[Applause] we’re following breaking news in Major League Baseball where the New York Yankees are requiring closer Devin Williams from the Milwaukee Brewers that’s per multiple reports Williams was a two-time All-Star in Milwaukee most recently in 2023 this past season he missed the first four months of the season with a back injury but posted a 1.25 ER with 38 strikeouts in 21 and 2/3 Innings while making 14 saves let’s welcome in CBS sports baseball writer Matt Snider for more on this Matt Yankees fans still stinging after losing Juan stto but does this move help ease some of that pain probably not that much for them look it’s a very good move and if I look right now at the rotation that now has Max freed along with assuming a full season of Garrett Cole now they know what Luis heel can be Clark Schmid in there maybe for a full season this time instead of getting injured that that’s an amazing rotation one of the better rotations in baseball now you add Devon Williams to the back end of that Bullpen alongside Luke Weaver who had such a great year last year I assume Williams will be the closer Weaver will be the setup but either way that’s one of the best eight n punches in all of baseball so their pitching is excellent I just they’s still a void in that lineup with no onto there I think that you could argue only Aaron judge and Sho Otani are more impactful on the offensive end in all of baseball than Aaron judge and they haven’t really replaced him yet uh so let’s see is it Kyle Tucker is it Cody Bellinger and more we’ll see but I think they’ve done a good job so far in picking up the pieces but it’s incomplete because they still need to replace at least some of wano’s production so for the Brewers they still have Freddy Peralta at the top of the rotation and Brandon woodriff is expected to come back where does Nester Cortez figure into things is the other part of this deal you could probably argue he’s our number three after Peralta and Woodruff assuming Woodruff can be like his old self he should be the ace but it’s hard coming off Serge like that so we’ll see uh peralto is inconsistent but his upside is that of an All-Star and an ace Aaron savali is in that rotation Tobias Meers is in that rotation it’s actually a sneaky good rotation for the Brewers not a ton of huge names in there uh but the thing about the Brewers is and this is why they’re able to trade Devin Williams one year before free agency the same way that they traded Josh haer which is what elevated Williams into that closer role it’s their pitching infrastructure is so good they get the most out of pitchers I think this is an excellent landing spot for Nester Cortez a little less Fanfare than in Milwaukee but getting into that infrastructure there I think he’s in line for a great year and the Brewers have a very good rotation we’ll see how they pick up the pieces in the bullpen but Trevor Mill last year when Williams was hurt was one of the better closers in baseball I expect the Brewers to continue to be great at pitching development so this is a very good spot for Cortez so Matt it seems like I me on both sides of this trade you’re thinking that maybe it’s a win-win situation how would you grade this trade yeah I think so I I haven’t had much time to digest it I only heard about it 10 minutes ago but I really really like it for both sides so I’m willing to throw an a at there and maybe be wrong and maybe I’m too aggressive here but I feel like when you’re the Brewers and you know that you want to get rid of Devon Williams one year in front of free agency you know that you can replace him again the same way they replace hater with Williams they’ll have McGill jump in there they know how good they are at that but they also won the division last year and then we’re so close to winning the Wild Card Series in advance in and lost in the last inning with a Pete Alonzo home run they know that they want to win now so they go out and they get somebody who can help them right now and Nester Cortez they go out and get maybe their second basement of the future as part of the deal there so I think that’s a great job and if you’re the Yankees you’re in win now mode of course you were just in the World Series so to go out and get Devon Williams one year away from free agency to team him with Luke Weaver at the back of that Bullpen they can go out and they can replace laor Tes at second base without needing to go to a prospect maybe it’s Nico horer and a trade with the Cubs maybe involving Cody Bellinger maybe they bring glaver Torres back they have options at second base so I think this is excellent for both sides wow Matt throwing out the Easy A’s I wish I had you as a teacher when I was in school Matt damn good job I did think maybe it was a little too lenient but you know what I’m in a good mood it’s Friday whatever let’s give A’s hey it’s we’re hting the holiday season so why not baseball riter Matt Snyder joining us here on HQ to break down the Yankees and Brewers as they made a big deal on Friday Devon Williams becoming the new closer for the Yanke Y in terms of notable odds to win the World Series it is the rainy Champions Dodgers at plus 370 then you have the Yankees next at plus 750 Braves at 8 to1 Mets and Juan SoDo sitting at 9 to one
