how’s it going Yankees fans welcome back for a third episode today Ryan and I we’re cooked we’re exhausted but back on the channel because we have to react to the Yankees signing of course right after I post a rumors update on the YouTube channel and the audio they sign Max freed to an 8-year 218 million deal well we were thinking 7 years after the report like an hour earlier and we were in the 200 million range so we were kind of on on par there but $27 million per season they tack on the eighth extra year to get over the Boston Red Sox who I think were also in the mix there they reportedly in the mix all day long Brian Cashman cancels a TV appearance to go and Hammer out the final uh details of this deal and in the end Yankees add a number two postseason starter a guy that not only is an ace in his own right one of the best Lefty pitchers in the league he is an insurance policy for for gar Cole as gar Cole gets older if if he has some injury issues some inconsistency you know Max fre is going to step in and be that Ace for you and this rotation I think it goes Toe to Toe with any rotation right now um now the Yankees do have an opportunity to sign or rather trade out of their rotation we have Marcus strowman EST Cortez Luis heel as valuable pieces you can even throw Clark Schmidt into the mix there Ron’s contract probably isn’t movable but I will say this Ryan um this gives the Yankees a lot of options what is your initial reaction to the max free deal I’d love to have him $27 million for a player of this magnitude I feel like yeah the years are long but the salary isn’t that bad when you’re looking at how much pitchers are getting paid and what they’re getting paid in the future the price is only going up so I don’t hate this deal for the Yankees at all yeah I would agree uh you know this is a deal where look you’re paying more years than you’re comfortable paying uh but you do have to go sometimes to uncomfortable lengths and especially with the starting pitching Market I think the number one thing that’s identifiable about this group is that you’re going to have to go to uncomfortable lengths to get the player and uh for a team that’s in a contention window getting the player is a success getting a the player is a win it’s what you’re trying to do it’s what the Yankees need to do they made an aggressive bid reportedly the Red Sox offer wasn’t really close to the Yankees offer so they said hey we’re giving you this money we want the player we covet the player I I respect it um and when you’re talk about the quality of pitcher we’re talking about here Alex over the last three seasons among qualified starting pitchers Max Reed is second in ER fourth in FIP fifth in ground ball rate third at home runs allowed per nine has the 10th highest percentage of starts that were qual starts at 60% so 60% of the time six out of 10 times he takes them out he’s giving you six Innings with three earned runs or less uh he’s giving you the second best run prevention in baseball over that stretch the under the underlying metrics are very good is expected FIP uh 3.19 uh it’s the fifth best Mark over that stretch um his skill interactive ra 3.44 the 10th best Mark over that stretch his expected ra you know it’s something that I think better accounts for the fact that um you know uh that he limits damage contact at a high rate there is no one in baseball who has a lower damage rate also known as expected we on base average on contact I know that’s a very big statistic word so I’m just going to call it damage because that’s what essentially is um he had the lowest allowed in the league there is no one who suppresses damage contact better than Max Reed uh he misses enough bats I think there’s just perception that he cannot strike out hitters he Strikes Out hitters at roughly a a slightly better than average clip he walks hitters uh at a below average clip and he prevents home runs this is a guy I think it again it reflects in the FIP FIP is strikeouts walks and home runs it does not take into account your ability to limit damage contact and that’s something he excels in and he’s still fourth in that metric so Alex if he is able to continue to control the Fly ball the the excuse me the Home Run game the walk game and strike out enough batters we’re going to be talking about an elite pitcher uh for the next few seasons obviously you know when these when you look at these contracts you’re worried about the backend years but uh the thing that Jack Curry talked about that I would also say is a big reason why the Yankees I think are comfortable going to that length Max freed is the pitch ability he is has advanced pitch ability he threw seven different pitches last year he threw all seven of his pitches at least a 130 times throughout the season he didn’t throw one single pitch more than 33% of the time Alex three different fast balls two different sliders a curve ball and a change up so again I have my own quarels about paying a pitcher but when it when it comes to the quality of pitcher we’re talking about here very hard to argue that the Yankees didn’t get a Frontline starter and I like that that you called him an ace cuz that’s what he is an ace I I mean eventually gar Cole’s going to hit that wall and you’re going to need someone to rise to the occasion and be that primary guy that’s probably what they’re thinking with Max freeden he’s coming in and by the way guys like keep in mind that Max freed is coming from one of the most difficult divisions in the sport he’s coming from playing for the Braves he’s going to a much weaker American League right now he’s going to come in and probably tear apart the American League for being quite honest and if you if you have to go through the American League um playoffs he’s going to dominate like that’s he’s going to thrive there so I think there’s a lot of factors here that play really well for this and listen what pitcher on a long-term deal doesn’t age poorly like people oh the contract’s going to age poorly tell me what pitcher right now is hitting for I mean these pitchers hitting free agency around 28 29 and they’re getting six sevene deals for legitimate star pitching not many teams have legitimate star pitching especially you know controllable guys it’s really hard to find um it’s rare these days that’s why people are paying for it every single pitcher has a has an injury-prone you know sway like you just never know with these guys I mean for God’s sake G coold pushed less than 100 Innings last year and he’s been an absolute War course you just never know when a guy’s gonna get hurt so you you can’t really base your you know logic around that especially because Fred’s Fred’s pitched 160 plus innings in three of his last four years that’s pretty good so I’ll take that um he is going to generate a lot of ground balls he is going to dominate you know our division um and he’s essential for the playoffs the Yankees saw that they can’t trust Carlos rodon to be their number two they saw in the playoffs all the entire way through he was inconsistent volatile the strikeout sure struck out like like 10 guys then give up six runs you know what I mean like it doesn’t matter if you can’t put away guys when it matters most and as you said the seven different pitches that Max freed has that makes him so dangerous because you can really play to the batter in that instance if guys are struggling against sinkers if they struggling against curveballs or change UPS he can mix these pitches in um and they’re all very effective so you know the versatility the upside the insurance policy for garri Cole um these are all really important things to keep in mind eventually and Ryan if you think about it in a way that’s actually um this kind of makes sense if you look at G Cole’s contract uh you and and then you think about the eight years they’re paying for Max freed here so you know technically eight years from now you know what is it going to be 2032 so you look at 2032 that money G Cole’s already off the books and he’s getting paid G Cole’s getting paid $36 million per season his contract expires in 2028 so that money you know you’re getting into 34 year-old uh Max freed that $27 million just takes over for the $36 million of Garrett Cole and it’s actually um $9 million less so if you look at it that way they’re just swapping contract for contract they’re actually saving 9 mill for Max freed who can still be a quality player in four years um you know maybe not that at the peak of his prime but he he can still be effective so you know I do think the Yankees thought this thir I do think this makes a lot of sense from a financial standpoint think it makes a lot of sense for a team that wants to improve their pitching they’re like you know what wota wants to go to the Mets let’s go get a pitcher that’s going to kick his ass in the playoffs that’s kind of what they thought you know it’s a nice it’s a nice rebound but there’s a lot of work left to do here we’ve been we talked about the rumors about Nolan Aon we don’t love him unless it includes Brendan um Donovan we like Christian Walker we love for the Yankees to find a deal hopefully it’s nothing too expensive pitching is you know being overpriced Walker’s 33 I don’t think the deal would have to be astronomical to get him and he’s a massive upgrade at first base for us then you have to go find out what you’re going to do in the Outfield whether it’s a Cody Bellinger or tasar Hernandez I don’t want to pay satand there but Ryan now that you get the big pitcher what’s next on dock it what’s the next most important thing the Yankees have to address it’s the offense the New York Yankees need to make sure they go out in Secure hitting uh their offense will be a problem if they don’t go out and get uh legit bats I do have some concerns about acquiring Christian Walker that I I just looked at um the Yankees would lose two more of their first six picks they would only have two picks of their first six picks in the 2025 draft but I think kind of have to bite the bullet if you have to go get a first baseman he’s someone you really covet um you can always you know try to maybe move for a younger player or for prospects uh and you know obviously the Yankees drafted a lot of pitchers in the most recent draft class so maybe that uh alleviates the need for um help but it does you know you do start looking a little bit at the well and it’s going to start getting dry very quickly in terms of prospects um the other thing I’d like to mention Alex in terms of first base is that you know we’re talking about being able to package pitchers and go get players uh there is a lot of options in the trade market for first baseman but I think the player that we’re all Holding Out for right now um it’s still Kyle Tucker right like that would obviously be a big offensive get it looks like as it I feel like as the hour goes by you know there’s more and more chatter about potentially moving him from the Astros side of things Jack Curry talked about you know if he was available he’s someone that the Yankees would have conversation with the Astros with but did emphasize the high price point you know again this is a premium player uh the Yankees need premium players on offense I think Walker would fit them like a glove because of his glove and his Bat uh and we’re talking about Max freed now you know you want to show up your infield defense I would love to see Walker paired with an infielder we talked about Brenan Donovan could perhaps you could could you perhaps entice the St Louis Cardinals with a controllable starting pitcher then you maybe look at a guy like Cody Bellinger and say hey eat half of his salary we’ll bring we have no problem importing him onto the team I don’t know uh if Marcus strowman’s going to get moved but I feel like the pitching Market is indicated that there may be a team willing to take on Marcus strowman and some not all but some of his money uh because he is still a capable Major League starting pitcher and you know teams are desperate for pitching right now uh we’ve seen the prices up on pitchers across the board again we just paid 8 years for Max freed God knows what Corbin Burns is about to get no and you know you look at the other deals again I I I compare it to Frankie Monas two years $34 million this is a pitch who had a 48 erra and a pitch who hasn’t proved to be able to be healthy enough to give you 180 190 Innings a year so you know I I think the next step for the Yankees is Shoring up the offense maybe looking at some Bullpen arms they went with Chris Martin today Aaron Boone was waxing poetic about tenner Scott which I found super interesting you rarely hear a manager just randomly go off about a free agent pitcher I don’t know if that indicates that there’s some smoke there I doubt the Inc would be the top bids for Tanner Scott but you know you never know maybe his Market crators a little bit Alex I just feel like right now now you have Max Reed and this is maybe again if your kids listening to this just for this portion maybe tune out a little bit I’m not dropping a curse word but the analogy you have the pitching Market buy their balls you have it buy its balls uh and you can control it you control the market by its balls you just do right you have a young pitcher in Clark Schmid what you want a oneye guy here’s Essa Cortez give us one year of your one of your bats what’s that you want Clark Schmid you know you got to give us something you want Luis heel he’s a rookie of the year winner you’re going to have to give us something to get him you’re going have to give to get today’s price yesterday’s price is not today’s price the Yankees need to be Stern and firm and patient when it comes to dealing one of their starting pitchers don’t need to rush a deal you don’t need a deal to materialize on December uh you know 12th Alex and I will have no problem waiting until February 1st if it means you get the best value possible on a hitter control the market all these cheap teams that can’t afford these pitchers you’ve got to buy and also another thing the Boston Reds Alex if I’m not mistaken weren the Boston Red Sox supposed to spend some serious coin this year am I not Mist that’s strike out on soda didn’t even come close and we just took their stop pitching Target so who’s who are they getting Nathan yaldi welcome back to Boston my friends but that’s that I’m using them as example obviously I don’t like them but the other example is just that’s a team that maybe is isn’t comfortable swimming in those Waters there are so many teams with less money than the Red Sox who are not going to be comfortable swimming in these Waters you mean to tell me that a team like the Texas Rangers who were in on free but didn’t have the finances for it what are they going to do they’re going to have to go get pitching Nathaniel low uh I’m not hey you want n Cortez let’s ask for Nate low at first I know it’s a lot and I know they’re not going to do it but ask for him ask for the moon for the from these teams and force them to overpay you in the p in the trade market for Quality pitching yeah I mean I think I think you’re absolutely right you have to ask for the Moon from these teams and like you’re saying the Yankees I mean not only do you get tons of value we just broke down the value get from Max fre but also like you said they have this pitching Market you know at their disposal they have all these controllable arms they have you know heel they have Clark Schmidt they have onee rentals they have Innings eaters they have whatever you need so you know One-Stop shop if you looking for a pitcher um at a certain price point that you don’t want to pay and the Yankees have value there so we’ll see how they kind of operate from their starting rotation to reinforce other positions but this was a good step I like this move I mean I liked it yesterday I liked it today I still like it now and I like it even more after kind of thinking through the additional parts of this now obviously no deferred money no opt outs it doesn’t matter you know those things are overplayed to a degree unless it’s like really old players but you know I do think this next step here you said it best it’s time to upgrade the offense they will the Yankees have positioned them themselves really nicely if think about it this you know Ryan this is the funniest thing I got two things to say and I’ll wrap this up the first thing is they still have $570 million $565 million to spend theoretically because they were going to spend $760 on juo they got $560 million they still haven’t spent um over the course of however many years they want to spend obviously it’s more of a year bye basis than a to kind of accumulated number but pretty awesome to have that much money s your and the last thing I’ll say is guys have a moment of gratitude for the fact that the Yankees actually spend money you we could be talking about the freaking Red Sox right now or the Athletics or some horrible naan nooli off the board he’s back to Texas so again yesterday’s price is not today’s price yesterday’s price is not today’s price folks I want a robbery I want you to I want you to grab a team by the balls and them you’re giving me one of your best hitters for a pitcher who isn’t that good I’m sorry I apologize I Little Billy Bean for Moneyball action right now we we want we want to be taking players but like I mean you’re saying a best man like this is a advantageous spot for the Yankees we are in a good position we spend money like we could not be in a spot like this we could be talking about oh we we lost Bon stto we’re not being we’re not going to replace him but the Yankees are doing for step by step replacing that production replacing what we need to reinforce for this team we talked about earlier this is a weak American League the Yankees can Coast through the American League get to the World Series and just get lucky just get lucky compete get lucky win some games you never know what happens so step by step we got you guys covered here Fireside Yankees triple upload day Ryan give yourself a round of applause definitely a grinder but we got you guys covered with all the news day by day hour
