the other day against the Florida Panthers a Florida team that was going to be hungry going to be pissed off about this Maple leafes team coming into town being the new Big Bad Maple Leafs number one in the Atlantic division rolling through teams with a ton of injuries seven guys they were down heading into the game against Florida on Wednesday lose Bobby McMahon in the process and unfortunately injuries catch up to them you lose that game 5 to one fall down in the standings a tiny bit moving to 137 and2 one spot ahead of the Tampa Bay Lightning one spot one more win two more points same number of games played between each of these teams the tronto M Leafs just have 137 and two the Tempa Bay Lightning 12 8 and two very very tight in the Atlantic division as of right now but also the big boys are going to remain the big boys they still remain at the top of this Atlantic division teeing up tonight’s matchup we do finally get Austin Matthews the return of Austin Matthews and I know there’s going to be a lot of people kind of wondering what should we expect what is he going to be like here tonight I don’t actually know but honestly the way I’m kind of anticipating this one and his return is that he’s going to be 100% look it seemed like he was going to play on Wednesday against Florida and ultimately never gets the tap to do so or he decides not to or the doctors decide not to but no matter what he’s not being held out just for fun they’re obviously holding them out because they’re saying hey we can get one more day two more days of rest out of this guy two more days of treatment out of this guy before we fo put him back fulltime into this lineup why not do that your team’s Trucking along you want seven of nine without him in your lineup you’re not really like in this position where you’re desperate for points or wins right now so keep him out let him miss one more game what’s it matter if it means he’s going to return to full health so I expect him to be back at 100% here tonight I don’t think that there’s going to be some drop off of his level of play or his ability because of some physical hindrance that he’s experiencing I don’t see that being the case here tonight I think if he’s playing he’s 100% so that’s kind of my personal expectation of Austin Matthews return to the lineup uh Matthew n is going to be back here tonight as well two games upper body injury yeah yeah yeah he smoked his head on the ace after taking a massive hit against the Vegas golden knights he misses two games likely a concussion there probably experiencing some symptoms or at least just the doctor saying hey there’s no need for you to hop in and play because hey the team is playing well uh with guys out so let’s not rush you back and uh B I mean hey we get you on the IR we can get some other B in here try some other guys out get some contract sorted out it it just kind of win-win extra rest for nce now he’s back into this lineup for him here tonight my expectations of the way he’s going to play I I I don’t think there’s anything that could ever get in this kid’s way of playing his type of game I don’t think injuries concussions nothing would tell him to stop playing the physical go go go brand of hockey that Matthew ni plays so I don’t see any changes coming for him here tonight but ch changes for Matthews and NY style of play maybe not changes to this lineup yes that is what we are getting here so let’s head on over to daily face off and take a look at the lineups that we have for tonight starting with the first line This is where the biggest changes come and not for Matthews and NIS who have played together before but for William nander and no disrespect to the other guys I’m going to mention here but pontis Holberg and Nick Robertson are not Austin Matthews and Matthew n they are just not that good they are are not those style of players and they are not capable of creating or being as big of a threat to the other team as Nick Robertson and pontis Holberg this is a drastic drastic upgrade for William neander in terms of linemates here tonight and it’s an upgrade to this Maple Leafs roster because you now push down guys they just go down one peg one slot on the depth chart of the rostar of who’s going out there and playing how many minutes this is a huge upgrade for this team here tonight getting these two guys back pushing into the first line role I’m interested to see how this kind of sort of plays out for William neander though because we have seen over time he is a great player when he’s the focal point of a line here as well I just pray that tonight in this game with neander and Matthews and Willie has been absolutely rocking here lately that he’s not going to now kind of overthink or double clutch on some opportunities and try to feed Matthews when he doesn’t need to because that that ultimately will put us behind the apall and kind of actually be a dagger to this roster here tonight that will be a mess uh I don’t foresee that being the case but there is that worry in the back of my head that that could happen here tonight line two pontis homberg John Taris Mitch Marner look I’m going to continue to uh beat the dead horse or whatever saying you want to use here but I have long thought that Mitch Marner and John Taris are a far better pairing than William neander and John Taris all of a sudden Johnny T back with Mitch and it’s like whoa where did these legs come from why is he playing like this how is he so hot right now where’s this Resurgence Mitch is playing really well it’s like hm maybe these guys who have had some of the best years of their career playing together are actually really good here together and should go together also on top of that Matthews and Marner were not really uh buzzing there to start the season when they were playing together maybe it was Matthew’s injury maybe it’s just other teams figure them out they become too predictable regardless you switch switch these lines split those guys up Marner and tver have been unbelievable I wish Bobby McMahon could go in that spot because a top six with him in there or pater ready in there if he was healthy at this point would be just chef’s kiss at this point to see how they’re going to match up against teams like Florida and Tampa obviously these tougher competitions but pontis homberg slotting in that spot I think it’s obviously a downgrade from Bobby McMahon but I’m not really worried because I think that the level of play from Taris and from Marner can at least Elevate him into a role where he doesn’t have to be asked to do as much whether you like it or not he does have to do a little bit more when it’s him Nick Robertson and William naner naner obviously carries that line but when he looks across to find another guy and it’s it’s Holberg and Robertson and they’re a step behind yeah it’s going to hurt that line to a degree and maybe not the best pairing for Willie but if you put Holberg in an isolated position where his two line mates are Taris and Marner I think it helps him out a little bit as well third line here Nick Robertson Fraser Minon Steven lorence this is interesting obviously we swap uh lorence into that third line they’re not going to put kenin back in there and give us the full kid line anymore I don’t really mind that Loren has been playing really well he’s a Workhorse he just does the right things the little things he’s defensively responsible he can kill penalties block shots like the guy just kind of does everything you need he also I don’t want to say a different element uh than grankin does because they’re both aggressive on the four check they both get in after guys below the goal line but I think that lorence maybe takes a little bit more of a methodical approach to the four check right now because of his veteran experience he’s been around he’s been in some tough moments he’s been in Stanley Cup finals like he’s been pressure tested to this point the guy knows what he’s doing when it comes to applying pressure on the for check and making sure you don’t take yourself out of the play not that I think greenin has done a poor job of that or hurt this team in any kind of way but you know you put him up there with the kids and then he can kind of make it a little bit more of a balanced Level Playing Field Loren up grankin down greenin can kind of go in there with Alex naner and Connor der and be a bit more of a loose cannon which I think is fair because he is just go go go go go he’s exciting there is uh you know this energy about him where he’s willing to go anybody he’s hitting anybody blocking stuff he can create a little bit of offense here unfortunately hasn’t been able to get on the board yet he did for like 30 seconds in the Florida game before they took the assist back away from him but maybe it just helps balance some things out where now you’re going to go with derer and nean or a couple guys who have played some NHL games derer is a responsible forward there as well greenin maybe it balances things out where he can just go smash guys around and El lener and derer provide some of the stuff that he doesn’t or balance some things out defensively there so those are your lines for tonight uh as for our defense here really no uh changes that we’ve seen and I I mean I’m it’s not even worthwhile bringing up here it’s just Riley emman Larson McCabe TANF Beno Timmons very happy with the defense early on very happy with the way that they play very happy with the pairings no further comments as for the power play units Matthews and nce Slot into the first unit which obviously means that our guys like NE ER grankin Minon pushed out of the first unit as of right now we are also not seeing Fraser Minon on the second unit I just want to point that out so five forward unit right now on the first unit Matthews nean or Marner taras n and then we are going to get Riley emman LaRon Robertson nean or gankin as our second units here tonight I think that this is interesting I don’t know how exactly how long it’s going to last but to start the game could be exciting with five forwards out there in this first first group the only note please dear God do not force feed Austin Matthews the power play was fine before without him now that he’s back let’s not Jam every single thing to 34 just because we know he can shoot there is no point and that will just completely eviscerate the flow of the offense for the power play I just don’t want to see that under any circumstances here tonight those are your lineups for tonight uh Anthony Stoler looked like he was going to go he’s taking the net here tonight against the Tampa Bay Lightning Andre vasileski believed to go oh looks like we actually uh have a change as per Daily face off right now the last thing I saw was stolar but I’ve just refreshed and it looks like Joseph wall is confirmed uh starting here tonight against Tamp Bay Lightning uh vasileski on the opposite end looks like he’ll be the guy who gets the nod to go head-to-head with uh Joseph wall and this Maple Leafs team which we know who vasileski is he’s a guy who can be an elite goenda you can score goals on him you can find ways to get in the back of the net hopefully the sleeps team is able to do so here tonight and hopefully they’re able to do it a
