they they always consistently get more shots they forc a ton of turnovers they forc Purdue into 15 turnovers a team that doesn’t turn it over a ton historically so they just seem to play their Style really really well and it’s hard to get them out of that style and it’s hard to beat them at that style so um it’s just a team that I really trust and I really like this balance they’ve struck I like the new guys and the defense with you know when they’re healthy with uh Chase Ross with Stevie Mitchell with Cam Jones that’s a really really good you know one one through three on defense and I think even Ben Gold’s been a good Defender this season he’s given them some solid minutes uh can be kind of inconsistent but the other thing I love about Ben gold is he plays really well in the big games and that’s again something we didn’t always see from like Oso uodo he didn’t always play great in those big games we don’t always see it from Joplin but Ben gold seems to play well when the lights are brightest and that’s you know a nice thing to have so um I really do think this team is like slightly I don’t even know if I want to say better I just trust them more a little bit than the than the team from from last year sure and at this time last year I said that for the Wisconsin side of things I said that I believe this is guard’s most talented te that he’s had at the time and as the next month went on that looked like a really good prediction but things began to fall apart a little bit uh AJ store I’m gonna blame quite a bit for that there were allegations rumors that he was brokering his services on the phone with Illinois and Kansas the middle of the season um I’m talking about how much you’re gonna pay me and he actually doesn’t even look that good at Kansas right now but um I I I thought that Wisconsin might have been that might have been guard’s most talented team last year it could have been maybe maybe not but I I right now I think this team is better than last season’s Wisconsin team um they have more depth they have more physicality um and that’s a big thing that I think Marquette fans should know heading to this game is Wisconsin’s really physically solid this year where kmond is over 200 pounds Blackwell’s over 200 pounds Tan’s about 220 and then Nolan winter is not a physical Beast he’s pretty young and skinny yet but he’s 7 foot and then CR is a fifth year senior even Gilmore coming off the bench is a fifth year senior he’s solid not that he’s going to be dropping 10 points or anything like that but he’s a physically solid Defender and then Kamari McGee is a senior coming off the bench he’s really solid and kind of like a six starter but I think there’s a lot more offens of flow to this team this year than last season uh between Chucky and store and a lot of guys who couldn’t really shoot the ball and granted cral and kond have gotten up the really slow start shooting but I think this team has better shooting they’re they just have a better vibe to them stor and Chucky didn’t have the best Vibe where they their body language wasn’t great they were they act like they were too cool for school but they weren’t good enough to act like that and then uh I I would take Kamari McGee and John tan to win basketball games at Wisconsin over he burn in store any day of the week and and a lot of it is just the locker room and who they are so roster talent wise I really like this Wisconsin team and you’re not going to like to hear this I actually probably I’m going to give a slight Edge to Wisconsin when it comes to roster Talent but here’s the thing is and I I think it’s about 5050 I mean I I don’t think there’s a huge shift either way I’m not saying Wisconsin’s a lot better maybe a slight Edge tiny Edge or basically the same I I but what I think is very true is Shaka smart to me at this point is an elite college basketball coach I think he’s one of the best coaches in the country and I think he maximizes the talent out of his team and his players um so I I I there’s few coaches I would take over Shaka smart right now and Shaka this is like the one game that he hasn’t had success in in his career he’s 0 and3 against Wisconsin so far I’m I I would it’d be kind of crazy if he goes 0 and four and cam Jones Goes 0 and four against Wisconsin is career that’d be pretty crazy um so it’s going to be tough but yeah that that that’s kind of my take there uh just get get into some of your keys for the game and you can respond to what I just said U if you disagree at all and then if you want to give me some keys for the game tomorrow no I don’t think I don’t think anything you said is crazy like even saying that maybe Wisconsin has the roster Edge like that’s that’s fair and and I don’t think this Marquette team is winning just based on roster and talent and stuff I think like you said it is coaching it is getting all these guys to buy in getting these pieces to fit together really well and everyone to play Marquette style of play is what’s winning them games and um because again I I don’t think the roster as good I mean just when you take away two guys that went to the NBA and are playing decently well in the NBA that were like dominant college basketball players obviously your roster is probably not going to be as good like you you lost kak and Oso it’s just it’s going to go down a little bit but I and again it just props to Shaka that those guys leave and it just keeps humming you know and it’s stillin yeah it’s still a great program and it’s still a team that is you know winning games and I think you know you mentioned how he this has been the one game he struggled with and yeah I mean ow and 0 and three we’re going to find out I was talking you I remember earlier about how it’s either it’s either Kik or it’s or it’s Shaka who’s the curse who who’s the one that was keeping them from winning games and so hopefully it was Kik and Shaka is able to win this one but um I will say it’s a good sign that they were able to beat the two big 10 teams they’ve played so far this year because in general they did have some issues playing Big 10 teams under shakka not just Wisconsin but other teams as well um not that they never beat them but they always seem to struggle with them the game just they they struggled and you know to go on the road and beat Maryland turn turn around and then you know dominate Purdue at home was like a really good sign that I’m like okay maybe maybe this team’s turned a corner in this in in the sense that there’s not a specific style that can really beat them and they’re they’re much harder to to beat than those other teams so um yeah as far as keys to the game you know I mentioned uh the free throws and how Wisconsin kind of uses that as a big part of their offense you know nearly a quarter of their points come from the line that’s something Marquette is going to have to prevent is getting in foul trouble letting tan letting Blackwell get to the line I know they’re going to be physical get in the paint you know try to sell calls try to get contact marquette’s got to be disciplined whether you know again I don’t know if Chase Ross is playing but Stevie Mitchell cam Jones Chase uh whoever Joplin whoever is guarding those guys you’ve got to be disciplined they got to stay down not bite on the pump fakes it kind of reminds me just in the little bit that I’ve watched them I don’t know if this is accurate but it kind of reminds me of like Jimmy Butler Demar de rozan type where they get like they’re really good at getting in the paint and then they’re able to kind of maneuver their bodies pump fake cell calls and get to the line and get points that way and you know it’s an effective way to score the ball you know to to be able to get in the paint and just get fouls like that’s a that’s an effective way to score and with how well they shoot on free throws as you mentioned number one in free throw percentage like it’s it’s a totally you know um like an effective way to play offense so marquette’s going to have to know that coming in and be able to to try to prevent that um I think a huge key is just going to be how much the officials at F surve let them play I think if the officials are letting stuff go and just letting them be physical which I hope they do because it’s a rivalry game I don’t want to see them calling a bunch of ticky tack stuff I think marquette’s in pretty good a pretty good spot because I think they’ll be able to get stops as long as they’re not fing but if they are calling a lot of tigy TAC stuff it could it could get a little bit ugly for Marquette with with how much you know Wisconsin will be able to get to the line and those guys will be able to convert at the line uh the other thing I kind of quick not to but um if you’re worried about the refs at home to me that signals that you’re not super confident in your team if you’re kind of already factoring in and baking in the the the calls at the fer because Marquette is one of the best homecourt advantages in the country so you’re worried I’m I’m just saying it to like I expect them to let them play and stuff but I’m saying if they are if they are calling Ticky Tac stuff I don’t you know I every now and then you get games like that where they just just seem to call everything and it’s like man and I think that in a game like this against this team that makes a huge huge difference because of how they play how well they convert at the line marquette’s lack of depth right now they need to stay out of fallou trouble they need to keep Wisconsin from the line if they are calling Ticky Tac stuff again if I had to guess I’m guessing they won’t and at that point I’ll be like hey I’m I’m pretty confident in this game as long as they don’t but I will say there there there could easily be a point where at halftime I’m going we’re not winning this game just because I know how this game is being officiated and it’s going to be very hard for us to win um but I I do anticipate they’ll let stuff go and I think um then it’ll come down to the other stuff I’m going to mention but like the turnovers kind of already touched on that Marquette just loves to dominate the turnover battle it is something they take pride in yes they always count the deflections they try to generate turnovers and stops that way um they’re they’re top 30 right now taking care of the ball averaging less than 10 turnovers a game and they’re number five in they’re number five turnovers forced uh 17 a game so they’re they like I said they get more shots in the opponent by turning you over a ton and then not turn it over themselves and when you get more shots in the opponent a lot of times you’re gonna end up winning um Wisconsin is a team that does take care of the ball really well and this has always kind of been the case in this matchup is at least in recent years it’s okay Marquette loves to turn you over Wisconsin doesn’t turn it over a ton and it’s okay which who which side will kind of give in and which side will win in this matchup the team that takes care of the ball or the team that turns you over um I do think I said this you know like in the last few years is at home it’s usually a little bit easier to play your style than it is on the road um going on the road I think Wisconsin is able to dictate the tempo just a little bit more than they would be going on the road playing in F serve so makes me feel a little bit better about how Marquette could possibly do forcing turnovers um you know getting the energy in that building up kind of just rushing Wisconsin a little bit and maybe getting them to make some mistakes that they wouldn’t normally make and just with how I don’t know with with how tenacious that Marquette defense is I don’t necessarily know exactly how good all the defenses are that Wisconsin’s faced so far this also being their first true Road game I I just think it will be a little bit of an eye opener for that Badger team of like oh okay all of a sudden we’re on the road against a team that is you know swarming us and and forcing a ton of turnovers that might take a little bit of an adjustment period for them in this game which you know could could be in marquette’s favor so again that’s something that marquette’s going to definitely prioritize getting a ton of turnovers getting out in transition you know using their athleticism all that stuff and kind of pushing the pace a little bit um so that stuff I think the turnovers and the free throws are the two biggest things because I don’t think either team is some you know dominant rebounding team or anything like that neither team has great big men um you know and then obviously who’s the best player on the floor will make a difference is it going to be cam is it going to be tan they’ve both been great it’s going to be really fun to see them kind of go head-to-head and we’ll see who can outd duel the other I’ll take cam Jones any day of the week but I could see a world where tan matches him if not exceeds him and if that’s the case that could be the difference in the game so that’s gonna also obviously be a big thing yeah so last year looking at this matchup is Wisconsin actually turned over Marquette and pushed the ball in transition a bit where I remember stor from Chucky Chucky had a nice uh finish over Defender he had igodo Chase Barling down from behind so Wisconsin last year and it was at home but I remember they were the ones kind of pushing in transition here and there and they kind of they out physical Marquette in that game for sure like they they were the ones who out physical them and I think Wisconsin this year is outside of flipping in Winter for wall because wall was a fifth year senior who was a lot stronger than he looked um I think Wisconsin has better physicality this year and Chucky was very solid but I do think Wisconsin’s got physicality and they have you know handful of guys who won two years ago at Marquette whether it was kmond who had the game-winning bucket you know Steven crra had a nice game and he I remember the least talked about poster dunk in the history of a rivalry was when he dunked over igaro um I thought that was a good dunk uh but uh Crow played well you even had Gilly coming off the bench and McGee actually had a really good game before McGee what McGee is a different player than he was two years ago I never thought he’d be as good as he is now I never thought that but even he had a good game so they there’s gonna be guys who know what to expect that like the fer is as unfriendly as an environment as it gets and Marquette I mean they they they have been there and done that which I do think will make a difference but my key points for Wisconsin is kind of what you’re saying especially if Ross isn’t playing and the depth is limited attack the pressure right like if Mar that’s pre pressuring you far away from the hoop attack it and where I think um maybe uh a quick whistle could benefit Wisconsin is if do they let Marquette get away with hand checks like 40 feet away from the hoop that makes a huge difference if Marquette is allowed to bump and hand check 30 40 feet away from the hoop um that that that’s huge right and that makes it very tough when you’re hand checking and bumping like that to attack the pressure so I do think that is important um whether they can get away with that or not and then the second uh thing I have is make cam Jones go right and even if he goes right understand that he is more than likely GNA spin back around to his left hand almost every time and if he does go all the way to the hoop with his right he’s probably gonna finish with his left hand on the right side rarely actually I believe he did it against Iowa City he had a right-handed layup but that’s a rare occurrence and you much rather live with that and then number three would be this kind of talks about physicality a little bit is attack Joplin and gold and where where do I think you could attack Joplin is I if I was guard I would not start Nolan winter he’s not going to do this but I would not start Nolan winter tomorrow and I would put tan at the four and just have him go right after Joplin because then You’ have McGee at the point you would have kmond uh tan is at the oh blackw the three tan four Crow five that’s how that’s the star lineup about go and if if Joplin gets match up with tan at all you go get that quick first step and get to the hoop and then gold struggled with wall a lot last year in that that matchup uh just physicality he’s a freshman um but I I Kow should kow’s off to a really bad start this year where he’s passing the ball well but finishing around the hoop his three-point shot it’s been bad but on paper a fifth year Crow should be able to score in the post against gold and then he’s really good if they double he’s a really good passer so those are kind of my keys and then if I was guard I would warn the refs about Stevie Mitchell’s offensive bag as in he’s a really smart player who I don’t think is the most explosive to the hoop so a lot of his game as offensive bag is jumping and kind of flailing into the defender and hoping the ref bails him out and I think Mitchell’s a great glue guy fantastic Defender but that definitely is something he’s gotten his fair share of bailout whistles over the years so if I was guard I’d warn the refs about that but yeah talking about uh and if you have any rebuttal or any response to that uh let me know but then the the next question I have for you is which matchup are you looking forward to well it was going to be Chase Ross versus John tan because that was going to be the big okay we got our defensive stopper he’s going to be the guy that kind of takes that matchup and again I’m not I know he’s listed as doubtful I don’t know how much stock to put into that because there was a time this year where like on those Game notes the Demaryius Owens was listed as out and he still played so like I guess those aren’t so I don’t know he could still play he could end up still playing um and if that is the case that is definitely the matchup because and I think you could even just throw in then stevon Blackwell like those two against those two is going to be musty TV because it’s two great Defenders it’s a defensive team going against you know two great offensive players and more offensive team that’s ultimately like what a lot of people are going to be watching is those how those two guys can defend John tan and and Blackwell so that’s that’s what would have been now honestly it might be it might be um I mean it would still probably be Stevie versus Blackwell would be my number one but I think an underrated one is just going to be the big man matchup Ben gold against Steven crra as you said crra has played well in this matchup before and like uh two years ago played really well I think I think he played well again last year last year too had like 15 or something and three years ago he played well yeah so it just historically he’s always played well in this matchup now again I know on paper and for people that don’t watch Marquette a ton they probably think Ben gold is just some guy not that good but he has been a a really Stout Defender so far this season and this will definitely be a test but I think he’s been able to hold his own really well and this could be a matchup where he kind of makes a name for himself of okay if he’s able to really stop cwl makes a huge difference in this game like it’ll it’ll start to get some people’s attention and no I’m not I’m not saying like it it’s a guarantee definitely could come out and have a much worse defensive game he’s not some Elite defensive player but he’s been I think better than than people think on defense this year um and so that match will definitely be interesting and and then I mean on the other end too gold the way the Marquette runs their offense and the way teams play defense against Marquette Ben gold is going to get almost guaranteed he’ll get five or six good looks from three almost every game it happens how he shoots on those threes is going to be a a a little bit of a swing in this game because if he goes one for six compared to four for six that’s a nine-point swing and as I said he’s usually been good shooting the ball against good teams in these big games and it’s really a lift for for Marquette cuz he’s going to get looks like again the way their offense runs it usually ends up in some Med gold open threes when teams are you know swarming cam Jones driving to the basket or whatever it cam or Ben gold is gonna get some pick and pop looks get some Corner threes he’ll get looks and how he shoots on those will be a little bit of an X Factor in this game as well so yeah I mean a couple things but there there’s several ways you can go with with favorite match up but you know those are a couple of my favorites yeah and for me I’ll go Blackwell on cam Jones I imagine they’re going to put Blackwell on Jones I think he’s probably one of the better guys you could put on cam Jones because he’s physically solid he’s about the same size as cam so I think that’ll be interesting but I think Wisconsin has a few different bodies they could throw at cam Jones whether it’s tan whether it is Blackwell whether it’s kmond they can give him a few different looks where one guy doesn’t have to be going hard for close to 40 minutes on the one of the best players in the country um so last question here before ask for the prediction is just give me an X Factor for Marquette in this game yeah I mean I already kind of said that I think um Ben Gold’s threes will definitely be an X Factor like how he shoots on his threes because again I think it’s it’s almost a given he’s going to get some good looks and whether those go in or not will kind of give me a sense of like how this game is going to go for us if he if he starts out 0 for three on his open threes I’m going to kind of be like man this might be one of those days but if he starts out two or three two three for three it’ll be like all right here we go and then of course especially early I’ll say like if he hits one just right off the bat I think that’d be huge yeah because again that then changes how they’re playing defense on them and it changes you know it just changes the game a little bit and then of course and and also before I forget I want to make this point I think it goes the same way for Wisconsin too with winter and crowl that if they hit they they also get a lot of open looks they should shoot a higher percentage than they do with all the open looks they get um same thing the defense totally shifts if winter starts off for two Kow starts over for two on their open threes uh then Marquette can just sag off and they’re not even going to look at the hoop that that changes a lot but yeah proceed yeah and one thing overall with this matchup I don’t think either team and I think the numbers back this up I mean I don’t think either team has a great shooting Advantage I mean there I I there’s nothing that lends me to believe that one team is going to outshoot the other now again we don’t know like it’s kind of hard to predict it’s basketball teams can get hot teams can be cold I know a couple years ago when Wisconsin you know came into fiser and one they hit a lot of Threes Chucky heer hit a lot of Threes And it was almost like a tip your cap type of game where it was like hey he’s hitting some tough ones you kind of live with it and so assuming again I’m kind of looking at this matchup assuming the three-point battle is is even or close to even you know what are the other things that’ll come into play and as I said the free throws the turnovers that’s where all that stuff um kind of becomes even bigger is if that if that three-point battle is is pretty much even because if one team shoots redot they’re you know their chances of winning go way up so um that’s kind of a given but again the the the big X Factor in any Marquette game as I kind of already touched on which David Joplin shows up is it going to be the guy that went crazy against Georgia and played great and really lifted them to a win or is it going to be the one that has you know showed up last year against Wisconsin even two years ago against Wisconsin was not great or and was you know bad against Iowa State bad against Purdue bad against Maryland he’s got to be better in these matches ups and um I know there’s going to be a focus trying to take away cam Jones as much as they can um and so Joplin’s going to have to step up and like I kind of think that Cam and tan should be close to even and you know I kind of again I mentioned cam tanre should be close to even I think the shooting should be even golden Crow should be kind of even like it might come down to okay is Joplin better than Blackwell in this game and um something like that if he’s able to outplay their second best player second best scorer whatever okay all of a sudden you know I think Marquette has a leg up if he’s playing like he did last night then Wisconsin’s goingon to have a leg up so that’ll always be kind of a big X Factor um and just in general already touched on it a little bit but the foul trouble is going to be an X Factor for it it goes both ways but I think especially for Marquette given how much how Wisconsin plays it’s a part of the reason I wouldn’t put cam Jones on or i’ try to keep them from defending tan or Blackwell too much keep him from defending tan or Blackwell too much because I think it risk him getting into foul trouble and you really just can’t have that in this game so I would try to keep you know keep Stevie on on Blackwell or tan and then I’d maybe put we haven’t I mean I would maybe put if Chase Ross isn’t playing I’d probably start with Joplin on tan I know that’s not a great matchup because he doesn’t have necessarily the speed to stay with him a terrible match up but it’s it’s like I don’t I don’t know like I don’t really want to put cam on him because I just would be worried that he’s going to maybe put him on him and if he draws a quick foul then you change it up I don’t know um and obviously you don’t really love having your star offensive player taking on a huge defensive assignment because it’s usually gonna affect their offense like ideally in a perfect world Chase Ross plays you have cam on kmet Chase Ross on tan stev on Blackwell um and then Joplin and gold on winter and cwl and I think that matches up pretty well but Chase Ross being out really does screw with this thing a lot and it it changes we’ll get into predictions but it does kind of like that that’s a big differentiator in terms of what my prediction might be for this game if he’s playing or not because he’s the second most important player in this matchup behind cam Jones right and then my X factors for the game I’ll go kman and Steven crra because they’re off to really slow starts offensively this season um and kmond uh had the gamewinner two years ago and I believe he 13 points four assists three rebounds two steals in that game and then he had 21 I believe in the first half last year against marquat and then crra has had success in the in the past he had 15 and eight in 2021 uh seven points four boards seven assists and 22 with a dunk over Oso and then he had 16 and eight last year so both guys are three and0 in the matchup if there’s a game for them to pick things up it’ be this one so th those would be the two x factors for for me and then I I’ll start off with predictions it’s really hard for me to Envision cam Jones going 0 and4 and shakka starting off 0 and4 against Wisconsin especially at home and I know game means a lot to cam I think this is going to go down to the wire and especially without Chase Ross I’m going to give Wisconsin maybe a one or two point win like I I but I think it’s 5050 just about 50-50 whether Ross plays or not I think it’s pretty close to 5050 so that’s my prediction I I think Wisconsin just barely squeezes it out but that that’s my prediction with so with Ross playing my prediction was going to be I know this will sound crazy I really felt good about this game thinking like not that it couldn’t be closer than this but I thought Marquette would win by 15 to 20 points I had I had a number of 8264 I was like I think Marquette could jump on them I think assuming the officials let them play Ross and and um Stevie could do a really good job on the two scorers and I think you know again just Marquette is a really tough formula to beat this year and I think cam Jones will be able to do his thing I really liked it and once Chase Ross you know has this injury all right now I’m kind of feeling like it’ll be a much closer game I’ll still pick Marquette to win and I still am confident they will win but I’m not going to pick it to be as much of a you know blowout I’m gonna go Marquette probably 76 and I’ll go Wisconsin 70 so I think it’ll be more of like a five five to 10 point game compared to a 15 to 20 point game I just think that that injury if he is out will will affect things a lot and just changes how how well I think marquette’s defense can play I mean just point blank he’s a huge part of their defense and when you take him out of the equation when you take him out of the equation especially given who he’d be guarding and given you know who who Wisconsin’s best player is yeah it changes things a lot and I’m crossing my fingers that he’s able to play because I just I’ll be a lot more confident feel a lot more comfortable if he is able to play compared to if they are you know again rolling cam out there on tan or or Joplin or whoever it’ll it’ll make me a little bit a little bit nervous about how this game’s going go um but I do think whether I I do think Marquette is able to get off to a good start in this game um I I think they’ll be able to given that Wisconsin hasn’t played a road game and this will be one of the you know toughest defenses they’ve faced I don’t think they faced a defense that has you know at this level I think Marquette will be able to jump on them a little bit to start and Wisconsin will probably settle in and then start to get going a little bit at some point and make it a game again but I think marquette’s able to to get out to a lead and that’ll be that’ll be hopefully um something that they can carry over into into the rest of the game all right well that sounds good ladies and gentlemen I’ll throw Nathan’s uh uh socials down in the description here but Nathan thank you very much for coming back on the show and looking forward to staying connected moving forward yeah if if Marquette loses this game this might be my last time doing this because I don’t know if I can I don’t know if I can handle 0 for four I can’t handle it I think this would be the third this would be the third so okay yeah you’re right you’re right third so over I mean okay we’ll go one more after this and then if I if they lose this year and next year I’m done I can’t do over for four that’s fair all right have a good one boss
