center who was a midseason All America according to the AP in sporting news with 34 starts a big blow to the Buckeyes would it be a deficit on this day though with Carson Hinman in the game as the starter at Center he’s a former starter at that position of course the Buckey reshuffled up front but still capable of handling Indiana obviously will Howard missed a pass as he often does even though he is one of the best completion percentage guys in the nation he starts a little bit slow and missed a pass he missed a wide open trayon Henderson which would have been a first down uh threw it to the tight end in the middle of the field or is Mecca abuka uh on a third and five play so three and out for the Buckeyes there and again trayon Henderson wide open for the converted first down but the Buckeyes had to punt all right one story line from a negative aspect in this game for the Buckeyes Davidson igbnen from the time he stepped on campus and I’m sure from the time he was a starting cornerback at Old Miss handsy grabs way too physical physical cornerbacks physical cornerbacks who don’t know how to display that physical nature that’s Davidson igbnen 17 penalties at the quarterback position since the start of 2023 he had two onone series that led to an Indiana touchdown the Buckeyes number one in the nation in red zone defense however this is a trend since Jim nolles took over his defensive coordinator at Ohio State the Buckey start off slow even check out the Purdue game in which they pitched a shut out they gave up Drive on the first two possessions Northwestern last week could have given up two touchdown drives on the first two possessions Al be at Jack Sawyer uh caused a fumble on one of those two drives in the Buckey Trail 7 to nothing against Northwestern this week 7 to nothing Indiana 11pl 70 yards on the Tyson Lawton touchdown on the direct snap and again the Buckey taken to task on the first drive of the game by the Indiana offense and it looked like the Indiana offense that we have seen all season against mid to lower teams in the Big 10 screen P to tra on Henderson on a late first quarter drive all the way down to the 10 yard perfectly executed except Carson Hinman was calling for a block in the back he basically pushed air in the back questionable call bad call I’ll say questionable call he did make some level of contact and it just didn’t look good uh because Henderson was probably going to Juke the guy anyway that got the Buckeyes down to the 10 yd line but called all the way back in Ohio state had to punt or did they third and 40 third and 40 this is one of the few teams in college football that’s got a legitimate shot on Third and 40 and they converted with a 30-yard play to Carell Tate another pass play to convert to get the ball down near the goal line however Indiana’s red zone defense defense proved to be better than the Buckeyes in the first quarter Kurt cetti on the fox broadcast said at the end of the first quarter during the interview hey we got him right here we’ve got him on third down we’re going to get a stop let’s hold him to a field goal that’s a win for us it’ll be 7 to3 his defense did better than that they shut down quinon Judkins on a fourth and goal at the one 15 play 73 yards comes to not for the Buckeyes CJ West one of the best defensive players inside in the Big 10 Lenell Carr also male Kamar a guy that we talked about all week who is leading the Big 10 in tfls and sacks coming up big for the hooers they have some legitimate players on defense there’s no question about that they came in with a top 15 uh Total Defense and top five in Min metrics despite a week schedule not facing too many good offenses I would say Washington the best coming into this game Indiana still decent on defense will Howard more than decent throwing the football 22 of 26 he hit on his first 14 for 116 yards including a mecoa for a touchdown 77 ball game the ball was slightly deflected but auka the guy’s a pro he’s just a pro uh concentration Elite routes Elite just his professionalism on the field is evident one of the big reasons he was named a captain the Buckey tied it at seven also keep in mind that we were given a bit of a preview here as Caleb DS uh inserted as a punt returner set up this touchdown drive to be a short touchdown drive with a 12 yard return Cody Simon had a remarkable day on this day he was all over the place two and a half sacks including a strip sack of Curtis roor recovered by Ty Hamilton at the Indiana 18 however the Buckeyes gave it right back Jaylen Walker on the Indiana side with an interception off a deflection galani Thurman should have caught the ball not a bad pass by Will Howard he was flushed out of the pocket he moved up in the pocket thought about running it saw Thurman open hit him right in the hands a bit high but big 66 tight end would have hit him right in the forehead and so Indiana got it back however the Buckey defense then got into the flow they at this point after giving it the first touchdown Drive they were in the flow and really shut down the Indiana offense for the rest of the game the hooers only mounted 151 yards of total offense and they got half of that on the first touchdown drive and they got just about the other half of that on the final touchdown that meant nothing so the Buckeyes really handed it to the Indiana offense much like what we saw out of Michigan in the second half against Indiana the difference is Ohio State’s got an offense and Michigan does not all right so after the second Indiana interception uh they still had the ball deep in their own end the Buckeye shut him down three and out and then this really is something Indiana did not need on this day their punter James Evans just completely whiffed on a catch and muff the punt snap and set up the Buckeyes at the Indiana 7 trayon Henderson took it in for the touchdown eight carries for 68 yards for trayon Buckeyes LED it 14 to7 at the break second half Davidson osen at one point was taken out for two or three series replaced by Germaine Matthews Germaine Matthews is like a starter anyway maybe he’s a better player than IG bnos I couldn’t tell you that I think it’s a pretty uh comparable uh much different players but a comparison in regards to who brings you more uh to to the field although really the Buckeyes need to play all three cornerbacks lean Ranson with a forced fumble Cody Simon should have had the pickup that’s basically the only thing Cody Simon did wrong on this day the Indiana Center saved them from more uh from the floodgates really opening early at this point but Caleb DS he opened the floodgates himself or maybe the Buckeye return unit uh blocked well and Caleb Downs made a couple guys miss got the first spin move for the Miss really set up his blocks well and cut to the inside of the field went all the way across field and went 79 yards and for all that Ohio State football delivers they don’t deliver punt return touchdowns very often it has been 10 years since Ohio state has had a punt return touchdown that was also against Indiana when the hooers had a decent team and the Buckeyes were in a dog fight against Indiana remember that trailing early fourth quarter and that Ohio State team I don’t remember what happened to them that season did things work out anyway it was 20 to 2014 uh you’ll have to look up it up in the record books how that Ohio State team fared but this one went up 21 to7 in route to this 38- 15 win but 217 on the Caleb Downs punt return touchdown he is a weapon of course in the return game used there by Alabama most of his freshman season all right the Buckeyes take it 75 yards for a touchdown chelani Thurman with the score to make it 287 earlier in the drive a mecha buuk on a fourth and one the Buckey at Midfield you could have kind of questioned whether they should have gone for it they’re up 21 to7 they’re at Midfield it’s fourth and one but they run a mechuka and again he’s a pro he knows exactly what to do he’s on the same page as will Howard and he beats the defender to the left sideline wide open pitch and catch convert the fourth and one Buckey again win at 3815 and it’s Michigan week as Ryan Day said after the game triple zeros on the clock means it’s suddenly Michigan week it’s not okay we’re going to take 24 hours to enjoy this win Ohio State just defeated a top five team in the country whether they were legitimately a top five team I don’t believe so but their ranking and their record and their performances against marginal football teams actually meant that they earned a top five ranking but that is going to plummet as of Tuesday night 3815 now it’s 10- one Indiana taking on one- 10 Perdue in the old oak and bucket rivalry game we’ll see what Indiana has to do there they can beat Purdue 100 to nothing and that’s not necessarily going to sway many votes uh this situation is extremely intriguing it’s the SEC 10-2 teams against the 11-1 Indiana hooers did they compete in this game they did for about a quarter and a half and then the Buckeyes it wasn’t like the Buckeyes just steamrolled them from the get-go obviously Indiana Le seven to nothing it was a 14-7 lead at half uh so they didn’t get annihilated but they didn’t compete with Ohio State in this one and yes their schedule is going to get torn to shreds this week uh one more note on Ohio State football that bodess well for the future that has not always shown up in these big matchups Curtis roor had no chance in this game Jack Sawyer JT tuy Mula and the Ohio State front Cody Simon in particular as I mentioned five sacks but constant pressure on Curtis roor and the Buckey showed up in this one again final of 3815 and so the Buckeyes not only win they cover and your thoughts about Ohio State football down below and Indiana they are not dead uh they might be dead in regards to any thoughts about them competing in the college football
