Nolan Arenado might be traded by the end of the week as a new suitor emerges – the Houston Astros. The Astros recently traded star outfielder Kyle Tucker to the rival Chicago Cubs as it looks like the Cardinals continue to fall behind in the division rankings. How do they bounce back by acquiring the right pieces this offseason and prepare for their youth movement?

so much for the National League central being passive the St Louis Cardinals are the ones sitting on their hands while the Chicago Cubs are going out trading for a top 10 player in baseball the Brewers are restructuring the roster are going to contend again as usual the Pirates and reds are active and looking to be better next year man what are the St Louis Cardinals doing is this the right thing how competitive will the NL Central be what does this mean for the long-term Outlook of NL Central and the Cardinals uh specifically within it um we’ll also talk about what they could be doing soon probably what the next move is which is a Nolan erado trade and a new Suitor who has emerged in the mix we’re going to talk about all this and more in this episode of Deon the cards hey welcome back to deal the cards I’m Josh this is Sandy or uh St Louis Cardinals podcast uh go live twice a week over here on YouTube or on all audio platforms where you can find us we’re presented by through four sports cards and collectibles and we’d love to tell them tell you more about them later um and we’re missing Andrew today but he’s uh over at 314 sports cards actually um figuring out the set up for our charity live stream this Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 10: p.m. we’re going to be hosting it live at 314 with Bernie micholas and so we’d love to see as many of you who are in the St Louis area who want to show up and come live as possible um we’ll have a live audience uh options you can come hang out with us ask questions engage in the conversation um with some of our guests that are coming I’m trying to think the ones who are all publicly confirmed right now Jeff Jones Kareem will jump on with us brimsley will leech um I think there’s some others that are publicly confirmed and we’ll have a full lineup uh debut here soon um so yeah we’d love if you to join us in person but you can also obviously join us via stream which we’ll have that going do a bunch of giveaways throughout the night and then the whole point is we’re raising money for big leag impact and we’d love if you could donate to that as well and there we’ll have an option where if you’re watching on stream where you can do donations that ask certain questions to our guests or Bernie or us throughout the night so we hope you join us for that um but before we jump in hey it’s it’s a Sunday big football day and we have a new partner an underdog fantasy and we’d love to tell you about them and also give you some of our picks for today and uh give you an opportunity to join us in some of that so proud to be partnering with under Underdog Sports our favorite place to play Fantasy games you got to check out pick them it’s an easy way to play as you’ve never done before you pick two or eight different stats from different players and you choose whether they’re going to go higher or lower you can earn up to 20 times your money if you go five for five if it sounds like fun you can use our code cards and get a free pick and a firsttime bonus match up to $1,000 so again you get a free pick which basically there’s no risk in that get your money back if you get it wrong but then you can also get extra money on top of your firsttime deposit with this code as well for cards um in the top left corner here and there’s a bunch of really interesting games this afternoon and for Monday night and so we want to share a couple picks that you think we think you could use for your first time One S you go first because I’ve been kind of cold lately well you know NFL is not uh not my best but I’m also not a Bears fan like you so maybe I’m more qualified for this but uh today I’m going with Chris Boswell so I’m I’m focused on the afternoon games I know Josh has some Monday night picks for you um but these start in just an hour so if you want to use that promo code cards keep going right away I’ve got Chris Boswell higher than one and a half field goals he’s kicked two field goals in almost every game this year he’s a leading fantasy kicker uh he’s been Nails all year he doesn’t miss he’s kicked two field goals in each of his last three games so I really feel good about that and then Josh Allen higher than 259 passing yards I think it’s going to be a shootout today in Detroit the bills offense is hot I know they lost last week uh but they played a heck of a game against the Rams and uh Josh Allen himself put up 52 fantasy points saved me in one of my leagues made sure I made the playoffs which was very nice uh the Detroit Lions who they’re going against have a ton of injuries on defense secondaries and shambles uh so I feel good about Josh Allen having a great game so again that’s Chris Boswell higher than one and a half field goals and Josh Allen higher than 259 passing yards I love both of those picks and so if you’re doing pick them I would agree with Sandy on those I got a couple Monday night related ones too especially if you’re watching later um Bears defense has been good all year but since they fired eflu has actually gone downhill and so I would be taking the Vikings passing uh like basically their passing game against the Bears tomorrow so I have uh you I’m again I I don’t I wouldn’t do I don’t know if i’ do all these at once but four picks I think make a ton of sense for this game because the Vikings probably to score a lot of points the Bears have to try and catch up over or higher sorry on K Williams 218 passing yards he’s gone higher on that a bunch this year and if they’re down he’s going to pass for more than that Justin Jefferson higher than six and a half receptions Jordan Addison higher than three and a half receptions Sam darnold higher than 2 148 passing yards I think all those are great picks for Monday night if you combine them with sandies again duplicates your value there um so yeah go use those Pi those pick thems for uh today’s games and let us know how you do so okay let’s let’s jump into the real Cardinal talk here no more football we’re baseball here ah Kyle Tucker man goes to the Chicago Cubs for ESO parades uh cam Smith the Cubs first round pick for this past year and he’s a topped 100 Prospect all baseball really high upside guy and then Hayden wowski or something like that I forget his last name right now also sorry y’ I I know last week or last episode my voice was not great and it’s gotten worse this past one so try hang in there but um Sandy you saw that trade go down what were your immediate thoughts it stinks you know anytime a divisional rival especially a rival like the Cubs for the Cardinals brings in a a superstar I mean there’s no there’s no way around it Kyle Tucker’s one of the best players in the league he’s been one of the best players in the league for a few years now anytime a team that you don’t like brings in a player like that it just stinks I’m sure this is the way a lot of cubs fans felt when the Cardinals brought in Paul gold Schmid when the Cardinals brought in Nolan arado uh this is the caliber of player they’re getting but unlike Goldie and arado uh Tucker’s very young you know um The only positive here and we’ve already talked about this is that Tucker has one year of control left and I feel like he’s gonna test the open market uh maybe the Cubs traded him knowing they could ink an extension if the Cubs sign an extension this gets way worse for the Cardinals because that means Tucker is here to stay for the next 10 plus years and all of a I mean like Tucker’s on a hall of he’s one of the best players in baseball it means we’re talking about him having a legacy in Chicago none of us want that uh it would just stink so hopefully none of that happens totally agree there I feel like if they lose him um after the season and assuming they don’t like go on some crazy run and win the World Series or something like that um even if they like get to the World Series or LCS I mean it’ still be a lot to pay for a one season a guy but it would make it a lot more worth it for them um playoff or something and lose him in free agency oh my gosh if they missed the playoffs they lose in free agency um you know that I I couldn’t figure out a way to share it on Twitter in a way that made s that I knew people wouldn’t understand what I meant but do you remember um that Patrick wisdom pinch hit um there’s two it was there was a runaround base they were down one nothing as the Cardinals this year and he hit a one got knocked down by the win the warning track I wanted to say something to the effect of the Kyle Tucker trade by the time the offseason comes around in next year and it’s like Cubs fans going W and then it dies to the warri track CU he goes and signs in La I was like that’s how I hope this is going to turn out that was the greatest thing ever oh my gosh I’m really hopeful that’s how too that that should so that’s how it feels right now where it’s like Cubs you own you own the off season right now that’s fine I just really hope you’re looking like uh the Yankees next off season where then you’re trying to convince everyone that Kyle Tucker wasn’t actually that good because he signed somewhere else regardless though um I mean this is this is I I got to give c credit to the Cubs front office here part of the reason they traded for esok perade is at this deadline and a lot of people were kind of hinting at this was they saw an opportunity here to get a valuable asset that they could use for the future but they could also flip and people some people are criticizing them for giving up Christopher Morell at the time but then you go and look at some of the paper trail of reporting here uh Sandy guess who was finished second in the eso parade uh sweep Stakes at the deadline this year what the Astros so the Cubs got him and then used him as a piece to the team that wanted him badly this off seon or this deadline to go get that Superstar player when you became available um they’ve also built up a farm system in such a way and been careful with it to the annoy annoyment annoyment uh to the frustration of cubs fans but now they have a piece like cam Smith where they give him up and they still have a strong farm system and have Kyle Tucker and now you go look at all the trade rumors and they’re in on Lou C IO they’re in on Jesus sardo I’m sure they’re potentially in on some other free agents Cubs have done a really solid job of rebuilding organization after being in a kind of similar State as the Cardinals were or Cardinals are now a few years ago where they in their system like they just had like eight or nine different prospects boom yeah but then I think like if you go back to what is it 20202 when uh yeah I think it was 2022 when the Cub sold and they moved Bryant and Rizzo and bz all at the deadline and they are all kind of depre I mean bz they actually got a good return for they got P PCA that that was that was kind of a lucky lottery like I don’t think people thought PCA was gonna be a top 10 Prospect in baseball when that happened I think I think people he was a top 100 I believe at that time but czy they got that for rental bias so like the the Mets overpaid but like it’s interesting because it’s like okay you had this like clearly a aging core the team was going in the wrong direction Theo I think Theo left by then like just there was a lot of weird things and they hit the reset button and they were kind of middling the past few years kind of like what the Cardinals may end up doing here where they’re not going to be bad but they’re also not going to be good um and they can your the young Corp can maybe convince you they’re doing something I think there’s a like an interesting parallel that Cardinal fan should look at how the cubsy years have gone over the last few years of like what a good reset could look like for St Louis where Heim Bloon works his magic like he did in Boston and turns his farm system into a Powerhouse and then what’s happening with Boston in this off season 2 is they just went out and got gar crochet in a very similar way where they gave up a hall but they still have plenty of Prospect Capital to go to add to their major league roster or to make additional moves I think part of the like part of building up this Player Development system and this farm system of the Cardinals is not just hey they need to litter their lineup with a bunch of young players yes that’s part of it but it’s also so that once you have a young core you can also go and send your 2026 first round pick that’s people are high on to go get whatever that trendy player is out in the trade market that has multiple years of control or is a one-year rental or something like that to build on your roster yeah that’s true I think this is an interesting parallel to look look at but that’s the only optimistic lens they can look for the Cardinals perspective otherwise it’s frustrating um yeah just you never want the C to be good it’s it’s fun to beat them it’s not fun when they’re winning and they look like the team that’s potentially going to rule the NL Central this year um and potentially for some more years to come obviously the Brewers on the ascent or not on the ascent the Brewers are always figuring out a way to stay up there they’re the Brewers yeah um I mean used to be yeah and I mean frankly the Pirates and reds both have potential to ascend like I’ve always Pro something to me I’ve said said this before I’m not going to buy either of them I’m not going to buy stock in either organization until they actually win something how how many how many like revamped red scores have we seen since 2013 I feel like they they were cooking in 2013 and then they tore that down and then they really thought they were cooking in 2020 and they tore that down and I think they thought they were cooking before that too and they certainly thought they were cooking last year and you know another nightmare season for them where they go from a winning record and ride on the cusp of the playoffs to finishing fourth in the division I just until I see something from them and the Pirates especially the Pirates think they’re cooking at the 2016 deadline they give up everything for Chris Archer that goes terribly they think they’re cooking again a few years ago I until I see something from either of them I’m never gonna buy any offseason hype yeah true um especially with how ownership Works in both spaces I mean the Reds have been aggressive at times but they still aren’t going to spend the levels even the Cardinals have before and then the Pirates like there’s already talk that they might move Mitch Keller or Terry Jones for the sake of like making sure the payroll doesn’t go up super high and and to get uncontrollable bats but still it’s like oh my gosh crazy already um yes please please actually make a stupid decision please but I would say the Pirates front office is a like it’s a better group than it’s been in the past and then the Reds did just add Terry Fran cona now like you I need to see it from both organizations first but I think the problem is if you’re like kind of ranking tiers the NL Central right now it’s the Brewers and the Cubs and then the Reds Pirates and Cardinals and whatever you want to throw them as like two different tiers and you can make the argument that the Pirates or Reds or both will finish above the Cardinals next year and the Cardinals could also finish above those two sure the Cardinals could finish above the Cubs are Brewers but like that’s an unlikely scenario um and also like some of it’s like it’s just the frustrating part of how things are working right now that it’s like okay the Cardinals are taking a step back and I think most of us kind of understand that they’re why they’re doing that it’s just frustrating at the same time the Cubs are ascending um but in some ways like like Cardinals aren’t probably like doesn’t did would have made sense to the Cardinals go at Kyle Tucker like not really so it’s like it’s not like they lost out on anything it’s just frustrating to see yeah it would have been really funny if because Cubs Twitter was so convinced for three days before it that he was gonna be a cub which they’re right but like it’ been really funny if the Yankee swooped in last second and pulled it off and awes and the Cubs another off season you mentioned Cubs Twitter seeing them go ballistic was the worst part of the whole thing you know sidebar real we mentioned him earlier Kareem’s in the chat maybe he can explain it to me what’s the deal with people thinking Christopher Morell is anything special this year he put up an 80 Ops plus he’s got 100 Ops Plus for his career in Four Seasons I do not get it I remember he came up he was kind of a fun rookie the year he came up but there were a bunch of good rookies in the NL uh it was the Brenan Donovan rookie year when Brennan Donovan was far better and Morell after like he had no Prospect pedigree to be honest I just I don’t understand it I I’ve never understood why Cubs fans saw him as this budding Superstar I know he had a good year in 2023 um 122 Ops plus but he’s never come within 20 points of that in another year in his career and in the two years since then he or in the year since then like yeah he was terrible uh 90 Ops Plus and after the trade to Tampa in 50 games 57 Ops plus really fell off a cliff production wise I will never understand why everyone I know Cody mentions that Savant has a bunch of red yeah whatever um can’t even be a League average hitter in his first three years so I just don’t understand and defensively he’s so limited I do not understand why they saw him as this budding Superstar I I don’t I don’t get it I mean got yeah I mean I don’t know he moral is probably one of those players that if the Cardinals had him all Cardinal fans would have been freaking out in similar ways where it’s like best I mean the the top tier percentile outcomes for Morel is that he’s a star because of all these underlying reasons where it’s like he’s got all the tools to pull it off it’s just can’t he actually put it together um it’s almost like a less proven version of what Lars nupar is where it’s like nar’s at least had stretches I mean I mean moral has had stretches where he’s been really good too but new one stretch yeah so like I I think there’s a and he’s also not anything near what Nar is defensively and it’s not like Nar is that crazy good either um but anyways I think it’s just it’s I mean it’s what FR offes dream of right you want a player like that because if you’re the one to figure them out this guy’s gonna be a star but um anyways I made a lot of sense for the cardal or the Cubs to move him for morale and now or for moral for Paredes and now they’re sitting with Kyle Tucker so good for the Cubs there um Cardinals should just learn to be better so we’re in we’re going to bank on that but um before we keep going we’d like to thank our presenting sponsor of the podcast is 34 sports cards and collectibles they’re located at 9640 all of Boulevard and allette open 10 to 5 Monday think we all do and then again we talked about Underdog off the top but use our code cards to save or to get a firsttime free uh pick them on Underdog fantasy we just pick higher lower on different stats um and and then you can get a firsttime deposit bonus of up to $1,000 if you use R code cards to play free fantasy sports with Underdog um so yeah let’s continue to um talk a little bit NL Central moves we’re going to get to the nor orado Houston stuff in just a moment here um but I think it’s worth a late reaction from us about the Devon Williams trade um I mean initially when it went down I was like yeah I laughed a little bit because I feel like I got a lot of heat from people for saying there’s a world where you hold on to Ryan Hesley and then the trade goes through and all these people are like hold on to Ryan Hesley and I’m like hm okay sorry maybe it makes a little sense you know I’m I’m not to toot my own horn here like some other people do sometimes that’s an inside joke for for you and Andrew but um but czy I anyways I I was just like guy I mean and I was the only person saying it obviously but they’re I’m just like there’s a world here where the offers aren’t great and the I’m still fully of the opinion that Ryan Hy should be traded if you can get the right offer it’s also hard to compare it’s a little bit apples to oranges because the Brewers are trying to contend and you would assume the Cardinals maybe want they probably want Major League ready stuff but not necessar Cortez Major League ready more young Talent um but I still think value for Value wise I would have thought Devon Williams gets you a little bit more at least um I think you could argue that Ryan Hesley is still a more valuable trade piece any anyways because he’s coming off a full healthy season dominant season while um de Williams had a back injury last year so I think there’s some reasons to believe maybe the Yankees got a little bit better of a deal on him and obviously the Dodgers were interested Dev Williams and I’m guessing the Phillies probably were too so maybe those teams pivot to Ryan Hesley um but I guess in a vacuum Sandy when you saw that trade did you like it for the Brewers or did it make you think hold on to Hy more and then like kind of what do you think this means for Ryan Hy’s trade market could you time my connection’s like not uh oh oh are you still there all right if you’re in the chat let us know if you can hear Sandy or me mine seems fine for my end but maybe I’m the one who’s bugging out here um I’m just going to assume I’m not the one bugging out unless the chat says it is me um and I’m going to keep going and talking here um until we get Sandy back um so here’s here’s a good question from Kareem uh would you trade Hesley okay so it is Sandy um I’ll keep going and if we get Sandy back then we’ll bring him back in but would you trade Hesley for two 10 to 15 rck prospects in a system I think that’s what’s realistic at this point see here’s what I think it’s fair to disagree I’m not saying if someone has a different opinion that’s wrong I think if that’s if that’s the market I’m holding Hesley for now um and I’m seeing what happens at the deadline I’m waiting to see if because I think here’s an EV vacuum the argument for why a team potentially wouldn’t be Allin on Ryan Hy right now is that they see uh well there’s man I’m thinking trying to remember how which relievers are available right now outside of Scott or Stott um and obviously he’s the high end of a free agent but a team could build a bullpen like the Cardinals did last year and take a bunch of Dart Dart throws and figure it out from April to July and if they’re in the race then go after oryan Hy when they know they need him rather than overpay not overpay but pay a significant price now to get him if that’s the going rate I would rather hold on to him till the deadline see if I can get more than that and if I can’t and he’s healthy then you say okay do we take that or is the comp pick more valuable um there’s also the EXT there’s the idea of an extension potentially right um again I would love the world where they make him a starter I don’t think they’re doing that anymore I think there’s no I don’t think you have to trade it right now the point for me so um Sandy or Kareem I like that comparison there I think that makes a lot of sense or like I like that as like the barometer oh he’s back sorry all good I’m on my hot spot now so we’ll see how this goes it’s not it’s not incredible but it’s well yeah it’s not great you might uh you might just you might need to go back to the might need to just try the Wi-Fi again it’s it’s pretty bad um yeah I can uh oh Andrew in whoa he’s coming to save the day man look at this I’m pinching Sandy Sandy Doctor Strange portal right here how’s it going I was um I was testing some of the tech but I I saw that Sandy was broke so I was like chat if you’ve seen endgame before what happened there is I was getting beat the crap out of by Thanos says cap oh there he is and Thanos is in the connection and then Doctor Strange brought in Andrew and Iron Man here is back and ready to go sorry for the too much Marvel talk there but big Marvel guy we back okay here please do crazy is Lucas I’m not even like at my apartment in college I’m at home in St Louis right now internet s you’re gonna make Wi-Fi 314 bugout on Thursday just because you’re there please please don’t do that hey uh real quick I because I just kind of riffed on my own for a second um what Kem BR I think this is a good barometer say Hy all you can get right now for him is two 10 to 15 ranked prospects in a system yeah okay we’re all I think I would say no because I think you’re getting better than that at the deadline and on that note I’m gonna go continue packing all my stuff away because he’s back wow the quickest Cameo on the podcast ever but I think you make a good point there and I think I would say no because that’s something I can live without you know like if you’re getting two guys in the 10 to 15 range of somebody else’s system or maybe like the 8 to 12 range even like neither of those guys are probably like super impact prospects right now it’s not like you’re passing up on a top hundred guy and so if Hy’s value craters this season and you have to trade him at the deadline if it’s like oh no I’m so mad that we didn’t get this like Gordon grao type you know I’m not going to be flipping out about that whereas if you pass on some Colton Bowser type bat for Hesley then it’d be like oh yeah you should have just cut your losses and made the trade but that’s probably not the range the Cardinals room right now so I’d be fine holding him to the deadline and there’s still there’s probably a greater than 50% chance the return is either that good or better at the deadline yeah it feels like what’s the risk reward here right like if that’s what you’re getting the risk of getting nothing it’s not CRA like it’s not crazy not to get that like to for your farm system to lack those two prospects probably now this is all rankings like those guys couldn’t turning into stars and if Bloom knows that right and he’s like hm I mean they’re ranked 12 to 15 by Baseball America it’s like whatever it’s Baseball America they’re great but it’s like not it’s not the gospel it’s not like yeah exactly oh this guy’s not gonna be any good because he’s 12 ranked it’s like if they think they’re great then pull the deal off that makes us all annoyed now because they’re stars in two years like you always leave that caveat but I also think too it’s like okay what’s the risk reward here the risk reward of hle is okay you miss out on a okay package and the risk is you get quote unquote nothing or you have to comp offer him which is still a draft pick and I trust this Randy Flores and Heim Bloom blood front office to use a draft pick like that next year um and to continue to rebuild this farm system the reward is you get an absolute haul for him at the deadline and haul like as in probably at least 30 40 25 to 40% more value um than what that is right now I think that’s worth waiting for and then but then you compare it to other situations it’s like Eric fetty what’s the risk reward the risk is I think his trade values that like Ryan Hy I see a world where his trade value goes up Eric fety that I mean I don’t see it it’s it’s right now or never for what he’s what he’s gonna get you and the market good for starters right now yeah I guess we’re not seeing starters like traded right now but the free agent Market’s really great and that at least gives you a barometer as to how uh trade Target starters will be valued yeah and Fett’s a really unique case where he doesn’t make a lot of money is a veteran starter middle of the rotation where like the guys who are making as much money as him that are being tradeable right now are probably like like the G crochet types where they’re in their multiple years of arbitration their Frontline starters they’re going to cost even more than Eric Vetti um or if they’re in his if Eric fety skill range they’re probably younger with more control and so they probably also cost more Eric fety is still going to get you a lot of trade I can see like him being a very unique Target for a certain team um and I was listening to MLB trade rumors they did a podcast and they brought up a really good point of like every offseason is also dictated by circumstances and so like Ryan Hy’s trade market right now is diluted by the fact that there are so many relievers out there Eric fetty’s trade value should be skyrocketing because of the fact that there are so many different types of there’s everyone needs pitching and the pitching just keeps getting more and more expensive so I Cardinals need to take advantage of where they have a market efficiency right here they have someone where they could sell high on and then hold on the other areas well 100% And also I just think we’re undervaluing how good of a season fetty just had like Len these two players and tell me which one you think is fety and which one you think is Garrett crochet okay oh yeah 358 ER 150 Innings pitched 32 starts made versus 330 ER 180 Innings pitched 31 games started they both pitched the whole season but someone had an erra three points lower and gave you an extra 30 Innings oh that was fatty right yeah the fact that g crochet just got an absolute Hall yeah the strikeout rate’s really nice but fedy prevented runs at a higher rate you know maybe it’s not quite as sustainable as a guy like crochet who strikes everybody out but look at the fact that crochet was making three inning starts by the end of the year and fedy was still reliably going into the six fetty averaged about six Innings a start last year that’s huge for teams wait so you’re saying the Cardinal should get C teal for Eric fetty is what you’re saying what if the Cardinal sent Eric Fetti to the white socks for Kyle teal I’m just kidding uh but there’s some context though croch croch is younger has more control and again he has dominant strikeout to walk I that there is out there and also like cont pitching Less in the second half that was like mostly a him decision and not like oh his arm is dying he was like you’re not going to extend me and you suck I’m not throwing a bunch of innings for you down the stretch when it doesn’t anything for me that’s so fair so all all I want to put out there is that fetty’s a really valuable player yes who last year had a really really good year and it probably placed him within the most Val 15 starters in baseball if you look at his whole year a guy who had an RA of 3.3 so that’s you know probably top 10% in the league uh and then also was healthy all year didn’t miss a start and averaged six Innings a start like that’s wildly valuable and so I think there there are gonna be 20 plus teams that think yeah that guy make our team a lot better right now yeah and then the play even like like that’s a high end of him F he’s awesome and he’s like yeah better than Neer Cor say the brous guy but like okay FIP ER last year he’s in the top 25 I think in both of them easily he’s like top 50 in Sierra and even if you’re like trying to find even if you’re just trying to find any stat to knock on Eric fedy is last year which also you do have to look at him as a different pitcher last year than years before because he’s just a different guy he transformed his repertoire when he was in the kbo he is a different pitcher now um he had I think three above or plus pitches last year in terms of like run value um with his fast ball curveball and or sweeper anyways he’s he’s a good pitcher um but even if you want to look at him as like the 50th best pitcher in baseball it’s like okay so then he’s a highend number three right like you have 30 rotations yeah um he’s at least a highend three at that point so yeah Eric fed’s a valuable piece that the Cardinal should be selling on and it seems like there may be listening on him now so hopefully that’s helpful um uh this a good question from Cody I don’t know who would um I don’t know who would fetch more fatti or Lardo I’m going to guess probably Bardo um because you s yeah just because the age but also the injury history from Lardo is scary you know what you’re getting from Fetti and you might be able to extend him too yeah for sure and then a team acquiring him right now can also give him a comp a comp or uh keep saying comp pick give him a qualifying offer to get a compensation pick if they want to as well so um there’s a lot of reasons to pull the trigger if you’re an opposing team right now so um also someone else that I’m kind of being convinced is a little bit of a market um in or market efficiency for a team out there and I think other major league clubs are as well is caral third basan Nolan orado who I think if you’re a Cardinal fan right now most people are pretty down on him a lot of people think he’s like I’ve seen stuff at times people say like he’s he’s he’s a negative he the team will be better with him off it say what you want about the off the field stuff locker room stuff like people have their own opinions of it and his his posture and his approach to the game sometimes and his intensity like that’s one thing but as a player on the field no Nado was still an over three win player last year he’s worth like 25 26 million um in war last year like he’s not not a bad player he’s paid more than he should be right now but when you factor in that the Rockies are kicking in 5 million the next two years so 5 million 2025 and 2026 you back in the fact that the Cardinal are going to and this is not my opinion they are going to kick in money on his contract I don’t know how much and that will matter how much they get back in return but they are going to also kick in money his deal goes from 3 years 74 million to 3 years 64 million with the Rockies money and if the Cardinals kick in 10 million that’s three years 54 million if they kick in 15 million which I think is probably the minimum they’ll kick in it’s three years 49 million for him as a three- win player like again I’m not talking about him as like an incredible asset but like 16 million a year for Nolan orado right now if you hit the open market I think that’s a that’s he probably gets more than that on a short-term deal right now yeah I think this Houston stuff makes a ton of sense where for them they look at it we can get bregman six seven years for double what we’d have to give ol Nado at least or least yeah or we get a shorter term contract on a guy that makes a lot less than him right now and he could get uh he could bounce back and be not Primal orado but closer to that or if Nolan ronado bounces back even halfway to what he was in 2022 and has a 120 WRC plus with the defense he plays at third base that’s a five- win player maybe more maybe a six you know and like all of a sudden especially in today’s age of like inflated contracts a guy who let’s just be conservative and say five win a five win player is worth at least $26 million and oh wait that’s more than that because he’s worth He was worth like 24 million as a three- win player so that’s it’s close to 40 if you’re just talking about war per dollar now I don’t know how I feel about that exactly I still am not sure that you know one war player is an 8 million player or anything like that uh I don’t know if it’s fair to just convert that but I’ll say this when you again think about the Cardinals and Rockies you know cutting into this you could be paying Nolan Nolan arnado less than $20 million for a five win season like that’s incredibly Val valuable and I think most people would take that and then there’s a bunch of comment the chat right now from Kareem Joseph and Cody of like Houston’s a perfect ballpark for someone love the Crawford boxes which is that’s why ESO Paredes is also a great fit in Houston as he’s an extreme pole hitter um you put both of those guys in a line up with KY Tucker or not KY Tucker um with yordon Alvarez and Jose Altuve like that that Astros line could be pretty good especially at home um like no makes a lot of sense in somewhere like Houston um and then also like compare him to Alex bregman right now for any team the risk of Alex bregman is you give that guy seven years and a more money well yeah $230 million something like that and the risk is that he bottoms out and then you’ve got this huge contract over time that you’ve got to like sit with um which again he was a 118 WRC or Ops plus guy last year but the year before that he was a uh 122 and the year before that 13 so he’s been on a steady decline he was a gold Glover this year so his his glove is still there but in the same way that Nolan Nado has been going down year toe right now so has Alex bregman and so the upside with Alex bregman I would argue is higher performance-wise but it comes at a significantly higher cost the upside with orado is that he could be like kind of what Alex bregman was this past year but at a way cheaper price and then if he’s bad the the like um the risk and the financial cost of that is not going to bury you as an organization and so that’s where I think no one makes a lot of sense for these teams that for as much as we’ve talked about there’s not like everyone needs pitching and then just have to start and they’re overpaying for it in a similar way there’s not a lot of like these top tier well I don’t know if I call let’s not say a top tier bat but like impact bats sure to go around either and so I think teams going have to get creative with stuff like that so I actually think n orado especially the Cardinals kicking the kind of money that they should can get you something of of decent value in return again we’re talking probably less than Eric fedy or Ryan Hesley oh yeah probably talking less than both those guys here but I think he’s a guy that’s he’s not some people are like he’s not gonna get you anything you just got to get rid of him and it’s like oh no you should be trying to get a real real return here because I think you can um and I think he provides value to other clubs so I actually think the Cardinals have a it’s hard to say who has leverage here because no one has the no trade clause but I think there’s enough teams that he’s interested in going to that are going to be interested in him that the Cardinals can actually get something here well there’s significant overlap between the list of teams that would be interested in a player like him and the list of teams he wants to go to because no one wants to win want to go to a team that’s capable of paying him a lot of money uh because the contract is still like sizable you know we’re not talking about Eric fetty’s seven and a half million uh and so most of those teams are going to match up which is really nice because that are adding piece like Nolan arado are trying to strengthen an already strong lineup they’re trying to augment a roster that’s already playoff worthy so that’s really good for us I I think with noan ronado I think the thing is there’s a people’s opinion of him is colored really strangely by the big deal he received from the Rockies like Nolan arado got a a big extension from the Rockies around the same time as some other people signed Mega deals but what people don’t know is that his contract was quite a bit smaller than some of the other big deals being signed and the Rockies took on so much of the payment when he was traded to the Cardinals that he really isn’t being paid the way even like like he’s definitely not being paid the way an Anthony randone is being paid for example uh but he’s not even being paid like Bryce Harper’s being paid because you’re gonna have three teams splitting the bill for this so it’s really not that hard to take him on and I think you’re right I think the Cardinals can actually get something real back for him which is nice yeah and then like say so this is the minimum I think they’re going to kick in so that’s why I’m just going to stick with this number Rockies kick in five next year and then the year after and then the Cardinals I think will at least kick in 15 because and derck G brought this up that teams are probably going to look at that last year Nolan nado’s contract and it was added to his contract by the Cardinals when he opted back in or didn’t opt out as like hey you’re gonna pay that um so the Cardinal probably kicking at least $15 million that means Nolan Nado gets paid 22 million next year in 2025 17 million in 2026 in $10 million in 2027 it’s not bad I I really don’t think that’s bad at all um I mean if he’s still playing solid defense by 2027 that’s a bargain yeah yeah and I think you could probably make the I mean again we’re talking about he’s been playing Bush Stadium for a while now like that’s not an easy place to hit um especially for an hitter like him P right-handed hitter um I really don’t I really don’t think it um I really I really I really see the world here where he’s a better player the next few years than he has been this past year and this past year he was not a bad player he was still a valuable player so I I I just think that’s something that people need to keep in mind I don’t think his deferred money’s an issue um you’re right and his comp his his contract is extremely complicated which I think is part of the motivation to get a deal done now is it’s much harder to figure out how to move a contract like that um at a deadline um and I think that’s been pointed out by a lot of insiders so it would be really funny to see the A’s trade for Nolan or orado to hit their minimum salary they to hit so hey I mean I think they have to get to at least like a hundred something for is that a self-imposed thing no it’s like an mlbpa thing I don’t well I will fully looked into it um but yeah and I think the problem was they have Rooker and and another guy who’s in arbitration but otherwise I think they went to the offseason with basically zero dollars committed to anyone so that’s why they signed srino yeah they gotta they gota at least add so saying at least 30 to milon more so why would you be going there though like if you’re a player I wouldn’t go there unless they blew me away yeah which I mean with srino I’m like go get your bag man I don’t know who’s giving you that money so yeah but three years to go lose in Sacramento you don’t even get to play a major league ballpark yeah may maybe they think like hey we’ll uh I’ll go there and get trade at the deadline or something jens’s give dlan Carlson one year 30 million that’d be hilarious imagine a a go for it man that also made a huge trade for Jeffrey Springer yeah I I was surprised they got Springs I I kind of really thought he was a great Target for the Cardinals for a couple years yeah I really like him so that was a they gave up a lot but thought I really like Jeffree Springs um but yeah anyways anything else you want to um chat through I mean feel like we’ve kind of Hit the gamit of cardinal news right now but yeah there’s not too much going on when do you think Nolan arado gets traded if he gets traded Before Christmas yeah so yeah so in the next 10 days um what what are your odds on it like you don’t have to commit to a number right now but if you just throwing stuff out there like that he gets traded or that he get 95% I think it’s really high for Mo to come out and say something like that it’s like that’s the kiss of death it’s like Mo doesn’t do that so yeah but I mean I think the only way he stays is if like the all these all these teams he wants to go to all find Alternatives and then it just doesn’t really make sense for the Cardinals like they’re not getting anything and Nolan’s like I guess I’d rather be here than Oakland or sorry Sacramento so I that but it kind of feels like Ang go for it be so funny I I it’d be really funny if he was traded to the angels but I don’t know he’s a Southern California guy like maybe that makes sense for him to to want to go home and kind of play out some time there no pressure to win an an apparently Mahomes got hurt that’s not good oh I just assume they took them out because they were up multiple scores but then again I guess it’s only still a two- score game right o I’m have to check that out um they’re just running the clock out though they’re gonna win the game the uh what was I gonna say with that I think I think we talked about this last time we’re on Kareem and um Andrew but like the reason why I’m not shocked about the Angels thing like other people are is it’s like okay if all these other contenders that he would rather go to end up kind of filling their seats what he could see like the angels as is like okay the Cardinals are also not going to be competing this year or maybe not even next year so it’s not like I’m staying on a that much better of a team right now even though i’ say the Cardinals are a better organization than the angels and are heading in the right direction and so maybe he’s like if all these other things don’t work out then I’m open to going home but I would prefer other things it’s possible to Value multiple things at once like some people like boil down to like oh no one said he just wants the win and so there’s why on Earth wouldn’t make any sense for him to go there and I’m like I agree but it’s like I mean if it just take yourself out of the baseball world you’re looking at a job market it’s like you probably have a wish list of all these things you like and if all five line up that would be the dream job but then assuming you don’t get all five things you want you got to weigh like on your list like do I value the money and location or do I value the um the the cost of living there like there’s all these different things he got to weigh and so he probably weighs winning number one right now but he’s also like hey what am I going home too so like that’s a scenario but yeah I’d agree with that yeah I hope uh it’d be awesome if you gets trade on the live stream so um one more plug for that Thursday uh we probably we won’t be going live Wednesday because of it so our next episode is going to
